  • Today we take you to meet a mother and son duo who opened an ice shop that also sells pottery in Taipei. Hu Ting-ju, the shop’s founder, is also an avid potter. During the pandemic, she decided to open an ice shop selling shaved ice and pottery. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us into the shop for a look!
Handmade osmanthus jelly, tremella, rose jam, and osmanthus syrup are added to shaved ice. Then the creation is topped with lemon and mint. Titled “Two Flowers,” it’s the top seller at this Taipei shaved ice shop.
Another favorite is mulberry shaved ice, featuring tremella, mulberry, and mint. This ice shop is run by Hu Ting-ju and her son.

    Founder
We first want to make sure that our ingredients are all natural. I myself love to eat shaved ice. First of all, we use brown rock sugar, which was made using cotton thread in ancient times. The osmanthus should not be vulcanized, but should be natural, slightly medium yellow, and not golden yellow. The roses must be certified. We use roses from the Puli Farmers Association.
Hu is an avid potter, and the ice shop is adorned with her own pottery. During the pandemic, she decided to combine her art and a much-loved treat in one business.

    Founder
When I started with pottery, I made sculptures for landscape projects. Later on, I began making pottery for daily use. I find pottery to be very therapeutic. I have been doing it for about 15 years.
Hu’s son, Yang Chia-hong, studied biotechnology and has an interest in food science. After graduating, he decided to join his mother in running the ice shop.
    Yang Chia-hong
    Owner
During my student years, I was interested in food. I studied biotechnology, and I learned a lot about food processing. We feel that health is the top priority. We use the most natural ice, sugar, and ingredients, which we make ourselves. We start preparing the ingredients in the morning. Every topping takes a long time to cook, and it’s hard work, you need to watch the pot so that it doesn’t burn.
The store is nestled in an alley in Taipei’s Dongmen. By combining pottery and ice, the mother and son duo hope to deliver a feast for the eyes and the palate.

There’s a big sugar free snowcone bus that drives up to the summer camp and gives out the treats to the kids on hot days. They are so refreshing and have no or low calories. The sugar free flavorings have come a long way from the saccharine-laced concoctions that used to taste like cough syrup.
Speaking of innovations, I have been thinking of combining a bidet toilet, colonic machine, and foot soak tub into one bathroom experience. I was considering having a water fountain or hair washing sink up top for full hydration from all sides but maybe a shaved ice/snowcone dispenser is the way to go.
