You can really hear the difference of enthusiasm in Chad's voice when he's doing a Redshift tutorial as opposed to an Octane one ;) Thanks for the intro guys!
I've been working on a project that was grainy as hell and taking an age to render, 30 minutes into this tutorial and all my problems are solved, great job as usual Greyscalegorilla!
I hope to see more in-depth tutorials on Redshift. I love the amount of control you get compared to Octane, but it seems that also makes it significantly more complicated to use.
I don't think it's really more complicated, just a different workflow. For example, for me Redhisft and Arnold are both similar in settings and the way you work with. But i understand what are you saying. In Octane you can achieve a quick (and decent) render in just few clicks. You need more for Arnold and Redshift :)
Fantastic video Chad as always. By the way, look behind your right shoulder. That cream pillow has an amazing pattern to it (pillow in the front). Take it to the studio and scan it. Include it in GSG's next canvas collection! :)
Chad, I'm torn between buying Octane and Redshift. The BIG thing that attracts me to Octane is the way it handles light, especially that gorgeous 'bloom' you can dial up. Does Redshift have similar lighting and similar controls ? can you demo lighting sometime soon? .... big love to GSG
Welp! They added that feature in the latest Redshift version. Bloom, flare, and even streaks. It’s pretty nice but I always end up making these effects in post with better results.
Great vid! Happy to be seeing more RS material out there. Am definitely in need of some node-based texturing tutorials having only ever used C4D materials.
@Chad @Greyscalegorilla thanks for the introduction into #Redshift covering all the basics. As I have won a free licence from a #Maxon #C4D live event earlier this year I am now starting to try it out mainly because I want to fiddle arround with some fog which is quiet slow in #Octane ...
Oh boy, I’ve been waiting for this. I have seen so many videos for REDSHIFT, but I have been waiting for Chad due to the fact GSG are great freaking teachers. (Stop the video take out the trash and wash the dishes, then I will return)
Well done. I hope the second one you did gets put up here. I missed that one. Redshift looks really good but I have to get off my Mac first and on a PC. So that`s even more changes.
I've modelled a shark and rigged it with the cinema 4d character feature which made it easier for me to make the shark move it's fins and tail without keyframes. Then I used the spline tag on the joint master controller to animate the shark on a spline. Everything seems to be moving along in the viewport and when I render without motion blur or the motion vector pass but when I enable motion blur, the shark moves along the spline but shark does not move the tail or find, it's just stiff
I had to stop and look up what AOVs are since you keep saying it without being more specific and quick find turned up nothing in the comments. Arbitrary Output Variables - a.k.a. layers, multi-passes, render elements or channels, etc.
Please. Do a video covering shaders using nodes. Some of us have never used node based rendering coz maybe its a bit confusing buh definitely too powerful due to the immense control. Thanksssssss a bunch.
perfect as I bought Redshift yesterday and now this tut. You’ve rounded my day off nicely Chad. I’ve managed to have a play and dropped an image in the dome light but couldn’t delete it. Is that a bug or am I missing something?
The Redshift lights and materials I add are just black (the auto refresh is on), Nothing is happening in the Renderview screen no matter what I do. I've searched forums and followed tutorial after tutorial but no one seems to have an answer.
Awesome tutorial! So, where I can download the Layout. I also went to the layout library from GSG and the layout doesn't download after I fill the subscribe form.
"Wow that's a crazy, that's a lot of samples like that's way more samples than I've ever had to put in anything in my entire career" Cracked me so much lollol! great tut tho!
Hello. You say that flickering is a thing of the past, but it doesn't seem to be in some cases. Try doing a simple camera animation inside a room (interior design stuff) with a sun and some HDRI and things get really messy. It goes right back to the old VRay inferno of pre-passes, since you have to use irradiance cache and irradiance point cloud, AND without prepasses the flicker is there as always. I can't find one single tutorial on how to get an interior camera animation without flickering with Redshift - that is step by step. The manual goes into prepasses but for some reason Redshift won't save the prepass file - it doesn't write any files - so I can't try this system. Any help? Or for archviz VRay is still "the man"?
Hi, im struggling to work out something. I have the grey scale gorilla beer material and glass simulating beer sloshing around in a mug using redshift. If I copy to a new project it looks fine but in its current scene you can only see the mug not the beer. I have fog environment and hdri's but can't figure out the difference between the scenes that stopping the beer from showing through the transparency of the mug.
