I havent played redux yet, but i do own and have played the original strange journey and that game kicked my ass so many times. The final boss i think took me like 10-15 tries before i managed to win. I managed to buy and download redux before the 3ds store shut down so i will eventually get to it. great video as always!
Great review, I know you'll enjoy Digital devil saga1 and 2. The art, dark theme is very smt3 yet the character growth is top tier. Especially the music and black upper lip on the characters lol
Fantastic review of SMT: Strange Journey. I never played any of the SMT games outside of Persona spin off series, but enjoy learning about games from the main SMT.
It's great seeing you cover this one, first person dungeon crawlers aren't for everyone so I 100% get you not vibing with the gameplay but man do I love the aesthetic and music second only to the original soul hackers (also a first person dungeon crawler lol) but it's vibes are imo immaculate
I like the flavor of demon co-op. Negotiations have always made demons feel like an unruly batch of weirdos, and losing out on teamwork bonuses because they don't like each other is very in-character, but in practice, yeah it's just straight-up less fun than Press Turn. As a kid, I just had a GBA and DS, and I was pretty dismissive of first-person games for a while, partially to convince myself console games aren't all *that* great, partially because I do like seeing the protag running around. But Etrian Odyssey won me over hard and I barely have an issue with it now. Sadly, first-person dungeon crawlers are pretty common to SMT - I think they made 9 not counting ports/remakes, so uh look forward to that I guess? Most are considerably shorter than Strange Journey at least.

I rarely used 3D on any game I played anyways tbh. And you can jump in at mostly any SMT. I'd recommend playing SMT 4, then 4A, not the other way around.
Yes, SMTIV: Apocalypse is like a WEIRD “side-quel” where you play as a different cast of characters operating OUTSIDE of SMTIV’s main characters’ story and then the two eventually overlap. It also doesn’t help that the START of SMTIV: Apocalypse is basically at the top of the final act for the “neutral ending route” for SMTIV. So TL; DR - play SMTIV FIRST. It’ll give you A LOT of context to learn from.
I dropped strange journey after the 3rd dungeon. Props to you for finishing this game youre stronger the most 😭. Hope you play the smt devil survivor series!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Strange Journey is my favorite SMT, thought it is tough as balls and many parts are so outright frustrating, they don't encourage a second or third playthough, but the story and the setting are just SOOOOOOOO well done, you can't help yourself from wanting to experience it. I mean, unlike other SMTs where humanity is pretty much done for and your quest is all about giving them a new future, a new order, here humanity is still alive and relatively well, and if you falter and your quest fails is all of their lives that are at stake. Props to "The Fear of God", the main battle theme, it is actually one of my faves and it describes Strange Journey to a tee: it starts out with this ominous chanting, reminding yoy that you are trapped in this pocket dimension full of demons who are just itching to r*pe your ass, but then it grows and explodes into this glorious fanfare, like the MC and the rest of the crew tearing through the ranks of demons, kicking ass and taking names, but then it becomes ominous again, a grim reminder that you're never actually safe as long as the Schwarzwelt exists. Nice review as usual, Pelvic gal!
I love me some Strange Journey ^_^ Definitely not for everyone, which is unfortunate because the good parts are just SOOOO good! I really enjoyed the psychological aspect of the horror in the game, from the oppressive atmosphere in certain areas to how some demons spread fear and panic with the humans, especially as some unknown threat. I feel like Strange Journey went all in with the horror, and I'm HERE for it XD I can't play most horror games because I scare too easily in the moment, but Strange Journey lets me take it at my own pace :D Jiminez and Bugaboo stole my heart XD I forget what ending I ended up getting. I guess I'll just have to replay it again :)
And no power of friendship, cringe dialogues, teens drama, annoying mascot character and fanservice BS (bathroom and beach cutscenes). Sadly those kind of jrpg's are doomed to ,,underperforming sales'', because weebs don't buy more adult jrpgs with less anime tropes, and this is main audience for jrpg's.

It's old school megaten. I bought sj for the ds after nocturne back in the early 2000's, but i had to let it sit for a lot of years. It wasn't just strange journey, i really found dds 1 and persona 4 disappointing as someone who was very familiar with NA persona from the 90s and newly with SMT via Nocturne. I ended up playing smt 1 during the interval, and FINISHING smt 2 (you need to try 2 if you havent), i had a better context for strange journey after all of that, and then i loved it. You'll come back to it and finish it maybe. Redux is a solid megaten title. I think Strange Journey was aimed more at an esoteric western audience if you can believe that, and that's why it's an acquired taste.
If you explore the first level of the Womb of Grief, you can find an item that unlocks an app that lets you tap teleporters on the touch screen to see their destination.

