FUN FACT: This is such an important and iconic track that it is archived in the America's National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress back in 2016, and was the first heavy metal to be entered into that archive.
@dropbarracuda Not to take away from your point, but I wonder why the National Recording Registry is so selective? As a “national recording registry,” one would think the goal is to preserve the history of a wide range of music recordings - not every single one, obviously, but only registering the songs considered iconic seems really limited, don’t you think? But I’m probably missing something. Sorry if this is too off topic. I was just wondering about it….
the song is the story of the 3 stages of addiction. The buildup, the excitement of getting the drugs initial euphoric feeling. The middle part of the song is the high itself, beautiful melodies that put you in your feelings. The need for more. The end of the song is the downfall and the collapse that happens when you withdraw or have no more drugs and how the drugs literally become the most important thing. you continue to chase that middle part of the song. The way this song is structured and put together is nothing shy of a masterpiece.
I would add that the 1st and 2nd part is from the drugp point of view, the bridge is the High and hangover and the final part is the ultimate high and death. In the studio version you can get it clearer. It's an amazing story telling.
To me the song is in 4 parts. the drug is screaming at the addict and the addict gives in That is where you see the song slow down and that is the euphoria After that you have the addict screening back at the master But he only gets to scream back for a short time and then the master takes over and Screams back at the addict "the puppet"
The songs verses are written about drug addiction from first person perspective of the drug itself. The drug itself is telling you just how powerless you are against it. Then, the part that goes "Master, Master where are all the dreams I've been after, you've promised only lies...etc." is from the perspective of the addict. Truly a genius creative concept.
This video is from the movie they did called "Through The Never" (which is also a name of one of their songs). It is a movie that is of a couple of their concerts that were edited together with extra stuff added in. This song is LEGENDARY; not just in their catalog but in heavy metal / rock genre overall. There is not "official" music video for his song as it was on an album that predates them doing music videos. So don't let the "movie" cut of this song lure you away from lyrical meaning of the song. It's overall about drug / substance abuse. Reference the line: "Chop your breakfast on a mirror". Drugs are the 'master' and you are the 'puppet'...
The concert was done in Vancover Canada 🇨🇦 It was filmed in one night at Rodgers Arena.I was there and for thier two rehearsal concerts in Edmonton Alberta!
I was a Metallica kid right from the start - Master of Puppets is probably their best album ever. This song is the seminal one people who love Metallica will always mention first..... Their arrangements and lyrics are really really great. Nothing like putting the Master of Puppets album on and blasting your eardrums at eleven..! (If you watched Stranger Things, you'll know this very recently)
Excuse me? Metal is satanic? According to whom? There are several metal bands that perform Christian music. Stryper and Scandinavian Metal Praise are just a couple that jump to mind. 🤔🧐

You really should react to Metallica from their actual prime, between 1984-1994, I guess reactors choose newer concerts because the video quality is better, but the energy and performances of the old concerts are on a completely different level, it's like watching a totally different band.
As I'm watching this, smoking a joint, the buzz is kickin' in as the euphoric guitar kicks in, I felt I lived another layer of the song in real time. The journey is so layered by the structure and tone. It's one of the best songs ever written.
They are amazing live still to this day! I’ve seen them live at least half a dozen times over the years. First time was in 1986 and latest was 2018. Their song whiplash from their first album has a line that says “ we’ll never stop. We’ll never quit cuz we’re Metallica”. They haven’t yet! James is a master at writing lyrics. They are usually deeply personal to James but vague enough for the listener to interpret unto themselves.
Kill’em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets all had incredible impact from Cliff Burton the original bassist, who was classically trained and brought an orchestral feel and approach to Metallica. A lot of their early stuff are like books, each song a beginning middle and end. Check out For Whom the Bell Tolls and Fade to Black off the Ride the Lightning album! You won’t regret it! Love what yall do, I just found you a couple weeks ago and your rock/metal reactions are epic and wonderful rolled into one. Keep it up, as a fellow 40 y/o yall hit close to the heart!

It's such a deep song taking you through the stages of addiction and depending on what that vice might be leaves it open for the listener to relate. Appreciate you guys giving a shout out to them for allowing reaction videos. Because people that grew up listening to deep metal and rock songs love seeing people's first reactions to songs. It's amazing to see people's first reactions to powerful songs once the meaning clicks for them, whatever that meaning may be.
I DID! actually saw the " damage Inc tour " ( puppets album ) in Edmonton at the convention center, maybe 1500 people at most. Creeping death was cool, red lights and everybody screaming die. Saw black album too, took my wife ( no drinks or drugs ) had great seats middle of section and a section away and she doesn't remember it! How can you not remember the snake pit!
