    My husband noticed his tight grip on the steering wheel and ever since he loosened his grip while driving he's much more relaxed and it helped him "let go" of other things in life much easier because of it! No wonder this small habit changed his WHOLE life in a BIG way!! ❤❤❤❤❤

    even though it looks very gentle it makes big difference which we mostly don't notice during our every moment movement. thank you Taro for drawing attention to such simple but deep awareness to how we use our body.

    Thank you Taro for bringing awareness to the connection between the hands and the neck! I noticed this connection a few months back when I was writing in my notebook. I was shocked at how tightly I was gripping my pen. I could sense that tension rippling up towards my neck. That's when I realized that I needed to soften my hands when I engage in writing tasks. I love the visual of the jellyfish hands. I feel like that will help remind me to keep soft hands while typing and when reaching for items. I love that you spoke about the connection between these habitual movement patterns and the breath. Really fascinating stuff! Thank you once again 🙏

    This is a fantastic video awareness lesson, Taro! So simple. So profound in the outcome it fosters to relieve neck tension. I love the idea of moving with "soft hands." I did the movements along with you and really began to realize how much tension is created in the neck when I'm sitting at the keyboard or doing my morning Sudoku puzzle! Important, life-changing information demonstrated so beautifully! Thank you so much, Taro!

    I've also noticed keeping the hands and wrists properly aligned helps. Think of the neural connections from the neck down as water running through a hose. When you kink the hose, the water flow is blocked. I've noticed this with musicians who develop repetitive use problems. A small change in awareness and alignment, while keeping the hands soft and expanded, can alleviate pain in a few days.

    I'm playing a computer game that requires speed. I learned that I can lightly touch a key with my fingers faster than pushing the keys. If I can pay less attention to making choices my speed and success improve. I recall when working in cardiac rehab that holding a person's elbow I could feel when the shoulders were tight and would find the blood pressure elevated. Asking the person to pay attention to the tension in the shoulder and release and breathe the blood pressure could fall to near normal.

    Definitely noticed a difference! I wish I’d know this years ago but it’s never too late to learn. QUESTION: due to excessive stress from PTSD and anxiety, I’m holding so much tension in my body and have great difficulty sleeping. Any chance you could do a video about this?❤

    • @TaroIwamoto
      @TaroIwamoto  11 місяців тому +8

      yes never too late to learn! as you know, our body and mind are connected and they move together. State of our body reflects the state of our mind. You could also say the state of our body reflects the state of our nervous system. So we can regulate our nervous system and regulate state of our body and mind. How do we do that? It's simpler than you may think. We connect with our body by bringing our attention to our body in the moment, that is how I teach movement, and how I practice movement. This is a part of nervous system retraining and movement retraining. So to me, movement practice has a meditation component. Meditation helps with pain, stress, anxiety, tension, etc because of that. All my movement lessons focus on this, so if you learn how to connect with your body and how to practice movement from this perspective, they can all help you with your body tension due to excessive stress.

    i remember when a friend had to have emergency hand surgery, in the ward and the doctor allowed me to stay while he did it to help her feel safe - so i watched. He started by doing a freezing line from the neck down.; he explained to me that the tendon of the index finger goes right up - and showed me with a line of iodine . As a cyclist i know that if it's windy and i'm gripping that handlebar - i'm going to have a neck pain and stiff shoulder when i get home. Thankyou for this. When i go out to cycle and i get off my bike , i think of my cat making her happy paws and i do that with my hands. Another thing that i've noticed that is really important - i don't understand the make of gloves and winter coats - they both have cuffs - how does that work?? one will push against the other -and i notice that it is painful and restricts movement of the wrist. I have taken to cutting the cuffs out of either the jacket or the gloves, which ever I can tell will work best and It does help

    Brilliant. You know what, I have had constant neck troubles for years. I have tried stretching and relaxation exercises which do help on a daily basis but the trouble is always present. My neck is stiff, knotted, noisy, immobile and is gradually worsening as I move towards my mid 60's.
    I have tried to retain good posture, good weight and fitness and apart from numerous old sports injuries I'm pretty good.
    I have never injured my neck (that I know of) but it gives me constant grief.
    Here's the thing: I have been an all weather motorcyclist for 46 odd years and I am a crafts person working with my hands, gripping and manipulating materials with my hands every day!
    I don't know how familiar you are with motorcycles but my clutch lever on my left hand is extremely heavy and my front brake lever on my right hand is also quite stiff and both are in constant use every few seconds in London traffic.
    Could this be the source of my neck trouble? If it is I am afraid there is little I can do about it because I'm not going to stop my craft or give up motorcycling but it's good to learn something from yourself that I hadn't realised and now that I'm aware I will try (as possible) to be more gentle!
    Thank You Sir.