The trucks they use in the game were inspired by an old movie called Damnation Alley. It was supposed to be a hugely successful film, if it didn't have to compete against a new indie movie called Star Wars.
Am I crazy? Zelenin was my fav. I felt her characterization in the OG was the most natural and understandable. But in Redux, she was… different. lol I absolutely love Strange Journey, and it’s the only RPG I actually grinded to level 99 to beat. Its atmosphere was everything. I feel like first-person POV works well for RPGs like this and the PS1 version of Persona, which are kind of horror-adjacent. Really helps add a sense of dread to the games. I fused Shiva. Don’t know if I would’ve beaten the game without him, tbh. Haha
I'm also not a first person dungeon fan. Idk it feels way to claustrophobic and limiting which i guess adds to the uneasy feeling the game is going for. Loved the review even though its a game I'll probably never play.
Yeah, SJ is defo SMT hard mode not Nocturne like alot of people say, i think you should give Devil Survivor SMT series a go next, youll probably blitz through it being a smt vet now but DS1 has one of the best stories besides the SMT Digital Devil saga duology. Law, Chaos and the 3 or so neutral endings in Devil survivor are some of the best and most fair interpritations of smt themes and most of all the game really gives you good characters rather than human ideologies to side with so i think it will get you.
I personally think this is the most "engaging" of the direct SMT series (since this was intended to be a main SMT game originally) just because I think the exploration and ability unlocking feels well paced. I will DEFINITELY agree that the game is hard as shit. The Redux Humanity ending is so good but VERY hard to get through, I ended up getting one cheesed demon onto my team using a code just because I was tired of grinding so much in the WoG. It's definitely worth a play, if you can get a copy of it easily.
Oh I did not find it engaging at all. Again, not my cup of tea, first person dungeon crawlers are NOT my thing. B U T the unlocking of abilities did feel nice and a good use of expanding areas. Oh the Redux Humanity Ending was amazing, but yeah I was no willing to go through that pain. Haha

