I am 100% picking this guy up! I love the colours and the fact that PNSO collaborated with the paper authors. Also, that paper section was really interesting!
It is one of the most enjoyable papers I've read! If I didn't have to get to work I would have read it through in one sitting! This is truly a show of what PNSO in top form is, and with HLG's recent showing of the Triceratops, it looks like models of scientific art like this is going to become the standard.

A very nice representation of a very recently described species. It may not be the best ceratopsian we've had this year (or even in the last month) in my opinion, but it's definitely some great variety to what we've had so far.
What an amazing figure! I’m sure other companies will try their luck with Loki, but I’m curious to see who will surpass PNSO’s version. As a self-learner, I find these reviews incredibly helpful. I love the open-mouth stance because it allows us to see inside the mouth, which PNSO doesn’t often showcase in their ceratopsians. The color palette is refreshing, but the frill pattern is not great. Other than that, I would rate this figure a 10 out of 10. Thank you so much for this helpful review, my dear sir! Thank you my friend! I think that with the collaboration with the authors themselves makes this one going to be very very hard to beat. Unless whoever comes up with the next works directly with the authors, who will surely have a lot more useful information than even the excellent paper. I hope that PNSO will not make this the new brown though... this one looks coloured a bit similarly to the PNSO Camarasaurus.
Awesome figure and I loved the preview of the paper. It seems like the paper itself is also a work of art (or atleast great UX design). Hopefully companies continue to work with researchers when new papers come out. Great figures could be produced as a result as well as highlighting the actual science.
The paper is indeed beautifully written as well as the presentation easy to follow. Extremely accessible and as you say, excellent UX! I think that PNSO might use this as one of their continued advantages, a focus on the science and more collaborations. That would also get them more name recognizability in Western scientific circles too!
Let's hope 2025 is a much busier year for them! We need some lipped theropods, particularly a Tyrannosaurus Rex! More sauropodomorphs like Plateosaurus would be welcome too!
I sure wouldn't mind more basal sauropodomorphs! Plateosaurus seems like a no-brainer after Lufengosaurus. I hope they get its hands right though I'm sure they will based on their past record. I have no doubt that the lipped T Rex will be a winner, though it seems like a lot of other companies want to jump in on the T Rex. I suspect that people will be a lot more exacting about what they ask for as they get more and more options.
@ a Plateosaurus has been on my wishlist since I was about 5! For such an important dinosaur, figure representation is sparse! Considering Jurassic World: Rebirth & WWD ‘25 are coming next year, it’s smart business for companies to update their Tyrannosaurus models, and I think a lot of people are itching for a fully up to date representation of the King of Dinosaurs! I’m not sure if you’ve seen, but there is a CAD for a new Rex by PNSO…

An exciting release for a ceratopsian lover! I'm glad they've broadened their range of colours too. The only thing I'm dissatisfied with is the sharp-edged, artificial look of the frill "eyes". But that's certainly not enough to deter me from buying this gladly, once it reaches my local supplier.

Possibly for the larger scales we know. I would imagine the basement scales would still be too small to be seen. In a sense, EoFauna can be said to be more 'accurate' in that their dinosaurs are often smooth, since at 1:35 some of these scales measured in the milimeters can certainly not be seen. But the smaller the scales model manufacturers can make them, the closer to believability these models will be, while still giving us the detail we expect!
Very nice review as always. Thank you! My one question is about the symmetry, or should I say the lack there of. Because most animals that I can think of have relatively the same look on the right side as the left, it makes me wonder about the Lokiceratops' asymmetric features on its scull and frill. I know it was a valiant effort to construct the figure as close as possible to the only fossil that has been found. But might this animal in life of that specific fossil be an exception to the norm? Maybe Lokiceratops were just as symmetric as other ceratopsians, but this particular one was just a little malformed. 🤔🤷 Thanks again!
Thanks for your comment and question. Drawing from the discussion in the paper, I get the idea that in fact, another way of thinking might be that asymmetry could _be the norm_. Instead of being a developmental anomaly, for example, the asymmetry might serve to differentiate between individuals, indicate health status or attractiveness (whether mates might prefer symmetry or asymmetry is another guess). _Rangifer_ for example have asymmetrical horns, and that is considered a _normal_ state, not an _abnormality_ . Another possibility may be developmental plasticity, in which there were localised differences in growth rates or environmental influences during postnatal development.
A nice review overall, but when you say the length is 19 cm, is that meant to be horizontal length or centrum length? Using a flexible measuring tape I get a centrum length of between 21.5 - 22 cm which would make it closer to 1:31 scale (since the scientific paper estimates a length of 6.7 m and length estimates of fossils in science papers are generally measured along the spine). And having picked this one up recently, the box doesn't make any claim of a 1:35 scale as with some of their other models. One of the product images on amazon also states a horizontal length of 18.5 cm, given how curvy the back is it wouldn't make sense for the centrum length to be so close to the horizontal length.
I can't remember which video it was, but I explained why some animals are usually measured in horizontal length. That is also what most toy manufacturers use as a gauge. In this case, I did use the horizontal length. One thing I regretted not saying in that video is that for some animals, the horizontal and through-centra lengths are surprisingly not that different. This is especially the case of hadrosaurds, given their posture and how stiffly their tails were held. The sauropods, with very long necks and tails, since their positions can create plenty of length variation if measured purely horizontally, are usually quoted as measured through the centra. However these are just going to be estimates. For example the Styracosaurus in terms of pure horizontal length seems to be a nice 1:35 based on typical length estimate brackets, but for some reason, there is something about it that make me feel it looks smaller than 1:35.

The animal is measured from the tip of the nose to the vent (cloaca or anus), which will avoid big differences due to length. This would be useful in mammals, for example, in which tail isn't really significant. However in sauropods because their tails do make a huge impact, SVL wouldn't work so well. That's why it's more usual to take through-centra for sauropods. As for differences between scales, it's important to differentiate between scaling up or down just by body length (which I believe is what most model makers do), or a 3d volumetric increase. As you can see in the Wonder Artistic Models Humanoids review, an increase in all proportions from one scale to another represents a HUGE difference in volume!
Now a month ago Haolonggood release their Triceratops which was highly praised. Now PNSO releases a ceratopsian that from what I see is even better than the Haolonggood Triceratops. This feels like bone wars reloaded. Question is who is Cope and who is Marsh here. My feeling is that PNSO models will more likely stand the test of time because they are scientifically more accurate.
It's an interesting point you make. I believe that while scientific-accuracy alone is very important to some of us, it is not as important to those who contribute the majority of buying volume. If PNSO could get the Western scientific community interested and actually buy these figures, that could get them more sales in that niche. But against that virtue, we have to balance out what the current majority of people who buy these figures and create business sustainability for these companies want: awesome looking sculpts, beautiful colours, and most relevantly here - price. I watched a recent video in which a review bashed PNSO for the 'crap' they include in their boxes. What people forget is that outside various small similar-thinking groups, for example those of us who are really into science, there is a much bigger world that these businesses have to cater to. In this case, many Chinese parents buying PNSO products not just for an isolated model, but other wholesome experiences they can get from the purchase. If these were 'crap', they would not sell here, let alone in the West. If PNSO continues to thrive, it will certainly be partly because of the respect it has with the science-minded crowd. But it also has to appeal to other reasons thousands of other people will buy. Unfortunately, scientific accuracy is just one part of these primary drivers.

It's amazing how PNSO keeps refining the scales - maybe getting close to actual "scale" size with this offering?
Possibly for the larger scales we know. I would imagine the basement scales would still be too small to be seen.
