My husband noticed his tight grip on the steering wheel and ever since he loosened his grip while driving he's much more relaxed and it helped him "let go" of other things in life much easier because of it! No wonder this small habit changed his WHOLE life in a BIG way!! ❤❤❤❤❤
So interesting. I've been having neck issues for so many years, never thought my hands could possibly be involved. I will start paying more attention to my hands!
even though it looks very gentle it makes big difference which we mostly don't notice during our every moment movement. thank you Taro for drawing attention to such simple but deep awareness to how we use our body.
Thank you Taro for bringing awareness to the connection between the hands and the neck! I noticed this connection a few months back when I was writing in my notebook. I was shocked at how tightly I was gripping my pen. I could sense that tension rippling up towards my neck. That's when I realized that I needed to soften my hands when I engage in writing tasks. I love the visual of the jellyfish hands. I feel like that will help remind me to keep soft hands while typing and when reaching for items. I love that you spoke about the connection between these habitual movement patterns and the breath. Really fascinating stuff! Thank you once again 🙏
thanks for sharing! when I began trying this out I got teased for having "limp hands"... but on the other hand (hehe) I drove through winding mountains at night, pretty scary, but when I softened my grip and just focused on my breath ... it became fun!
75 yrs old, typical arthritis in hands, so I do feel this hand movement difference. It feels like my hands like it, as though it's comforting....hard to explain. I'll definitely be working on this. Thank you! Oh yes! I feel a difference in my breath as though breathing got easier. This is so interesting.
Fascinating thing we learned working with wild mustang horses. If we were near them and could release the tension in our hands they would be more likely to approach is. Domestic horses as well 👀. Made me much more aware of our connections!
Thanks! Neck pain is a real challenge! Every thing I’ve tried including your exercises causes pain. I know it is the brain sending false messages but the fear is so great that I always stop as soon as I feel pain. But the idea of just softening my hands is appealing. Surely I can learn to do that!!! Really appreciate you !
I was told about the hand and neck connection by a physiotherapist few years ago and of course in the meantime forgot about that. So it’s good to get reminded about that. Thank you Taro.
That makes sense! I have so much discomfort/ pain in my right arm from wrist to shoulder. I am definitely a “gripper”. I already had been trying to not grip so much but thanks to you and your video I see how important this is. I like the term “jellyfish hands”😊
This is a fantastic video awareness lesson, Taro! So simple. So profound in the outcome it fosters to relieve neck tension. I love the idea of moving with "soft hands." I did the movements along with you and really began to realize how much tension is created in the neck when I'm sitting at the keyboard or doing my morning Sudoku puzzle! Important, life-changing information demonstrated so beautifully! Thank you so much, Taro!
I've also noticed keeping the hands and wrists properly aligned helps. Think of the neural connections from the neck down as water running through a hose. I'm playing a computer game that requires speed. I learned that I can lightly touch a key with my fingers faster than pushing the keys. If I can pay less attention to making choices my speed and success improve. I recall when working in cardiac rehab that holding a person's elbow I could feel when the shoulders were tight and would find the blood pressure elevated. Asking the person to pay attention to the tension in the shoulder and release and breathe the blood pressure could fall to near normal.
Definitely noticed a difference! I wish I’d know this years ago but it’s never too late to learn. QUESTION: due to excessive stress from PTSD and anxiety, I’m holding so much tension in my body and have great difficulty sleeping. Any chance you could do a video about this?❤
yes never too late to learn! as you know, our body and mind are connected and they move together. State of our body reflects the state of our mind. You could also say the state of our body reflects the state of our nervous system. So we can regulate our nervous system and regulate state of our body and mind. How do we do that? It's simpler than you may think. We connect with our body by bringing our attention to our body in the moment, that is how I teach movement, and how I practice movement. This is a part of nervous system retraining and movement retraining. So to me, movement practice has a meditation component. Meditation helps with pain, stress, anxiety, tension, etc because of that. All my movement lessons focus on this, so if you learn how to connect with your body and how to practice movement from this perspective, they can all help you with your body tension due to excessive stress.
This is so helpful. Im a climber and getting on(62) so i need to make my foot and hip movement optimal, while also keeping my hands as soft as possible.
I have had neck pain for years, I notice that during the day for no reason, I seem to be very tense at times, I then become aware that I’m clenching my hands or fists, so I have to release the tension in my hands, it never occurred to me, that this is a connection for my neck pain. Thank you so much, ❤
I've had neck pain for 40 years with Fibromyalgia and now a pinched nerve in between my C 6-7 vertebrae. It actually hurts my neck to brush and floss my teeth! Thanks for this video!
