I hope you will listen to my sad tale, friend. As a teen I had RPG Maker for the PS1 and made a full game called Twilight Descends where you hunt a vampire. I spent a TON of hours on it. Then I picked up Hexen for PS1 and a game save took an entire memory card. Well, I deleted the game I made so I could play Hexen… and discovered it was a fun fantasy FPS ruined by excessive “where the f do I go, what the f do I do?” syndrome. To this day I’ve never finished Hexen.
I had RPG maker as well, I never managed to put anything coherent together on it but it was fun to mess around with. It's always such a bummer to look back at stuff like that and wish you'd held onto it. I built a lot of custom StarCraft and Warcraft maps I wish I still had them! I sold so many of my old retro games and consoles when I was a teen and so wish I would have kept hold of them... I had Hexen as well, I actually try to play it every now and again but I've never made it much further than the 2nd world. It's a cool environment but I can never figure where to go and refuse to look up a walkthrough for an FPS!
That's appropriately dark fantasy but comes very near to being grimdark my friend :( sorry to hear about your game. Especially with Hexen's moonlogic "puzzles" serving as a mocking reminder
I just finished Hexen after playing it a bunch as a kid on the N64. It kicked ass! Got it cause I beat Heretic recently. Hexen's definitely a filter game though lol, it doesn't hold your hand when it comes to navigation and puzzles haha
@@williamroeben I have very similar memories. I remember playing it, and I remember playing DOOM a whole lot more. Still, was really exiting to find it again, I was starting to think it didn't exist!
Firstly, I don't trust anyone named "Kirt". Secondly, this reminds me so much of a more action-y Ultima Underworld- the intro cinematic especially but also basically everything else about it. Now it's time for me to download and play this bad boy.
Love the video my man. Another great one. I never knew about this game or heard of it. Couple points, "Kirt" enough said. Also the wolf dude reminds me of the altered beast transformation
I forgot to mention, I think this is the first time you used the meow sounds when the editors come on and they have a fancy box thing they are in so they are way more noticable. If you started this in an earlier video forgive me it's the first time I really noticed it, very nice touch. Sometimes the editors would get lost in the mix and id have to rewind to see what they had to say. Also, you are doing such a great job and you are very appreciated just wanted to say that as well!
@@not_jon_vendi it is the first time I've done that sound effect! I've actually been thinking pausing my voice as well when they pop up could be a good idea, so it doesn't get too busy trying to read and listen all at once. My swarm of cat editors demand attention 😺
Wasn't aware of this game, I definitely have to try it. I was just recently replaying Heretic/Hexen games, and then also played through Hands of Necromancy (and it's sequel). It's a GZDoom game in which you play as a necromancer, who also happens to be a shapeshifter. And it was the shapeshifting I've found to be the best feature of the game (partially because it seemed very original to me, not being familiar with ShadowCaster).
I had never heard of Hands of Necromancy, it looks pretty damn good though. I'm a huge fan of anything resembling DOOM or Heretic, it's on my wishlist now I'm gonna have to give it a playthrough. Shadowcaster is not without its faults, but its a pretty fun game for what it is. Expect a slower pace then something in the DOOM engine, but its a good time regardless, and also the only game I know of where you play as a muscular 4 armed bipedal cat man.
It's always a highlight for me when there's a new Aqua Walrus video! Thanks for what you're doing! Btw have you ever played "Gothic"? If not and if it isn't too "modern" for you (released in 2001🙃) maybe you wanna check it out. It's no dungeon-crawler but an interesting old rpg.
Thanks for the support! Gothic is for sure on my radar, it's a series I've wanted to play for years but just keep missing it. It'll definitely be a video at some point.
@@aquawalrus You're very welcome! Nice, I was hoping for that! Just stop playing after Gothic 2, because Gothic 3 is an absolute trainwreck of a game...

I miss the norm of status bar faces. It was such a big thing in 90's games and pretty well doesn't exist these days. I wonder if anyone has made a mod for the new DOOM games to add it.
@@aquawalrus really glad you mentioned this as I just watched a video about the previously unused/scrapped sprite and texture work. I played this and I played Doom (at least the shareware part of it) when they came out. I preferred the slower paced gameplay of Shadowcaster. Still, I also played Bard's Tale 3 and one technique there was to leave the game overnight so mana regen refilled everything. But that's because I was too stingy with consumables.
@@richardfarrer5616 honestly, if the energy Regen was fixed in this game it would be one of the top dungeon crawler/fps games of the early 90s. It's a shame the mechanic holds it back, it was such an ambitious title.

Shady as hell.
It's almost as bad as "Dirk" in terms of late 80s-early 90s fantasy names
