  • Testing Garmin's NEW D2 Air X10 Pilot smartwatch. What does it do, what's new? Is it a toy or actually useful in the cockpit? Comparing the X10 to the original D2 Air, does the pulse oximeter work properly now?
    Disclosure: Garmin sent me this watch for free but with no obligation to make this video. I just like sharing new technology with you, especially aviation tech. So these are my honest thoughts and experience using the watch in case you're considering buying one.

    So I have kind of a random group question. I got the D2 Air X10, and really like it EXCEPT I synced it to my Strava. Now whenever I do a flight it shows up as an activity on my Strava with a map and everything. As much as I would like everyone to think I'm some type of elite athlete I don't think anyone would think I could run 157nm in 45 min. Seriously, I don't really want people to be able to track my flights in nearly real time. Has anyone had this issue? I haven't been able to find a fix for it.

    I bought the Fenix 6X Pro about a year ago , brilliant watch . However I think my Next watch may be more Aviation orientated , ie the Mach 1 perhaps , as you mention , it has the Golf app as well as the standard features the Fenix has . seems like a no brainer for those who love flying .

    Brilliant Stef! My wife got me the original D2 Air last year as a gift after we watched your vLog testing it out. Still a great piece of kit so I doubt I'd get the new one considering the sentimental value, but you'd think Garmin could have just did a software/hardware update for the original D2 to make it smoother and add gestures. Nice vLog as always.

    Would you still keep the old one stashed away in a bag or something for redundancy’s sake or all in on the new watch? Nice to see the o2 sensor working better on this watch. And for all the troubles Bluetooth causes us, why haven’t there been a new standard invented yet? Could be good. Cool video, looking forward to hearing how the flight with it goes.

    Hi Stef, in regards to stability of connection to iPhone, have you had any troubles? I returned my D2 Air partly because I kept needing to restart the watch. Same with very slow if ever capturing GPS signal, even if outdoors. BTW I own an Apple Watch SE and I find it’s smoothness of connection and interphase is ages ahead of Garmin’s.

    Do you have to touch it to view the display? Until smart watches can show the display continuously without killing battery life, I'll wait. Glad I didn't spring for the first version. It's not cheap either and sounds like something that is quickly headed to the junk drawer. Another great review, Stef, Thanks!

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  2 роки тому +1

      It has a "raise to wake" feature whereby if you raise your arm and point the face towards you it knows you're "looking" at it and turns the display on. You can set how long the display stays on before sleeping again as well.

      And this is why I have the Garmin Vivomove3. It is an actual watch. With working moving hands. But it has a touch screen display under the hands ( which move out of the way when the screen is touched) and when you forget to charge it and the display goes dead. The hands will still operate as a perfectly functioning watch for… well longest I’ve left it is a week. Just don’t spend the extra on the bells and whistles model as that does away with the physical hands.

    You should totally keep the old pulse oxymeter, both as redundancy and as something you can easily pass to your passengers. It would be kinda pain to do with a watch.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I didn't phrase that quite right in the video. Def keeping the fingertip pulse ox as a backup in the aircraft. More that I will use the watch as a primary means of measuring.

    Does the GPS take 15-30 min to actually come online like the other garmin fitness trackers/old D2? I know garmin likes to trade GPS availability for battery life (there's your battery magic), but frankly I'd rather have the GPS always on and always working like the apple watch (even indoors!) and charge it everyday than the other way around... looks cool though.

    Does the SPO2 analysis also work during a shaky flight? Most devices ask you to hold still and aboard the measurement in bumpy moments.
    Aside, I am not sure where the real advantage of the watch is. Aside from SPO2, it doesn't add anything which you don't have in the cockpit anyways.

    I think compared to my MARQ Aviator with Saphire "Glass" and Titanium it kind of looks like a toy watch. I think I prefer the looks of the MARQ Aviator, functionality seems pretty identical. You might want to take a look at that, if they still sell it. And yes, 2 weeks of battery life. But only without extensive use of GPS tracking. In my experience with 2 hours in flight with tracking you see more like 4-5 days.
    Does this thing really have an elevated glass surface? I would most likely destroy that quickly. The MARQ has the flat saphire set back protected by the watch and a ceramic bezel. Looks like new after 3 years of abuse. I doubt the D2 X10 can do that. At least not for me 😇

    Hey Stef, thanks for the overview! Love the videos, always informative! I have a quick question, I'm getting my ppl and don't want to use foreflight because it only works with Apple. I'm not a fan of Apple products, I don't like how Apple tries to force you to use other Apple products, and I don't like that foreflight only works with Apple! If you can't tell by now I'm anti-apple!! Lol The problem is all the reviews I have seen comparing Garmin pilot to foreflight are in favor of foreflight. Seems to be more intuitive, cuts down on tasks, and just easier to use. What is your take? I'd really love to use Garmin pilot for connecting to Garmin avionics, and now the watch!
