How freaking cool is John myung... guy has zero ego and quietly goes about his business.. a kick ass musician who is at the top of his game..
Yeah he IS the quiet one lol!
I know. Great guy. Fantastic player.
He's like that in-person too. Totally plain-speaking guy. You have to listen close because he is a quiet talker. His son and my daughter go to school together. I see his wife all the time at school functions, and occasionally John. Portnoy also lives about 5 minutes away. Was in his house.

4:23 That guy is the best Dream Theater fan alive. The things he didn't say are just as important as the things he said. He's a genius!
This documentary was made for Octavarium, their 8th album.
Now, Mike Portnoy is back in the band and they’re working on album #16!
I would love to see another Documentary like this detailing Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds & Silver Linings, and then the Maningi era, and then Portnoy’s return and their latest album with him!
WTF? Portnoy wanted back in years ago and they rejected him! Why the change of mind now? Feel so sorry for Mangini.
@@redsed1565 maybe they wanted some fresh insights? Cant say their latest albums are great nor memorable
@@redsed1565I mean, they can’t just outright kick Mangini out of the band, I think him leaving, and Portnoy rejoining was a mutual feeling between everyone.
@@redsed1565James wasnt in touch with Portnoy for years and Portnoy only got back into playing music with anyone from the band in 2021 with JPs solo album and LTE3
20th anniversary- finally Myung talks!
hahahha
They're talking about how scenes from a memory was a highlight in their career
Portnoy- if that had failed commercially or critically we would have given up
Petrucci- we really needed to do a record like scenes
Rudess- we've been getting along well and making a living ever since
Labrie- this album rekindled the magic relationship we have with our fans
Myung- it's great
I love them regardless of what they say but myung is funny
He talked in the progressive bass concepts instructional video.
Kinda cool how the two Johns were the original homies - the original duo!
Some serious bromance going on there.
Portnoy was one of them too. They started the band together. Portnoy’s father recommended the name “dream theater”

You know Dream Theater is a great band when none of their fans can agree on their best work.
Yep, it seems almost every album they put out can be a fan favorite, have seen a different one at #1 on many lists of "best DT albums"
Great statement
This doc. This band. All this time later it still gives me some jet fuel❤

I can confidently say I didn't experience real music until I heard the Ocatavarium album - that album is and will always be one of the best that I will ever hear.
*Every* record DT has put out is a masterpiece.
That’s the first album I’d ever experienced that feeling too. It was on the way to track meets my sophomore year of high school (2009). My buddies were messing around, but I wanted to focus. So I’d lay on the bus seat with my headphones in jamming to this album.

