A Fluke (Flounder) Limit - But At What Cost?

- Jig fishing produced a limit of tasty Summer Flounder (Fluke). The catch cost more than usual, but it had nothing to do with gas prices.

I've caught all of my flukes by watching your videos, and for that I am forever greatfull
It's actually comforting to see that you don't catch 75 fish on your first 25 casts every time you go out.
One of your rare videos I can show my kids without making myself look inadequate 😆
Right? I went for stripers from the shore 4 times before his first video back up here. His first cast of the season on Long Island and he got a slot fish. My wife watched it over my shoulder and said, "That was his first cast? You went 4 times before that cast." 😂
@@gdamanis at the time I watched that video I had gone out 6 or 7 times since the first of the year and was still holding the skunk.
I finally put my kayak in a local lake and caught some bluegills and yellow perch so I could remember how it feels to take a fish out of the water.
Thankfully seabass season opened in NJ, and I caught something worthwhile.
Weather permitting I'll get a couple of trips in next week and try to take advantage of what I've learned from watching JS.
@@davidbulanowski1091 I'm happy to say, I caught a 24" fluke in the south bay before Mr. Skinner caught his first keeper. 🤣
Even better, my wife and kids were on board, so I proved that I know how to catch fish and don't only skunk. 🤣🤣🤣
Nice job John! Hopefully this is the beginning of a great fluke season!
Once the tails gone. I take the gulp and split it half lengthwise, then split the last 1/3 in half to make a tail. And use it again like an Uncle Josh. On a smaller jig head. def works.
Good one.
thank you for that one great tip 👍
Difficult (and expensive) fishing. Also, some good help from technology. Very interesting video!
So awesome they just started around where i am pretty hyped to catch some more
Wow that’s a lot of gulp!! Unfortunately can’t live without it. I feel like it draws more bites then any other grub or swim bait.
Great video as always john! I am always learning from your videos. This year I’m off to a great start with the bucktail from shore.
I love watching these videos keep up the work also blues have been running in northport and Huntington harbor
You are the God of The Salt !
What a talent you have.
Thx for all the info.
Thanks John!
In Florida, we say the fishing was great... The catching was slow!!! Enjoy everything you post and have applied it here. Works great 👍
Thanks for the video
Great video John. The sweenster almost swamped you when he paid you a visit😂.
I was thinking the same thing Frank lol
I gave up Gulp years ago. Yum products are VERY effective at 1/2 the cost, also like some Gambler swin tail grubs. Lot's of alternatives and good juice out there.
got three keepers in shinnecock yesterday on 4 pieces of gulp. Your a true inspiration!
That's a banner catch these days.
Ole John with the rickset there...
Uncle Josh's pork rind strips work almost as good as Gulp. I soak the Uncle Josh strips in the Gulp juice for a few days and they are effective.
This were some pretty big blues and good flukes
4:30 "It's going to be a great //light// fluke rod. > > > Proceeds to reel in several large bluefish. Classic Skinner.
Ive fished with just the chopped gulp and it does catch fish since the fluke seem like they care for the scent more then the action.
Thanks from New Zealand. Your fluke have really big mouths. We can catch them here but with either a kernel of corn bait, or tiny little 1/2 inch lures. They certainly won't lake even a 3 inch gulp. Great video thanks
We have flounder like that in NY also...They would be called winter flounder..The ones in the video with the larger gape are fluke also called summer flounder..P.S...Bucket List to fish in New Zealand...Enjoy !
your still allowed to fish in New Zealand? for now anyways.
John I've caught several decent fluke on the gulp after the tails get chomped off. I pull them off and hook the nose so they hang off the back of the hook instead of leaving them on the shaft of the hook
Good input!
Had a few tails bitten off on bucktails however most of this years fluke have been caught with small orange gulp on teaser hook. Because of this I decided to use a small sinker with 2 teasers. Worked great and didn't lose any tails. Nice video.
