  • I’ve made a few videos looking at DC comics’s live action histories of certain characters like Batman, Superman and The Flash to look at which one of their respective surrounding world’s characters took the longest amount of time to appear in live action from their comic book debut. This video will be doing the same thing but not for a specific character but for the entire Justice League.

Those are the original Huntress, Helena Wayne. She's was from Earth-2 and isn't considered a Justice League character. Helena Bertinelli is the post-crisis version who's a member of the Justice League and didn't appear in live action until her appearance on Arrow.

I wish my dad had been alive to see all the comic book characters from the 50's and 60's in movies now.
As a man in my 50's who grew up with DC and Marvel comics (they were in almost every UK newsagents), I was blown away by the "circle" scene in Avengers Assemble, panning round all those formerly 2D heroes...

I was born in late December 1957, yes, I just had my 65th Birthday, we had 1 channel, Black and White, CBS. I was in my 60s before I ever saw Batman TV Show, the George Reeves Superman, and many shows of the 1960s. I now own them all in DVD. I am also trying to collect old Serials. I have several now, not yet Complete as I'm still missing the Shazam Captain Marvel and Kirk Alyn Superman. But I have managed to get the 2 Batman, Blackhawk, Captain America, the 3 Flash Gordon, and the Buck Rogers!

Technically, Darkseid is a villain of the New Gods, but he was such a good villain that he ended up going against most of the DC universe. Also, the first appearance of Killer Frost is in Firestorm #3, in 1978, although I'm not sure if it's supposed to be the same character as the later Frost. I was also going to mention the Ray, but you covered the 2nd version of the Ray, Ray Terrill, and not the original Ray, Happy Terrill. So Happy Terrill hasn't (yet) appeared in live action?

Lordis in naomi has strong allusions to zatana. She has the purple hair like the modern versions, she pops up when needed. Is often searching for things runs her dad's business whom we never see, and is obsessed with the character's comic in universe(since alternate universes in naomi are a plot point this could allude to a different varient of the character in another universe i.e. jay garrick was a comic character in barry allens world leading to flash of two worlds) lordis would actually be called Zatanna as a cutsie codename when playing paintball and going on missons with the gang. Naomi's bestie also calls her out as a possible alien, which could be a call to zatannas mother being from another dimension. Plus we never find out what Lordis was hiding the night she was on Naomi's street. (My guess is a child...but hey it could be magical stuff)

Legends of the Superheroes was so bitter-sweet for me when it 1st aired; so awesome to finally get to see so many heroes live finally, especially with Adam West and Burt Ward validating it by reprising their roles. But the comedy of it (especially the second TV movie a year or so later) was so annoying to me and my buddies. At least if it'd been handled as well-balanced camp like the 60s Batman it would've still be really fun. So close and yet so far.

About Blue Beetle. I have a recording of a 1941 radio series of Blue Beetle, voiced by Frank Lovejoy, (at least for the beginning of the series. Due to movie commitments, he was replaced). So, the character has a MUCH longer live action gap than the ten years mentioned. Blue Beetle as a comic book started in 1939.

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena Рік тому

I was just about to ask that! Didn't The Blue Beetle debut in comics in 1939, and in live action (on television) on The Electric Company in 1974, as portrayed by Jim Boyd? I don't think he is counting radio programs as "Live Action" though, because there have been other radio programs that predated film and TV appearances, such as the Superman radio program which debuted in 1940, and the Batman radio show which debuted in 1942.

That was the original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett who was a part of Fox comics until they went out of business in the 50s. Eventually Charlton Comics got the rights and replaced the character with Ted Kord in the 80s. The original Beetle was never on any DC Superhero team, which is why the live action gap in the vid is what it is.

    • @anonyarena
      @anonyarena Рік тому

@@tonygazso9027 Oh, I see. Thank you for the clarification. So, you are saying the first Blue Beetle is Dan Garrett, the second Blue Beetle is Ted Cord, and the third Blue Beetle is Jamie Reiss, but it is the Dan Garrett Blue Beetle who was featured in live action in the children's TV show. I remember Spiderman from Marvel was also featured on the same show. I admit I have never read a Blue Beetle comic book and did not know these were different characters, but I did remember the Blue Beetle from that TV show when I was a child.

