  • Finally! PNSO is not just back, but also giving us the long-awaited Triceratops!
    The quintessential representative ceratopsian, Triceratops is the name and face that will always be symbolic of the horned dinosaurs. Over the decades, it has held on to its popularity, albeit with many updates, and many of these updates present here in the new 2021 Doyle the Triceratops!
    A delight especially for those who follow the twists and turns of this iconic dinosaur, in terms of theory and postulated anatomy, this Triceratops combines PNSOs usual balance of sculpt detail, paint application and scientific rigour to give us something that will likely be as controversial as its improved Wilson the 2020 T Rex!
    Let the thoughts, ideas, and opinions begin!

      Thanks mate! I'm glad always to meet a fellow enthusiast who's also into the science of things. This one was very easy to get passionate about. Triceratops being one of the big three favourites from childhood years (the other two being T Rex and Brachiosaurus). Just the Charles R Knightesque pose is enough brings me back to when I was a child of nine looking through picture books.
      By the way, speaking of nine, 9 more days of Christmas right? 😁

    Love the discussion on cheeks. PNSO are the best in the world. I adore their paleo sculptures not only for the art of it but I'm only interested in the animals being anatomically correct. Which PNSO pride themselves with. I love love love your research on each animal this makes your channel the best out there. I look forward to hearing you explain the different possibilities. Keep up the good work. I'm sure one day you will have your own TV series. X

      @Ashley Artus Thank you for your kind words! I am fortunate to have viewers like you who also enjoy the science part of dinosaurs which is a passion of mine that I want to share. As to TV series, however, there are many many people who know far more than me, and they are already running full paleontology channels. While a nice idea, there are many things involved with getting a series running, some of which would take away the enjoyment I have doing these videos 😁
      PNSO indeed goes from strength to strength and if you have seen the latest PNSO Torosaurus review, you'll see they've improved on even _this_ Triceratops! If you liked this Triceratops, I think you'll love that Torosaurus. And then you'll have to struggle with which one to get lol.

      and i love that sometimes they visit some little known ideas and bring them up to the public for example the skull of their torvosaurus which is a bigger adult version of the subadult specimen, elvis (the skull of which is having similar shape with pnso torvosaurus with crests that look like carnosaur crests but the difference is that its snout is narrower but its subadult and as we know so far some theropods developed from slender to more tall snouts) something that not many people know

    Man seeing this model in hand really makes me like this! I also love the addition of a skull coming with it. Whilst I believe that the colour scheme could've been a bit more interesting, I still like what we got and I really loved the sculpt

      Definitely there is a simple elegance to not having too many colours, and if you're going for realism doubly so considering the size of this animal! Some days I am happy with it as is, some days I think of getting it repainted 😁

    Beautiful figure, outrageous price. I would like to have it, but time will tell. Already have Eofauna's, and although Eofauna is always number one to me, the pose of this one pleases me better. Maybe next year brings me a lot of money (if i'll succeed in my new project), and i can join an Horridus to my collection. Great review, as always.

      Indeed if you have the EoFauna, then you would be very happy with that. It's a specific Triceratops specimen (and potentially new species) so to me that's always extra special, just like Borealopelta is based off one very definite specimen. The money you save you could use to repaint the EoFauna if you find the original paint scheme atrocious 😀

    "Hey babe, new DinosDragons video just dropped"
    Fantastic work as always! And a stellar model too. PNSO often manages to imbue their models with a good amount of character (their Tarbosaurus and Torvosaurus, for example) and this model is no different, giving the impression of a grumpy elder that one would be wise not to anger. Given the ambiguity of whether AMNH 5116 is Triceratops or Torosaurus, I was on the fence about this model, but now I'm leaning more towards wanting it. Keep it up! I'm hoping PNSO reveals the rest of their rumored figures (especially the Acrocanthosaurus and Centrosaurus).

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much! I really find myself enjoying these models clearly based on a specific individual very much, giving them a kind of unique spirit. The PNSO Parasaurolophus, Borealopelta and Parasaurolophus struck me the same way.
      Centrosaurus is such an important ceratopsian, and yet I don't even have a single one, so to get a PNSO take on it would be amazing. I am sure they will bring to bear their usual skill and aplomb and do this dinosaur justice. Still on ceratopsians... I don't know if you're a fan of Torosaurus, but if you are I have a sneaking suspicion that we will both be very happy next year 😁
      Of course an accurate Acrocanthosaurus without exaggerated spines would be very much welcome. I don't have a single accurate one of this genus!

