He-Man's secret that he kept, is the literal Platonic ideal of the Just Man. The man who does justice even when he receives no recognition for it. But no, that's "selfish" now.

after Adam said _"but I died!"_ and then Teela says _"and we had to live with it."_ You know the writers in that room thought they were writing at the same level as Shakespeare. 😆 Writing something so profound but the audience just saw it as selfish. The writers of the show have the writing equivalency of self-important 12-year-olds.

I haven't gotten to that part. But, the way others have presented it, I think they were going for the grieving friend/girlfriend angle on that.
They definitely were going that way in the first episode at least.
The whole "Nobody told me" thing gets compared with the line in Invincible. But honestly? There is no comparison.
Amber was 100% selfish there. If she's smart enough to figure out his identity, she's art enough to understand the risks that come with people knowing your secret identity.
With Teela, she was grieving a friend and lashed out at those who didn't let her truly know him. It's a much more understandable anger if you know the history.
But that's the problem. They don't show the history. This is supposed to be the reboot, you shouldn't need to have watched either series that came before in order to understand it.

The weirdest thing about the way Teela acted was that in the old show, every treated her with respect. They treated her as a warrior. Because she was one. It's only in this show where they pull this whole thing where she had to prove herself and defy everyone's expectations when in the old everyone new how good she was, she didn't have to prove anything. Her becoming man at arms is completely believable because going we already know what she's capable of. And she shouldn't have been angry about the guy lying. She should have been sad because her friend sacrificed himself to save her and everyone else.

  • @6Theories
    @6Theories 3 роки тому +178

Honestly, Teela's arc feels more like a bad villain's origin story rather than a hero's journey. When facing a father grieving the death of his child her primary concern is the fact that she was lied to. When facing the hero who sacrificed himself to save the world from ruin her primary concern is the fact that he left her. She seemingly lacks any empathy and thinks the world revolve solely around her. I'd argue she gives even Skeletor a run for his money.
Like Oz aptly pointed out, this could've made sense if she started out arrogant and over the course of the season learned to be humble and place others' need before her own. But she's doesn't; she's the same self-important jagg-off throughout the whole season.

There are other female characters who also display the same tendencies.
So... maybe this reflects something of how these script writers feel about women and their roles.

At this point it feels like a hive mind is writing all these shows and movies. Each and every single one is so predictable in its agenda. You'll get some combination of a Mary Sue female with no flaws, an established male character being emasculated or a buffoon, a female character taking something from a male character and proclaiming it as her own making, male characters acting feminine, female characters acting like a douchey meat head, an unknown character being first perceived as a man later being revealed as a woman, females always being in positions of power and being infallible, and males always being in the villian role and being irredeemable.
Go down the list Ghostbusters 2016, Terminator Woke Fate, Disney SW, Charlie's Angels reboot, Batwoman, James Bond, Star Trek, Dr. Who, Loki, Black Widow, Captain Marvel, HeMan and more are all comprised of those elements. It's like the powers that be are trying to get women to become douchey men in order to exact revenge against the effeminate male subordinates.

I really don't get all the changes - Teela always was a capable character in her own right. Yes sometimes she was in trouble needed saving, but so did all other characters on the show, including He-Man (well, Adam specifically). And Teela also had her moments of glory.
Besides - there was always the She-ra franchise with a strong female lead. She-ra was in some regards even more capable than He-Man - he was physically stronger but did not always act in the smartest way possible, while She-ra almost as often outwitted her enemies as overcoming them with brute force.
It's completely unnecessary to rewrite all the characters to fit modern ideologies.

As a 30 year old straight man, I genuinely enjoyed it a lot. Because it preached positivity in all forms, without trying to vilify men or straight people. Plus, it did a great job of keeping characters core traits, while also adding some legitimate depth and growth throughout the series.

Whatever one may think of Gal Gadot as an actor, no one in their right mind could accuse her of being mannish, and she looks nothing like the grotesquely over muscled female characters of Master of the Universe; Revelation. About Adam being Adam and not He-Man in heaven: My personal Headcanon (and I say it like that because Smoth DEFINATELY doesn't see it that way) is that Adam is making a statement. Every other He-Man before him embraced that Muscular appereance and chose to stay like that in heaven. But not Adam. Adam probably loves to be the generic guy, the dependable, but kinda awkward guy. Because he KNOWS that He-Man to him is nothing more than a facade. This Muscles he builds, that Power he has when he is transformed, all that is just that: POWER! But the good things he did? the self sacrifice? the will to act to save others and not care about his own safety? that is not He-Man! That is Adam! It is still him who makes those decisions! Even without power, he would still at least TRY to do all those heroic acts! Not because it is his destiny, not because it is fate, not because he is He-Man, BUT he does it because it is the right thing to do and it is something he WANTS to do, regardless if he has the power or not!
And maybe, IF Smith is trying to save this tragedy, this is what will get to Teela! She sees how hard Adam trys (IF he is still alive), probably see him fail, questioning him on why he is doing all this dispite being powerless, and him pointing to her that it is the right thing, that he does it because he wants to do it, and that the moment he has to back down, is the moment he TRULY dies, not physically, but figuratively, letting EVERYONE down, only because he didn't try or didn't try hard enough.
BUT I have no hopes left. But I would be willing to watch the next season if it is going on like this in SOME way.