Damn right.
Feast your eyes folks, John Myung playing a four string bass
I am surprised because in this video, they sort of apologize for making an album like Falling into Infinity. I don't know what they are talking about, because for sure that album is not the greatest album of the music history. For sure it is not the best Dream Theater album too. And it sounds also very different from the other albums. But in THAT album there are iconic DT songs like Lines in the sand, Hell's Kitchen, Trial of tears, Hollow Years, New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Anna Lee, Burning my Souls! I mean maybe I named all the songs in the album LOL Yes the other 3-4 tracks that I have not named, are that kind of tracks that Portnoy is complaining about. That kind of songs written "to satisfy the industry". And honestly we all felt that at the time. But the other songs are LEGIT Dream Theater songs!! It was just a different Dream Theater album, but it was GREAT. In his own way. And I always liked that album from the first day. I never understood all the criticism about that album, still today, more than 20 years after it came out. Anyway we had almost another 20 years of Dream Theater after this anniversary! This is amazing!
Yeah, man. Got you definitely. I just love FII and I too don't understand why they created this obscure atmosphere around this album. FII has amazing (yeah, amazing) songs... Much better than some from later albuns.
Still can't understand why they reject this album so much.
@@KakoSales85 I think they are complaining not so much about the album itself but about the atmosphere that surrounded making of this album. And sure, while most of the songs that ended up on the album are quite good, there was a bunch of songs that they also recorded during that period but which DIDN'T end up on the album - like Raising the Knife, or Metropolis part 2. The songs had to be cut in favor of some shorter, more commercial songs. And while in the end its maybe better that the 25 minute version of Metropolis part 2 did not make it onto the album, as it made way for "Scenes from the Memory", at the time the band could have been really frustrated about not being allowed to release that song.
I think its One of their absolut best ones....
I can't believe how well mixed Images and Words is. Why can't they sound like that again!!
+palonazo First of all, Images and Words is great... It's unique sound is bound together by their original keyboardist, Kevin Moore... Whom left the band while working on "Awake." It's the album that got us all hooked... BUT... It isn't every fans favorite anymore... Most albums post Falling into Infinity (Which still has some GREAT songs, most notably "Lines in the Sand" and John Myung's "Trial of Tears.") have been pretty fantastic... Especially Systematic Chaos (My favorite DT album to date) and Octavarium... Listen to them a little more carefully sir... You have to change things up sometimes to keep the peoples interest intact...
+Eric E Gutierrez I'm surprised you consider Systematic Chaos your favorite DT album to date, because to me (and to many others), it's one of their weaker efforts. You could tell they were working on a schedule and not in a way that allowed their songwriting to be more organic like older releases.
In my opinion, the DT sound that got me hooked stopped to exist when Kevin Moore left. People complain about Mangini now... they have no idea how much more significant the change to Rudess was than the change to Mangini. Moore was magic, he was the melancholy in all those great Awake songs. But I guess it all depends on when you started following the band and if you're in for the music or just for the CALCULATORRRR METALLLL. I'm a 90s boy I guess.
+palonazo Their new album is pretty solid.
Pulse
It is, but it's nowhere near Images and Words, Awake or Falling into infinity.
Dude dream theater changed my life. I love these guys and have never met them
Ive met only portnoy..
I love how the hair has gotten progressively less poofy xD
progressively 👻 hehe
yeah! Rush fans! I'm glad they settled on James Lebrie, I love his voice. All of them are masters at their craft. My personal favorite album is Train of Thought.
30th.
I Miss Portnoy...
+Barraco Barner trolling is cool
Vl1imir same :(
I miss him too, but Mike really is amazing. If I had a band that had its pick of drummers, I would want both of them!!!!
It would be kind of like Alien Vs. Predator; the best of both words!
Mangini is everything they need
Nice to see the beginning portion with emphasis on the three founding members (Portnoy's spirit is missed), and thankfully no angry granny wailing to be heard in this doc.
The first concert I'd ever been to was on this tour and to this day it remains the best concert I've ever been to, even though I've seen loads of great artists since then such as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Kanye West (and Dream Theater 4 more times).
John Myung is my fucking hero, thanks for your talent! Thank you Dream Theater!
+woundedhead He should write more songs... Trial of Tears is GENIUS... One of their best songs ever...
I've heard people say "I'd kill to play like Petrucci," "I wish I could play like Myung," "I want to learn keys like Rudess," etc.
In twenty years of being a fan, I have never, ever heard anyone say "i wish I could sing just like La Brie."
Here you have one... i would kill to have his voice.... like really... i play the guitar tho xD
I wish I could hit the notes he hits, just with my own voice thanks :')
I think he was fucking amazing in his heyday!
He has the same dilemma as Neal Morse. Some people just can't seem to stomach his voice. :D
He hits those high notes naturally.
Nowadays he's old and his voice is tired.
I love how he used to push out those vibratos on long held notes. Very unique and original.
A true band of original music, conception, and emotion... you will not be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really hope Portnoy and the gang do get back together at some point. I always felt he was the heart and soul of Dream Theater.
Liquid Tension Experiment 3 my dude.
@Andrew Salter Sure he'll get back on stage with them as a guest
Mike Mancini is way better
@@juniorthornton3819 I need to check out this Mancini guy! Is he as good as Mangini?
As much as I respect mangini and I like his playing, DT had less feeling and less soul since 2011 imo. But that’s just my preference. Still an awesome band nonetheless.
As a member of a local prog band this is SO inspiring to me... I even get watery eyes!
What an honorable band.
I got on listening to Dream Theater in 1994 and we had like a big company of friends who were all crazy about their music and after so many years they still have same appeal to our minds, great!
Beautiful... I love these guys so much... Best band EVER!!!
What a band man... I mean, what a career. THIS is what greatness looks like, these guys are some kind of heroes .
IMO, the greatest prog metal band of all time. Dream Theater is like the perfect storm of musicians. I've only seen them live once, but it was a dream concert for me. To see two of my favorite bands tour together, Dream Theater and Queensrÿche, was nothing short of amazing. The only thing that could have made it better would have been to see the 1988-1991 version of Queensrÿche.
I still remember talking to the band outside the Riviera club in Chicago after the show on the Awake tour. Thanks for all the great music over the years. Im still introducing your music to people.
I'm starting a new band with a guitarist that i grew up with. Our influences are Dream theater of course and Symphony X, Circus Maxmimus too. We're making a youtube channel soon so we can star making demos, because we really love music and we will study on berklee as well. All i got to say. Dream Theater, now i can die in peace.
pff yeah, good luck getting to Berklee and managing to finance the 4-5 years of studying, its like one of the most expensive colleges in usa
MrRafting shut up man. It's his dream. Not yours.