If you're not catching almost half of your fish on the bucktail then there's something wrong with it, usually either the hook or the weight.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing You are right. I only had heavy (2-3 oz) bucktails for heavy current. Did a lot of dragging instead of jigging. I learn something every time I watch your video. Thanks
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I tend to get many more hits on my teaser but I stopped use as many bucktail...I go with high lows with loop for weight at the bottom...I also had terrible production with the glass minnows up on the teaser spot. For some reason my best fishing has been bare hooks with gulp (white usually best with pink in at #2 and this year orange just got me a keeper fluke and sea bass on consecutive drifts yesterday)
Theres a guy who fishes where i fish a lot who always uses gulp shrimp and catches lots of fluke. No curly tails on those. He also uses a special rig with a Hopkins spoon tied in line instead of a weight or bucktails. Idk if thats key to catching more w/o curly tails or if it doesn't matter.
I like the explanation face shot intro at the beginning Skinner, it looks like one of my videos but you're actually going to catch the target species LMAO
I usually keep a jar of half gulps handy, my buddy swears that they still work. Seems like having a tail on the bucktail increases the bite, while the teaser makes little to no difference.. fishing in fishers island sound
John, sometimes we cut the tailless gulp with scissors to look like squid and use them on the upper teaser and still catch fluke on em!
Is there a specific glue/epoxy to use for bucktails that doesn't have an odor for the fish?
John, have you tried the Fishbites grubs yet?
Up to how many ounces do you use jigs and when do you switch to just a high low teaser ??
In newengland we go from over fishing cod and bass so now everyone goes for fluke, tautog, black sea bass and scup. Right when cod numbers rise and were able to fish them again all the others will be over fished and not able to keep . Their really needs to be better management especially on charyer boats
John, we would take and turn flounder over to white side and cut a strip of flounder belly and use it on jig.
I really thought u used only one piece of gulp all day while hammering fluke. Thanks for sharing some of your trials and tribulations
John have you ever tied your high hook as a drop shot setup over a dropper loop I been using that way for years and out producing everyone on the water in the rivers especially with gulp Jerk shads it's a different kind of action especially finicky fluke I use it on a consistent basis from the manasquan river to the Greatbay including off ssndyhook in the kayaks its extremely effective.boat fishermen as well as shore fishing they get frustrated not realizing the small differences.
I've really come to appreciate jerk shads from fishing in Florida. I need to get some 6'' for fluke.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I'm eating fluke right now as I text I got 6in gulp grubs last week and a assortment of Angry Head jigs I various weights from 1/2oz to 1 1/2oz with long shank wide gap owner hooks that I haven't tryed yet with the 2 slot 17 to 17.99 and one greater than 18in at least everyone comes home with fluke. In NJ
There really is nothing like a fluke hit. My favorite fish to set the hook on.
The grub body without the tail might still work. I use the 6'' jerkshad normally which doesnt have any curly tail action anyways, ill use one until its mangled.
Florida has given me a big appreciation for jerk shads.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing it slays. alot more durable than gulp with tails!
Would be good to make a video showing how to use the Minn Kota trolling motor for fluke fishing.
have to go back through a few years of videos but when he first got the trolling motor he did a tutorial.
@@mikeknottscreek8183 ok thx
Don't throw away the half eaten gulps I catch big fluke with them I found when they're eating crabs sometimes it works better
Can you share with us your new light tackle fluke rod specifications. Besides fluke what other species could this rod be used for. Thank you
6' 2'' 10-20# braid, 1/2-2 ounces. Will be good for fluke, blackfish, and snap jigging bass and blues. It was great on weakfish yesterday.
Maybe try Ottertails?
Gulp used to be great until a couple of years ago when they changed the type of plastic. Now they don’t last long at all. I’ve been using the Dormatador by Zman and they hold up well. Still expensive though.
I've left the gulp stubs on and caught--provided they have a little bit of tail and even better when I shave the body a bit with a knife.
Recharge and send it.
Thanks for that input!
Without a doubt you catch ‘em up………..but you have to be by far the messiest guy I’ve ever seen. Boat is full of more trash, junk, ropes, and even tree leaf pods……..and you just don’t seem to care! A trash can doesn’t have as much trash in it as your boat always does. To me, it’s the best part of looking at your videos. Your boat has more junk in it than a landfill! I can only imagine what your backyard and home look like…….😳😳😳😵💫😵💫😵💫🤯🤯🤯 but, it’s fun to watch you fish. 👍😎🐟
My home and yard are beautiful. Almost everything on that boat has a purpose. You assume a lot.
Hey John can we get a Rod and reel combo video updated version 🫡
What rod are you using?
