I worked at a bakery in the early 80’s, they added nutmeg to their plain old fashioned donuts. Those were always my favorite. It really adds something to them.

@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ that's incomplete.
      Please add...
      Acts 2:37
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
      Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Baptism, in the name of Jesus Christ, is done...
For the remission of sins- Acts 2:38
To save us- 1 Peter 3:21
      Acts 2:40, Mark 16:16
To wash away sins- Acts 22:16
To be reborn to new life- Romans 6:3-6
To clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ- Galatians 3:26-27
Because we believe in Him- Mark 16:16, Acts 19:5
Because Jesus gave Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven- Matthew 16:13-19
To fulfill the great commission- Matthew 28:18-19
Because Jesus came in His Father's name- John 5:43, John 10:25
Because Jesus is the only name that saves- Acts 4:12
Because we are commanded to do all in His name- Colossians 3:17
Because Jesus said to keep His commandments- John 14:15
      www.dictionary.com/browse/remission
Obey Acts 2:38, before it's too late!
Verse 39 says it's a promise, yours and mine!
      Acts 2:39
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
      Thank you, Jesus!

Yes. Californian here. Brian is definitely a cake donut connoisseur. He's 100% right.
I'm a yeast donut guy. I'm with you on crullers though. They're pretty bomb. Also, mom-n-pop > chains...at least in Cali, king of the donuts. It's not a true donut experience unless a little Chinese lady with a bad attitude takes your order, then gives you like five free apple fritters.

1000% agree CA is king of donuts - mom and pops are the only way to go. East coast people don’t know.
The glazed old fashioned is the GOAT. You need to learn how to fry and get the double edge, otherwise you got lame supermarket style donuts.

I'm French-Canadian and my mother used to make these only at Christmas with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. The house had a scent of Heaven! Yes, the donuts had ridges and they were perfect every time! She made them ''by eye'' and they were perfect every time. They looked exactly like yours.

My mom always made the most amazing cake donuts - at nearly 86 y.o., (and since my dad passed away in 2013) she doesn't do as much baking as she used to. Her donuts were spice cake donuts - cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg in the batter. I may try this recipe with the addition of the spices.
I love the crunchy ridges on donuts, too, but for some reason, growing up in New England, commercially made donuts always had a smooth surface. Not nearly as yummy!❤️

I don't know "why" they are referred to as HALO Doughnuts...perhaps, because they have that distinct crunchy "ring" around them OR perhaps, because they are "heavenly" delicious ???? I can bake almost anything, but I struggle so hard with fried dough. I try to control the temperature, but it always comes out dark on the outside and raw on the inside, so dense, not light at all. I hope I'll learn someday..
BTW, just made your oatmeal muffins with some blueberries, they are really good and so easy!

Idk if you’re budget allows, but they have small deep fryers that allow you to set the temperature so you don’t have to monitor it with a thermometer. I got one from Walmart awhile back and it fits about 3 donuts and it has made frying so much easier.

Thank you John and thank you Brian! Old fashioned cake donuts are the best thing on earth. Too many donut places don't make them right. My theory is that they don't have people in these shops that remember. Can't wait to try making these!

These look incredible! Here in Michigan, our old fashioned sour cream donuts look like this with the yummy glaze holding ridges. But majority of other donut varieties are smooth. Lemon filled are my favorite but harder to find. Apple fritters and cinnamon sugar donuts at the cider mill during Apple picking season are top tier delicious!!

OMG John, these look EXACTLY like they were purchased at our local donut shop here in Sacramento Cal. and we literally JUST came home from there, and I see this!! Definitely ridges here in CA. Plus when my husband Bruce makes donuts or a cake with this type of glaze.....two tbs. of cocoa to the glaze is a MUST!!! Mmmmmmmm. We would love to see you do a chocolate old fashioned with orange zest in the dough, with a chocolate glaze! Please? Stay great you guys....! I AM ADDICTED TO YOUR PEANUT 🥜BUTTER BARS!!!

I have been looking for a recipe for New England hand cut donuts for YEARS. My grandmother made them all the time, but I never got the recipe from her. I remember her frying them and letting me flip them over. Such deliciousness! These donuts appear to be the closest to them, so I will try your recipe. Here's hoping.

I love maple-glazed! When I was pregnant with my daughter (24 years ago!) I CRAVED maple-flavored ANYTHING. I used to stop at our local Dunkin' Donuts every morning on my way to work to pick up a couple for breakfast.
I haven't made donuts since I was a teen-ager, so it may be well past time for me to do it again! Thanks!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Old fashioned cake donuts have always been my favorite and No one-that is no stores or bakeries make them properly anymore. I lost all my good recipes so I haven't been able to make them but now I can! My flavoring choice is a bit of nutmeg. It adds a warmth to the flavor. Also I prefer mine unglazed. So glad I stumbled across this ✌❤👍

Just made these this morning. They turned out great. Visual appeal and texture were spot on. The flavor was a little lacking (I didn't add anything). I would recommend adding something to the batter...nutmeg, pumpkin spice, or whatever. Otherwise you end up with a donut that is A+ on looks/mouth texture and C on actual flavor. Overall, great recipe.

I like the fact that you are family friendly ,professional, and can be humorous without vulgarity.
Keep smiling buddy, you're doing a great job!

How fun! Tomorrow morning is my once a year donut making day - the grown kids and families still come to enjoy them. My great grandfather’s recipe - very similar, but buttermilk instead of sour cream. Oh yeah - and fry them in lard. 😅
I’ll try the scoring trick this time!
And I’ve never used a thermometer. 😳 I’ll try that tomorrow too.
