I am a near lifelong Doom fan but I've always secretly loved Heretic more. Brutal Heretic RPG combined with the episode merge is one of my favorite action game experiences.
I definitely feel Heretic deserves more love from the modding community, I can't remember if it was brutal Heretic but there was a mod I played for it some time ago where you could level up, learn new abilities for your weapons and some other quality of life stuff. Made the whole experience super fresh and interesting.
Is BG3 actually a BG game? I didn't play it, but I saw this sexy bear trailer and thought that it is too radical change from the dead gods, murders and tortures I remember the series for, so I didn't bother with BG3.
I gave BG3 a go, and to be honest for me it was alright, but it plays more like a Divinity game than a BG game. Which I suppose makes sense, givin it was developed by Larian. It's by no means a bad game, but you are right it just doesn't feel like I'm playing Baldur's Gate. I know it had to update a bit from the originals, but it just feels too distanced both mechanically and narratively.
@@aquawalrus did you by chance finish it? There is definitely plenty of fan service for fans of the original, almost to a fault in the final act (bringing in a host of old villains from BG1 through Throne of Bhaal, and de-canonizing the possible redemption arcs of two major characters, also re-writing Gorion's backstory for some reason?) Playing as the Dark Urge origin character is the best for as-sequel play. Also the plot is largely a retread of BG1 -- war-mongering wannabe tyrant makes play position himself as hero of Baldur's Gate and Arch Duke of the city. It's really a great game, even if there are many other spiritual successors that do a better job of replicating the feel of the originals
@@jeffreytripoli I only ended up playing into act 2, it just didn't hook me like I was hoping it would. I will definitely finish it at some point, and see why it's gotten so much praise but it just felt like something was missing for me. I didn't feel that investment like with the older games. I have to say my favorite "successor" to the BG franchise for me was Pillars of Eternity, I absolutely loved that game and it's sequel. It really scratches that itch for CRPG gaming.
@@morra82 I would love to do strife, im a huge DOOM fan and love anything in the engine. Can't promise exactly when it would be but yeah for sure it's on my list.
@@aquawalrus wasn't a request, just wondering. The doom engine is GOAT, it is the start of modern games (I'll stop myself or I'll keep gushing like the fanboy i am). I honestly enjoy even the new stuff that came out like hedon (thicc lady orc fighter may or may not be part of the reason of my enjoyment)
@@morra82 Hedon was great, I never finished Bloodrite but loved the first chapter. It's probably one of the craziest examples of what that engine can do, but even the more tame stuff in the modding community is wild. I have a whole USB devoted to maps and total conversions. Some of the shit people have created over the last 30 years on the engine is just so spectacular. I don't remember the exact name of it but there was a mod for heretic that I played that was essentially brutal heretic plus a whole leveling system, one of my favorite FPS experiences in recent history.
@@morra82 I just looked it up. Heretical Doom is the name of the mod if you're curious. It works with both Heretic itself, or even with DOOM maps. Overhauls the gameplay and even adds new attacks to weapons as you level up. UA-camr IcarusLIVES has a good video on it! Now I want to go play it again haha.

And yes BG1 and 2 are the best. BG3 was still an amazing, worthy experience even if it really was a wildly different kind of game.

I don't remember subscribing to you, but this is exactly what I wanted.
Hah, well either way happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
Loving you videos man
Hey thanks, I appreciate that!
Heretic is definitely one of the best doom clones out there, it needs all the love it can get.
Going on with binging you vids, you planning on reviewing strife in the future? I can't put that game in a box
