    The mixture of orchestral music and rock/guitar was actually something the Beatles perfected. I love ELO and never realized how much similarity they have to the Beatles (vocals, orchestra, melodic quality) until someone commented on how they've often been described as a more modernized version of the Beatles. A great example can be heard by the Beatles in "Across the Universe" from 1970.

    • @JoeScottish
      @JoeScottish 2 роки тому +5

      Hmm, I dont think the Beatles did perfect the orchestra thing......... The contentious strings on Across the Universe were added by Phil Spector, and removed for Let It Be Naked. Even John Lennon loved ELO and said they were doing things even the Beatles never did, and called them the 'Sons of the Beatles'.. ELO were inspired by I'm the Walrus, but took the orchestral thing to a new level

    ELO is the brain-child of Jeff Lynne, a close friend of George Harrison, who greatly influenced him. Lynne wrote Beatles-style Pop songs and added a light (or "lite") orchestra section -- 2 cellos & a violin. So, the name of the band is a play on words; "electric" instruments and a "light orchestra". They were definitely unique in the 1970s.

    • @j.h.3777
      @j.h.3777 2 роки тому +1

      They also were known for using lasers (electric lights?) which was new at the time. Just my guess since I saw them twice and was really awed by the lasers bouncing off their instruments into the sky and hitting stars and the moon (saw them outdoors 1st time) So cool!

    • @bmoak

      Lynne produced George's big comeback album, Cloud Nine, and then they joined up in the Travelling Wilburys

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 2 роки тому +2

      Actually, it is the brain-child of Roy Wood, the man who co-founded ELO with Jeff Lynne. Roy left the band after two albums, amicably, but likely due to the fact that Jeff's songwriting was taking off and taking over. Jeff's direction was gravitating towards the mainstream, whereas Roy seemed solely driven by the appeal of avant garde experimentation. But if you're talking about the band's concept, it was the brain-child of Roy Wood. Roy is also the one who named the band. Light orchestras (as opposed to full orchestras) were all over England at the time, and he wanted to combine their cello/violin sound with electric guitar, electric bass--the traditional instruments of a rock 'n roll band. Roy was in a band called, The Move. Jeff was in another band called, The Idle Race. Both of which were enjoying success--in England, that is. Roy had been recruiting Jeff for a while to join The Move, first asking him to come aboard in 1969. Jeff declined. But they stayed in touch, and when Roy asked Jeff to join The Move a year later in '70, Jeff was still not interested. And that's when Roy hit him with it. He said it would just be for a short while, as he's got an idea for a new band, and explained the concept to Jeff. Jeff's mind lit up, thrilled by the possibilities, and he told Roy he would join The Move but only on the condition that they get to work immediately on creating this Electric Light Orchestra. The deal was made, and the rest was history.

    Hi Chod- Really Love the selections today. ELO is a great band- Jeff Lyne’s voice is still great today as it was 45 years ago. Another great band from that era with iconic harmonies is Jefferson Starship before they became Starship in the 80s. Suggest the following for your listening pleasure; Count on Me, Miracles, Runaway, or With Your Love.

    The Moody Blues were known to usually perform with an orchestra at their concerts, of which I went to many. The band didn't have a violinist, but they had a flautist, Ray Thomas and then when he passed, a woman Norda Mullen. Check out: "Nights in White Satin", "Long Highway", "Blue Guitar" and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" by the Moody Blues.

    You nailed that reaction- it is such a cheerful song- I always find myself moving and grooving midway through. It never fails to put a smile on my face. I was worried by your thumbnail that you didn’t like Sweet Talking Woman, and I couldn’t guess why you wouldn’t like it.
    For a REALLY feel- good song to help you forget COVID- give ELO All Over The World a reaction. Can’t think of what other songs would be on that playlist, but this would be the first on a list.

    The Thumbnail on this reaction scared me! I was thinking “Oh no, he didn’t like it, but it’s such a good song!” I’m happy to see I was wrong about the thumbnail. What I really like about ELO is HOW they mix genres. You get Rock, Classical, Blues, Disco and even Jazz at times. THIS is a group that was HEAVILY influenced by The Beatles. Fearless in how they execute different sounds and concepts to produce GREAT MUSIC!

      @@sharongranger5860 That's true of every era - the past was always better than "today". In 30 years, you'll look back fondly to the 2020's... ;)

    IT IS GREAT THAT YOU ARE REACTING TO ELO BUT YOU HAVE NOT REACTED TO ANY OF THE EARLY STUFF THAT WAS BETTER THAN THE COMMERCIAL STUFF SO WHY DONT YOU GO OFF THE SAFE COMMERCIAL STUFF AND LIVE LIFE DANGEROUSLY TRY SOME EARLY ELO LIKE 10538 OVATURE, I CAN'T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD, OR MAMA THAT SHOW ANOTHER SIDE OF ELO.

    Sorry bro, but I have to unsubscribe after losing all hope of seeing you react to what is happening on the music scene today. While other reactors are promoting new singers and new songs, you seem to dwell on music legends of the 20th cetury and which you can really add nothing that hasn't already been said about them. Maybe you just want to please a certain audience, but that is not my cup of tea. Sorry again!

      I'm curious. Why do you have to announce that you are unsubscribing? And there are plenty of reactors reacting to 20th century music and I think Chod adds something new. If you have listened to his reactions, many times he says he doesn't like a lot of the new music and he also knows a lot of the new music. Maybe he does want to please a certain audience, which might be himself. So what. So do the reactors that are promoting new singers, which I don't know who they are and don't care. Maybe you are one of these new singers. But what I'm more curious about is why I'm even replying. Maybe it is because my mom beat me up, or the cat is snoring to loud and I can't sleep or why do people have to announce why they are unsubscribing.
