      It’s ok, I slept at 2am and woke up at 7:15am. I don’t set the best example. Try to stop and think about what are some of the main factors that are getting in the way of more sleep: caffeine, late meals, stress, side effects from meds, your sleep cycle having been shifted too much, etc. The first step is identification of those factors.

      In general, getting 2 hours of sleep chronically, is not very healthy. I hope you can find ways to reduce your stress to get at least 6 hours of sleep if possible on average. Thanks for checking out the vid

    I started a new job 2 years ago doing irregular day and night shifts which caused my sleep pattern to completely mess up. I developed insomnia and don't sleep now without medication. Iv'e experienced 99% of the symptoms you explained. I still take medication to sleep.

      You’d have no weight gain obviously, with no caloric intake. But, that would not be healthy of course, as starvation has its own serious health consequences.

      Chronic sleep deprivation doesn’t guarantee weight gain, or difficulty losing weight. But, it definitely can be a factor for many people, especially if you have other risk factors already: current diabetes, family history of obesity, etc. Actual weight aside, striving for 6-8 solid hours of sleep is generally ideal due to other health benefits: lower risk of increased blood pressure and overall lower cardiac risk, improved cognitive performance especially in the areas of working memory/attention/concentration, and less risk of issues with anxiety/irritability/depressed mood. I tend to fall on the 4.5-6.5 hour range myself and am quite the night owl. I admit, I over caffeinate myself as well during the day, which isn’t healthy in the long run. My genetics aren’t like my brother, who tends to be on the slim side, I tend to struggle with staying in my ideal weight range. My poor sleep isn’t the end all be all cause of weight gain for me, but I can genuinely say it’s a factor in my personal life as it lends itself to less energy in the day to work out, lends itself to poor snacking at night, and changes in my blood pressure (likely a combo of poor sleep, stress, and caffeine). But, as you said, chronic sleep deprivation won’t guarantee weight gain or difficulty losing weight for some, but it’s a notable risk factor for others. Thanks for checking in and commenting.

      Definitely hard for anyone to function with 2 hours of sleep, for 5 days a week. What’s happening or what are you doing during those AM hours? Would it be helpful for me to post a “Tips to fall asleep faster” video?

      You’re exactly right, see my comment above to “bruh moment” for a similar reply. Some people, aren’t going to gain weight or have difficulty losing weight as a result of chronic sleep deprivation, or regardless of many things you throw at them. But, for others, it will be a significant risk factor. Similar to developing diabetes as an example: why can one sibling eat whatever they want for the most part and not gain a pound (damn you bro), and the other sibling from the same family stick to a relatively healthy diet yet still develop diabetes type 2. But, as mentioned in my video, even healthy test subjects without diabetes etc, had detectable changes in increased cortisol, decreases insulin sensitivity, changes in ghrelin and leptin, etc. So even “healthy” individual are put “at risk” for weight gain, not guaranteed. But, imagine if you have risk factors and issues like: a family history of diabetes, struggling with pre-diabetes, already having unhealthy eating habits and struggling with weight gain, struggling with depression, and now you throw chronic sleep deprivation and the biological changes on top of it. It’s these situations in particular, where it’s like adding fuel to the fire. Thanks for checking in and commenting. Feel free to shoot over anymore comments and questions as I’d like to keep this channel as interactive as possible!

    what if i get 2-3 hours of sleep each night but i scatter my sleep throughout the day to make up for it

    • @AndrewKimMD
      @AndrewKimMD  4 роки тому

      Ideally, in generally, it's healthiest to get 6-8 hours of sleep in a chunk at night time. It's because each night, you go through multiple cycles of sleep. It rotates between light sleep, deep wave sleep, REM sleep, and cycles back. If you don't sleep long enough, you won't get enough of the deeper phases of sleep that are considered the most important and restorative. Again, getting some sleep, even if scattered is better than no sleep, but overall you want to try to have most of the sleep at night time. If you can, I know its hard, in general you want to limit naps in the daytime to 20 min or less. The more you nap and sleep in the daytime, it messes with your nighttime schedule. Hope that info helps a bit. Hope you can get some better rest at night.

    What if your sleep deprivation is due to other disease's/disorders, chronic pain, chronic fatigue? I have a few due to my SLE, diagnosed at 15, symptomatic since 7.. Amongst other health issues I'm also a LADA Diabetic, A1C 5.8.. I eat when I can.. I don't sleep much, when I do it's 4-5 hour restless.. Currently I'm losing weight consistently..

      Hi Ariana, thanks for the checking in and for the comments. As I mentioned in other comments, chronic sleep deprivation is definitely a risk factor for weight gain, but won’t be causing weight gain for others. Everyone’s situation is unique and different. For example, if you eat less calories, than your basal metabolic rate and whatever other calories you burn from exercise/extra activity etc. Even with very poor sleep, you likely won’t gain weight. So other factors are involved. Sounds like the A1C in your situation is well controlled which is great! But, regardless of weight changes, chronic poor sleep will DEFINITELY lead to poor focus/concentration, a higher risk of accidents and lower energy in the daytime. So trying to get some more sleep, is crucial for long term health. I’m sorry to hear that good quality sleep has been hard to come by for you. Have you or your healthcare providers ever considered doing a sleep study? At a sleep lab? This is where they have you come in, sleep deprived, hook up these sticky little leads or pads, on your scalp, and have you sleep for a few hours. They monitor your brain waves, to see what stages of sleep you enter, how much of each stage of sleep you get, and also monitor things like your oxygen levels to rule out things like central or obstructive sleep apnea. And then provide some behavioral or prescription medication interventions. In general, if that’s accessible where you live and through your insurance, it’s often a good step to consider if chronic sleep issues have been a problem. As you mentioned, having other conditions or being on certain meds, can further add to natural sleep problems. So not only do those conditions or meds need to be addressed, but also, I would consider looking into a basic sleep hygiene checklist: limiting caffeine after the afternoon, not napping, not using your phone in bed, etc. most people roll their eyes at me, when I talk about sleep hygiene tips because they feel these things are so basic, but most people, when they’re honest, also admit, they actually don’t follow most of the tips on sleep hygiene checklists. I would go the the National Sleep Foundation’s website for some good tips, articles and info: www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/sleep-hygiene Thanks again Ariana for checking in and I really do hope you can find some ways to get some more sleep and quality rest! Have a good weekend, and please stay safe during these times of crisis in our world.

      Diet is a huge part of trying to start healthy weight loss, in general. Poor sleep and diet are definitely interconnected. Like I mentioned, there are definitely hormonal changes that can add to risk of unhealthy eating habits and choices but also, just indirectly, what’s open late at night? Convenient stores, fast food places and easy to make unhealthy stuff in your fridge and pantry. Get some sleep bruh! Thanks for checking in