    • @TaroIwamoto
      @TaroIwamoto  Рік тому +5

      i used to ride a motorcycle so yes i'm familiar with what you described. you can improve your overall movement patterns so you can support your neck and arms more efficiently and manipulate materials, riding a motorcycle more comfortably. my posture playlist, neck and shoulder playlist can provide you useful information, I think.

    • @TaroIwamoto
      @TaroIwamoto  11 місяців тому +2

      @@Lisa-Sirisa many assume symmetry being the norm, but the truth is that we are naturally asymmetrical both structurally and functionally. many try to associate asymmetries with the cause of various issues and try to correct those asymmetries based on such assumption. A more important and helpful thing is whether you are aware of your body and your habitual movement patterns, and whether you have other options, choices. A lack of awareness keeps us stuck in our habitual patterns, which is not ideal. So, it is good that you became aware of your habitual standing pattern, so you can explore different ways of standing, moving your bodies without feeling like you need to correct or fix anything.

    A trained climber is very good at isolating muscle recruitment to achieve maximal strength and flexibility.
    So super hard hands at choice with zero neck recruitment unless loaded to support body weight. Hard hands are often - in climbing - used to jam cracks, rather than grip.
    To soften your hand, place behind /below the hip -lengthen the arm, and shake out the tension. Then do the other hand.
    Riding motorcycles jellyfish hands and arms are critical for performance riding. Novices grip like grim death and the bike responds by spitting them off, until they learn jellyfish hands and arms.

  • @kamikan22
    @kamikan22 Рік тому +1

    Are there more variants to this?. As a violin player I found that the correct posture of the left arm can only be found without the instrument, finding the "spot" where is less tension and then puting the violin following that line, now I may try to soften more while doing this, because there is a just a difference of milimiters where your bicep start having tension (because we supinate the wrist and some angles of the arm give more or less tension to the bicep), the same when raising the arm

    The comment you made for driving is very interesting, I'll try to keep this in mind each time I take the wheel. The fact that we hold the wheel with tension maybe has to do with reaction time, but as long as the reaction time and awareness when driving is the same, there's certainly no need to put so much tension on the wheel.

    How can we translate/teach this lesson to kids (and even adults) who grip their pens very tightly as they write?

    • @TaroIwamoto
      @TaroIwamoto  11 місяців тому +1

      if there is a pen made out of a very soft material (i dont know if it exists), then you will have manipulate it very gently and softly. or you can simply play with a very delicate, fragile object, that will teach you how to soften your grip.

      Dear User: Just to be sure you have come to the right place I want to post what I found about cervical dystonia. "Cervical dystonia comes from the brain sending abnormal signals to the muscles, resulting in an incorrect set point. Neck sprains, sometimes called cervical sprain or muscle sprain, come from the muscles."

      Dear User: I see you have a specialized condition. "Cervical dystonia comes from the brain sending abnormal signals to the muscles, resulting in an incorrect set point. Neck sprains, sometimes called cervical sprain or muscle sprain, come from the muscles."

      @TaroIwamoto  Рік тому +2

      some people have shared their experience, saying that breath awareness lessons helped them with their cervical dystonia. my guess is that any lessons that help regulate your nervous system can be helpful. when you bring your attention fully to your body, and practice movement, you're regulating your nervous system, and that is how I guide my students through any lessons.

    I have been having pain along the neck/trapezius/shoulder and arm areas for a while now and its affecting my breathing really bad. Massaging these places strangely enough opens up the airways again but its only for temporary. Im going to the neurology soon hope they can find what is causing the problem.

      If massage helps, You might also want to consult a physical therapist trained in trigger point therapy. You may have a knot in a muscle creating the tension. Just a suggestion.