Yes, Taro, makes a lot of difference from the habitual pattern that we have. Simple lessons make our lives easy, only if we realize it. Thanks for the wonderful lessons.
I love the feeling of the soft jellyfish hands. When l was working and using a computer l always had neck pain and a tight knot in my neck. The softer movement is so relaxing 😊
So interesting! After watching your video, I turned my head from side to side to sense a baseline of tension in my neck, then rolled a small red spikey ball between my hands for 30 seconds. Immediate relief!!
Great practical tips. I do try to be aware of my hands. Especially in terms of not gripping the steering wheel like you’re holding on for dear life your channel is excellent thank you for your excellent content.
What an interesting new idea!!! This will help to change my daily life, starting right now ^^ I am trying to type the letters with soft hands and it helps to relieve the tension on my shoulders. Many thanks for "Jelly fish hands" :)
i remember when a friend had to have emergency hand surgery, in the ward and the doctor allowed me to stay while he did it to help her feel safe - so i watched. He started by doing a freezing line from the neck down.; he explained to me that the tendon of the index finger goes right up - and showed me with a line of iodine . As a cyclist i know that if it's windy and i'm gripping that handlebar - i'm going to have a neck pain and stiff shoulder when i get home. Thankyou for this. When i go out to cycle and i get off my bike , i think of my cat making her happy paws and i do that with my hands. Another thing that i've noticed that is really important - i don't understand the make of gloves and winter coats - they both have cuffs - how does that work?? one will push against the other -and i notice that it is painful and restricts movement of the wrist. I have taken to cutting the cuffs out of either the jacket or the gloves, which ever I can tell will work best and It does help
Brilliant. You know what, I have had constant neck troubles for years. I have tried stretching and relaxation exercises which do help on a daily basis but the trouble is always present. My neck is stiff, knotted, noisy, immobile and is gradually worsening as I move towards my mid 60's. I have tried to retain good posture, good weight and fitness and apart from numerous old sports injuries I'm pretty good. I have never injured my neck (that I know of) but it gives me constant grief. Here's the thing: I have been an all weather motorcyclist for 46 odd years and I am a crafts person working with my hands, gripping and manipulating materials with my hands every day! I don't know how familiar you are with motorcycles but my clutch lever on my left hand is extremely heavy and my front brake lever on my right hand is also quite stiff and both are in constant use every few seconds in London traffic. Could this be the source of my neck trouble? If it is I am afraid there is little I can do about it because I'm not going to stop my craft or give up motorcycling but it's good to learn something from yourself that I hadn't realised and now that I'm aware I will try (as possible) to be more gentle! Thank You Sir.
i used to ride a motorcycle so yes i'm familiar with what you described. you can improve your overall movement patterns so you can support your neck and arms more efficiently and manipulate materials, riding a motorcycle more comfortably. my posture playlist, neck and shoulder playlist can provide you useful information, I think.
I always find myself holding my right hand in a fist when I am relaxing. This also explains that my right side of the body is always tense. Is it possible that the right arm gets swollen from all this fist tension? Thank you.
Thank you for this vdo. It's me who always gets tension on my hands, arms, shoulders, neck and head. I'll try your technique. I know that my problem comes from holding my phone.
@@TaroIwamoto Yes!! I've been practicing the jelly fish hands. It works perfectly. Since practicing the jelly fish hands, I've realized how much tension I always put to my whole body in every activity. I also realize that when standing I have put my weight on my left leg more than the other. How to correct that? Do you have a vdo for that?
@@Lisa-Sirisa Nice! I'm curious why you feel a need to correct how you stand. Everyone stands with more weight on one leg (I call it "standing leg") so when we walk, we always take a step with the same foot first.
@@TaroIwamoto Really. So now I don't need to worry about the weight on legs. Thank you🙏🏻 I thought the proper position would be equal weight to each leg. I went to a chiropractor and she said my back/spine bends toward the left side. I thought it's from putting more weight on the left leg. Thank you for your answer😊
@@Lisa-Sirisa many assume symmetry being the norm, but the truth is that we are naturally asymmetrical both structurally and functionally. many try to associate asymmetries with the cause of various issues and try to correct those asymmetries based on such assumption. A more important and helpful thing is whether you are aware of your body and your habitual movement patterns, and whether you have other options, choices. A lack of awareness keeps us stuck in our habitual patterns, which is not ideal. So, it is good that you became aware of your habitual standing pattern, so you can explore different ways of standing, moving your bodies without feeling like you need to correct or fix anything.