Hey, great video! Can you help me explain to me something specific about nodes. When linking a texture to lets say "reflection weight" for example, that the 'weight' parameter freezers and can't be adjusted. This can apply to other connections in nodes. I'm just trying to understand the theory a little bit more. I've been using C4D Redshift for a little while now, thanks.
Helpful tutorial. I am considering using RS, but is there a way to use c4d materials with RS? I do like the idea of the live preview but would like to use existing files that would be prohibitively time-consuming to rebuild materials and textures from scratch ... The renderview seems to render some materials, but not the ones with alpha or normal channels...
Hi Chad ! Great work ! How do you save redshift material with textures tothe content browser ? Is there any workaround ? Redshift cannot read texture files from lib4d files :'(
Awesome stuff Chad, Two Q: how you spell "Mirk Wilson" (I think you say) at 51:50 of the video. I try to find him but I think that my spelling is wrong. And can you share some names from your Redshift names from your learn playlist please? thanks Chand!
its the same thing just named different, its technically suppose to be for using orc which is otoys cloud based rendering program. Never the less it's a fully functioning octane for c4d plugin for $20. It only works though up to 2 gpus.
great tutorial, I have downloaded the demo of Redshift but cannot get it to install. I even went through the short trouble shooting guide on their website, any ideas?
You can use many C4D shaders in RS (including the noises) using the C4D Shader utility node. If you use C4D noise for a bump for example, the tree goes C4D Shader - RS Texture - RS Bump Map - RS Material - Output. RS only has two noise types, so I use the utility pretty regularly.
Sorry for asking but not really familiar with GPU rendering. If you render to final output, so to picture viewer/harddisk. Is this be done by GPU as well or is that the moment where a CPU takes over?
Rlly nice tutoriel, but at the end, I still don't now how to creat good material. I mean u show how make somes metalic, plastic, glass... But when I have a texture, and a normal map, and I wan't to do something in wood... I don't know how to do that
hi I'm a Houdini user for redshift . maybe you can solve this when i put on the ipr for redshift it doesn't load at all and only the render view works and when i put a video render it shows lie error opening the title device >> any possible solution to this dude..
You can really hear the difference of enthusiasm in Chad's voice when he's doing a Redshift tutorial as opposed to an Octane one ;) Thanks for the intro guys!
Thank you guys for putting so much love in to the community
This video made me buy redshift some time ago. One of the best decisions I've made, it's really good.
I've been working on a project that was grainy as hell and taking an age to render, 30 minutes into this tutorial and all my problems are solved, great job as usual Greyscalegorilla!
Thanks for watching!
I hope to see more in-depth tutorials on Redshift. I love the amount of control you get compared to Octane, but it seems that also makes it significantly more complicated to use.

More redshift tutorials please!
Check www.greyscalegorilla.com/live for a schedule of upcoming tutorials. Thanks for watching!
It's November 2020, made the switch from Octane to Redshift. This overview is still relevant and great! Thank you Chad!
Would be great to see an in depth review of the new redshift render settings
Great. Just started using Redshift on my MacPro5,1 from 2012 .... so sweet that it is possible now. Enjoying your tut a lot. Thanks.
We want more Chad Ashley. Can you guys integrate him into Plus tutorials more? His way of teaching is the fucking best!
Fantastic video Chad as always. By the way, look behind your right shoulder. That cream pillow has an amazing pattern to it (pillow in the front). Take it to the studio and scan it. Include it in GSG's next canvas collection! :)
How did you get rid of the watermark? 😂
This is meta
every time I come back to this video I learn something new
Awesome! Thanks for coming back!
Finally )) we miss your tutorials guys, the best always! I learned so much from you guys, God bless you ;)
chady Joseph thanks!!!
Haven't even watched the whole video yet but FOUR 980ti's!!! Damn thats awesome!
Great walk thru. I'm now on the plus team and dipping my toe into r25. You guys are always great and HDRI link is a lifesaver.
That sip of coffee at 23:51 needs to be featured on a Starbucks commercial. Now I want coffee.
ah yes venri gud
Chad, I'm torn between buying Octane and Redshift. The BIG thing that attracts me to Octane is the way it handles light, especially that gorgeous 'bloom' you can dial up. Does Redshift have similar lighting and similar controls ? can you demo lighting sometime soon? .... big love to GSG

Thanks a lot for the efford you did to prepare this tutorial. You guys are the best
NICE! I mean flickering is apparent with the IRPC, it happens easily, but changing to Brute Force as the secondary fixes that 99% of the time :)
Great vid! Happy to be seeing more RS material out there. Am definitely in need of some node-based texturing tutorials having only ever used C4D materials.
