The 92 Manual does say to put the shims/top hat spacer on the sprocket pulley side or can cause some braking lock up issues. Idk how serious or not serious that is because if you have dual disk up front you’ll have to put it on the brake side lol. Thank you for filming this
Thanks for the vid, I'm about to do this on my '88 Softail. H-D bible for my particular year bike says to grease bearing before checking end play though.
So I have a 1986 Fxr and it currently has a 40 spoke rim in the front and a fatboy rim in the back. I just bought a set of 9 spoke cast rims that I’m going to put on soon and from what u said, it uses different sleeves. Is that correct?
The new rims I bought came with all the internals and a few shims. I’m going to put new rotors and a new pulley and I’m wondering if I have to put a spacer between the rim and rotor or rim and pulley or can I just mount them directly to the rim?
@@freebirdsgarage got another question. So my Fxr came with 41mm wide glide forks and I bought some 9 spoke mag wheels 19” front, 16” rear and I’m wondering if I can actually mount them or should I just put 35 or 39mm narrow glide forks on my Fxr so I won’t have any issues?
@@eltacuachi4205 you’ll have same the amount of play for shimming with wide glide for the bearings. Make sure the axel is 3/4 other wise you will have issues. Over all handing will be better on the narrow glide. Night and day differences
Are you supposed to include the "top hat" spacer on both bearings when checking the end play? I didnt see that spacer when you dropped the wheel on the axle.
If bearing and race are suppose to line up properly how do you justify putting high-hat spacer and shims on inside then bearing? You are now moving bearing and race apart and the no longer sit firmly together. Shouldn't spacer and shims be on outside to maintain bearing race alignment
It's what the service manual states for Harley FXR's 91-93. Earlier year's for the FXR, have a different spacer in between without a top-spacer. My guess is Harley saw pre-mature ware on the washer having full contact against the bearing. The top hat spacer rides perfectly on the inside of the bearing.
Sorry .. didnt catch the most important move ..at the end ..you were puching or pulling something..said thats it..🤔🤔🤔No idea what were doing st the end..Pushing or Pulling something
Man you’re a bundle of knowledge. I agree it does look better than a spoked wheel. I have spokes on my dyna I wish I had mags
I appreciate that Greg! 👊 I bet there's mag set at every swap meet in California lol
As always good info and a good job showing the how to! I ain't tackling these jobs!
My man I appreciate that! I'm trying to turn this Harley Davidson FXR service Manuel into virtual reality lol
Great job as always! 🤘🏻
Thank you brotha!
Thanks for sharing the knowledge!! Looks better than that spoked wheel!
I appreciate you watching!! The mag wheel just makes the FXR

Always stick to service manual, mine refers to 91-92 FXR. I know prior years are different with spacing so that's probably why they want that done.
So race was not installed on the top side doing this procedure?
Correct, the race was still in good condition there was no need to replace
Thanks!
WOW! Thank you! Helps me want to push harder for the next

Correct, if you are transferring the spoked internals over to the cast they will defiantly have different sleeves.
@@freebirdsgarage Thanks!!
@@freebirdsgarage also, where can I buy those shims and tophat?

Those don't have any spacers. The only shimming or spacing will be in the hub
@@freebirdsgarage thank you for taking the time to answer the questions I have! Really appreciate it!!

So the top hat washer goes towards the bearing and flat washe under top hat?
yes, in that order
Works

The set up is the same, you can swap to the other bearing and check that one too. But both should be the same if you got them new

Were you referring how to test the end play once in the jig?
