The Escape 4WD Conversion Begins - Removing the Engine and Transmission - Almost A Disaster

- In this video I start work on the Escape's conversion to four-wheel drive with removing the engine and transmission. Some things go wrong, and a few repairs will be needed.
I haven’t watched your video yet, but I already recommend you purchase a 2001-2003 escape with a column shifter that already has 4wd. Not only is it essentially the same truck that takes all the same parts, but it has far more features than the second generation, and a far more reliable transmission :) 0:06
Bro do it all the way this is great someone has to do it!
You could have just swapped out the 2x bell housing to a 4x bell housing including the front 4x drive differential, you can buy them used on eBay, and replace the passenger side half shaft as it's different than the 2x. I believe the pcm should be replaced with one programed for 4x application as this controls the 4x transmission shift parameters in 4x mode.
The transmission is the same internally, but you're rihht that only the case half needs to be replaced. I had a 4x4 transmission so I swapped the whole thing.
Very cool
Im doing this project but Im stuck on something in the back. Awd model. Any ideas? Got the tranny bolts out so i believe
Did you have to change any electronic components to make it all work? I am putting a 2WD in a 4WD car and wondering if this will work? I know I need a longer CV shaft. But what else?
All the electrical stuff from 2wd worked with the 4wd parts. I added a toggle switch to engage the 4wd since I don't have a 4wd control module, but that was the only electronic mod I had to make.
@Nunya Bis I transmission swapped it with the 4wd transmission. I did pull the engine and transmission out together for the swap though.
Can you show a video on how you put the switch in for the 4x4
How did you get the motor out? I have a blown engine and I’m trying to get the motor out only but it feels like it’s stuck
Any luck on this? I’m in the same boat and there’s star bolts going into the tcase from a bracket on the engine
These are easiest by dropping the subframe and removing the engine/transmission assembly from the bottom
These are supposed to be dropped from the bottom by removing the subframe, and is much easier to
If I had a lift that would be easier.
So what did you do to turn on and off the rear differential.
Was this on the 3.0 V6 or 4 cyl? I have a 2011 3.0 V6 I am going to be making into a offroader/overlander and am scouring the interwebs for lift kits, wheels, tires, and a 4wd system.
This is the 3.0L V6. Mine is the CD4E 4 speed transmission which was only used in Escape through 2008. You would have the 6F35, so a conversion may be a bit different.
@@PaintedSpringsGarage Thank you so much! Did you by chance happen to measure the diameter of your ring gear? I want to put a arb air locker in mine but don't know the ring gear size.
09 escape::I have a 6f35 trans question? i was hoping sense you converted to 4wd you could tell me if a 6f35 2wd and a 6f35 4wd are the same trans? and hooking to a transfer case is what makes it 4wd? I have a 4wd according to the sticker and my vin decoding but i have no 4wd button and i always thought they called this awd. but now they call it smart 4wd. anyways i need a trans and cant get clarification about buying a 4wd vs 2wd 6f35. my shifter doesn't have 1 and 2 it has L is that makes any difference. anything helps, thanks
The 4wd is computer controlled without direct input from the driver. Look underneath the rear for a rear differential. If it has a rear differential then you have computer controlled 4wd.
@@PaintedSpringsGarage ok, I have a diff, so that's that. Do you happen to know when ordering a 6f35 if their all the same or if 1 is specifically 4wd?
@@johnsmith-dm2tq I do not know, but would be surprised if they are not different.
You wouldn't happen to know if a 2.5l from a hybrid is a donor for a broke down 2.5l non hybrid, do you?
That engine is very different and wouldn't be a direct swap.
@@PaintedSpringsGarage good to know, thanks.
What year escape is this? I have a 2010 I'm thinking of swapping
Mine is a 2008 which the CD4E transmission. 2010 has the 6F35 transmission, but a 4wd conversion may be similar. I started the process by looking at 2wd and 4wd cars at the junkyard and comparing parts.
@@PaintedSpringsGarage was there a reason you took the exhaust manifold off? Are they different for the 4x4?
@@PaintedSpringsGarage also do you know if the 4 cylinder AWD trans is the same?
@@stolenrider07 I do not know if the 4cyl transmission is the same.
This is insane! Why not just sell what you got and buy a 4WD??
Ha ha! What fun would that be? I know what I have and used parts are super cheap for the 4x4 conversion. Stay tuned because it should be done in a few weeks.
Dude I picked up a 3.0 wrong wheel drive and was wondering if an AWD swap was possible lol just the shit I was looking for my man 😂 noice 🤜🤛🤝
Edit: 500 bucks is why I wouldn't want to do that lol I got this thing for a steal