We all the dream theater fans is always supported you all guys...so keep rockin, keep writing music, and kerp sickness...you guyss rocks!!
I'm glad 300,000 people had the time to watch this. This shit is interesting
The fact that it was so difficult for them to make it in the industry being the 4 most talented musicians on the planet is seriously confusing..
They weren't the talent that labels wanted at the time. Think about it, labels back then were looking for a new Black Album, radiohits. Not progressive stuff.
DT were essentially an 80's act that didn't break until the 90's. Even during the 80's it was hard to sell progressive metal that wasn't Queensryche to the record industry.
Unless you are on an independent label, it’s hard to maintain 100 percent creative control over your music. Most labels want 3 min radio hits, not 12 min epics that showcase actual talent.
Blame the damn consumers who hate good music just because they can't bang their heads to 4/4 beats...

For the record I fucking love Awake, it is one of my favourite albums. Scarred and Voices are fantastic songs.
I started to listen DT last year a few month before I saw them on the Along for the Ride tour in Europe. Since then I listen DT almost daily. People say DT is no more like it was with Portnoy. Even though I'm glad they continued to sing after Portnoy's departure.
+VictoriusHD Agreed... Dream Theater still sounds great, and their newest album is among their best work... I still think Portnoy is the better drummer, but Mike Mangini still does the job very well... And they are still my favorite band no matter what...
+Eric E Gutierrez portnoy is pretty awful
Nathan Gonzalez, I don't know how one comes to that conclusion given his extraordinary skill set, but I respectfully disagree.
I remember the first time I heard "Pull Me Under" on the radio, and I thought to myself, "Yes! Finally a band who will save rock from the destructive non-ability of Kurt Cobain."
Thomas Romo leave Nirvana alone you annoying boomer
Nirvana had a very simple tone, but that tone hit the nerve of the time perfectly. Just because one band is more technical, it isn't better. I like Dream Theater more, but Nirvana was, and rightly so, one of the biggest bands rock has ever seen.

It's just so weird and mind-blowing that this band has existed more than a decade before I was even alive. They really have been around a long time. Which reminds me, take it easy on LaBrie! He's been doing this for so long of course he's not going to be able to sing like he used to. People can be just unnecessarily cruel.
Scenes is the best album, hands down. Musically, creatively, it's the epitome of everything they are. I can listen from beginning to end, and restart it again
Awesome. Hail Dream Theater. Great documentary, great music, great band.
And now three quarters of those fans are probably at their keyboards right now complaining about their newer stuff after black clouds and silver linings and how the astonishing is "an insult to mankind".
The sad thing is, those were the most enthusiastic dream theater fans I have ever seen, probably because I have never been to a concert.
I love Mike's punk-influenced attitude to the music he loves making. Falling Into Infinity was certainly a low point for them, thanks to those producers. You still gotta love them.
Wtf is wrong with you? What punk? Punk sucks and has no music in it, you'll never see the gods play shit.
Sebax pffff you know nothing.
Sebax I meant his attitude to making music. Because Dream Theater's sound is unique and, well, progressive, the producers for Falling Into Infinity tried to take that Unique point from Dream Theater and churn out generic hits. This is something no punk would ever do. They eschew the music industry trying to screw them over. Thus, Mike's attitude is similar to punk musicians. I didn't say they PLAYED punk music.
Toxic Potato
exactly.
Sebax Do you know anything about punk music?
''we just shot our load on every level'' yes, mike, you sure as fuck did.