I also am sharing these with my Dad just turned 76 we both experience the same type of body pain & both have different arthritis diagnosis but also fibromyalgia… I strongly suspect tho that a lifetime of working with tension in the body is the greatest contributor… these videos are the most helpful I’ve ever found of all the different kinds on you tube!! 😅
A trained climber is very good at isolating muscle recruitment to achieve maximal strength and flexibility. Are there more variants to this?. As a violin player I found that the correct posture of the left arm can only be found without the instrument, finding the "spot" where is less tension and then puting the violin following that line, now I may try to soften more while doing this, because there is a just a difference of milimiters where your bicep start having tension (because we supinate the wrist and some angles of the arm give more or less tension to the bicep), the same when raising the arm
Thank you sir for sharing this. Truly a pleasure to listen and experience. I like how it's very practical and immediate, straight to the point, and respects the viewer time, energy, and obviously body. The comment you made for driving is very interesting, I'll try to keep this in mind each time I take the wheel. The fact that we hold the wheel with tension maybe has to do with reaction time, but as long as the reaction time and awareness when driving is the same, there's certainly no need to put so much tension on the wheel.
you're welcome. because body and mind are connected, emotions (fear, anxiety, stress) directly affect the state of our body. driving in the traffic is a great example. you can soften your hands, and soften your mind too:)
Reaching forward with tight/clenched hands seems to produce the most neck tension for me. Gonna try moving with jellyfish hands more often, as my neck gets very stiff and tense, especially if I'm stressed.
I noticed my left shoulder get sore when I played xbox now I understand why. Also your Monstera plant needs more light I guess there are no windows oppisite those plants? You can tell because of the distance between leaves and less gaps or fenestrations in the leaves Try to move it slowly nearer a window so it gets progressivly brighter light.
if there is a pen made out of a very soft material (i dont know if it exists), then you will have manipulate it very gently and softly. or you can simply play with a very delicate, fragile object, that will teach you how to soften your grip.
you're welcome! What do you you mean by "when we have to do workouts with weights?" Weight training provides benefits and serves specific purposes, but what do you mean by when we have to do?
I work as dental hygienist and good ergonomics are challenging. The majority of our motions are made with hands and fingers in a very tense position. What are your recommendations to counter the effects once the damage is done (assuming all efforts were already made to move/work smart.)?
I cannot believe how much tension is in our neck…I softened my right hand and the buzzing in my right ear was reduced significantly. Thank you…I just have to remember to keep doing it..what was the comment about our hands connected to our hips?
Hey, Taro, could you please specifically adress the problem of cervical dystonia in one of your videos? Being on of such people, i try a lot of techniques to get rid of tension, but it still goes back
Dear User: Just to be sure you have come to the right place I want to post what I found about cervical dystonia. "Cervical dystonia comes from the brain sending abnormal signals to the muscles, resulting in an incorrect set point. Neck sprains, sometimes called cervical sprain or muscle sprain, come from the muscles."
Dear User: I see you have a specialized condition. "Cervical dystonia comes from the brain sending abnormal signals to the muscles, resulting in an incorrect set point. Neck sprains, sometimes called cervical sprain or muscle sprain, come from the muscles."
some people have shared their experience, saying that breath awareness lessons helped them with their cervical dystonia. my guess is that any lessons that help regulate your nervous system can be helpful. when you bring your attention fully to your body, and practice movement, you're regulating your nervous system, and that is how I guide my students through any lessons.
Maybe this is why I have so much neck pain. I'm a restaurant server and we have to carry heavy plates and write and use the computer. It's a lot of hand tension.
Hi..my uncle accidentally fall down to the floor facing face first caused him having pinched nerve at C5 and C6. Currently he unable to stand on his own walk. He didnt want to go for surgery and just going for physiotherapy. Any method u can suggest to released that nerve. Please advice.
I have been having pain along the neck/trapezius/shoulder and arm areas for a while now and its affecting my breathing really bad. Massaging these places strangely enough opens up the airways again but its only for temporary. Im going to the neurology soon hope they can find what is causing the problem.
If massage helps, You might also want to consult a physical therapist trained in trigger point therapy. You may have a knot in a muscle creating the tension. Just a suggestion.
Thank you Taro 🙏🏻 no wonder when I lift weights , I suffer with neck stiffness for the next few days 🤪 I wonder if there is a technique that you can share that lessens the tension in the neck when lifting weights 🙏🏻
Thank you, that was very interesting. I have a question for you; I have been reading a lot of books lately and have noticed my neck and shoulders being affected by this. I never had a problem with them before. How can I simply overcome this.