      @@DinosDragons Likewise! I hope they make more of these kinds of models, maybe a Gorgosaurus based off Ruth, with all its pathologies. Endless possibilities.
      Agreed, especially since it's so well known with so many well-preserved specimens. Surprising that only Creative Beast has made a decent one so far (and that one costing me an arm and a leg, if I was interested in buying it). And like you said, PNSO will hit another homerun, and it'll be yet another definitive representation under PNSO's belt.
      Curses, I forgot to mention Torosaurus 😅 Honestly that might be the one I'm most excited for. I sure hope you're right 😁 And here I thought my only option would be the car-sized (and priced) Creative Beast one with the apocryphal keratinized frill.
      Yep, despite how many there are, none of them quite hit the mark. I recently bought the Papo one, and it is probably the best one on the market. It really is a beautiful model, giving the impression of a Hellenistic sculpture, and being pretty close to the actual animal, but let down by some shrink-wrapping and fluky proportions. Its arms are about twice as long as they should be, and while the whole model is about 1/35 scale, its head alone is 1/30 scale! 😫 so close yet so far. And of course, here comes PNSO making me regret ever even considering it 🙄

    it doesn't matter if the video is 20 minutes long or 2 hours long, I'll never skip your videos. I watched this video yesterday and I was speechless. So it took me another day to collect my thoughts and comment. About this Triceratops figure, I think this is the most amazing figure I've ever seen. I don't have that many prehistoric toys/ figures. But this may be the best figure for sure. Even though the color is a bit dull (for me) and the price is so high, the sculpt work is so amazing. With this figure, I think the Torosaurus, Triceratops debate will continue for the time to come. Either way I'm in love with this amazing, detailed, perfect, and beautiful video lesson. Thank you so much for this my dear Sir. Please keep up the good work. ❤

      Thanks as always Rajitha! Although I realise some people would really just want to look at the model so it's a little unfair to make them sit through the entire video. So I hope this new format - model first, science later - makes more sense and matches to what most people would like.
      Now... Torosaurus, that's a really interesting idea, though I personally never really bought into that. I've always had a deep impression of the crazy frill of the Torosaurus, and I would love to see one from PNSO that would definitely show that at least, in this line, they are unequivocally two dinosaurs! 😁

    i mean about the long horns thing its true that it would have prevented low browsing but triceratops was a big animal, it would eat ferns and stuff so it's head would not be touching the ground when eating those and horns would still be in the air
    maybe this is the reason why young specimens have backward facing horns, because of their small size they eat plants closer to the ground so the horns need to not be in contact with itand as they grow and eat bigger plants there is no longer danger for them to touch the ground or anything and would still be perfect weapons/display structures
    whatever the case this is sure a high quality accurate depiction of triceratops that i must get, im waiting to see if aliexpress will have sales on christmas so i get it cheaper, but if not its ok i will get it with the original price
    btw i thought doyle was female? idk if im wrong though

      I like your logical thinking! It's the kind of ability to imagine that is so valuable especially today when everything seems to be delivered in overwhelming waves. 😊
      Doyle is a surname name of Irish origin. So it could probably be both. As a first name I believe it's more commonly male though I may be wrong. Something along the lines of "Dark Foreigner". Actually I wish I'd remembered to make that mention, because this is obviously a dark paint application and the name is appropriate.

    An excellent review. As always.
    I think this model is awesome, controversies aside (but certainly less controversial than the 2020/2021 Tyrannosaurus rex, 'Wilson', the reconstruction of its head being the main point of contention). I am very much in favour of the PNSO-esthetics in this model, as well as most of their other recent models. A real beauty, in my eyes, this one. Somehow it gives off a vibe of real life power, weight and massive size. More so than the old 'Doyle' Triceratops. (Maybe that is why I don't own that model.) The very sturdy legs are certainly one of the main reasons for that feeling. To me this is an esthetically very pleasing model, mostly because of the fact that it looks so very much like a real living animal. Triceratops may well be my favourite dinosaur, at least for now, when looking at this representation by PNSO ;-)
    As a sidenote, I prefer simplistic, low-key paint schemes, like in this model, because they are neutral and leave room for imagination. Also, I think it is the more scientifically correct way to do it when we (still) don't know what bright and/or contrasty color schemes the animal had - if it had them at all. (Kind of a same discussion as those about lips on Tyrannosaurus rex and other theropods.)

