Oh my gosh Kristy!!!! I cried as I watched this video. Let me explain why. I felt as if you made this video just for me! I have cheap paint supplies and no confidence in myself to paint. I am very interested in watercolor. I am a beginner who can't draw a straight line to save my life, yet, I want to be creative like you are. I'm so happy I found you! You're giving me inspiration and encouragement to go ahead and begin exploring my watercolors. Thank you so very much for helping me!!!!!!!
You are very welcome! I felt a pull on my soul to make this type of video again. There are so so many who need the reminder or need to be given this kind of permission for the first time. Thank you so much for sharing.
@@KristyRiceyaaaaas!!!!! Again, and again, and again. Even those of us that know we're experienced enough, need all the encouragement we can get, because procrastination comes from all the exterior thoughts. Ie: I'm not good enough. I'll never be like A, B, C... A, B, C is way better than me. So, we put our brakes on, we start to dwindle back, because it's so much easier to procrastinate and let our (negativo) thoughts take control. Meanwhile, everyone else is moving forward. Then, the resentment starts in... I shoulda... I coulda... And you realize in this moment of self talk, I'm the only one holding me back. And it's like Kristy said, you HAVE to keep positive self talking. Because the negative self talk will definitely lead to places ya don't wanna be. Like the nasty gram... That would have sent me to a very bad place. But if I can think positive about a nasty gram, I can look at it as a challenge, a speed bump to be crushed... Away with my road block, heading for another big mistake!!!😂. Whatever.... I'll make it through. Excellent reminder to say kind, loving words to yourself! Always, always, always. Because, it's nobody else's "job", but our own to bring happiness. Although Kristy and many others in this community definitely can still bring us joy!!!❤
Seriously magical Kristy!!!! I’m such a fan now!!! My family is so thrilled that I found you…. A grandma sharing your content with my grandkids!!!! 🎊 THANK YOU FOR THE PERMISSION TO LEARN AT MY OWN PACE!!!
this is such a lovely tutorial in that you're not "teaching" us technique necessarily, but how to just be in the moment and enjoy what the moment brings. that is what art does. art is not "what is the best palette i can buy", art is just being, and sitting with being. the end product might not be the point of art at all, but the joy is.
Hi, Kristy!! My therapist made me do a hobby. I have anxiety disorder, bad PTSD, I have medical problems, so I do not leave the house very often. So, since I painted oils, acrylics and household paint for murals in my past, I chose watercolor because I had heard it was hard but did not need a lot of supplies or time. All you needed was water, paint, brush, paper. I did not have to waste 20minutes setting up my easel, 5 to 30minutes finding a prepped canvas and another 15 setting up my palette. I really appreciate your tutorials because you deal with reality and you don’t let us fall on our excuses. Thank you. Watercolor has changed my outlook and I paint 20 mins a day. I still have all of my medical problems, but they are not so overwhelming any more. Thank ou :)
Please eat some chocolates... do your watercolors and smile...it works for me!....I must agree...she is an incredible teacher with no teacher stress...she flutters like a mesmerizing colorful butterfly!