Chad's house is cool, because it's where we learn Redshift (and he has skateboards).
Yep! :)
Good introduction! Seems like a good solution.
Red Shift resembles hybrid of Vray and Octane... unified samplig looks like Antialised....
Thanks a lot for the video! I would love to see more Redshift tutorials.
Have you checked out our Guide to Redshift?
What a good introduction to Redshift!!!! very useful!
@Chad @Greyscalegorilla thanks for the introduction into #Redshift covering all the basics. As I have won a free licence from a #Maxon #C4D live event earlier this year I am now starting to try it out mainly because I want to fiddle arround with some fog which is quiet slow in #Octane ...
pixelasm awesome! Have fun!!
Here is another Tutorial on Volumetric Lights with some extra tips: ua-cam.com/video/Z-XQfaeDe94/v-deo.html
Awesome break down. Really appreciate this format. Thank you so much!
i hope to see more tutorials on light emissive materials in redshift as they don't looks so straightforward
This renderer is pretty awesome I want to try it and learn more!
Oh boy, I’ve been waiting for this. I have seen so many videos for REDSHIFT, but I have been waiting for Chad due to the fact GSG are great freaking teachers. (Stop the video take out the trash and wash the dishes, then I will return)
Tony Coffield thanks! More streams and vids soon!
Well done. I hope the second one you did gets put up here. I missed that one. Redshift looks really good but I have to get off my Mac first and on a PC. So that`s even more changes.
No doubt that a RS material kit for c4d from Greyscale would have great success
I am working interiors right now and this really helpful is for me
Thanks Ash!!! :D
Axel Fernando Huezo thanks! More in depth vids coming soon!
Really Like It Bros Please More redshift Tutorials Please!!!!
Hahaha:) Circle of Confusion by Genesis. Love that track.

Holy crap! This looks amazing
You saved my life and my GPU is happy now :D
New to redshift getting a "no devices found" error. Anyone know how to fix that?
Same! DId you ever work out how to fix it?
Hi, nice introduction tutorial! Where I can find that robot please?
Great video :) Keep up the good work !
wow, really learnt something cool today, thanks wish to have more of this.
You're welcome! thanks for watching!
Finally!! Keep 'em coming :)
Mantas Kava thanks! More streams soon!
Thanks Chad for the tutorial. it was very clear. looking forward to more detailed tutorials especially those complicated looking nodes. :D
You're welcome!
Wow , Big Thanks For This Video. i Love Greyscalegorilla .
Thanks for watching!
We miss ur tutorials!!
Ismaeel Williams thanks! I miss them too!!!
More tutorials should include time for sips of coffee.

@cgpov you made me fall in love with Arnold to C4d sadly you left me there
Could you upload the layout that you use to the blog or to the descripcion of the video please? Thanks for the tutorials ;)
Great tutorial !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey thanks for the videos, Is there any way to get the layout you're using?
perfect as I bought Redshift yesterday and now this tut. You’ve rounded my day off nicely Chad. I’ve managed to have a play and dropped an image in the dome light but couldn’t delete it. Is that a bug or am I missing something?
Glyn Dyer hmm not sure what would cause that. Are you using HDRI Link?
Chad Ashley no I don’t have that.
The Redshift lights and materials I add are just black (the auto refresh is on), Nothing is happening in the Renderview screen no matter what I do. I've searched forums and followed tutorial after tutorial but no one seems to have an answer.
Awesome tutorial!

We'll look into it, thanks for watching!
You really good at explaining thank you
Glad it was helpful!
THANK YOU 🥺😔🤟✨
Thanks for watching!
well, I don't have redshift; however I still learn from the video anyways.
if you only learn, i think its no problem to use a pirated version of redshift :)
"Wow that's a crazy, that's a lot of samples like that's way more samples than I've ever had to put in anything in my entire career" Cracked me so much lollol! great tut tho!
Glad you enjoyed it!
this was rad, ashley, please come over and have a beer with me
Jeff Briant, sure! What time?😆😆😆

I'm so close to buy a licence. thank
Finally some great info about Redshift in c4d!
Do you have any idea why HDRI Link doesn’t work when I try to drop the Dome Map on the tag?
