    "Turn to Stone" or "Showdown" can't lose either way

    I love how right at the intro you hear the synthesizer saying "Sweet - Talk-in' - Wo-man" and then Jeff Lynne sings "Where did you go?" before the song even begins! This song literally gets me high.

    More ELO:
    - Turn to stone
    - Confusion
    - Eldorado Overture + Can't get it out of my head (the 2nd is the main song but the album intro is awesome, they're best together)
    - Showdown
    - Evil woman
    - Strange magic
    ...and many more!

    "Out Of The Blue" album was released in 1977 and by 2007 had sold more than 10 million copies.Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a rainy day. In a BBC Radio interview, Lynne talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to :A New World Record. It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks

    Hi there, ELO are my favourite band from growing up in the 70s and I'm writing from their home town of Birmingham in England, in fact just a couple of miles from Jeff Lynne's original home in Shard End. A few people are suggesting Turn To Stone for your next reaction, it was the opening track on 1977's Out Of The Blue double album that also brought you Sweet Talkin' Woman and Mr Blue Sky. Turn To Stone also has a great example of one of Jeff's 'naughty bits' he likes to put into songs, so using a video which is an audio track with lyrics is recommended or you won't get the licence plate of the truck that hits you in the middle of the song! It's also my observation that the live performance ELO videos have terrible sound quality (Telephone Line on your channel being an example), so the audio only 'videos' are the best to hear all of Jeff's 'over-engineered' work in the studio.

    Love this song. For a change of pace, you should try their version of Roll over Beethoven. Wild ride.

    ‘So Fine’ isn’t a very well known ELO song that you definitely won’t have heard but I’m sure you’ll love it. It’s just that little bit different but beautifully crafted.

      @Jack Bauer Yeah', it's a real 'undiscovered gem' of a song. I particularly like the middle 8 where it goes off on its little tangent with bongo drums and orchestral 'stabs'.

    Easy to like this song.
    Per Songfacts, Mutt Lange inadvertently ripped off this track when he wrote "Do You Believe in Love" for Huey Lewis & the News .

    The whole album is very good. I didn't know some of the tracks till recently, but this is one of their most famous songs. Wild West Hero is another famous one from it.

    • @starry2006

      @Jack Bauer It was the third single in the UK and got to 6 in the charts, same as Mr Blue Sky and Sweet Talking Woman. Turn to Stone (for me the weakest of the singles, but ok still) got to 18.

    • @starry2006
      @starry2006 3 роки тому +1

      @Jack BauerDiscogs doesn't even have an American release listed that I can see.
      Obviously sales are far bigger on the Hot 100. However I do rate the British charts as having some very good music in it which most Americans aren't even aware of. Some great music never did much on the US charts just because they are from abroad and it's hard to break into that market.
      They aren't irrelevant charts, and labels such as 'UK no1' on records show that. ABBA were very keen on doing well in the UK charts for instance. And local groups would naturally be keen.
      If we cared more about American releases then the albums re-issued by The Beatles would be very different. I think it's important to check the local releases of a group as possibly indicating their original preferences and their local label and market as having an opinion on their music that is worth respecting.

    • @starry2006
      @starry2006 3 роки тому +1

      @Jack Bauer Ok now it's entering anglophobia. Americans can think whatever they want is famous or relevant, but so can I. There's no doubt things that are famous in America that I have no time for and other things I like. But to think that everybody's world revolves just around America is wrong. It's a global world now anyway with the internet, and more people are looking beyond what is marketed heaviest internationally.
      Military strength doesn't come into it, nor does the British Empire. Very few people in Britain think in terms of empire, most weren't even alive when there was one. It sounds to me more like you're viewing your own thoughts in that way, from an 'American Empire' perspective.

    One rare and often overlooked song by E.L.O. is "Hello My Old Friend", it is in the same vane as The Beatles "I Am the Walrus". "Hello My Old Friend" was never officially released while the band were still active, but it's well worth a listen. Even Jeff Lynne's unreleased material is better than many bands released stuff.

      I agree, but expectations depends on the timeline: 1971-74 = experimental, 1975-77 = classic, 1979-86 = stripped down. That's why Don't Bring Me Down (1979) sounds so different to Mr Blue Sky (1977).

    • @davemac1197

      @@doobotz Oh wow, that must have been interesting. I'm 5,800, so I picked up on Livin' Thing, recorded off the weekly radio chart show, then Mr Blue Sky convinced me I had found my Bohemian Rhapsody (my sister had already claimed Queen her favourites). So I collected the other albums going forward and the back catalogue. A lot of old stuff difficult to listen to because you can't go back, but replacing the video of your life with reaction videos works and enjoying these again as if they were new. Good morning!

    Being a Britt you have to know Slade "Cum on Feel the Noise" it was, but on that note.... Most people in the States here think it's a Quiet Riot song. You should do a double reaction to both songs. To let the rest of the world know the Greatness of Slade and, if per chance you don't know them or the song..... You're welcome for introducing them too you.
