Sailing To The Bahamas! Ep. 24

- WE ARE FINALY SAILING TO THE BAHAMAS!
Wow the past month and a half has been an adventure for sure! After driving across the country from Oregon to Florida with our sailboat and having the worst BAD LUCK in the entire world we are SO READY to get to the Bahamas!
We woke up around 3 A.M. this morning and got ready to cross the Gulf Stream. The crossing was very calm and easy sailing and took us around 12 hrs. to get to Alice Town in The Bahamas. We came across several ships heading North and South with out any problems, except for one. The ship was broadcasting AIS which was helpful until we realized his information was totally wrong! We ended up giving way to the ship to let it pass by us and in the process the boom swung across the boat and the main sheet whip-lashed Kenzie in the arm really hard! The force knocked her phone out of her hands and she said it was like slow motion watching it bounce on the side of the boat twice before landing in the cockpit. Her phone almost went for a swim....oops. Now she has a scar across her left arm that will always remind her of our sailing adventure. We are just glad it wasn't worse than that.
We got to Alice Town and got a slip at Browns Marina. The place was really nice and we couldn't get over how crystal clear the water was. Kenzie's first impression of the Bahamas wasn't that great though. She thought it was a creepy place and was worried we would get attacked if we walked around the town, but realized that the people were nice, it was just a creepy run down town.

After hitting a wall in my life, post divorce and living in a van for 3 years. Videos like this give me a small shimmer of hope of having a dream once again. To sail somewhere. Anywhere. Good luck and safe passage!
Thanks mate! We really appreciate your support and are happy to share our travels with you. Dream big and make it happen!
Its funny. The closer i get to the same adventure. The more i re-watch you're videos small boat cross country. Thank you again
I lived in the Bahamas for a year (on Andros Island) and I never felt unsafe on any of the islands, with the sole exception of being in certain areas of Nassau. Bimini is one of the safest places you can ever visit. I have long dreamed of sailing from Florida to the Bahamas. It is a joy to watch your videos and live your trip along with you. Thanks for uploading these for the rest of us.
Love your video. You guys are helping inspire me to switch from motors to sails. I appreciate your greenness and demonstrating that you can be beginners and still make it to places such as Bahamas. I remember the culture shock when I first started world traveling and it makes you a more informed and enlightened person to see that not everywhere is the same as America. Good luck and I'll look for you on the water.
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us such a great comment! It's refreshing to see that you seem to understand what Kenzie was going through in this video. It's okay to get out of your comfort zone and try new things, even when it's scary at first, because in the end it will most likely be very rewarding in many ways. We really appreciate your support!
Ignore all the ridiculous comments. Most people have the same reaction when they experience a different culture. Normal people know it has nothing to do with hate. It even occurs when I have visitors to the US from third world countries. They are just as freaked out. So please people..... stop making everything about hate and just realize we are all humans. You guys are a joy to watch! I love the authenticity and bravo for being brave enough to show insecurities and mistakes. It gives the rest of us newbies hope. :)
Margie Gandy, thank you for your support! We appreciate your kind words and we're happy to see that you understand what is being shared through our videos. We do read every comment we get and try our best to reply to every single one of them, the best we can, in a timely manner. We hope that by doing so, we are able to show our viewers that we really do appreciate the support. We love being able to connect with people and have loved sharing our experiences with everyone. Unfortunately, as you have seen, we have gotten some negative comments from viewers who don't fully see the bigger picture, and from those who think it's fun to criticize other people. We knew that we would probably get some negative comments, and to be honest some of them really did hurt and have boiled our blood at times, but we have made it a point to treat them as we would any other viewer, and have tried our best to respond in a respectful way while standing up for ourselves. Even though we have been surprised by the amount of negative comments we have gotten, we have been even more blown away by the number of positive and uplifting comments we have received, just like yours! We didn't know so many people would want to watch our videos and we never imagined that anyone would find us to be inspirational. We can't thank you enough for not only watching our videos, but for also taking the time to leave us such an amazing comment! It's people like you who help keep us motivated to keep editing and sharing our story!!! =D Thanks for being a part of our epic sailing adventure and making it all worth it!
Rest in Peace! Both gone but not forgotten
What happened?
They are alive and well, in Oregon or so.
Most realistic sailing channel for small boat coastal Eastern US I have seen, terrific. I have Mack sails too, great choice.
We Love our new mack sails! Thank you so much for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment letting us know!
Awesome adventure guys!!! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for watching and for reaching out to us! We hope to share more in the future too.
Omg you are both so green.
Enjoy your trip
Next stop Caribbean and beyond.
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment!
Just found your channel. I’ve looked through your video list and subscribed. I think you two are very brave. Looking forward to watching your story. Good job guys. I love seeing young people living their dreams.
