She-Ra: Princess of Power is an American animated series produced in 1985 by Filmation. A spin-off of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, She-Ra: Princess of Power was aimed primarily at a young female audience to complement He-Man's popularity with young males.
At the time He-Man was still reaching a mostly male audience and Filmation and Mattel decided to target a whole new audience by creating She-Ra: Princess of Power.
Did it work? Depends on who you ask.

She wasn't meant to. He-Man had the Sword of Power while She-Ra had the Sword of Protection. She-Ra was more about protection than power, which is why she had abilities that He-Man didn't have, like the ability to heal.

      The Horde is the best!
The _Masters of the Universe: Origins_ Horde figures have been amazing so far. Mosquitor is great, with the same blood sucking action as the original, Leech comes with swappable hands and head with suction cup versions, but Mantenna is _absolutely badass._ The figure actually has _four full legs_ with independent hip joints for each, unlike the original '80s version that just had two legs with a groove in each to make them kinda look like four skinny little legs.
I can't wait for more Horde figures from the _Origins_ line... and I am _really seriously hoping_ that they make a Modulok _Origins_ figure! Just _imagine_ what they could do with Modulok using contemporary toy engineering techniques!

Interestingly my introduction to He-Man as a toy was a girl who had the He-Man figure in the year or so preceding the cartoon. As much as I think She-Ra was a great addition to the product line and mythos, I do think Mattel underestimated He-Man’s appeal to girls since there were at least some girls who liked He-Man to begin with. I think the decline in MOTU had less to do with She-Ra and more to do with ThunderCats. Both TCats and She-Ra made their cartoon debut in the fall of 1985 and TCats was arguably the breakout hit of that season. It really did not help that ThunderCats was a similar magic/sci-fi hybrid like MOTU down to the male lead (Lion-O) possessing a magic sword.
As far as the toys I pretty much only had the MOTU figures as a child. But the She-Ra cartoon was awesome and IMO not a huge problem for boys to get into. Adora/She-Ra was a great heroine to follow and Filmation’s background art was always a delight from the colorful Whispering Woods to the mechanized and dark Fright Zone. I also enjoyed many of the supporting characters, particularly Madame Razz and Broom.

Yeah, the hand-off confused me as a kid, too. My neighbor got the toys and we were super excited to combine our figures in play, but her figures were so much smaller and out of scale with mine. The cloth and doll hair was strange to me and meant you couldn't play in the sand, dirt, mud, water, etc like I did with my MOTU figures. And the mini comics were also super different... the MOTU stuff was comic styled with gritty and near mature storytelling... while POP was more storybook influenced with pastel colors and more childish stories.

The only toys that went outside were specifically designed for it, let alone in the sandbox. That was reserved for sand-specific toys and the occasional Tonka truck, because that was back when they were made of steel, practically indestructible, and they had some explicit sand/dirt moving play features.

A lot of the male and female character duos like this seem to be cousins, this puts He-man and She-ra in a special class since they're brother and sister. She-ra breaks many traditions and that's a big part of what makes her really inspiring. Her fighting spirit is also really cool. I've been following the Netflix series for a long time now, and it's very entertaining. Someday I'll take a look at the original show too. Thanks for the info!

She-Ra was not conceived as a twin sister of Teela. Princess of Power was originally intended to be a Masters of the Universe spin-off starring Teela. The Girls Toys division at Mattel thought it would be problematic if the star of the spin-off was the non-powered girlfriend of He-Man, so they conceived of She-Ra as a long-lost twin sister, so they would be equals.

I wouldn't necessarily say that She-Ra was what killed He-Man. There's a sizeable article on what exactly happened on a site called flyingmoose. But the situation can't be summed up in one sentence. It was multiple factors that did the MOTU franchise in. Part of it was its own success, like you said. It became a TV series, a toy line, a comic series and even had its name on lunchboxes. But other shows like Transformers and G.I. Joe came in and did the same thing, siphoning sales away from the MOTU line. Basically they saw what the MOTU line did and thought that idea was just DANDY, and did it themselves. Eventually, L'Oreal bought Filmation and hastily shuttered the company, terminating the entire staff (I believe a day or two before legislation would pass requiring companies to give 60 days' notice before a mass termination). One of the animators mentioned they pretty much just walked in and said, 'Put down your pencils and get out'. And that was the end of it.

So yeah, Dreamworks' SheRa just carries on the legacy of her mother in ruffling the feathers of conservatives about what should be a feminine body type.
