    I was stuck. Had all tick marks except the bottom one. If it weren't for you I'd have trashed my ferrarri (summit wagon). Once I lined up that bottom notch ran smooth like a baby. You saved me dough and wife's heartache. I'd have had to take her car for the weak.

    Trying to remember off the top of my head. There is a mark on the timing sprocket which you align to a tab on the valve cover for top dead center. Once you have the crank sprocket,oil sprocket and idler sprocket aligned it's a matter of putting the belt on when they are all aligned.

    Awesome thanks. It sounds like its defenatly the alternator belt. I'll loosen it up. as far as the alternator it was free flowing just fine im thinking either the alternator might be going out being that its a 2000 eclipse and have never replaced it. the weird thing is that i was not losing power prior to this but I do know that if the belt isn't properly tentioned it could be messing with the amps

    My guess is one of two things were missed. Counter balance shaft or oil pump shaft were not timed properly. The oil pump shaft gear can be one of two ways that has the timing mark on it. Only way to tell is by putting a small piece of screw driver that is short enough as I did through the front inspection hole under the exhaust manifold to see if the balance is in the right place. Easy to mess up. Would have whoever did it look into it

    i was cruising down an interstate in my 03 eclipse 2.4 and hit a small patch of water at 75pmh. The car got a tad sideways and then it seemed to vibrate a couple times, then it quit. I slowed down to take my exit and maintained a 20mph, and as soon as i came into the straightaway and pushed on the gas, it just died. I pulled over to the shoulder and tried to start it but its cranking a little funny, like a normal car sounds when it wont start but will turn over, at an un even rate. Will I have damaged valves or does that sound like maybe the balance belt, thats down below, knocked out due to the water?. My timing belt is still whole and fully in tact. my engine is still as spotless as it was before it quit running

  • @scannerguy1968

    Damn, hard one. When you mean you looked at the ground do you mean down to the frame and block or at the battery. Sure sounds like a ground issue. Or as you say the ECM is going out. But something should throw a code other than the ground somewhere. I know the crank sensor will throw a code. That is what mine did when the small timing belt broke. It ripped the sensor apart and the motor killed. I had a crank sensor code after that. If you pulled the battery terminals it will reset the codes.

    Question There was a loud screeching sound coming from the water pump / alternator area that only get louder when I accelerator, it was fine for a little while until i turned on the heater, then it started staling like crazy then I had a really hard time turning it on then I just couldn't turn it anymore. I think its the battery or alternator, I original swapped the water pump because it was ceased

  • @scannerguy1968
    @scannerguy1968  11 років тому

    Sounds like the belt squealing from what you wrote. I have Two belts. One runs the power steering and a/c the other runs the alternator and water pump. Crack the front one that runs the a/c and see if it squeals. If not then loosen the back one. But only run it for a bit. Should be able to tell that way what is going out. IF you replaced the water pump then I would say the alternator. The heater motor is drawing a lot of current. I've never seen an alternator seize though but is possible

    i have a 97 mits galant 2.4, and i am in a week going to replace the waterpump and timing belts (timing kit), and my questions is how do i know to replace my hydraulic tensioner? can i just use a vice like you did and stick a nail in it? and how long of a vice ,do i need to buy to fit the length of that hydraulic tensioner? 4 inch 5 inch?vice.and do i need a pulley remover from autozone to remove crankshaft B lower(silent shalft),you said you hit your with a hammer after you loosen the bolts.

  • @scannerguy1968
    @scannerguy1968  11 років тому

    Does it run at all? About the only thing I could think of would be somewhere along the ground. When I got my car someone already ran a new ground wire and left the old one hanging. I hooked it up and wipers acted funny and all kinds of stuff. As far as the top and windows it could be in a switch. I know when you hit the top down the windows all roll down. So must be tied in together somewhere

    Without knowing if it shakes at all RPMs which I am guessing it does I would say that someone did not get the counter balance timing set up right. Same as the balance for the oil pump. Both these have to be timed with the motor as I showed in the vid. As far as loud, does it have the same power as before the breakdown? What had happened to trigger the belt change? These motor are interference motors. If the timing belt breaks during running you can mess up the valves by hitting the piston

    Best way to find out is rule out the coil pack being bad. Swap out one pack for the other. If spark is gone on 1 and 4 then it's the pack. My bad pack had juice coming out of it. I have another vid on here showing the packs. I don't think it's a timing problem though. If the belt broke or crank sensor goes out you will have nothing.

  • @scannerguy1968

    That would be a hard one. I wouldn't I guess. If u do don't work it or let RPM's very high. Don't think it would kill anything if just the balance is off for short drives. Eventually it would rattle something loose or worse yet snap a shaft

      A person could loosen them when the belt is on yet. Or put a ratchet on each bolt and give it a good tap with a hammer to simulate an impact wrench. I believe I did the 2nd.

    From you video did you rotate the crank shaft sprocket to install the balance belt, also you mentioned you rotated the sprocket twice after you installed the balance belt to check the timing marks without having the timing belt on, with this being an interference motor would have that not made the pistons hit the valve's.

    • @tomwrzesinski4999
      @tomwrzesinski4999 10 років тому

      You should try not to ever rotate the crankshaft without the belt on, even if everything is lined up TDC. Top dead center on this car means that piston 1 and 4 its valves are all closed but the exhaust on 2 and intake on 3 are open. If you rotate the crank one full turn the pistons will make contact with your valves and your be looking at a pretty pricey repair. Most guides will tell you that when installing the belt, put the tension pulley against the belt and then rotate the crank with the belt on back 3 teeth counter clockwise then forward back to TDC to put tension on the tension side of the belt. Then release the tension pulley and use the special 2 prong tool Mitsubishi tool to put 30 inch pounds on the belt and tighten the pulley to spec.. This is ok to do but your want the belt on first. If your belt broke or if your not sure if everything is lined up when you took the belt off your going to have to release the lifters under the valve cover before turning the crank in its proper position.

    No, won't crank most of the time, when it does crank, it will drive perfect for 20-30mins but if I cut it off, it won't start and that 1 and 4 cylinder won't get spark, I was thinking the crank angle sensor but I'm pretty sure it would make the check engine light come on so I don't know, what's confusing is that coil is receiving power from the connector, I looked at the ground and even replaced it, I changed the connector and still no change

      Took my wife's car to a shop and they didn't set the oil pump timing. So I tore it apart and ran into a video on here called the gravity trick and it worked. I was like you and couldn't get that bolt off under the manifold. You rotate the oil pump gear twice( or 3) to the mark and once its lined up you can turn it to the left or right and it will pop back lined up with the timing mark because of the counter weight. If it doesn't rotate again but it works.

    • @scannerguy1968
      @scannerguy1968  10 років тому

      I would try to make sure the pump is in the right position as Shawn wrote. If that works would be good. Wouldn't recommend running with bal off. Access is hard but doable from the top.

      thanks both for replys. I ended up getting it. actually took me like 10 tries and every time I would start the engine to make sure, it would shake violently. I would take the belt off and spin the pump a rotation and try again with not much difference. I kept thinking I was screwing up. turns out my friend didn't warn me that the intake has a major vacuum leak making it run very rough. I found that trick and got it back together

      Hey Shawn, I don't think he rotated the crank. I think he was talking about the belt itself. Starting at the 12 o'clock position and working it in and around the crank.
