Sad to see that happen to this rig. I have a 2002 with 205k miles, and still running strong. I replaced the radiator at about 170k because the plastic for the upper hose had rotted away. I had noticed the leak, so the engine never overheated. These are great little rigs, and it's sad to see one die.

SOME PEOPLE CAN'T TAKE A JOKE.
I had my ex-girlfriends mom get angry at me when she saw me "administrating" the last rights to her vehicle. She told me religion is not a joke and should be taken serious. I told her that if she took her auto maintenance as serious.as she took her religious beliefs, I wouldn't have had to administer the last rights to her vehicle.

That Escape looked like it was in pretty good shape body wise. Interior from what I could see didn't look too bad either. That's too bad it blew a head gasket and I'm with you on that, I wouldn't pull the head on it either, if its blown bad enough its blowing smoke through the radiator and the coolant reservoir I bet its got far more wrong than just a head gasket, and a replacement engine would be the direction I'd go too.
I'm having a re-manufactured engine put in my 1988 Ford Bronco 2. Far more expensive than what its worth but I love driving it too much and its not like you can just go buy a new one :(. I had the transmission rebuilt a couple years ago so with a new engine/transmission it should be good for another 30 years....probably longer because I take far better care of my vehicles than the guy I bought the Bronco 2 from did.

But there is no preventative measure that will save you from "the kids". I had a similar experience with a slant 6 Dodge. Ran beautifully for me. My kid used it one time and it ended up towed home with a huge hole in the side of the engine. Never seen anything like that! Of course he was "just driving it" and it started to "shake".

When you decided to not take it on to flip it, I realized that must be an ongoing temptation for independent guys. I think that would be a weak spot for me. I'd probably take on a bunch of lost causes that would never really return on the time investment, or they would sit as I failed to get to them in a timely manner. Maybe now that I'm older not so much, but when I was younger I could see myself really making poor choices in that way. Cool video all the same!

    • @SouthMainAuto

Once I considered exactly how much cash he'd have to invest toward the new engine (even excluding cost of labor involved) it became painfully clear it's a losing proposition. Eric called the right shots and made the right decision declining to needlessly prolong the vehicle's pain and suffering. There comes a time when you have to shoot and bury your horse as painful as that decision always is.

For a couple hundred dollars I would have bought that little Ford, torn the top end down and as long as the block wasn't warped I would have had the heads resurfaced and replaced the gaskets and enjoyed it til i got bored with it.

Won't do that again, plus about 1-1/2 years prior I had the transmission rebuilt and that was $2400. I now have a new 30 year old truck HAHA!!! But with my maintenance schedule it'll last another 30 years at least....the previous owner didn't do anything to help it, improperly towed it behind his RV, didn't do any regular maintenance to it apparently the engine was so neglected it was burning more oil than it was burning gas, and it was excessively sludged up too. Its ok I enjoy driving it so that's the only reason I spent that kind of money on it.

We had the Taurus do this (not as bad) but the head gaskets blew and it was smoking out the tail pipe pretty bad. We had run it not knowing this until I did an extensive amount of work on it, and found water in the oil. We parked it with the intention of replacing the motor along with a few other parts but decided to buy a different car and scrap the Ford. It was a real nice car and only had 145K but I think it had a problem (head gaskets) that was covered up before.
The wife is happy with her newer and lower mileage'd Elantra though. So we won in the end. Timing Belt replacement is next for that car though.

My Escape was still running great at 255 then the plastic connector to the lower heater return hose broke fifty miles from home. Jimmy fixed it, added a gallon of water every 5 miles. After 5 refills the car rolled to a stop and died. Towed home, fixed line, tried to restart, it cranked until battery died multiple times. Checked plugs, had spark but thought it might be fuel cut off switch but wasn't, Replaced with fuel pump with one bought 3 years earlier thinking it was ready to go out. After watching you give the final rights I finally gave up. I really miss my Escape which was nimble and quick compared to my Toyota Highlander which drives like a bus.

Just bought one of these. Exact model and color. It had a small misfire at idle initially and was leaking some oil around the valve cover. Went full home-gamer on it and did the timing cover gasket and timing chain (while I was in there). It had just an obscene amount of crusty sludge in it. Buttoned it back up to find the miss at idle had gotten worse over the couple of weeks it sat apart. The thing drove but just really had a hate for the idling. Long story short, she's getting an engine. Previous owner toasted it just the to the brink of death and sold it with a small miss at idle. I'm playing the very expensive fool, but it would have been more fun if mine had blown smoke rings out of the coolant reservoir...

This isn't the video, but the one where the springs on the plug wires were missing on the rebuild helped me diagnose what I thought was driveshaft issues ended up being misfiring under acceleration. Lotsa rain amplified the problem. Thanks. Learn a lot from ur videos. Can tell my local guy what the issue is. Bad plugs wires or whatever at 232K

I am surprised the owner gave up on it.
I find it unlikely you could find a used car in as good a shape as that was for the price of a doner engine.

The puffs through the res. put me in mind of a steam locomotive chugging along. I'd say the kiddies were beating on daddy's car, maybe? Easy enough diag. I loved the ending, send it home, back to the earth whence it came or china, which ever pays the most. Thanks for the video.

Blown head gasket and bad radiator. There is no way they didn't notice the temp light but they just kept on driving until it blew. It got hot because of the big hole in the radiator which eventually blew the head gasket. They will salvage that car instead of crushing it.

Rebuilt tranny just got toasted with the massive overheat. Even if it feels ok right now I am positive that it won't feel very good in a couple of 1000 miles. That kinda Temps would burn up the tranny in no time

Damn. It's pretty hard to blow the head gaskets on these Duratec motors. If only people had the slight common sense to watch their temperature gauge and react to it when it's deep into the red. I wonder how many miles this kid drove with no coolant in it, lmao. I'm amazed it will even start after that. I also don't blame you for not wanting to pull the heads. Who knows what horror show you'd find after getting into it. It's also a big pain to do head gaskets on a DOHC motor anyway.

You know, there should be some sort of alarm that goes off when the motor gets hot. I have to admit, I don't always keep my eyes on the gauges. Most kids don't know the alternator from a Sunbeam Mixmaster.

HAHAHA! 23:4 with the booster case was fantastic!! :D :D :D
Man, that thing was fried to a cinder! I've been around engines a long, long time, and have never seen one that bad EVER. One time I overheated my '86 Grand Marquis after a coolant flush without removing the t-stat. Thing got so hot the oil turned to milk from the coolant that shot past the head gasket! I was watching the upper hose start to blister, when my cat-like reflexes pulled the Lever-Vent cap and avoided catastrophe. Changed the oil, and the following week I towed a U-Haul trailer 2,400 miles to Phoenix, AZ without a hiccup ... aside from a blown heater hose. A 7/16" deep socket fixed that one. :D
21st century manufacturing for ya. I'm afraid they're trying to put us out of business by making all vehicles throw-aways ... :o

Don Heston yep I have a 2001 escape and had a temp issue a month or so ago - noticed AC was not blowing cold and looked at temp and it was really high. Immediately pulled over.
Radiator line broke causing all coolant to spew out... had it towed home and changed radiator myself, refilled coolant, all is fine!

    • @MichaelSaull

It's kind of a classic saying which originates from the idea of an on call plumber pulling a clog out of a toilet in front of a house wife and saying "well there's your problem".
It was also frequently used by adam savage on mythbusters.