You should try Fish Bites Fight Club Dirty Boxer 5 or 6" curl tails. All the local flounder guys here are using them. They are scent impregnated, are much tougher than gulps, and they have a lot more action in the water. Here is guy comparing them to gulp. Search Bayou Bandit Charters Fishbites vs Gulp...
I have a question if you don’t mind where do you find a good fishing area on shore in RI ?
I'm the wrong person to ask since I live on Long Island.
Another fine video John, thanks for keeping us in the hunt ! Four isn't bad, here in North Carolina, it's one (1) and the season will only last 6 weeks.
Wow.
Can't wait to figure out what a NC one fish/per day limit will cost me this fall. I might decide to chase something somewhere else. I use Z man 10x elaztech products with good success . Even the pinfish can't chew them off.
I honestly love the old boat, it’s salty and has character.
It really is awesome, but I have to get that floor replaced and fix the leaks underneath it.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thats not a"fishing boat" Its a Fish CATCHING MACHINE !!!
I have loved your videos from the 1st one I saw years ago. I'm surprised I have never really paid much attention to your boat! I am making plans to purchase my first boat once my son graduates next May from UVA. After raising 3 sons, it's time! I'm surprised you get as much done in a boat this size, and with a 40 hp motor. But it suits where you fish to a T. I'm in SE Virginia and will be fishing the Chesapeake Bay, and bays and inlets that feed into it. Not looking to be a blue water fisherman out in the gulf stream, but pick my days to go a couple miles out at most. Love your vids and have caught my largest flounder ever by bouncing just like you do, only I've been walking up one side of a pier and down the other! Good technique I guess works wherever you fish! Thanks John!
Thanks for the kind words!
Have you tried keeping one of the blues and cutting it into strips and using it in place of the gulp?
Not a fan of doing that. Yes it works, and it also draws in every dogfish shark in the area.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing gotcha. Valid point
Hmmmm - maybe a Zman grub and some of that Salt Strong juice instead of the Gulp?
If you think Gulp feel brittle, don't try Fishbites. Those things are snot on a jig.
Fluke seem scarce this year. Haven’t seen many posted by party boats I follow on FB. John have you tried Sound yet? Probably another crap fluke season there.
Have not tried the Sound, but my brother did off Riverhead about a week ago and it was poor.
Nice when you have the water all to yourself… and catch fish! Take advantage of it while you can… cuz the fleet will be out there next nice day😤..
Just wondering why you haven't tried the Z-Man grubs for saltwater. They have that stretchy material that the fish can't tear. One bag lasts almost a season.
It's not even close to Gulp in productivity. You can't match Gulp by smearing an oil-based scent on plastic. I wish you could. Here's the test trip. I tried. ua-cam.com/video/vkM9Y5tva_k/v-deo.html
are you able to get cod there; or are those further north still?
Around 40 miles southeast in the ocean are some cod.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you.
At what cost! I bet you had fun being out there on the water. Catching fish is bonus and tge 20 gulp is a non factor. You had a great enjoyable time i bet. You can't put a price on that.
Not complaining. Just pointing out the unusually high gulp to fluke ratio.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yeah it is unfortunate those tails get snached off quick but its part of the game as you know. Love your videos. You have helped me be a better fisherman. Thank you sir
You can put a price on it though, gulp is damn expensive. If you were to lose this many gulp on every outing it would burn a massive hole in your pocket.
@@BaldyFade if you have a boat and are dealing with gas then the little gulp is a super small hickup. And gulp is not that expensive anyways. But then by saying that, its relative to what some consider expensive or not. I dont consider it expensive, my kayak on the other had i consider expensive for my fully rigged out PA 14 .
@@briansupermag3918 fair point, it’s all relative to the angler. It may not be expensive to you but to some it’s expensive. It’s the priciest scented soft plastic, for good reason though it’s the most effective.
I put a slit in the tail end just to give slight action and they still eat it just as if it had a tail.
Great suggestion.
Hey John, can you do us a favor and save some fluke for the rest of us?? We like eating fluke too!
out of pure laziness....and a really productive drift... I've kept chewed up gulps on with missing tails and all and kept catching.... days like that are sure economical
Great input.
Was that a speckled trout that followed you from Florida?
