    Hey Sir ER doc and flight surgeon here. Great video just a heads up a pulse ox can’t tell the difference btw oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin (for CO poisoning). So pulse ox usually normal with CO poisoning.

    The oximeter will not help for detecting carbon monoxide. In fact, carbon monoxide will read falsely high on the oximeter. Still need the CO detector. The oximeter is good for hypoxia related to altitude though.

      Thanks for bringing this up. This is a critical point to make, since the oximeter in these watches is marginal at best, and without a CO-oximeter, it is useless in high CO, and might give the pilot a false sense of security. Probably worth making a correction to the video.

    Agree on all points. I have returned the previous D2 Air, but this one will most likely hold. A cool addition would be automatic activation of Pulse Ox when the watch detects you fly.

    I love mine. Only "issues" I have with it are to do with the software and are very minor. Even then, it's mainly just adding more options.
    Such as adding the weather glance to be on the face for when I'm not around the airfield.
    Or more options to put on the shortcut key.
    So really I have no complaints so far!

    Great videos and information. I would like to correct one misquote.
    Carbon Monoxide poisoning cannot be detected by any pulse oximeter. The pulse oximeter will falsely show elevated oxygen saturation when the hemoglobin is bound to CO. The light absorption spectrum cannot differentiate between oxyhemoglobin and carboxyhemoglobin. It only differentiates between deoxygenated hemoglobin and oxygenated hemoglobin. Please DO NOT rely on any pulse oximeter to detect CO poisoning. At this time the only option is a good and properly calibrated CO monitor.
    Thanks

      @DozenDuzit  2 роки тому

      Thank you for this. I have had it pointed out after making this video, but not to the detail you did. Thank you for sharing. It will still help identify hypoxia from altitude but good to know not from CO.

    I have a question, without getting into the medical aspects of pulse oximeters with regard to CO. It takes a special type of pulse oximeter to differentiate between oxygenated blood and CO (200% more affinity than oxygen). Can this watch actually tell the difference between Oxygen and Carbon monoxide?

    • @DozenDuzit
      @DozenDuzit  2 роки тому +2

      Honestly after making this video I have done some more research and I’m not sure. It will
      Definitely be able to tell you hypoxia for altitude, but I’m hesitant to confirm the ability to tell it for CO.

    • @jcijr14
      @jcijr14 Рік тому +1

      @Mike Herron, you are correct. A standard pulse ox will not detect CO. Carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin to make Carboxyhemoglobin. The wavelength of light associated with Carboxyhemoglobin is similar to oxyhemoglobin, so the pulse ox will read normal oxygen saturation even if there is significant carbon monoxide poisoning. This is well-documented, and in medical practice there are other ways to diagnose this, none of which are available on the plane. In short, there is no replacement for a CO detector in the airplane.

    How would the pulse oximeter on this watch distinguish from CO poisoning vs Hypoxia. Traditional pulse oximeters are unable to distinguish between the two.

    • @EchoKilo
      @EchoKilo 6 місяців тому

      It can’t. The same amount of oxygen molecules can be found on the hemoglobin, which is all an oximeter reads. If CO poisoning occurs the O2 will not be released from the hemoglobin, giving you the hypoxia.

    As someone who is about to start UPT, is this something you’d recommend? Looking to get my first smart watch and will be doing a ton of flying as you know and wanted the normal features of a smart watch (daily health and workouts) in addition. So cool you got to be a thunderbird pilot!

    • @DozenDuzit
      @DozenDuzit  2 роки тому

      Congrats on UPT. If you get Sheppard IFF let me know, I’ll be one of your instructors. As far as the watch, If you are in the market for a smartwatch and you fly, I highly recommend the air X10. It has all the features of the Fenix series, is cheaper, and has some cool flying features. If you want to track your flights well, maybe look at the Mach 1. Under G’s the X10 doesn’t update with the GPS as much as the Mach 1 meaning that in aerobatics (or hopefully BFM later) the Mach 1 will track the maneuvers really well. The x10 has more zig zag line tracking. It is also twice the price, so just depends on your budget. Both are great options though. Check out my Mach 1 review. Good luck in UPT!

    • @gageflaming

      @@DozenDuzit thanks for the reply! I watched your review of the Mach 1 and like the features. It looks quite a bit larger, did you find it to be an encumbrance to flying/daily life/workouts? Aside from the price, that’s the other piece that is the major drawback for me. Thanks again!

  • @jcijr14
    @jcijr14 Рік тому

    Respectfully recommend that you take down the pulse ox section. Pulse oximeters interpret oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, but the wavelength of light from Carboxyhemoglobin gets interpreted as oxyhemoglobin (i.e. oxygenated blood). That means that you can have terrible carbon monoxide poisoning, while a pulse oximeter will read normal. This is well-documented, and in medical practice there are other ways to detect carbon monoxide poisoning. In a plane, the only help you have for detecting CO is a CO detector. Pulse oximeters are great tools but not for CO poisoning.

    Hi! What navigation can we do WITHOUT Garmin Pilot? I could see it has an airport inventory worldwide, but can we have a bunch of local way points stored (or even customized points) and fly a SEQUENCE of them easily using the HSI interface? (just jumping to the next one when passing by the current one)

    • @DozenDuzit
      @DozenDuzit  2 роки тому

      This watch isn’t intended for primary navigation. It helps check weather, quickly look up info on airports, track your flights and navigate to airports if need be along with many other things, but it doesn’t store waypoints that can be used to fly sequences that I know of.