JAMES IS PERFECT FOR DREAM THEATER..IT'S LIKE.."NAILED IT"
I think it would be cool if they re-recorded When Dream and Day Unite with the current lineup
Why? I think once something is done its done
Love the early DT sound. The bass is punchy and distinct from the guitar. Very Rush/Yes. Later on, it’s more molded into the background.
Love this!
Gosh, Labrie's voice was soooo amazing at the time ! I'll always feel sad for him and DT about when he had his vocal injury, I mean, just imagine how it would be.... Listen to the live at marquee, especially Metropolis, the best Metropolis live ever !!! Labrie's sang like a god !
Awake is the grooviest dt record
I remember spending hours upon hours, in 7th, 8th & 9th grade, memorizing the notes from the Appetite songbook to learn all of the g n r songs... good times!!!
Only started listening to DT after picking up the "Greatest Hit" album on an impulse but, fell in love with them almost straight away. A truly great band!
On a side note: I got into Megadeth in much the same way, when I impulsively bought their Rude Awakening DVD. Love at first watch!

It's crazy how big things that happen in life don't really happen all the time. But every now and then something huge happens whether it's with history ,science, political, spiritual and now with DT musically. Not taking away from the greats lineups like journey,YES,Genesis, on and on etc.

So, I actually had no clue who dream theater were until relatively late. I wasn't much of a prog guy but portnoys liquid drum theater DVD converted me into a fan for life 🤘🏻
1:05: When he says they change like no other band, I say Rush lol. Both have changed profusely, but I think Rush, considering they're like 10-11 years older than DT, they've changed more than this band. Bottom line, both are awesome. This is just my opinion, but I'm open to differences and other opinions
I would agree, except that Rush is a little older...they started in 1968. But Rush has definitely changed the most of any band I know. Dream Theater is definitely a second though
I love how you're like "I disagree but open to discussion" on the internet. Mature as fuck. Good on ya, bro.
it's pretty simple actually. DT are heavily influenced by Rush. so Rush changed the world with their music, then DT took it to the next level. but bottom line is, as you said, they're both great.
Rush went through phases in their history. From their debut to Moving Pictures they were 70s prog rock, then in the 1980s they went through sort of a synthpop/new wave phase with Geddy Lee playing more keyboards. Presto to Clockwork Angels is more of the traditional prog.
fraroc first time we listened to rush we thought "who´s the femal singer".took a decade to know who geddy is.im into rush since 20years now.rush is a music fairytale, allways !!!!!!!!!

I clicked into this cause of Myung was at the thumbnail, although he didn't say much: The add at 1:55 HAH! Dat... Well, Myung is Myung.
I've seen Dream Theater 3 times and for my money, they are the best band ever in the progressive metal genre and have made some of the finest music ever
1:57 fucking nice CGI of John Myung talking looks like a real John Myung
I think Scenes From A Memory, Images and Words, Train of Thought, and A Dramatic Turn of Events are their best albums. I don't know what the craze is about Octavarium, the only aspects that stood out to me are the title track and The Root of All Evil.
Panic Attack is a killer tune
18:00 James LaBrie is exactly why I like this band
I love dream theater as well, I think they are the best band that I've ever heard before, they improve with the time, they are a very talented guys, God bless them!

The fact that they pulled off Images and Words when alt rock was slaying everything in its path is hard to believe. People recall how alternative’s sudden rise threw the whole music industry off balance. Lot of labels forced their artists who change their image. It was a crazy time. It wasn’t just hair metal that got axed, but metal in general.
I&W and Awake are magical albums. All their albums are great. But there was something magical about DT from 92'-00'.
Agreed plus I put ACoS in there. That song is incredible.
Haha, that main theme from the 2002 release has "Schism" of Tool written all over it.
