I used to paint in High School (I'm 71 years old now) so I've forgotten most everything...but I grab my inexpensive brushes and paints and I try. I am soooo grateful I found your video. Your training is so easy to understand, its slow enough and close enough to see. You are so easy and fun to listen too and give us hope that just maybe we can achieve something beautiful. I subbed so I can begin to binge watch you to catch up. Thank you so much for this beginner training, its perfect for what I was looking for and needed. ❤

FINALLY is right! I am 93 yrs and have doodled with watercolor for about 30 years until my moving to a senior care facility when l really got back into watercolor on my own after an online class. Love your person to person manner of teaching from the very paper and up! Your explanations made every step so very clear! I am so much in love with all aspects of it. I’ve even sketched homes, boats and a family cat that passed. Joy but not perfect. Thank you Kristi😊

You, Kristy, are the bomb. I'm 70 years old and just became a watercoloraholic about a year ago. I had hit a period when I felt like I was no longer improving and was feeling discouraged. I began searching the internet for tutorials. Many thanks to all of the watercolorist who so generously share their experience with all of us newbies. I learned something from all of them. BUT you have been the best "teacher"---bar none.. Your knowledge and your ability to impart it in your very practical, yet quirky way has allowed me to preserver and continue with an art form that I have come to love. Many thinks.

For the love of God, FINALLY! The basic how-to-start steps nobody else seems to understand. Ombre, lifting, flooding, WOWD - I understood the concept, but the how-to I was missing. .. a bit talkie-talkie but good grief, THIS is what people need to learn! 💜

I understand this mentality so well!! Due to childhood trauma and a lot of criticisms coming from family members (when young), I allowed that to determine my life’s misdirection for SO many years!!!
Get back on track and take out several hours A DAY to paint, draw, whatever hits your fancy!!

I can draw pretty basic but I saw all those gorgeous water colour images and figured I would NEVER be able to do ANYTHING like that even though I wished like mad I could. Then watching this video, my heart lifted and I felt like OMG, I CAN do this. I'm so excited to give water colours a try. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have never found a channel and video that I love as much as I love this channel. As a mixed media visual artist with preference for acrylic for a decade, I’ve discovered my true passion in watercolor, ditching the corporate world and pursuing it with extreme dedication. Typically in the morning during my warmup meditation, I’ll watch one of these videos. This channel has transforms my life. I’ve never resonated with anything so strongly in my core. This woman is a brilliant, kind-hearted, passionate, and experienced teacher. I feel like she could be my neighbor or my bestie. As an artist, this channel breathes life into me daily. Especially on the days that I could use a little inspiration and mood boost. ❤🤟🏽

Glad this video showed up somehow. I used to paint decades ago, even took some classes in college and my teachers thought I was good. My mother was the number one critic, thanks to her I stopped painting. Been trying to get myself to start over, but can't get over the woman. I am now 75, nice to see people even older than me are taking the class. Thank you. (I have all kinds of supplies, just couldn't get myself to use them. I even have a studio set up in a cottage located in my backyard, that's how bad the woman affected me.) It's 4:05 AM, will go there once it's daylight.

Go Carmen Go! Go go go!
I have been in a similar position. I found lots of therapy and joining a local artist group like the urban sketchers helped a lot. Urban sketching encourages you to go out and do it, and then post the results afterwards no matter how it turns out.
It helps to see it as being as regular as going to the gym or taking a walk. You wouldn’t be so obsessed over maybe one day using the arm curl machine and doing it one time and expecting the result to be a masterpiece. You go into it knowing you have to do 20 reps and then tomorrow you do 20 more and you just keep going day after day. :)

So cool that you have a studio!
      👏🏼
      A couple things to consider:
"You came *through your mother, not *from her" ~ Reverend Ike
      +
"Critical ppl have the most criticism reserved for themselves" ~ Marisa Peer
All the bad things she said to you, she was actually saying to herself. Did she even know you? Bc the woman who called herself my mother certainly didn't have a clue about me.
I hope you have been painting your ass off since your comment 😁

Plus you give clear explanations along with the beautifully detailed work and your "no fear of mistakes" attitude, which keeps art the game that it should be.

I’m thinking this can be my hobby! I haven’t started as I have just ordered brushes and paper. I will watch this again and make my charts.

@@KristyRice ♥ Awww that is so sweet and thoughtful! Kristy, I think I just wore myself out!
I watched your video twice while waiting for the arrival of my first watercolor paints. I know how to draw a graceful leaf with a pencil.... BUT, with the brush in my hand, it was like my hand had a mind of its own. I remember thinking, "Where are you going?"
For the life of me I couldn't get my hand to do the press, release and twist at the right time and with the correct pressure!
Then I watched as you applied paint and there was such a contrast between your heavily pigmented (even the crayola) paints and what I was able to put on the paper with my #8 Silver brush.
I was forewarned that the WN Cotman's was student grade, but since it was the best I could afford I reminded myself I'm no where near ready to be concerned with artwork for sale, but I didn't expect such a big difference.
Maybe it was because this was the first time the palette was used.. maybe I didn't spray enough water or too much water. *shrugs*
I think I simply wore myself out with so many questions trying to figure out why I couldn't find an encouraging moment. So I watched your other videos on "Mindset" and then took a nap! 😍
I'll bet your so sorry you ever asked!🤣🤣

I've realized I'm only setting myself up for further feelings of frustration if I'm not better prepared with the right brush and the right watercolors before I take any more tutorials.
Having said that. Kristy, I think I need your advice. I took a look at your brush collection on Amazon. Since I already have 2 of the 6 brushes in the collection on Amazon, is it possible to purchase the brushes Ala Carte?
I already have the #2 Round and liner brush. Any thoughts?
Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Kristi, your one hour beginner session was the most helpful at demonstrating the actual techniques in real time. Thank you for sharing your talent. I will be recommending your lessons. And, I will be practicing with the techniques you demonstrated. 🎉

Why is it that so many professors in college teach art in a way that makes it frustrating. Your approach to watercolor is straightforward and honest. I can’t believe it was less than an hour to teach all the basics. The class I took in my 20s was not fun. It was a nightmare. I’m glad UA-cam exists because my love for watercolor started with watching a tutorial. This video needs to be a must watch for everyone.