I was looking to get into watercolors as a hobby but was feeling extremely overwhelmed and anxious about all the options for paints, brushes, and paper. I decided to look up more information about watercolors before ordering a paint set when I came across your channel. Your videos give shy beginners the "permission" to start, thank you!
This conversation was featured among my local urban sketchers group just 2 days ago. Such a joy to simply learn how to get the best out of "what you have" and get on with the joy of art.
You are so awesome 🤗 Watching you makes me realize I am scared. I am using too much water and it takes over the underlying color or I don't use enough and it does not move at all 😟 My dry palet blocks do not become so creamy even after lots of sprayed water on them? I have just started with watercolor and I feel I am doing it all wrong with wet on wet and it is frustrating and confusing to understand how it works so I am watching a ton of videos in hope to learn and understand it. In the mean time loosing the joy of it and then you are here, God bless you 😘 Thank you so much for reminding us to have fun and enjoy. Thank you for being such an inspiration 🙏💖
The joy is painting (using that term lightly) it's more about creating joy. I have even made joy with a tree branch. Yes I have done many with nothing more than a stick (it was sort of a challenge). It all works. Play and enjoy. It makes all the world's woes get pushed out of the forefront and recede. Keep showing us all how to create that joy. Thank you for all you show us.
I'm back to using The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron. Doing the Morning Pages now, and a weekly Artist's Date will now be a daily 20 minute minimum date with my watercolors, my chai chaga tea and I'll get some chocolates! Excellent idea!
Thank you so much, my friend! This was a pleasant surprise! I had no idea you were going to use my sketchbook for your UA-cam video. ❤❤❤ This sketchbook would not have been possible without you and your support!!!
Isnt it funny, all those years of ourvluves being taught to color inside the lines. And here come us watercolor lovers getting joy from color "bumps" 😂❤
Hurray! Your comment about looking at my "mess" and finding something that I love made me clap my hands and laugh ( with joy). There is always SOMETHING like in the mix. ! Big THANKS. ❤️
Exactly what I needed to hear. I just can't get back into the habit. I can't find 45 minutes a day to get out and set up all the watercolor stuff and sit down. Too many other distractions. I'm not giving up.
I consider my self an intermediate watercolorist. But no matter if you're just beginning or a long time pro...I think every artist needs to have some of the "play & fun" watercolors in their stash! Get 'em out and go to town! I've got one of those cake sets. Yes, they're chalky but the colors are pretty and the chalkiness gives them sort of a velvety soft finish that I happen to love! Thanks Kristy!
Watercolor Church member here! Kristy, your video was for me too. I got all your brushes, palette, paper, etc etc etc. But, I haven’t done squat… and I want to.
You can start with swatches! Easy and you will get to know your supplies. And you can just play and experimrment. That is what I do (I am a beginner) and it is FUN. I love gliding a brush over the paper.
I started my journey with watercolour 2 weeks ago.. On beginning I bought craft/ school watercolour palette bc it was all I could find. But recently I order a bit better. Maybe not top pro.. but better than student palette and some watercolour paper.Your videos are very inspirational . First of all I need to say that only you are speaking so loudly about having fun with it. To not to treat it too seriously. To enjoy a moment with a brush in our hands and a paints. Wow, I am surprised at how good the cake-colors looked when soaked. I would have loved to see you paint a flower with the cake-colors on the paper bag!
I find that Cotman doesnt charge (move) well during wet on wet, especially on mediocre paper. That floof of air got me laughing… I think we need a miniature air floof tool in our watercolour brush kit! Hahaha Btw, I tried misting paints but they sometimes splatter. So i chose to use a dropper instead. I keep a little essential oil size bottle of water with dropper cap, to pinch water into the paints. Splatter no more. I started playing with paint using my unused makeup brushes. The flat concealer brush is kinda like a filbert. Only last week did I finally buy a filbert paintbrush 😂
I love your approach -- fun and spiritual. I have a question -- can I use water colors on a gel plate; can I collage with acrylic and water color papers from gell prints and can I use mix media paper?
Awesome video. Thank you. I had given up on watercolor because I felt I’m too much of a control freak!!! I want perfection immediately…..🙄. Anyway…. What brand of paper would you recommend. I have a hard time paying a lot for watercolor paper when I’m not good. Help!! 🥰
Dragon Wiggle, Lift. 😂❤ This was lovely thank you! My takeaway- I take painting way too seriously, it’s time to step back and breathe, relax and allow myself to just play!

Oh what a sweet style video this is. Soothing and spa-like. Aaah…. 😊
As someone who doesn’t have the fear some have I will still say this is a practice, feeling free enough to just paint. I never set out to create a masterpiece I just wanted to put paint on paper. Because it’s enjoyable. No formal art classes. Just hobby goals. I only got a little stuck when I had created a few “masterpieces” and wanted to do more of them. Then I was careful and thoughtful about what came next. To overcome that I just do something. Which often leads to NOT a masterpiece. No worries I just punch hearts out of those and give to students with a message on back that says “you are loved”. But still trying so I may start out playful and if something starts to take shape I slow down and try to create the masterpiece. Slowing down and being thoughtful is sometimes necessary. But if I “mess up” who cares. I can still try again and I have my trusty heart punch.
I really just don’t care. Im having fun. I have stacks of paper and if I don’t feel like attempting a masterpiece but want to paint I paint on scrap or really cheap paper. No worries ever! But it’s been a practice and discipline to get here and stay here. I have a garbage bin right below my desk and it fills every few days. Lol. So what. Who cares. You bought supplies use them and enjoy them and be joyful every time you accidentally make a masterpiece.
So many times I find one in the scraps and I’m like this is gorgeous why did this end up in unfinished scrap pile?? So I put some finishing touches and frame her and up she goes on a wall! JOY 😊🙏🏼✝️🥂

I find that Cotman doesnt charge (move) well during wet on wet, especially on mediocre paper. That floof of air got me laughing… I think we need a miniature air floof tool in our watercolour brush kit! Hahaha
Btw, I tried misting paints but they sometimes splatter.
Makeup brushes are fantastic for painting!!
I am thrilled to have permission to just play with color!!!!!
Wonderful!

Kristy, on your lazy rectangle exercise. Would the colors have bled together a little more if you pre-wet each rectangle section? if that makes sense
Yesssss definitely!! So basically paint a clean water rectangle first, then dab in color :) And repeat!
I love your watercolor cloth. Where did you find that? Looks like your design.

I love your approach -- fun and spiritual. I have a question -- can I use water colors on a gel plate; can I collage with acrylic and water color papers from gell prints and can I use mix media paper?
So I’ve not don’t anything with gel plates yet however I’d say this is a sound mix to supplies for a stellar experiment!
@@KristyRice thanks. Here's to experimentation!
Awesome video. Thank you. I had given up on watercolor because I felt I’m too much of a control freak!!! I want perfection immediately…..🙄. Anyway…. What brand of paper would you recommend. I have a hard time paying a lot for watercolor paper when I’m not good. Help!! 🥰
If you are in the US I like Gencrafts wood pulp (not 100% cotton) paper:) very affordable in the US
Ha ha ha ! #boop 😅 You're so much fun 🌹🌿

This was lovely thank you!
My takeaway- I take painting way too seriously, it’s time to step back and breathe, relax and allow myself to just play!
Can’t think of a better takeaway! 🐲
Thanks Kristy. Having a break through 😅
