It's so good that you mention your mistakes so that others lose their fear and start working. Usually, some people say we have always been professional.
It’s a good idea to check inlet and outlet gas pressures at the same time. I had a situation where pressure was showing good when the gas valve is closed and when energized the inlet pressure drops to 0 lWC. The pressure regulator at the meter had failed.
Had the same issue last week, inlet standing pressure of 8-9”w.c. to a 2 stage gas valve and upon ignition it dropped down to 2.15” w.c., customer was informed to call her gas company. I gotta go back tomorrow to check out the pressure after they assessed and said everything is good on there end
Little trick for checking the orifices, use a peice of thermostat wire and bend a 90 and push in through them all ...works for me.. Plus I will use a working gas valve on my truck to verify board..plug the wires on the new and checked system operation..its quick and easy..
Also, you can put an amp meter around the gas valve wire. If the coil is bad, it will read high amps. I just had a similar issue on a residential furnace and it wasn’t blowing the low voltage fuse. It drew 3 amps for less than a second.
New hvac tech here..Thanks for the vid.. I was having this exact same problem today with a trans Furnace. After troubleshooting it was also the gas valve.
You did a great job changing that gas valve but one thing probably people will be a little concerned about was all gas valve come usually set for natural gas and you didn’t mention that though probably out like that it was probably LOP gas the way the pressure was shit so Just a little tidbit so hope you see it. My name is Fred from Tallahassee.
Tip, whenever replacing a gas valve or a furnace, always squirrel away the service caps off the old valve. They come in handy if you drop one and can't find it
Hey Tad good video, obviously you were pretty sure it was a gas valve but once you put a screw through the outlet port you had no choice but to change it after that. Before you put the screw in it I thought you were going to put a lighter to the orifice at the burner tube to confirm there was no gas coming out
More pro tips.. Test voltage to gas valve while wires are connected to it/ under load. Never touch/ move on/off switch on them, ohm check to see if open or shorted.
Hey what’s up man young hvac tech here 2 years in now ! Check this had to change my first gas value about 2 weeks ago had the same gas value I was getting the 24 Volts when it opened then it would blow the fuse everytime also the rats ate most of the thermostat wire in the attic as well i replaced all that and put a new gas value and the customer is still up and going .
Yea I have never seen 250 V going to a hot surface igniter either but hey, sometimes you get that little weird gremlin that makes you scratch your head like.. wth? haha
Beware of Trane RTOM (Reliatel Options Module) alarms that will fail heat, or lock it out completely because of board corrosion. Real pain in the butt to figure out. Great channel. Keep it up. 👍🏻
I spent hours troubleshooting a gas valve on a commercial building that wasn't igniting the pilot light. I was getting less than 1" w.c. out of the pilot opening. I was adjusting it and couldn't get it higher. I saw a trane unit working in heat mode down the roof on the same piping so I ASSUMED inlet pressure was good. I went downstairs and noticed the water heater was on a soft lockout... Needless to say, I spent too much time looking for an issue past the gas valve when the main regulator failed and the whole system had only 1" w.c. feeding the entire place... Point being, don't overlook the basics and check inlet pressures also.
You should've added when putting cap back on adjustment screw to just put on snug and not over torqued for no good reason . Many times I've had to replace gas valves because there was no way to get the cap off as that brass cap was all mangled with people using the wrong sized slot screwdriver
Once you screw a hole through the tap you have to replace the valve anyway, kind of a joke! And the homeowner will be pretty pissed! Never in 20 yrs Have I ever heard anyone say to do something so stupid! Just get some tstat wire and jump Common and R 24v straight to the valve, if the fuse pops the coil is shorted, if it sprays gas then your board is bad. Works for me every time. This is just some BS.
Question im interested on lean more about a/c on you video I ear 👂 $20 cost for those lección when try join UA-cam say $1.99 for subscription I just need make sure with $1:99 every month I can have access to watch all those videos or how works..thanks 👍 have nice weekend
Take a pipe cleaner bend it into the shape of a check mark. Put it in the orfice and pull out the web. You owe me me a cup of coffee if our paths ever meet

Best gas valve troubleshooting video I have seen so far, thank you.
You're welcome, my brother.Thank you so much for your compliments
Good stuff man, guys like you make UA-cam the best place for DIY, God bless you.
Gracias Ted for sharing your knowledge I’m sure it helps us as a rookie tec
We all rookie even if we have thirty years of experience 👍👍👍👍👍
You’re the best, thank you for helping so many young tehnicians
God bless you Taddy😊

Wow, thank you. I realized I left that out.I should have done that in the video.Thank you for this
@ thanks for all the content.
@ia3598 you're welcome my brother
By high amps, do you mean anything higher than 3-5 amps?
Never seen any failed 24 volt part on the furnace blow the fuse.
Great teacher, and thanks for sharing explosive story, glad it didn’t scare you away from being a great technician
You always have great instructional videos! Thank you!

A trans furnace??

Post op or pre op is the real question

Great stuff as always
Thank you, I appreciate you watching!
Great video very informative thanks
Been watching from Mobile, Al for a while, I appreciate all you do.

That's a great point, I should've demonstrated that in the video!
Thank you Tadd
I am a fan mr T! Color me surprised you do not have extraction tips/sets to try to dig in and back that gas plug out
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind next time!
@TaddyDigest =b a tip from the keyboard, you're to kind to us fans. You did it great, man, plus your call your way. I'll be trying your way one day!

Here lately I've replaced one 2 stage valve and 2 1 stage gas valves. One rooftop two 26 yr old bards
Love it

It's rare for sure
@@TaddyDigest in the 14 years I’ve been doing this. I have never seen that before. I worked on plenty of gas packs too.

What would you have done with the outlet plug if you got gas pressure? Do they sell those plugs at the supply store?
Some manifolds have a plug not all
Love your videos. Question. With that much pipe dope your overhead must be really high, how do you make a profit?
I did that
“If you did this let me know😐” 😂
3:35 - Notice, guys, Tad did _not_ put a wrench on that tubing adapter!
Does it matter how or which of the wires connect to the gas valve?
nope
@ non polarity thanks, I just subbed

I always keep those screws in my bag and tap out old rounded ones
Most techs dont use the right size allen key to open the screws
One time I was setting a unit while it was running and set my manometer on fire.
woah glad you're ok 👍