I am danish, same as the drummer Lars Ulrich. I have seen them live 6 times and next year I am going to their double concert. Two concerts, two days in a row. They won't play the same track twice! Can't wait!
I recommend checking out a 3 sister rock band from Mexico, they love Metallica & have an incredibly infectious energy. Their original music is also fantastic, anything from “Live at Teatro Metropólitan (CDMX)” will showcase their current live wall of sound.
Metallica has talked about seeing their friends in other bands just destroying themselves with drug addiction. They famously called it “what not to do”. Ironically, alcohol almost did that to Metallica on numerous occasions. This song hits home for James.
If you gonna do more Metallica take a preformance from live in Seattle 89, like the tracks Battery or Whiplash when they where in their prime is next level stuff.
I think all the views to reactions to old school Metallica and such is our generation looking for validation. We knew it was awesome music and were looked down on or shunned for listening to it... and now we get to sort of relive the excitement of someone hearing it for the first time and understanding why we loved it so much.
I did high school from 88-91, in Metallica's heyday. I love them now maybe more than I did then and a big part of that comes from watching people discover them for the first time. They are beautiful! So are you! Thanks for doing this
My friends who are a tribute to Metallica (Damage Inc) are currently touring with Metallica. They play the off nights that Metallica doesn't play. Example; Metallica plays Friday night, Damage Inc plays Saturday night, Metallica plays Sunday night then off to the next city. My friends have also been able to sit at Lars drum kit, hold their guitars, etc. They are playing on the exact same stage just not at the same time.
I definitely recommend seeing the Master Of Puppets live show they did in 2019 in Manchester, England. It was pouring rain. Poor Lars on the drums was drenched. XD

Saw them live in Singapore in 2018 i think. They hardly come to this side of the world but when they did, they brought all the staple songs w em. And when they play this song, everyone went off!!! It was the best concert ive ever been to. Mad
It can be argued that this song, and actually the album of the same name its from, is widely considered to be the pinnacle of metal achievement. Every great metal album will at some point inevitably be compared to it in some context.
You need to react to Iron Madien. You can gethistory lessons with songs like The Trooper, Alexander The Great, Run to the Hills, Aces Higher. There is also great writing in songs like Hallowed Be Thy Name, Fear of the Dark, Ces High, Phantom of the Oprea. You will greatly appreciate the writing and showmanship. Not to mention the lead singer( Bruce Dickinson's) voice.
This was shot in Edmonton, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia. And is from their movie “Through the Never” which was like a very cool side story intertwined with a Metallica concert, very unique concept, I enjoyed the movie
I was at this tour on the floor. in Vancouver. I was so close Kirk Hammett sweat on me during Ride the lightning. it was so nuts. Metallica doesn't come to Canada often so when they do its always nuts. This concert was among my top all time, only topped by some sentimental concerts.
This is one of the best metal albums of all time!! Master came out in 1986. 1986 was probably the best year for thrash metal. 4 of the beat albums came out that year! The secret behind master of puppets was cliff burton!! Great reaction!!
The song is literally about hard drug addiction. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror."? Cocaine, brother... And then "Needlework the way, never you betray..." possibly a referencen to Heroine there. But no man, this song in 2024 is 38 years old. Released in 1986 on the album "Master of Puppets" became one of Metallica's signature Hits. For a great cover of this song, check out LILIAC's cover from March 2021, the 35th anniversary of the album. But here's the catch, the vocalist is a young lady, only 21-ish at the time, but with the pipes to pull it off.
I love your vids! I am a metal head through and through, and I notice you spend alot of time on the lyrics. Metal heads feel the music more than the lyrics.
If the opportunity arises, go and see Metallica. I have seen over 1,000 concerts in my life, and I can honestly say there is NOTHING quite like a Metallica concert. I saw them play Woodstock 1994 and they do a song where the crowd starts chanting “Die! Die!” (The song is Creeping Death) and being in the middle of a crowd of 300,000 people chanting that was something I could never forget, even if I wanted to. I live all music, and seeing musicians, nothing is like a Metallica show.