Agreed. I think the "Subverted!" "Woke!" seems over exaggerated. but the writing point is dead on. The actual set up (He-man dying and what came after) would work just fine, and even Teela's narcissistic actions would be fine. But the problem is it is senseless and comes to no conclusion. She doesn't change. Her freakout over Adam's death and the cover up is unreasonable, and given the personality given to her engineer companion, Evil-Lyn, or Orko, it would and should have been called out. if the writing had any conclusion to it. The underworld part was worse than simply the whole "I'm afraid of my strength", the worst thing is that it makes no f'ing sense. If anything Teela is clearly afraid of being weak, so why not just say that. Might actually have been a nice foil against Adam, who (at least in the adaptions I've seen) is a little more ambivalent about being He-man then some one with Revelation Teela's character would be.

AFTER scratching the nostalgia itch, a multi-episode arc where all the minor characters all get to shine could be fascinating, not hated. The worst thing about this show is that the concept itself is actually not bad at all however the biggest problem here is that the pieces are completely in the wrong places, first off make Duncan the lead character and you don’t disgrace the man; have him be stoic and wise as he is the Man-At-Arms but have him experience many moments of doubts and fears to show him struggle in a world without Adam. (Similar to early S5 Samurai Jack) Orko should be the secondary main character and travel with Duncan every step of the journey, have him built up to be more serious and getting much stronger with his magic; there’s no need to kill him off as he’s far from a screw up and can be very helpful to Duncan on their quest while being his moral compass and also constantly struggling with his own inner demons.
Teela should stay to protect the kingdom and she should be a compassionate leader to her troops while Duncan’s away and comforting Adam’s grieving parents, also have her design be a mixture of both the 80’s and 2003 version (no mental illness haircut whatsoever) and finally you have Adam sacrifice himself in the fifth episode while not emasculating him whatsoever as he was the original hero of the story, treat him with respect so that when he’s gone the impact will actually mean SOMETHING.
That’s how you do it right, I doubt anyone will read the whole thing but I just wanted to put my two cents out there as this storyline CAN work with actual good writing and setup.

I don't want to pull an ACKSHUALLY, but it is worth saying that the reason Orko's magic doesn't work properly is that magic works differently on his homeworld as opposed to on Eternia. Orko can stay a comic relief, but his development can come more from better self-control and planning (not trying to solve everything with one spell), and thinking quicker on his feet to adapt to when his magic doesn't do what he wants to.

To be fair, if she'd been using anger at the perceived betrayal as an unhealthy coping mechanism of sorts, and later had a breakdown where she fully expressed her grief over the fact that he was dead and some sort of regret at something or other she'd done while channeling that anger (maybe breaking a gift he'd given her, or destroying a painting or statue of him that was the last such thing made while he was alive, or something similarly significant), and this was all in a relatively short period of time, I'd be able to see that as a believable character arc. Not a healthy one, but a believable one.

Well, I'm gonna talk about MY feelings right now: I'm feeling GRATEFULL that I watched this video before I watched any more episodes of this TERRIBLE series. Dude, in the very moment that the King diminished Adam saying (basically) that his son have never made him proud I noticed something was very wrong. The thing only went from bad to worse when Teela continued talking.
All He-Man cartoons have always been about teaching morals and good behavior, and one of the most important traits of good people is loyalty. It was bad enough that the king, in his grief, banished the man-at-arms for his lies, but didn't give a sh*t about his own queen lying too. Yeah, it wasn't a trait of that same king in the old cartoons, but it's understandable. He has lost his son, and the projected his angry in someone that have been more loyal to the prince than to he king himself. Bad, but understandable. But Teela? Dude, she should have been executed right there! No one can talk to his/her king or queen the way she did! And the most shocking part: if her loyalty to the kingdom meaned so little to her, why and how could she earn the tittle that she have earner on the very beginning of that episode? She is loyal only to herself and her pride...
You know, I have been afraid of not being a good writter. I have been doubting of my own capacities to write and publish my content. But after watching The Legend of the Lake (that one with the girl from "13 reasons why" being merlin's daughter) and this 1st episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelations, I know that not only in Brazil but in the whole world there are plenty sh*tty writters publishing and making money with garbage... That makes me feel I have a chance.

Rotoscoping was done all the time. In truth it's still done with cartoons all the time. Though now with it being digital you can modify those animations to hide it better.
But even Disney did a lot of Rotoscoping even if they did modify things a little more. Drawing each frame by hand one by one is just expensive and animation doesn't have nearly the audiance it does today. Computers really have led to a golden age of animation as you can actually cut a lot of corners without the quality suffering too much. You don't need to have Disney level resources to make something decent looking.

At the point we see her she has not gotten past her anger. Her being hurt about not knowing Adam was He-Man and her arrogant attitude is setting her up for a redemption arc where she has ro learn to fight with Adam instead of his alter ego. And I can see the next arc She-Ra falling to skeletor and Teela being forced to take up her sword and gaining THE POWER thus finally learning why Adam didn't want the world to know he what he was by noone realizing as She-ra it was teela beneath. Third arc be classic heman power trip with Mark Hamil going full joker

The "man/men" part in words like "policeman", "beastmen" (fantasy race), "elves and men", ect. doesn't refer to the male sex at all. In old English and the Germanic languages "man" meant "human" or "person". The word for "man" and "woman" back then was "wer" and "wyf". You can see the word "wer" in "werewolf" (so technically a female werewolf should be called a "wyfwolf" lol). The word "wyf" likely transformed into the word "wife" that we have today.
