    Ive always used fast orange handsoap to remove the rest of the ghasket.. just dab a little bit on your finger and firmly rub the leftover ghasket,used shop towel to wipe off residue(do not use water)and your all set.

    QUESTION: Do I have to remove the automatic belt tensioner if I have the belt off already? (It's already been replaced before so I'm not worried). It sounded like that was just your way of removing belt tension.

    If I just needed to replace the water pump do I have to remove all those pulleys regarding the timing belt? Or can I just remove all the pulleys and suchs and replace water pump itself and not need to touch anything to do with the timing belt.

I do have one question, what do you use to clean the gears after you took off the timing belt? I am afraid to use any solvents that could cause the belt to slip.

      Yes, generally replace everything, including water pump to save time in the long run. Kits aren't that expensive. (unless you have good records on the vehicle and know exactly when everything was replaced.)
      A "cheap" repair isn't cheap if you need tyo come back and do it again.

    • @Kingswood7189

      From very recent experience ('03 galant, 2.4l sohc i4), no. You need to remove the belt tensioner cause some of the bolts are located underneath it, but the balancer shaft belt should be okay to leave. It doesn't seem like a big deal honestly as long as you keep all the gears in time, getting the new waterpump is more of a pain than timing itself. Just my $0.02. :)

      @damon323 Рік тому

      @@Kingswood7189Interesting. So I do need to take off the tensioner to get the water pump off? Is there a way of keeping everything in place so it doesn’t move while I put in a new water pump?

    • @Kingswood7189
      @Kingswood7189 Рік тому

      @damon323 yes and yes. I will say in advance, if your mitsu has over 100k miles, I'd highly recommend replacing the timing belts (cause there's actually 2. In a short summary, the easiest way to keep time on the engine is to remove the spark plugs and rotate to top dead center #1 (requires removal of the timing cover). The cam and crank sprocket doesn't move super easy, but the oil pump sprocket (bottom right sprocket) does. Just be careful touching that sprocket. I can go into more detail later, just wanted to respond back. :)