For those of us that love and play metal, we love sharing the music with people. For most of us, our music wasnt something we could share without some form of judgement. Thanks guys. Its refreshing to see dudes who dont usually listen to this stuff go into this with an open mind. Much love - Frank -
1st time i saw metallica i was 17 master of puppets tour. Metal church opened. Im 53 now. Seen them 10 times live. This concert was so good. The last song before encore the pillars on the stage collapses a guy swinging 40 feet above stage on fire. There were flames shooting up from the stage. Im pretty sure it was all staged. About 10 minutes after everything settle down we didn't jnowbwhat the fuck just happened. They came out and played 3 more songs using arena speakers. Epic concert. I think godsmack or avenged sevenfold opened. Ya bro you missed out early on there stage production was massive. Have a huge statue of liberty on stage then it collapses on stage. the pyrotechnics of the song one at the beginning of it sic
"Chop your breakfast on a mirror" hint, hint... This song brings me back, thank you for this!! I miss going to the old rock nightclubs of the 80's & early 90's with the mosh pits. There were so many here on Long Island back then. Today there are absolutely none, like they were back then. Although, at pushing the age of 60, the last place I need to be is a mosh pit, lol. Although, I miss that era & music so much. Watching you Head Bang to this, is comical, and reminiscent at the same time, lol.
Great reaction! Funny tidbit about this song and the character of the band, I know a young lady who plays the bagpipes and does a cover of this on the pipes, some AH gave her sh.. on the tik tak tok about how bagpipes have no place doesn’t belong in Metallica and Jim wouldn’t approve and the band chimed in to her defense and thought it was awesome!! Totally cool! Guys of this caliber standing up for a small artist. Speaks volumes to their character. (Actually a similar thing happened with a Charlie Daniel’s song lol)
P Metallica is so cool , they put concert video's , Full Show Videos all through out their Tours !!!! So that life long Metallica fans like me that are disabled can see them . I have been a fan since 1986 !!!
This song had a huge resurgence in 2022 due to its appearance in Stranger Things Season 4 Finale, bringing it to younger audiences. The actor that played Eddie in the show did actually play the song - there are videos of him jamming with the band.
Just saw them my 5th and 6th time in Detroit. If you want a true reaction, go see them live. They don't disappoint and are very welcoming to new fans. Of all concerts I've been to, Metallica is by far the best.
This song is the title track of their 3rd album from 1986. No "official" music video from that far back. However there are a ton of official live concert reeleases that feature this song. Overall the album is about manipulation. Drugs, anger, government, religion etc. The crosses most closely relate to Disposable Heroes which is track 5 about govt sacrificing soldiers.
James writes a lot of things based on his experiences. I believe this song is written about Kirk (guitarist) and his addiction to coke. The master is the drug and addiction, “twisting your mind and smashing your dreams, blinded by me you can’t see a thing” and then the other line “come crawling faster, obey your master, your life burns faster, obey your master” As they have gotten older, James has talked about suicide, addiction, abuse, religion, upbringings, and even his own struggles and his band mates. He’s been in and out of rehab many times, but today he’s in a great place getting even more help and spreading the awareness of mental health and so much more Their new album 72 Seasons has some INSANE tracks!! Powerful and just really deep hitting lyrics, keep going down the rabbit hole This video was from the movie Through The Never, this is not their official video.
I believe One was their first ever video for MTV as Justice For All was their first dip into the mainstream so songs from their earlier albums were all word of mouth. So no radio or video for songs on albums like Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning or Kill Them All. These all had bassist Cliff Burton and for me were their best stuff.
Bad ass song fuck yeah love when you break down some metal gods . Ride the lightning, justice for all or fight fire with fire are all amazing songs that would be dope ass break downs . Don & Black Pegasus 🐐🐐🐐of podcast 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
This album came out in 85 or 86. It is so good that it was the first metal album placed in the library of congress for its musical and cultural significance!!!
its not just the lyricism and musicianship - think of it from an composition perspective. The song is about drugs, but they take you on a riot at first about that rush, then a lull where the languid sound is the high and ecstacy of satiating your fix "Fix Me!" Then it slowly starts to build back up as the addiction is kicking in, and the high is coming down, and the cravings start until its rampant with kinetic energy and aggression is full force when the addiction is ruling you.
Guys this is off the album of the same name that came out in the 80s and it's one of the best metal albums of all time! This is absolutely not a new song, but they are amazing Live and I've seen them several times since the late 90s. Absolutely check out Slayer albums South of Heaven and Seasons. Beyond imagination how talented they are.
Another fun fact. They are one of only few bands that played shows on all continents including Antarctica. More Metallica please. Cannot overdose classics.. Great reaction.❤😊
if you notice the guitar solo is representing the euphoria of the high and as you are coming down the beat gets more intense like the desperate need for your next fix of your chosen drug what I got from it in the 80s
Hi BP, Don...another masterpiece from Metallica. Its awesome rocking with FUQBOYZ, seeing BP goin' crazy and Don mesmerised. Metallica performances live, the best!!...Peace🤙☝️😌
Listen to the fan favorite Orion (play the album track) which is an instrumental. Something unheard of at the time and showed their classical influences. Highly praised song in the world of metal. Truly amazing song.