I just tried watercolor painting for the first time following this tutorial. I wish I could share my results with all of you. My painting looks different than Kristy's, but it's truly a work of art. My painting exceeded my expectations. I have a degree in fine art, so I have some art knowledge, but I have never attempted watercolors especially because my professors acted like it was too challenging to learn in one semester. I can't thank Kristy enough for creating this content! Everything about her attitude helps alleviate my anxiety. If you've ever wanted to try watercolor try this tutorial!!! Start with the chart then have fun with the assignment 🙂 if you don't like how it comes out just do it again. I can't wait to keep painting with all of you! Oh! I painted tiny smiling faces on the flowers for added cuteness 🥰

I just wanted to add a note to say thanks for such a great tutorial. Normally I would just go on to the next video and silently appreciate what I've learnt as I go on my merry way but as I got so much from you I thought I'd write this. I'm what you might call a seasoned artist with various media but I'm trying to teach myself watercolour for the first time. As a medium with its own particular properties it's been somewhat of a learning curve but this tutorial has given me some aha moments and I'm grateful I watched. Your colour mixing both using the multiple dips in different pans and also whilst on the paper is truly wonderful. I use these techniques in acrylics but I thought it would just make mud with w/colour - who knew? As a beginner tutorial I think this is very easy to watch, accessible, packed with tips and what I liked most of all was your enthusiasm as an artist and a teacher- you motivate in the gentlest way. Thank you

Ditto that! I have been a professional 'artist' for decades, but hardly touched water color just for the sheer over (and incorrect), exposure in childhood that I believe turned me away, unfairly, to this medium. I always weirdly assumed oils would be too messy and difficult to work with (although this was my great grandmother's chosen medium), & watercolors were n't pigmented enough and to create anything of any substance would be futile and frustrating. So I stuck with drawing & acrylic painting only. Of course, rarely having taken anything but the occasional college course.
I am so thankful for finding so many traditional and unique skills & trainings, tutorials & demonstrations to bring those of us stuck in our misconceptions- come out among the watercolor flowers and enjoy the fun of art!

I started learning watercolor and drawing a year ago, bought tons of good stuff.... DSmith, casa deo & silver brushes, arches paper. But I'm absolutely horrified to use them because of the pressures of being perfect, no mistakes. Thank you for easing my anxieties. Another thing, I've watched hundreds of hours you tube watercolorusts, including some of yours. But this video right here is so simple yet it is also vitally important... And you explained and displayed it in a way I'll never forget. No one else did this so well. My watercolour game just lept up a level, seriously, because now I can plan my painting and the strokes prior by using my chart.... i won't get stuck trying to figure what to do next. I have so many unfinished good looking paintings that i can now complete using this chart. I could visualize what I wanted to draw, but couldn't figure out how to paint it. It wasn't so much my skill level, but it was this missing ... the knowledge of WOWD. Awesomeness! It's always the best teachers that give you hope in yourself. You're the best . TY 🙏 😊

Ok so I'm only about half way through the video but I HAD to pause it to comment. I subscribed after watching some of your shorts and absolutely falling in love with the way you paint flowers. It's EXACTLY the type of watercolor I wish I could do. But after watching a ton of videos online and attempting to paint a few florals and animals, I became discouraged because literally nothing I did looked like the stuff I saw online. So I stopped painting for a while, just assuming it's not something I'll be able to do no matter how hard I wish for it. Little did I know THIS IS WHAT I WAS MISSING!!!! 😭 Every time I watch one of your videos I get this insatiable urge to paint. You make me feel like, with a little practice, I can do those beautiful florals I crave. Everyone online is like "look how simple this is, just do this, that, and the other thing" and I'm over here about to cry because for me, it wasn't simple. Having someone actually explain these techniques and show how you would use it in an actual painting is a complete lifesaver. You have a subscriber for life. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you thank you thank you!! I see you have a website so it goes without saying that I will be perusing that next ☺️

I loved every moment! I’m self taught and have had some good results as the “ process” just seemed to make sense all at once the minute I saw the pigment touch and spread in the water about 6 years ago. I had wanted to do watercolor for years but had NO IDEA how it worked!
That said, the more I paint the more I realize how much I don’t know! “ work smarter not harder” would definitely apply to me. You made all of this make so much sense and took so much of the “ fear” one can feel working with watercolor away. I’m so glad I found you and this particular video. I am subscribed and will definitely do more work with you! I need some less expensive paper, I only buy Archers and that’s too pricy for practice. However…you make such lovely works of art for us to learn on, it won’t be scrap paper by any means ( I might just want to frame one!) thanks again….your newest fan, Susan.

Hi Kristy: another older artist watching this very educational and fun video. I actually did a watercolor a while back and it was my first so it was like a lake in the middle. I got myyself back together and made it happen. I won a ribbon with it at the local art show so I'm really proud but it was a horrendously hard experience trying to control water. I'm more used to oil and acrylic. Thanks so much for going over the basics for us. I had no idea! Honest to God, I've been painting a thousand years and didn't know much of that. I feel much more competent now with watercolors thanks to you. I really appreciate this video. It's great reading the comments here and realizing so many others are just like me.
