Arctic Bird Photography ⎸ Snow in the Summer!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 гру 2023
- It is June in Varanger, and up on the tundra, snow still blankets the ground. The weather has made a turn for the worse, but despite snowflakes falling from the sky, the arrival of migrating birds is announced by an orchestra of varied bird songs. In this three-part series, I explore what Varanger has to offer of Arctic specialists. Come behind the scenes of bird photography to join the adventure and see how the trip unfolds!
The species I photograph in this video include red-necked phalarope, dunlin, ruff, common ringed plover, golden plover, red fox, long-tailed skua, white-tailed eagle and long tailed duck.

Your friendly face, stunning untouched locations, soft music, unique photography all make it a pleasure to watch and is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day. Your genuine love of wildlife and photography inspires to get out there and take pictures. It’s refreshing to see young people using their time wisely to create something so beautiful that touches so many. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work!
Wow thank you so much for such kind words! That truly means a lot!
Such a fantastic location, the bright summer plumage really pops against the cooler backgrounds.
It does! Varanger is an amazing place to visit
Continuing to inspire. Beautiful compositions and videos. You have mastered the art of high-key imagery.
I am looking forward to further episodes in this series.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Once again, mind-blowing results from a stunning part of the world (nothing like that here in the UK!). I just love the feel that your high-key images create.
Thank you so much! It is a truly unique part of the world, since you have an Arctic climate, fauna and flora so accessible to the public. But the UK has some truly special wildlife spectacles too!
If you happen to be interested in visiting Varanger, I am planning to do a guided trip there this March! If this sounds interesting to you, send me an email to togj1000@gmail.com (completely non-binding), and I will provide you some more info on what such a trip would consist of.
Love the high key photos. Thanks Tobias.
Cheers! I'm glad you like them!
Beautiful Tobias
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful video mate ! Wish you all the best! 👍👍👍
Cheers! Much appreciated!
@@TobiasGjerde cheers! 🍻
Great stuff Tobias!
Thank you very much!
Happy Holidays Tobias ☃
Happy holidays to you too!
Wow - again - as usual! I love watching your videos and continue to be inspired by them. By the way, you make me cold just watching you lay on the windblown snow! You must have some pretty impressing cold-weather gear! Looking forward to your next video. :)
Thanks so much! Haha, I was not prepared for such cold temperatures 😅 I only brought a cap instead of a proper hat, since I thought June would at least have plus degrees…
@@TobiasGjerde I know what you mean! There are times that I encounter cold weather when photographing birds, and I think of the warm gear hanging in my closet at home!
Fantastic
Thanks a lot!
4:33 Tobias, always great compositions. Thanks for braving those weather conditions and bring back such nice photos.
Thank you so much! The most brutal conditions often result in the most interesting images!
Awesome video
Thank you very much!
Wieder ein ganz tolles Video, Danke fürs zeigen! L.G. aus Österreich und Allzeit Gut Licht!
Thanks a lot!
Hei Tobias !
Dette ser kaldt ut
Så utrolig vakkert !
Klem fra Hendo og Rita
Helt nydelig 9:09
Du har en famtastisk fin forteller stemme by the way
Another wonderful video Tobias! Thousands of Long-tailed ducks overwinter on Lake Ontario here in Canada but the males are in their winter plumage. Although it too is striking, it is nice to see your images of a male in its breeding colours.
Oh wow! That sounds so cool! I would honestly say I prefer their wintering plumage, but I have yet to photograph such a male. And thanks a lot!
Awesome as usual, but so much snow and ice for June! 😳
Haha totally! Thanks!
Fantastic phots. I love your work. I'm looking forward to yuor next video.
Thank you very much!
Just discovered your channel and subscribed! Your narration and enthusiasm really complement the beautiful birds and scenery! Many of these birds are now migrating into my area, and we rarely see them in their breeding plumage. You're fortunate enough to have this experience!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that! And indeed, I was very lucky to be there at the time of their arrival in breeding plumage
Great footage, Tobias. I hope to visit Varanger in May next year. Seeing this video and your beautiful pictures, does want me to go even more.
Thanks so much! It is indeed an incredible place!

Stunning Video Tobias!
Thank you very much Cedric!
Det er så bra dette Tobias, både filming og bilder. Er så imponert! Bare fortsett og grattis med årsjubileet!
Tusen hjertelig takk Sven! Dine ord varmer!
Great photo’s Tobias ❤👍
Thanks a lot!
Jaeger, not Skua. I love you work, don't stop creating!
Thanks a lot! Yes, jaeger is another name for skua, but it’s the same species (Stercorarius longicaudus)
Great footage Tobias! What I found interesting is the Godwit's beak just after minute 1. The Godwit seemed to be able to curl the beak up and then it was straight again. I never saw this. Do you know if this is normal?
Thanks a lot! Yes, this is a unique adaptation in (some?) wading birds. They can curl up the tip of their beak, and I believe this is to easier grip prey in the sand. I’ve seen it with yawning purple sandpipers as well
Once again, amazing photos! I made the same trip in 2022... did you manage to get decent red-throat pipit shots? Because I fehlt like that was the most difficult species to capture!
Thanks a lot! I had very minimal success with the red-throated pipits. I only got a few documentation worthy images
