Awesome review. I have not finished finished the game yet but loving it so far. By the amount of trophies I have left story wise, I am not to far from the end. As someone who love of JRPGs started with Suikoden, it’s a game I’m going to keep replaying. I hope they do make a sequel. It’s so sad Yoshitaka Murayama didn’t get to see the game finished but happy he got to see fans crash Kickstarter, so he knew how much we wanted the game.
I pre-ordered this but haven't been able to dive in yet. Cannot wait to get in this with both feet, everyone I know who is playing it right now is LOVING it.
Also I have watched many review videos. And your the first to sound like they REALLY played the game as both someone who payed attention and understood the source. So thank you for respecting it so.
I just found your channel and I love your content man, you're a super relaxing video game reviewer to listen to which is a nice change plus I can hear how much passion you have for these games. It's perfect for someone like me who's trying to get into JRPG's who usually only played shooters and western RPG's. You're underrated as fuck I think your channel will grow very fast in the next year
RIP yoshitaka Murayama. I wonder if we will be having more games that will tell us about this new world of eiyuden. Knowing that Suikoden series has died in the hands of Konami.
Rabbit & Bear have announced that they're working on the sequel, and it sounds like Murayama had written out a lot of material for future projects in the series before his passing - so I hope the team he pulled together can do his vision justice.
I have been waiting for Hellfire to review this! The love of the Suikoden series made me skip all other reviews until now. And it falls in line with my own opinion that this is a must play. Side note, if playing on pc the devs need to add rebinding of keyboard because its just awkward. And also if youre having issues with the game freezing and having to alt-tab, or double tapping the Windows button, turn off auto HDR and select performance instead. Seemed to fix that issue.
Nice review dude, clear & thorough. While not perfect, Eiyuden Chronicles: HH is not some half-assed game meant to predicate on everyone's nostalgia, like some modern remasters or remakes are sadly. It's a well-made RPG with great production values, a solid story, a truckload of content, the works. I'm looking forward to that DLC and its sequels, which can only improve on what's there.
Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed my first playthrough and after finishing it, I just had to play suikoden 2 again.😊 One thing I hope they implement in the next installment is finding items in random boxes, barrels and bookcases in towns, because there is no such thing in eiyuden at the moment.
I agree with pretty much everything but one thing. I personally prefer random encounters. Good review! As a backer myself, I have to say the game is far from perfect, but it offered me so much of what I hoped for. I have rarely felt this good playing a game and I got the logo as tattoo already.
It will be interesting to see if the success of this game wets Konami's appetite for a new Suikoden game by recruiting the team behind Eiyuden (except Murayama sadly).
Great review man! I know the Switch version hasn't received the greatest feedback, but I'm hoping by the time the physical copy comes out for Switch, then most of the issues would have been resolved by then!
i hooked up in the card game that i almost forgot im playing a jrpg and not a card game, already beaten the top players available using starter packs, now ongoing of beating everyone, the prizes are so good to farm, and im enjoying more the mechanics and playstyle which is my interest in card game returned, compare to modern yugioh that is now stressful
I feel exactly like you. So glad for your review. And THANKYOU for not harping on about localization. - It's a slap in the face to Murayama that fans would boycott the game and not experience it because the localization is not 100% word for word translation. - the essence is there and I prefer a game adjusted for my language. The Puns, jokes and play on words throughout is really well done. I would argue R&B nailed it with their localization team. It's great, some room for improvement. But more than a solid pass. And VA is great! I threw my wallet at this kickatarter too and im so ridiculously pleased with the result!
Yeah, couldn't agree more. And I also loved some of the puns they added. Such a shame that people will miss out after listening to some localization complaints.
I think ill get this before the discount period ends. Unfortunately i can only play this on switch. Any reccomendations for a jrpg with good story, music and not too difficult? The last Ive played was Xenoblades 3.
Yeah, there's some accessories to both increase or lower it. There was also an issue with low encounters rates on the PC version, which has since been patched.
I was really hoping to get the Switch version. Any word if they are going to patch the game for performance issues. I just really want the game on portable to be able to take it on the go.
I was looking forward to your review! I’m extremely excited about this game and the first thing I’m going to do is turn off the voice acting just like I did on Octopath traveler. I love just reading the text and kind of making up the voices in my head like we used to do when we were kids for the older JRPG’s. I would love for you to make a beginner tips video for this game.
@@HellFireRPGs I hear people saying things about the localization. How was your experience with it? Did it bring the game down at all for you or did it seem fine?