I work around the world. Your right to be cautious. The world is not always a nice place. Always be aware but don’t let that dissuade you from enjoying new places. Just maintain your wits and make good choices. Better to be overly cautious than under.
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment! We really appreciate your support and look forward to being able to share our sailing adventure with you!
RIP dude.. 😢
Welcome to Caribbean life! Laid back, simple living. Not creepy. ♡

"We have nothing to protect us!" Dude is like what about these guns?!
Ha! Love your channel, I bookmarked your upgrade video to check out your
reviews on stuff. Hope to see you guys sometime!
Hahaha Thanks! We hope to get more videos posted of us reviewing more of the products we used on our boat soon. We appreciate you watching our videos and for leaving us a comment letting us know that you have enjoyed them so far! We still have a lot more to share.
Love your little boat, Alice town very safe, keep an eye out in Nassau if you plan on stopping there. Recommend Palm Cay marina on the NE side unless you anchor, a little pricey but a perfect staging area for the lower Exumas.
Love the video!! I’m planning on sailing from Miami to Bimini👌 Also 12:26 lol 😂
Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment; we really appreciate it! Also fair winds on your crossing.
Thank you so much!! I love watching talks videos and getting tips for sailing ⛵️
We always left Key Biscayne around 9pm and sailed overnight..getting there at first light...the if for some reason you are delayed, you still can make Bimini in daylight.
That's what we did on the way back from West End and we agree that is the best way to do it.
Great Job. Subscribed from video #1. Like all your videos. Fair winds 💕
Thank you so much for subscribing! We really appreciate it!
I have a pearson 26😁
Thank you for watching our videos and for reaching out to us! We love connecting with our viewers. Turtle is 26' as well! Happy sailing and fair winds!
Nice I have a Pearson p30
"WHAT'S THAT?" Lol. Maile and I exactly. We eventually tossed nautical terms and went with plain english. You guys rock.
We get questioned all the time as to why Maile's with an old dog like me.
That's awesome! Kenzie's glad she's not the only one hahaha Thank you so much for watching our videos and for connecting with us. We appreciate you being part of our sailing adventure!
You shouldn't be scared in the bahamas, no one would ever hurt you there! Lol
A little culture shock! It’ll pass! I hope. Lol. Good vid!
Thanks for watching! We appreciate it!
Is that a grounding bar beside the keel?
Love it. Ty
Just found your channel.
Glad you found us! We appreciate you watching and commenting.
Love you guys. I have a 26 foot Sadler called Jigsaw - previous owner circumnavigated with her.
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a great comment! We really appreciate your support. We love being able to connect with our viewers, especially those with similar sized boats! That would be an adventure for sure to circumnavigated on a boat our size. It would be slow, rough, and risky, but doable. Would you go on a long voyage like that?
Yes most definitely -Would like to share the yachting world article with you.
Love this guy !!! Suck it up butter cup your in the REAL WORLD !!!
Thanks man! We really appreciate you watching our videos and being a part of our journey!
I'm well aware of what world that I am living in. The message presented in this video was showing that this experience was something new for me. It WAS different from what I was used to seeing and being around. I DIDN'T know what to expect or how to prepare myself. I shared this part of MY story, because it was honest and very real that I'm sure other people can relate to. To be able to experience new places in the world is a wonderful privilege, that not everyone gets a chance to do in their life, and sometimes people don't go, because they are afraid of the unknown. They are too afraid to take the steps necessary to live their dreams, and end up sitting at home watching other people live their dreams instead. The outcome of our story should be to inspire others to get out of their comfort zones and try new things. I'm sorry if you didn't get that message, maybe keep watching our story to the very end and then see how you feel. Thanks for watching our videos, we still have lots more to share.
Did Kenzie learn to sail somewhat and quickly I hope? I was a little nervous when I heard her have a difficult time finding the jib sheet when you asked her to let it out. Needless to say, if you fell overboard, she'd have a rough time turning the boat around and sailing back to pick you up.
Was the boat hurley 27 or what. Great boat btw
1985 Ericson 26
Safe travels
Thanks =D
Just found ya and want to say yer an inspiration! Good Job!
Welcome to our channel! We went on our sailing adventure to The Bahamas on Turtle back in 2017. Once we got back to the states we started editing our videos and were doing a pretty good job of posting a new video once a week. Eventually life does what it does best and presented us with new opportunities which resulted in us moving to a new place and allowed us both to start new careers. Unfortunately the backside of that means less time for editing and posting videos on a regular basis like we were before. Kenzie is actively working on finishing our Sailing The Bahamas series which she hopes to have done here in the next couple of months. After that we will see what life throws at us next, but we have goals of working hard, saving up money and eventually buying a new boat so we can return to the cruising lifestyle. Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to reach out to us!
thats a beefy wisker pole for a 26ft boat.
