As a fan of Doom since the very first shareware days, this is genuinely a treat. I feel like I learned a Hell of a lot about the man who helped make one of my favorite games of all time. However, having said that - YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS AGAIN, JOHN. There's more that you haven't seen. A lot more.
I still have my two 1.44" floppies! They were handing these out at a Comdex convention or something similar at the Infomart in Dallas back in what ?? 1993-94 I took home a copy loaded it up and played for weeks. we then learned that you could use a serial cable between two systems and play multiplayer and then we got fancy and learned that you could network them together using COAX over 10base2 using the Novell driver to start the IPX. My and my room mate at the time spent months (probably a year) playing this game and I have played every one since. This one game probably changed my life more than most anything else in my life because after I got addicted to this, I still play almost every FPS to this day. I can not even comprehend the thousands and thousands of hours I have in these games. Thanks JR.
@@noises4978 I mean for someone who wants to learn, the correct way to play isn't to just play it, it's to gut it open and watch how the insides shift after the classic playstyle.
I love it how John keeps going through all the obvious stuff that changes without noticing, like the impossible hallway and it's appearing and disappearing doors BUT he does notice the super subtle things like how playstation turns into an xbox.
What I love most about this wad is that it couldn't have been made in anything other than Doom. One of the best things about it is the aged technology; there's this amazing atmosphere here that could only be captured with tech from that era. The nostalgia, the sound, the liminal spaces, the 90s! There's something about certain media from the 90s that's inherently creepy, more so than any other era for me. The VHS vibes, this; and there's a certain quality to some of the film from the early 90s that gives me a sickening, anxious familiarity that I can't quite put my finger on. And thanks to the internet, I know I'm not the only one.
you obviously dont know about "dai katana" then lol. if i remember correctly johns ego got to him and he left doom to make dai katana on his own and it failed hardcore.
@@Parasiteve This is like an alien heard the story once and tried to repeat it. Doom was already over. Quake was turning into another doom style game, John didn't want to repeat doom. It speaks a ton that even getting one of the lesser endings in MYHOUSE still is such a trip to experience. I'm really happy he caught the playstation to xbox change since that's one of the first major points where the map starts to show it's hand on how quickly things will change around you if you're not noticing.
@@shemsuhor8763 Ancient Aliens with Project Brutality mod or even see him blaze with Russian Overkill. The ultimate power trip. You do have to be familiar with the weapons to really own though.
It's wild to see him embrace source port features that were completely absent from the original. One would assume that if anyone in the world would be a classic DOOM purist, it'd be John Romero, but he seems more interested in what the map designers had in mind.
I’ve just watched the almost 2 hour video from power pak about this mod. I couldn’t look away for just one second. What an incredible depth this mod has, also in combination with the pictures the journal and everything. This is amazing.
This is such a thrill to just watch, cant imagine what a thrill it is to see for those who made the wad and to Romero to witness that out of something he originally created came something like this decades later.
You know, it's funny. The one person I watched play this who knew nothing about Doom found most of the secrets easily. Everyone familiar with the game seems to miss things because their expectations about the game leads to them not trying things they assume won't work.
What I find interesting about this is that people play it so many different ways. I have seen people very familiar with Doom also find all the stuff. But there mainly the types that makes maps. And so they get a tingling little feeling about what to explore. Like they know the limitation and such but will go exploring those limitations just for that. But many of the more experience regular players tend just to play it in a way in how they expect doom to work. In it quite interesting.
It's a very interesting thing really, it goes deeper than that. For example I've created a few non-linear Half-Life 2 levels and linear Doom 2 levels. Half-Life 2 players didn't like the non-linearity, while Doom players didn't like the linearity. It shows exactly why it's so hard to create something unique. The response is often negative, even if the ideas are about normal in isolation. There is just an incompatibility. But it's also impossible to fix it the other way around, because Doom 2 players rarely will just play a Half-Life 2 level, and vice versa.
The work put into this WAD (or piece of multi-media art) has been vindicated by the millions of views by now but to have John Romero actually play it must be a trip.
I recommend Mark Z. Danielewski's "House of Leaves" - That book appears to have inspired this map, the "Navidson Realty" sign is a reference to one of the characters. :)

@@baumhauser Spot-on assessment. The WAD toys with the concept of liminal spaces at times, and that section of the level was inspired by a famous "liminal space" photograph that was taken at Holiday Inn at Heathrow Airport. Also, the house changing frequently (including an easter egg if you open one of the closets several times) is a reference to the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. One of the text documents that accompanies the WAD also seems to indicate that as an influence by highlighting each instance of the word "house" in blue, just like in the book.

I love how the part at 49:38 is overlooked by some, but others freak the fuck out about it. This video has been a treat so far, and I'm sad it looks like the whole map isn't explored. Still really cool to see our good ol' boy, the actual Icon of Sin himself, play this crazy ass doom mod nearly 30 years on. Fun fact, but Doom 1 and 2 were my first played PC games as a kid. My dad somehow got a virus/broke the computer and we had to call a PC guy. He didn't have DOOM, but he installed Duke3d and said "it's basically the same." I hated it at the time, but I love it now. gzDoom is basically just Duke3d on crack as far as the engine goes. Long story short, I saw sprite tiddies at a far too young age, but still preferred DOOM. Still do to this day.
I love how back in the day PC guys were just random dudes and they often just installed pirated games alongside repairing your OS. Also, you still see sprite tiddies to this day, or prefer doom?
@@Dorumin Funny you say that because my Uncle set up our PC for us and installed DOOM with the OS. My dad did something to fuck up Windows and we had to call some PC repair guy because none of us were any sort of tech savvy and he basically had to just do a fresh install of windows 95. Because I loved doom so much my dad asked the guy if he could install DOOM to which he replied "no, but I have something better" and installed Duke 3D, hence where the sprite tiddies comment came from. (There was also Daggerfall.) 'Course, what with the wonderfully perverted world we live in today, there's always H-Doom if you want both Doom and 2d sprite tiddies. lol

This is so fun to watch. You can tell at the beginning it's been awhile since Romero's played Doom but as the video continues it all comes right back to him.
@@AVAtistar Yeah you're supposed to go through Underhalls to get the super shotgun. One of the things I love about My House is how you build up your arsenal. Shotgun from first house. Chaingun from second. Super shotgun from Underhalls. Plasma from Brutalist, but only if you collected the otherwise unnecessary blue card. BFG from the horror bathroom, but only if you paid attention to the screenshot on the Google drive. Rocket launcher only near the end - for the slaughter. The fact that the super shotgun is not in the map itself, but only Underhalls, I think suggests that you are supposed to go through Underhalls at least once.
One of the fun things about this map is that the experience extends outside it - there's a decent amount of supplementary material that acts as paratext for the actual playthrough. (some of it functions as a hint book) Even some of the mapping techniques fit into the broader backstory.
I love how he just casually keeps playing through Underhalls as if he hasn't played that level 10,000 times already, and you can still just hear the joy at visceral moments of blowing enemies away and picking up weapons and ammo. John's truly an artist who loves his work.

Never played Doom and found most secrets easily? Bullshit or he must've played a shitload of other games like that.
