    Penalties for Spreading Fake News
    Nowadays, the media became a very integral part of our society and where information is now available to everybody, we can easily see it by turning on our television, listening to radio or opening a certain article on web pages and through our social media accounts. However, we can never know whether what we are reading is true. With the rise of fake news that includes misleading sources, clickbait and satirical contents we can say that some news are not reliable and the rest are just fake trying to deceive and manipulate the public. It is important for us to care about it and get rid of fake news because we deserve to know the truth and real can benefits us.
    President Duterte’s special power bill contains a provision to solve COVID-19 crisis in which specifically punishes those who creates and spreads fake news with a 2 month jail sentence and would face a fine of 1 million pesos. He said that law against fake news is unconstitutional as it can curtail freedom of speech. However, the Malacanang said the revised penal code can endanger the public with imprisonment for 6 months with a fine of 200,000 pesos. The Philippine National Police also said that the cybercrime prevention act could also be used to prosecute those who spread fake news. Former supreme court spokesperson Ted Te said that there is no law that criminalizes or defines fake news as a crime, and the special powers law also does not define what fake news is, it cannot be criminalized and would be void. He claimed that it is a step on the constitutional right to free speech.