Thank you for noticing. LOL it is also used as a mast on our Polynesian style outrigger sailing canoe that I designed and built myself.
great, thanks mon
Thanks for watching!
Yeah... you guys are high...
Im sure of it now!!!
Dude is funny!!!! She is just spaced out
Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to connect with us in the comments.
Wow, that ship was close. Glad is was daylight.
So were we! Thanks for watching our videos :)
Was far enough away. I never got this fear of big ships. The courses clearly didn't cross so all good:)
Pancakes are awesome ! Load me up ! I was wondering did Randall always cook or did you Kenzy ? Who is the better cook ? he he he - Okay no fights. I was curious as to how much insurance cost for your sailboat, with all your gadgets. Also, who has all the editing skills for your videos ? You both put together some awesome footage. On this episode you are sailing with moderate wind 4 knots. So glad you decided not to motor so much like others do. Its that realism I think people want to see and you have stuck with it. CONGRATS ON SUCCEEDING THE BAHAMAS AND KENZY ISNT A 3RD WORLD VIRGIN ANYMORE ! Kenzy says, " we dont have anything to protect us " . Then Randall pulls out the GUNNS ! - Hilarious
Randall does ALL the cooking! No arguments there. He likes a lot of foods that I don't like.
Our monthly Insurance bill for our boat was a reasonable price for us to pay; we went through Geico. When we called to set up the insurance for Turtle, Geico told us they would only cover a certain dollar amount, which was less than what we knew Turtle was worth. (With all the upgrades and what not) We had to explain to them that this boat was similar to what they would consider a "Hot Rod" and that it was worth a lot more, they understood and gave as an agreeable coverage price.
All of the editing for our videos and pictures are done by Kenzie. She is self taught and spends a good portion of her time working on videos and managing our social media platforms. Thanks for watching!
just simply incredible, Thank you :)
Hallo. What type of boat is your boat, please?
Thanx George
1985 Ericson 26
i will be there some day soon but waiting to sell my house....i want to have fun too...lol
Thank you so much for being part of our sailing adventure! We can't wait till you get out there too! Good luck!
What is your boat? We have a Hunter 26 sloop that we will be taking across the same path as you both.
It is a 1985 Ericson 26. We built the swim platform on the back which added to the length; now it is about 28'. It was a great boat for sailing the Bahamas! Thanks for subscribing to our channel and Good luck on your SailingAdventure!
What model n make is turtle?
Turtle is an 1985 Ericson 26
What size boat do you guys have?
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a question. Our boat is a 1985 Ericson 26'
OKAY ... Very proud of you kids, but you are violating one of the cardinal sins of sailing: Sailing with your Fenders out. Those big ugly blue things have an important job, none of which is done underway. Keep your vessel in shipshape and bristol fashion. You don't want to be a part of the FENDERPALOOZA YACHT CLUB. Good luck and have fun.
Hahahaha thanks! Once we got to Florida we were in new waters and were very unfamiliar with the "culture" of the ICW. It was the complete opposite of what we were used to back in Oregon. We have been sailing for over 5 years and don't normally keep our fenders hanging on the side of the boat. At this point of our journey we had bigger, more important and somewhat stressful things to worry about...like crossing the Gulf Stream for our very first time! Lol Thanks for leaving a comment and for watching our videos we really appreciate it!
I sail with my fenders out all the time, just to annoy people who think it somehow matters.
@@robertkelly9543 i would sail dragging my anchor. Just to step it up a notch!
No Creepers allowed...be like walking around D.C.!!
Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment! We really appreciate it!
Did anyone get hurt from that accidental jibe? 😳
LOL nobody got hurt, but Kenzie's phone almost went for a splash in that beautiful blue water! She also got a nice scare across her left arm from the rope, but nothing too serious. You gott'a watch out for those ships in the shipping lanes. They come on ya faster than you think! Thank you so much for watching our videos and for taking the time to reach out to us!
@@SailingTurtle Glad to hear that guys 😊
stow the fenders!

Nice people there! Would love to go sail together!
Thank you so much for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment. We loved sailing in The Bahamas and met some pretty incredible people while there.
Have you gotten used to Black folks yet? Hard to enjoy the islands if you're only used to small town Rocky Mountain demographics. You're safe there than you are in any mid-sized US town. How did the Bahamian's like your shotgun? I thought that was problematic cruising with one.
I am shocked by how many of our viewers have had such a closed mindset about what this video is really about. I’ve already addressed this type of a comment at least 3 times already and I will continue to stand by my previous responses. We have been raised to show respect to other people and their ways of life no matter where they are from. When in a new social setting, we choose to meet the person, not their color. We greet the individual, not their ethnicity. We see them as a human being, a brother or a sister, no different then us.