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      Good point JB. In addition the realism, there is a kind of simple elegance that the sculptors are forced to bring out, which garish, gaudy or even well-done paint applications can cover up. Given a choice between an excellent sculpt and a plain (though still layered) paint scheme, and excellent paint scheme on a terrible sculpt, it's the former for me.
      I agree with you on the thickness of the legs. When you look at pictures of the skeletal mounts, there is a robustness that is all but proclaimed in the limb bones, and it's one thing that I didn't like about the EoFauna (besides the paint scheme of course).
      Thank you for your thoughtful comment!

  • @KnyghtErrant
    @KnyghtErrant 2 роки тому +5

    I was looking forward to your thoughts on this figure as soon as I saw the preorders go up on Dan's Dinosaurs. I do wish the paint application was a little closer to the photographs but overall I think it's a lovely figure. I certainly like it a lot better than the old Doyle. Triceratops is my daughter's favorite, so how can I say no? :)

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      I first learnt that depth of colour like in the release photos even in one general colour comes from a lot of layers only when I was privileged to have models painted by artists like Martin Garratt and Jay Carriere. I'm sure Zhao Chuang applied the same care and skill to his model too, which makes it way more complex than the mass produced sculpts. Yet I've also been astounded by the work PNSO is still able to apply to these manufactured models. And their models than sell (at least in China and Asia) for the same price as a Safari or CollectA.
      Triceratops was in my top 3 when I was a little kid too, the other being T Rex and Brachiosaurus. And yes, you can't say no to a child who wants a Triceratops! 😀 If you get the PNSO, there is plenty of supplementary material to keep her learning and entertained for quite a while!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  4 місяці тому

      Sorry for the late reply! I would say that given the variations in the various fossils we have, there is always leeway for slightly different proportions.
      PNSO is based on AMNH5116, one of the most famous specimens. So you have one that is clearly intended to follow very closely a fossil we already have. It also has the really fine skin integument with the updated features found in skin impressions.
      EoFauna is based on the Yoshi specimen, as you can tell from the horns. you can look at my comparision video for more.
      Safari is a good model but the details are very rough by today's standards. Definitely worth getting just one the price alone. Doug Watson's sculpts are already modelled to a high level of accuracy, especially quadrupeds.
      CollectA is disappointingly huge, with details that go with that increased size. But focussing on just accuracy it's generally ok. Not spectacular. It has those speculative quills CollectA gives to all its ceratopsians, which have not been found in any of the skin impressions we have of Triceratops.

      I can't see how they would be able to do a model without seams if they create a Brachiosaurus and _especially in the __1:35__ scale I think we all want_ as it will probably be hollow PVC to make financial sense, but no less great as we have seen from the PNSO Huanghetitan.
      Though of course following their Mamenchisaurus, all very big animals maybe get the 1:45 treatment instead, and by then hopefully smaller animals will have improved seam lines!

      thats because amnh 5116 like its said in the video is very controversial and likely torosaurus that has the frill holes filled with plaster
      but even then it doesnt matter, the only thing that changes is the name not the figure after all torosaurus has pretty crazy individual variation like dinosdragons shows the pnso torosaurus review
      so i think if its torosaurus it still fits as a female with the new torosaurus since its a more brown simple color with smaller frill while their torosaurus has bigger frill with more vibrant colors and the light grey with the pinkish bedge on the belly is totally not as simple as doyle
      so even if someone gets it they dont lose anything to be honest as i said again only the name changes

    • @DinosDragons

      @@firegator6853 Indeed I believe that the figures are such that anyone can enjoy them in their own way. I do think there are different collectos. Many want a representative dinoaur with all the model autaporphies, so I try to talk about them for this group of collectors, since those that do care are those most likely to watch the science part of the videos anyway. Otherwise, really we should just take any interpretation we want, and those who aren't comfortable with anything major could save their money and wait for something more to their liking comes along. Or they could spend a bit to modify the figure, which many artists are now offering as a service.