Two more great tracks about war by Metallica: "Blackened" and "Disposable Heroes" Both are in my top5 by them. No videos; just check out the lyric videos. Most new fans love the song "Fade To Black" it's one of their most universally loved songs. Again - just a lyric video. But that one is very profound and deep - helped a lot of people get through some ish.

Metallica Through the Never

Thanks for this, I was wondering what it was from. Going to have to search that out now.
I turned my husband of 70 years onto Metallica and now he rocks on it all the time...
This was shot in Edmonton, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia. And is from their movie “Through the Never” which was like a very cool side story intertwined with a Metallica concert, very unique concept, I enjoyed the movie
More Metallica more metal!!!!!!!!!! I'm a 46 yr mom and I love Rock, metal and Death CORE METAL!
First time I saw Metallica was in 1987. Always react to live performances. They are awesome live. Four leaf clover live is another great one.
This part is from the metallica movie ,,trough the never ,,(2013)
It's about cocaine...the one line says " chop your breakfast on a mirror"
You got me rockin out in the middle of the day! Love Metallica
One of the best band ever!!!! Metallica 🤘🏻
I was actually at one of the concerts they filmed at for their movie! Edmonton AB. It was my first time seeing them and it was awesome haha
I was at that Edmonton concert in 2012 as well. Seen them 5 times in Edmonton and twice in Saskatoon over the last 30 years.
It's funny the they're not sticklers on the copyright considering their history with Napster...
Much love

Saw Metallica play at Download last year ....amazing. their music could be heard 15 miles away 🤘🤘 Would recommend seeing them live
Thank you very much for your interesting reaction and your conversation, which shows us fans completely new areas. Thanks gentlemen
The Master of Puppets album is stored in the Library of Congress as an important piece music history.
The imagery is from their album covers “Master of Puppets” and “ “Justice for All”. This released in 1986. Their 1st video was “One” in 1989
"Chop your breakfast on a mirror" hint, hint...
Great reaction, love a bit of Metallica 🙏🦉❤️🐊👍
We saw them for the 40th anniversary show. It was amazing.
I have been a fan since 1986 !!!
great reaction this video was taken from the movie that metallica released in 2013 called Through the Never
This song had a huge resurgence in 2022 due to its appearance in Stranger Things Season 4 Finale, bringing it to younger audiences.
The master is the drug and addiction, “twisting your mind and smashing your dreams, blinded by me you can’t see a thing” and then the other line “come crawling faster, obey your master, your life burns faster, obey your master”
As they have gotten older, James has talked about suicide, addiction, abuse, religion, upbringings, and even his own struggles and his band mates. He’s been in and out of rehab many times, but today he’s in a great place getting even more help and spreading the awareness of mental health and so much more
Their new album 72 Seasons has some INSANE tracks!! Powerful and just really deep hitting lyrics, keep going down the rabbit hole
This video was from the movie Through The Never, this is not their official video.
I was in the crowd for the taping of this! Vancouver, Canada
James was spitting bars on this song and this whole album. 🔥
My favorite song of theirs. 3 album 1983 with Cliff Burton on bass before he died in buss crash.
This video footage is from the 2013 Metallica Movie called Metallica: Through the Never
I believe One was their first ever video for MTV as Justice For All was their first dip into the mainstream so songs from their earlier albums were all word of mouth. So no radio or video for songs on albums like Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning or Kill Them All.
These all had bassist Cliff Burton and for me were their best stuff.
Love that your buddy said, ‘rage for the machine,’ because that’s exactly what they’ve become.
Disposable Heroes is in my opnion one of their best ever songs, with a good message, and insane skill on their instruments
This album came out in 85 or 86. It is so good that it was the first metal album placed in the library of congress for its musical and cultural significance!!!
its not just the lyricism and musicianship - think of it from an composition perspective.
The song is about drugs, but they take you on a riot at first about that rush, then a lull where the languid sound is the high and ecstacy of satiating your fix "Fix Me!"
Then it slowly starts to build back up as the addiction is kicking in, and the high is coming down, and the cravings start until its rampant with kinetic energy and aggression is full force when the addiction is ruling you.
You guys definitely need to get into Avenged Sevenfold. “The Stage”, “Hail to the King” “ a little piece of heaven”
I got this DVD at home , greeting from Berlin ( Germany )
if you notice the guitar solo is representing the euphoria of the high and as you are coming down the beat gets more intense like the desperate need for your next fix of your chosen drug what I got from it in the 80s
Two more great tracks about war by Metallica: "Blackened" and "Disposable Heroes"
Both are in my top5 by them. No videos; just check out the lyric videos.
Most new fans love the song "Fade To Black" it's one of their most universally loved songs. Again - just a lyric video. But that one is very profound and deep - helped a lot of people get through some ish.