I had zero issue with it. Most of it is in line with the Japenese text. Some of it is better, but a few lines are a bit questionable. Overall, it had 0 impact on my enjoyment.
Respectful disagreement. The only way in which we needed Eiyuden is to bring awareness to the fact that we haven't had a REAL Suikoden game in a long time, and we need to find talented writers and designers to fix that problem, lest we end up with inferior substitutes.
I just started playing this again after 26 yrs. I downloaded the N64 collection on my son's Nintendo Switch and I'm HOOKED. So nostalgic... It is indeed an amazing game. My kud loves it too!!! He says N64 games are much better than the new ones 😂
Thank you for this review! It's fair and positive. This game is so precious and unites all Suikoden fans. It's a tribute to Suikoden, classic old school JRPGs and Murayama Yoshitaka. I will play and enjoy this game to the fullest like Suikoden back in my best days of gaming. Shame some people will never know anything about it but the localization controversy. Hopefully a fan translation will help more people enjoy this game eventually. Best wishes and gratitude to the developers
Yeah. It's such a shame that some people will just listen to the crowd and miss out on such a gem. Happy to see the vast majority of people love it, though!
I started playing this a few days ago. I think the new duel system is vastly inferior to the Suikoden games. I prefer the war battles over Suikoden I and II but not as much as III, IV, or V. I despise whoever decided to remove the castle naming option. I like the cooking minigame except for the button mashing part, If they wanted to make the cooking minigame moore then picking dishes was that really the best idea they could come up with?
Damn, I didn't know the creator died. That's tragic. Him and the chick that made the original soundtrack are geniuses. RIP. This game looks like the Suikoden from my dreams in 1996. I hope it will be as good to play.
Great review, I am really enjoying Eiyuden. Polite disagreement: character banter while exploring sucks because it's an assault on the ears especially with multiple conversations happening simultaneously and with characters I didn't want to talk/listen to in the first place.... and it pollutes the beautiful music. I wish RPGs had more configuration options, NPC banter volume/mute, or battle voices etc...looking at you Rebirth and Tales of Arise.
Game had a chance to be something special, too bad the tean forgot story is kind of important to an RPG. Instead, we just get Baby's First Rebellion Against an Empire, without any of the intrigue, mystery, or characters that made the Suikoden games great.
If you ask me, the only real black mark on this otherwise amazing game would be the localization hack job from activist jagoffs, and even then that can be fixed with mods and patches.
Stay positive this game hellfire big fan suikoden voice acting amazing and fixes some things on game magic more support offense is weak right now for magic
Game is very flawed & certainly not up to the old Suikoden standards. It's very clear that this should have failed in the kickstarter stage and never came to be. Where to begin...graphical bugs galore...slow loading times & menu transitions (even on current gen hardware)....unbalanced characters, enemies & battle system....very hit or miss VO & writing (won't even mention the localization)....lack of a lot of QoL. I'd rather wait 50+ years for Konami to make another than to have wasted any more time on this amateur game. Played it for a few days & then got a refund.
Disagree. While there are some aspects that need a bit more polishing up, overall it's a very fun game. I'm about 60 hours in and enjoying myself immensely, and yes, I'm one of those people who hit a game freeze bug (and reported it) so I should be one of the people feeling upset about the state of it, but I'm not. Why? Because it's a fucking great game and so much fun. I've loved every character, the localization is amazingly done, the voice acting is suuuuuuper!, the balancing is a bit challenging in some areas but I've not been stuck long on any one battle (one boss I had to try 3 times before I passed, but that's not much tbh) and the battle system is great. Characters have their own strengths and weaknesses, just like every other Suikoden game in existence (I don't understand people whining about this shit since it's a staple that there's always a few useless characters in the series, but you can still use a team of squirrels if you fucking want... for ~aesthetic~ if nothing else) and the story is really well done. About the only thing I will complain about is some of the minigames - the egg racing should have some sort of player input (using skills, for example), and the fishing is the most simplistic version of itself (even Rising did better, bring that back). Yes, there are some bugs but they're working on fixing them which is great to see. Should it have been let simmer a little longer? Maybe, but even with the minor issues I love it and highly recommend it to anyone. You're not being honest, you're being a prick.
No they haven't. The localization is fantastic. Try playing the game instead of knee-jerk reacting to something you read on a random site. ALL the backlash against the localization is completely unfounded. Honestly, the English localization is quite a bit more interesting than the original Japanese text. It just is. It's more descriptive, and infinitely more characterful.