What made me give up on strange journey is this one main quest where you have to collect things from previous sectors. You’re not given clues where those items are, so you just have to comb through those areas. It’s not hard because you’re stronger now and you have most of the places mapped out, but the tediousness of it just made me youtube the rest of the game.
I...absolutely wouldn't recommend this one. A solid starting point is SMT 3 (where I started) or if you want to start at the best, SMT 4. SMT 5 is also acceptable. They're not related, save for SMT 4, and SMT4A, and SMT 5/SMT V Vengeance. SMT 5 Vengeance is like an additional route to SMT 5. But beware, SMT 5 V sure they added things (story/character) wise but also took stuff away. Gameplay is ultimately improved in SMT 5 Vengeance. though.
SMT 1 is very easy. Just spam Zio and bullets with Ailments = win. SMT 2 is also easy, but bit more balanced than SMT 1 (no Zio spam). On other hand fan remake SMT 1 VX is VERY HARD, and Akira Route in SMT If is also kinda hard.
yeah, if you don't like 1st person dungeon crawlers (blobbers) there's no way you'd enjoy strange journey 😅 a shame, cause it's easily one of my favorite megaten games. try digital devil saga next. I think you'll like it, especially if you liked Nocturne.
I like 1st person dungeon crawling but I do NOT like it in this game. So many times I've gone completeley past a corridor because I didn't notice the wall wasn't there. Notably, I spent two hours in sector E just in the twleport puzzle not because of the puzzle itself but because I was missing the alcove in the very end of it. The wall design is way polluted
Funny, all the SMT games you’ve played have been on the “easier” end of the spectrum (mostly everything post-Nocturne and Strange Journey have done away with some of the more FRUSTRATING aspects like having entire dungeons that take multiple hours to comb through with zero save points except at the beginning and towards the end of the dungeon whilst having random encounters with enemies that can cast “instant death spells” on your main character to send you to an immediate “Game Over” screen if you’re not adequately equipped or prepared). Not trying to talk crap, but I could SEE how playing Strange Journey Redux probably THREW YOU FOR A LOOP (and if I remember correctly, the OG DS release which I played and beat back in 2011 was EVEN MORE BRUTAL because you couldn’t SAVE ANYWHERE, only at designated points).
Oh yeah, I rememeber reading about the differences of Redux and vanilla, I would not make it without being able to save anywhere. And yeah when Redux added a subapp that didn't make game overs happen when the MC dies omg... bless. Best app. lmfao
Donald Trump lmao, he joined the strike teams to eat cats. 5:40 AND technology was there, the game was LITERALLY made on Etrian Odyssey engine they just turned the tools off for reasons? Btw dodged a bullet finishing the game outside Neutral. Neutral Final Boss would be harder than the game superboss with a bit more of stats, and still can give you a midway gameovers as it will spam both losing condition on some phases with mass petrify and mass insta-skills moves so cheap the superboss will not do. After playing nearly all SMT this one IMO has the hardest main quest with DDSs1 and 2 being the kings of post-game (Hitoshura and the absurd Satan oof).
For first person dungeon crawlers, Etrain Odyssey is just league's above any other with atmosphere and making the dungeons actually interesting. As each layer has its own gimmicks and giant monsters running around that you are scared of haha. On another note the SMT series difficulty is a lot like dark souls where they call it weighted combat. Which really means it's not that monsters are particularly hard compared to any other rpg, rather they limit you the player by making you suck. In SMT you have deal with all the crappy systems to make the perfect combination of demons ect to get through something. SMT systems are never complex, they just downright suck and are annoying to deal with 9 out of 10 times lol. Like you said it was even worse in the non-redux version imagine that.
Most of the people who tried and didn't like this game for whatever reason likely played it on a 2DS model (homebrewers). The reason why I think this is because there weren't that many Labyrinth styled games on the 3DS to choose from, so to experience this style of game on the 3DS and not play it in 3D... kinda defeats the purpose. These days if you don't play a game on the intended hardware (or in the best way possible) you cant fully appreciate what the game has to offer. A more worst example would be paying full price for a newly released PS5 game in 2025 and not play it on a PS5 Pro... Would you really be getting the most enjoyment out of the game? Whether it was a single player story game or an online competitive game? Just here to stir the pot 🙃
@@PelvicGaming Not a big deal, everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but that game IS definitely held in high regards by collectors when debates for the best labyrinth game on the 3DS are discussed, regardless if it gets brought to the Nintendo Switch like Etrian Odyssey. We will definitely see new games in the future be made in: 720p, 1080p, 4k, etc. but I think those 3D games will be forever exclusive to the 3DS's IPS screen, and can never truly be correctly displayed with a capture card.

I'm also not a first person dungeon fan. Idk it feels way to claustrophobic and limiting which i guess adds to the uneasy feeling the game is going for. Loved the review even though its a game I'll probably never play.
Yeah, SJ is defo SMT hard mode not Nocturne like alot of people say, i think you should give Devil Survivor SMT series a go next, youll probably blitz through it being a smt vet now but DS1 has one of the best stories besides the SMT Digital Devil saga duology. Law, Chaos and the 3 or so neutral endings in Devil survivor are some of the best and most fair interpritations of smt themes and most of all the game really gives you good characters rather than human ideologies to side with so i think it will get you.

strange journey is so fkn good
I personally think this is the most "engaging" of the direct SMT series (since this was intended to be a main SMT game originally) just because I think the exploration and ability unlocking feels well paced. I will DEFINITELY agree that the game is hard as shit. The Redux Humanity ending is so good but VERY hard to get through, I ended up getting one cheesed demon onto my team using a code just because I was tired of grinding so much in the WoG. It's definitely worth a play, if you can get a copy of it easily.
Oh I did not find it engaging at all. Again, not my cup of tea, first person dungeon crawlers are NOT my thing. B U T the unlocking of abilities did feel nice and a good use of expanding areas. Oh the Redux Humanity Ending was amazing, but yeah I was no willing to go through that pain. Haha
@@PelvicGaming I totally get that. I personally like the Etrian-style dungeon crawling but that's for sure a niche opinion haha. I just wish I was better at them.

@speaksincircles You do still have to grind to get your own character level up and to collect enough demons to fuse.
What made me give up on strange journey is this one main quest where you have to collect things from previous sectors. You’re not given clues where those items are, so you just have to comb through those areas. It’s not hard because you’re stronger now and you have most of the places mapped out, but the tediousness of it just made me youtube the rest of the game.
I like the part where they all looked at the camera and said "maaan, that journey really was strange, huh? REDUX!"