Just because I grew up in a small town in a “Rocky Mountain Demographic” doesn’t mean it will be hard for me to “enjoy islands”. Everyday, people travel to new place all around the world, specifically to see and experience something different than where they are from, and they don’t have a “Hard time" enjoying their new surroundings. I never once said that I don't like to explore new places or see what life is like in other cultures. Why do you think I'm out here? Why do you think people travel? The message presented in this video was showing that this experience was something new for me. It WAS different from what I was used to seeing and being around. I DIDN'T know what to expect or how to prepare myself. I shared this part of MY story, because it was honest and very real that I'm sure other people can relate to. I'm sorry if you didn't get that message, maybe keep watching our story to the very end and then see how you feel.
As for cruising The Bahamas with firearms aboard your boat, it is perfectly legal as long as you take to proper steps to do so. They will want a full list of each gun (limit of 3) and specific counts of ammunition for each gun. You must be able to securely lock the guns on board and they must remain on board at all times. We took not only a 12 Ga. shot gun, as you probably saw in the video, but also a 357 revolver. We got nothing but pleasant smiles from officials when checking into the Bahamas and never felt any negative vibes. We were very appreciative of the Bahamas for being welcoming to not only us, but also our rights to protect ourselves. The part that could be problematic is coming back into the U.S. with your firearms. There will be paperwork you will need to fill out before you leave the country with your guns, if you want to be able to bring them back in easily.
No offense sir, I was referring to your first mate's reaction to walking around Bimini at night. Sorry to make you defend yourselves, it was an off hand comment during a full evening of arm chair sailing. I'm a fan.
Thank you. We appreciate you saying that. We have enjoyed being able to connect with our viewers and try our best to respond to each comment respectfully. Occasionally we get a few comments that cross a line, mostly from viewers who aren't really following our story, or who don't think that we will actually read it and respond to it. We are not afraid to stand up for ourselves and others when needed. We are happy to share our videos with everyone and we are so glad that you have been enjoying them so far! We still have a lot more to share and are excited to have you along for the journey! Thanks for watching!
Its not racial at all, i was just as nervous in bratislava slovakia as i was on the south side of chicago.
Sketchy is sketchy in my opinion.
Thanks for the chuckles. Great videos !
This is the only video i have seen of you guys...
And, after the first 5 minutes, i have to ask...
Your you high??
Lol just the high and excitement of FINALLY setting sail after the longest most miserable month of driving across the country while towing our sailboat and finding ourselves breaking down, getting stranded, blowing tires etc. You should definitely go check out our road trip videos to fully understand the struggle we went through to get to this point! Hahahaha Thanks for watching!!
This chick is so sheltered lol
Hey Kenzy, relax, no one in Alice Town is out to get you. Suggest you stay at home if you don't like exposure to places that are different from your "nice" neighborhood.
Oh dd, of course Alice Town is a nice place, we made that clear in our video. Great job the video explains by it self
@@SailingTurtle Better to be sorry you did not convey that message, rather than a back-ward apology to dd. Saying that you are sorry that dd didn't get it, neatly puts all the blame on dd and none on you. Starting at 11:13 Kenzy really seems like a clueless, culture-centric, "ugly American". If that is not how you want to appear, perhaps you should edit that part.
There’s no blame on anyone. There really is a greater message in this part of our story that a lot of people can relate to. Again, we are sorry if that message isn't understood even after trying to explain it in detail in the comment section of this video. It can be hard to know by reading a comment, vs. listening to a comment how it was meant to come across and sometimes we have to make a judgement call, just as we expect our viewers to do in return. We are willing to stand up for ourselves when needed, but never respond to comments with the intent of trying to stir up contention, but rather connect with and have conversations with our viewers. In this video, I was willing to share my lack of understanding and fear of the unknown. To some people I might come across as "stuck up, selfish, clueless, an ugly American, etc.” and I don’t deny that. You can call it whatever you want. I didn’t edit out those parts on purpose, because I was willing to share with people an honest and real experience of something that WAS different and scary for me. Starting at 11:13 the look on my face was of fear of walking around in a strange place after dark. A fear of getting lost. A fear of getting run over by passing vehicles in narrow streets. A fear of bumping into the wrong person. Those kinds of fears would be the exact same no matter where I am in the world, yes, even in some parts of America. It’s okay to be cautious of your surrounding and it’s natural to want to feel safe. At the same time, the greater message is that its okay to get our of your comfort zone and try new things even if it seems scary and different at first, just as it was for me. If someone were to continue watching the rest of our story they would be able to see that I got over my fears of the unknown and ended up having a good experience while visiting this new place. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@SailingTurtle OK I get your point of view after reading your explanation but you shouldn't be surprise that some people will be offended by the point of view that you presented. The video was really great up until the point where the people of Bimini were presented as people to be afraid of. Maybe I misunderstood and overreacted, and maybe you could have explained your position a little better at the end of the video. I don't know. Hope you enjoy your sailing.