Weakfish. They sure look similar.
Does the color or the gulp really matter? I can never decide.
It does, but the best color varies.
i was never that good a fluke fisherman but i;m a little better at it since i've been using mr skinner's techniques. question : do i detect in this video a slight falling out between john and gulp ?
Not in the least. They need to see this too.
Nothing wrong with bluefish. Always a good fight at any size
They're junk and ruin rigs, lines. They can be entertaining but at too high a cost not to eat well
Love their fight but sometimes annoying when targeting a specific species. They just get in the way 😂
Have you searched for Flounder in SW Florida at all?
They're so small where I am and there are so many other things to fish for, so no. I've had a few accidental catches.
Well you always manage to get into fish, persistence and time on the water pays off.
Is the new rod meant to compete with your Tsunami slimwave rods or is the rod it's own animal?
I'll use it in place of the slimwave, but it's definitely different with a slower taper.
Can't believe there is commercial fishing allowed for Weakfish.
Agree on the Gulp. I’ve started switching to Zman if my first Gulp or two get bit off. Can’t afford added costs with the price of gas and gear…..of course you could probably catch ‘‘em with a rusty nail…..
What about otter tails?
They suck! I’ve used them multiple times and they work better for hungry seabass than fluke.
What state
NY
How many trips do you make that we don’t
Actually see? Lol
We allow commercial fishing for weakfish? Wow, I won’t keep weakfish bc I want the population to rebound. But if they’re just going to up the quota for commercial fisherman when I don’t keep them, I suppose I may as well…
Im wondering John, You don't like Smoked Bluefish?
I'm looking into trying to make blue fish cakes this summer, I heard they are good like that
I do. I haven't smoked fish in about 35 years though.
@@Delmarvafishing Bluefish are good anyway you cook em. I was raised on them. The have a Good Strong Fish taste.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing on the boat bleed the smallish bluefish out, then soak the cool filet in ( preppedlemon/lime juice raw onion and cilantro) for 15 mins and eat... you won't believe how delicious it is...
@@mikejordan6036 ohhh so fishy
Forget gulp, grab a pack of big bite grubs -squirt some procure inside and I catch flounder all day for $6 (2 packs)
Manns purple jelly worms on a high low rig topped with squid. Old school👍
That is very old school
Tie your own bucktails and save money
If I sell all my fishing equipment, will be able to by fish at the market till I die
Good one.
Gulp 8.99 a pack now 😕
Ouch. Some places are less.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I started using pro-curr scent
I gave up on Gulp! Z-Man Dormatador with a squeeze of Pro-Cure catches just as well and you won't loose a bait every time a sea robin looks at it.
Not from my experience. I wish it did.
Strongly disagree! If the fish are maybe super hungry then they will eat it. However if you fish in a more pressured area under not ideal conditions then Gulp will work better in my experience.
At least your rod bent. Add in boat & tackle cost. If you're going to mention cost, what's it cost to go & purchase fresh. Can't put a price on fishing or one might as well stay home, cut the grass, clean the guters, etc.... & go out for a fresh fish dinner.
These Gulp products are not only absurdly expensive, they are not biodegradable. Maybe over a period of years they will degrade, but we have found them in fishes stomachs and on beaches that look quite old. They have also gotten noticeable weaker/poorer quality over the years so they will not last as long on the hook or are bit off easier, I guess so Berkeley can sell more. Lastly Berkeley put a hard plastic tray in the packages for no reason at all, which is just more plastic in the environment. They are bad news for the environment and other than being able to catch fish, they suck.
Saw the title, havent watched yet.
Suspect re bag limits. While a strong advocate for limiting your catch and NOT catching your limit, I do take issue with the absolute carnage of the drag net boats and full comercial operations. A sport fisherman has NO chance against them, or ability to even come close
Penalizing the rod guy who struggles to catch a few and not allowing for more liberal seasons is just unfair.
Weakfishish lol
Hey John, we have been getting great feedback on our New AllPro X-Pro Grubs. Other influencers posted how they fish as well or actually better than gulp. They are scented, they glow, they have rattles in them and "the tails won't come off!!!!". The bad for us is that you won't buy a package a day as the X-Pro Grub will last many trips. Hit me up with an address and we'll send you a pack to try out. Vince AllPro