I...absolutely wouldn't recommend this one. A solid starting point is SMT 3 (where I started) or if you want to start at the best, SMT 4. SMT 5 is also acceptable. They're not related, save for SMT 4, and SMT4A, and SMT 5/SMT V Vengeance. SMT 5 Vengeance is like an additional route to SMT 5. But beware, SMT 5 V sure they added things (story/character) wise but also took stuff away. Gameplay is ultimately improved in SMT 5 Vengeance. though.

Smt II is probably the easiest game in Mainline.
SMT 1 is very easy. Just spam Zio and bullets with Ailments = win. SMT 2 is also easy, but bit more balanced than SMT 1 (no Zio spam). On other hand fan remake SMT 1 VX is VERY HARD, and Akira Route in SMT If is also kinda hard.

I like 1st person dungeon crawling but I do NOT like it in this game. So many times I've gone completeley past a corridor because I didn't notice the wall wasn't there. Notably, I spent two hours in sector E just in the twleport puzzle not because of the puzzle itself but because I was missing the alcove in the very end of it. The wall design is way polluted
Funny, all the SMT games you’ve played have been on the “easier” end of the spectrum (mostly everything post-Nocturne and Strange Journey have done away with some of the more FRUSTRATING aspects like having entire dungeons that take multiple hours to comb through with zero save points except at the beginning and towards the end of the dungeon whilst having random encounters with enemies that can cast “instant death spells” on your main character to send you to an immediate “Game Over” screen if you’re not adequately equipped or prepared).
Not trying to talk crap, but I could SEE how playing Strange Journey Redux probably THREW YOU FOR A LOOP (and if I remember correctly, the OG DS release which I played and beat back in 2011 was EVEN MORE BRUTAL because you couldn’t SAVE ANYWHERE, only at designated points).
Oh yeah, I rememeber reading about the differences of Redux and vanilla, I would not make it without being able to save anywhere. And yeah when Redux added a subapp that didn't make game overs happen when the MC dies omg... bless. Best app. lmfao

Neutral Final Boss would be harder than the game superboss with a bit more of stats, and still can give you a midway gameovers as it will spam both losing condition on some phases with mass petrify and mass insta-skills moves so cheap the superboss will not do.
After playing nearly all SMT this one IMO has the hardest main quest with DDSs1 and 2 being the kings of post-game (Hitoshura and the absurd Satan oof).

For first person dungeon crawlers, Etrain Odyssey is just league's above any other with atmosphere and making the dungeons actually interesting. As each layer has its own gimmicks and giant monsters running around that you are scared of haha. On another note the SMT series difficulty is a lot like dark souls where they call it weighted combat. Which really means it's not that monsters are particularly hard compared to any other rpg, rather they limit you the player by making you suck. In SMT you have deal with all the crappy systems to make the perfect combination of demons ect to get through something. SMT systems are never complex, they just downright suck and are annoying to deal with 9 out of 10 times lol. Like you said it was even worse in the non-redux version imagine that.

I fell asleep multiple times going through these boring ass dungeons. This game is the definition of "dark horse" in a franchise.
Beat it on hard on first play though. Wish more games were this challenging.

Most of the people who tried and didn't like this game for whatever reason likely played it on a 2DS model (homebrewers). The reason why I think this is because there weren't that many Labyrinth styled games on the 3DS to choose from, so to experience this style of game on the 3DS and not play it in 3D... kinda defeats the purpose. These days if you don't play a game on the intended hardware (or in the best way possible) you cant fully appreciate what the game has to offer. A more worst example would be paying full price for a newly released PS5 game in 2025 and not play it on a PS5 Pro... Would you really be getting the most enjoyment out of the game? Whether it was a single player story game or an online competitive game?

@@PelvicGaming Not a big deal, everyone is entitled to their own opinion... but that game IS definitely held in high regards by collectors when debates for the best labyrinth game on the 3DS are discussed, regardless if it gets brought to the Nintendo Switch like Etrian Odyssey. We will definitely see new games in the future be made in: 720p, 1080p, 4k, etc. but I think those 3D games will be forever exclusive to the 3DS's IPS screen, and can never truly be correctly displayed with a capture card.