Sir, i wish all the pianists practice what you teach in this video. They would be famous pianists . I would be one of them. 😊( i wish). I saw some pianists' hands dancing on the piano keyboard like swans...

One body, one state. The primordial state. It literally resolved every bit of this and all other permutations.
I've also noticed keeping the hands and wrists properly aligned helps. Think of the neural connections from the neck down as water running through a hose. When you kink the hose, the water flow is blocked. I've noticed this with musicians who develop repetitive use problems. A small change in awareness and alignment, while keeping the hands soft and expanded, can alleviate pain in a few days.

@@TaroIwamoto exactly ! Softening you body brings you to soften your mind, which brings you to soften your body, and it's a virtuous circle!
Thank you Taro.
You are so welcome :)
Reaching forward with tight/clenched hands seems to produce the most neck tension for me. Gonna try moving with jellyfish hands more often, as my neck gets very stiff and tense, especially if I'm stressed.
yes please incorporate soft hands more. this makes a difference!
Sir thank you, i am from Gujarat, India...sir last exercise are we to do ?
I noticed my left shoulder get sore when I played xbox now I understand why.
Also your Monstera plant needs more light I guess there are no windows oppisite those plants? You can tell because of the distance between leaves and less gaps or fenestrations in the leaves
Try to move it slowly nearer a window so it gets progressivly brighter light.
my wife said thank you for your advice!
How can we translate/teach this lesson to kids (and even adults) who grip their pens very tightly as they write?
if there is a pen made out of a very soft material (i dont know if it exists), then you will have manipulate it very gently and softly. or you can simply play with a very delicate, fragile object, that will teach you how to soften your grip.
Excellent ❤❤
:)
Thanku can u pls tell us about when we have to do workouts with weight?
you're welcome! What do you you mean by "when we have to do workouts with weights?" Weight training provides benefits and serves specific purposes, but what do you mean by when we have to do?
Very good info here. Thanks for the tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have an exercise that connects scm neck muscle to the wrist? Are they connected?
I work as dental hygienist and good ergonomics are challenging. The majority of our motions are made with hands and fingers in a very tense position. What are your recommendations to counter the effects once the damage is done (assuming all efforts were already made to move/work smart.)?
Thanks I have a stiff neck and it gets tired to. I just subscribed to your channel. Do you have an opinion on ringing in the ears?
Hi! Try my breath awareness lesson to calm and regulate the nervous system. That might help with ringing in the ears.
I have C2 and C3 issues from whiplash
I cannot believe how much tension is in our neck…I softened my right hand and the buzzing in my right ear was reduced significantly. Thank you…I just have to remember to keep doing it..what was the comment about our hands connected to our hips?
was that the comment i made? Arms are an extension of our torso, pelvis/hips. Maybe that's what I was refering to.
I love your stuff. I have been waking with neck pain off and on for a month. ??? I have yet to figure out what I am doing to cause it.
Look up "overuse injury." And "Tech neck". And "Text neck."
@@kathym6603thank you
have you changed your pillow or mattress recently? changed your activities?
Good question, I have the same problem.
I noticed when I do TRX, plank, dog bird excercises ,grip a lot and when I chop or clean …my neck is always painful esp in left side thank you
great observation!
I like to look up slightly toward the ceiling when doing weighted shoulder or arm exercises, seems to help with neck tension.
Reaching with a soft hand just feels delicious anyway. ❤
nice!
Thank you, that was very interesting. I have a question for you; I have been reading a lot of books lately and have noticed my neck and shoulders being affected by this. I never had a problem with them before. How can I simply overcome this.
I personally have my arms supported by a table so i can hold a book at my eye level without straining my neck and shoulders.
Thank you.@@TaroIwamoto
Maybe I am holding me Barbell to tightly when working out
Sir, i wish all the pianists practice what you teach in this video. They would be famous pianists . I would be one of them. 😊( i wish).
I saw some pianists' hands dancing on the piano keyboard like swans...
my son's piano teacher practices aikido, and incorporates similar principles into her teaching, so she talks about soft hands in playing piano :)
I came here to say that soft hands is a baseline skill for most pianists. It 100% affects the tone you produce.
I first learned soft hands with piano lessons, starting with Suzuki method.
It's like when you speak another language. You become a different person, to a certain extent. These movements are like another language.
this changes the entire quality!