Got it, just had to download the latest version.
Thank you so much for the video!, i'm curious about your your pc specs, could you share whit us?, thanks!
Sir! This tutorial was fantastic.. Thank you!!
Thanks!
Come on baby, we want more tutorials !
What are you looking to learn next?
Hi, im struggling to work out something. I have the grey scale gorilla beer material and glass simulating beer sloshing around in a mug using redshift. I have fog environment and hdri's but can't figure out the difference between the scenes that stopping the beer from showing through the transparency of the mug.
Hi Chad. Did you end up eventually sharing your RS C4D layout somewhere?
Yep. Here ya go. greyscalegorilla.com/gsg-layouts/
Rockstar! Less than five hours ago! Much appreciated.
Sir, I have geforce gt710 2gb .
Is redshift work properly?
How to you place the toolbar with all the big red buttons in your workspace? And where do I find it?
Window > Customize commands. Then search "Redshift" and add the icons you want
your materials are so good, do you have a pack for Redshift?
Stay tuned. We are working on a pack just for Redshift! :)
Hey! Is there any tutorials about the dome light backplate feature? I got more interested of it and didnt find how to use it
I believe that Redshift has some videos on their site that would be helpful.
Hi chad, great tut...whats the headphone you have on ?...brand name and model ?...it looks nice
I have the Bose Quiet Comfort 25's
i love your tutorials please make more redshift is unique. I wonder tho can it be setup for team render and use the farm.
Thanks a lot for this!
Thank U very much!
Thanks man.
I have a beefy pc with on GPU gtx970. (128gb Ram i7-5960x) can I compensate graphical loads to RAM and CPU?
Hey, great video! Can you help me explain to me something specific about nodes. I'm just trying to understand the theory a little bit more. I've been using C4D Redshift for a little while now, thanks.
i'm a vray user and when i saw the materials settings i almost had a panic attack :D
It does it's best to handle C4Ds materials, but RS materials are optimal of course.
Me creating material with 7 nodes: that's tough
After 34:54: nevermind
Hi Chad ! Great work ! How do you save redshift material with textures tothe content browser ? Is there any workaround ? Redshift cannot read texture files from lib4d files :'(
creativex12 I'll look into it, thanks for watching!
Thank you
hey i always used octane i just switched to Redshift how do i open up that view port menu to see the actual screen on the side ?
Awesome stuff Chad, Two Q:
how you spell "Mirk Wilson" (I think you say) at 51:50 of the video. I try to find him but I think that my spelling is wrong.
And can you share some names from your Redshift names from your learn playlist please?
thanks Chand!
He goes by Merkvilson. You can check out his stuff here www.patreon.com/merkvilson
Thanks Chad. I saw already the list at the end of the video. Thanks again. Keep rocking
What do you guys think? Should I buy Octane or Redshift?
$20 a month for octane. Its been out for longer, and most studios are already using it.
Thats a tough question. Have you read this article? motionographer.com/2017/08/14/winning-the-render-wars-with-chad-ashley/
No, I haven't yet! Thank you :)
cool all they need to do is to release a $20 a month plan like octane and I'll subscribe.
$20 a month for octane for C4D? Where did you see this? ^^
home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/subscriptions/
it's OctaneVR for CINEMA 4D® not Cinema4D license :)
You will get fully working octane for cinema 4D with that subscription
its the same thing just named different, its technically suppose to be for using orc which is otoys cloud based rendering program. Never the less it's a fully functioning octane for c4d plugin for $20. It only works though up to 2 gpus.
great tutorial, I have downloaded the demo of Redshift but cannot get it to install. I even went through the short trouble shooting guide on their website, any ideas?
Have you tried hitting them up for some help?
Would that be through the forum on the Redshift website?
The Redshift forum is a great place for help.
What do you think about the work of the targeta strix gtx 1060 6gb for redshift?
GI is global illumination.
Does Redshirt run on a Mac computer?
How well does it work with C4D shaders (Layers, Noise, etc)? And different projections (not just UVs)?
Like most 3rd party renderers they have their own shaders and noises. However, they all respect C4D's UV system.
50:32 from my understanding It uses primarily the GPU and the CPU only when needed.
Bossman Chad !!
Rlly nice tutoriel, but at the end, I still don't now how to creat good material. I mean u show how make somes metalic, plastic, glass... But when I have a texture, and a normal map, and I wan't to do something in wood... I don't know how to do that