@anonyarena The Electric Company Blue Beetle played by Jim Boyd is unrelated to any comics version (Dan Garrett, Ted Kord and Jaime Reyes).
Fun Fact: Jim Boyd voiced Spider-Man on the Spidey Super Stories record album produced by Peter Pan Records (taking over for Danny Seagren who played Spider-Man on the show but never spoke and communicated with thought balloons to get kids to read).
Skip Hinnant voiced his Fargo North Decoder character from The Electric Company on the album as well and was the voice of Fritz The Cat in Fritz The Cat (1972) and The Nine Lives Of Fritz The Cat (1974).

If memory serves, the lady magician you speak of from The Six Million Dollar Man was not a magician, she was a high school student with ESP named Audrey Moss (played by Robbie Lee) who helped Steve Austin as his magician's assistant to read the bad guys minds.
She appeared in a couple of SMDM episodes (The E.S.P. Spy and Hocus- Pocus) but she has no connection to Zatanna and DC Comics.
The Wonder Girl on Wonder Woman (played by Debra Winger) is named Drusilla, not Donna Troy who was a member of the Teen Titans not the JLA and even if she wasn't, the Wonder Woman stories featuring her were set in the 1940s which would make this Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl members of the JSA.

The original Dr. Light was a recurring JLA villain since 1962, decades before he fought the Teen Titans for the first time so I'd say you've got that a bit backwards. He did wind up fighting the Titans but not until he'd finally given up on beating the JLA after many, many tries.

  • @jrasicmark1
    @jrasicmark1 Рік тому +1

Love this video, though I'm a bit confused. I haven't kept up with all the more modern variants of characters or the more recent DC TV shows and movies, so maybe the histories I'm thinking of are now irrelevant but...
    1. You got Fire's debut right, she started as Green Fury in the Super Friends comic and similarly Ice started as Icemaiden in the same title, but you listed her debut as being much later. Though I vaguely remember reading that the first Ice was killed and replaced by a different character, so maybe the debut you listed is the second Ice? Still, I thought the original might have been worth mentioning.
    2. You pronounced Aquaman's wife's name as Mehruh. But the character was prominently featured in Filmation's animated Aquaman TV series, and I'm pretty sure it was always pronounced Meeruh there,. And writers and editors at DC were listed in the credits of the show so I always thought that was the correct pronunciation.
    3. Cyborg was a founding member of the NEW Teen Titans, not the Teen Titans. The founding members of the original Teen Titans were Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Wonder Girl, and Speedy (though Speedy's inclusion was a retcon). I always considered the New Teen Titans to be just a continuation of the original team.
    4. Wasn't there a short lived Birds of Prey TV series which featured the Huntress before the Helena Bertinelli debut you listed? Or was that Huntress a different character? Maybe that was Helena Wayne?
    5. You mention the original Hawkgirl's (Shiera Sanders Hall) original comics debut, but she was only related to the All-Star Squadron and JSA, not really the JLA. It was the Silver Age Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman (Shayera Hol/Shiera Hall) who had the first and longest affiliation with the JLA. Kendra Sanders has been a member of both the JSA and JLA, but she was a different character from the Golden Age version (though maybe she's reincarnated from the same character, but that's confusing since I thought the Golden Age character would have had to have been alive and active when Kendra was born). Or were all versions of the character merged into one in the Rebirth?
    6. I've never heard Neron's name spoken out loud before now, but I always thought the name was based on Nero, the mad Roman emperor from history, and whenever I've heard his name spoken out loud on TV or movies, it's pronounced Neeroh, so I always thought Neron would be similarly pronounced Neeron, not Nirron. But I could be wrong. The similarly named Captain Nemo from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the Extraordinary Gentlemen was always pronounced Neemoh out loud, not Nehmoh, so that's something else that led me to think Neron (and Mera for that matter) would be pronounced with a long E sound.
    7. I would say the original Dr. Light is pretty much equally a JLA and Teen Titans villain because he was originally an exclusive JLA villain. He first attacked the Teen Titans only as a means of using them to get revenge on their mentors in the JLA. When they beat him, he transferred his desire for revenge to them. But he had such a long history of fighting the JLA before that, I think it pretty much evens out.

To clear up about Black Canary: She originally was the Earth 2 Black Canary.
When her Husband died, she left JSA to join the JLA. However, since time marches on and comic heroes don’t age: DC recognize that Black Canary would be in her 70s. So they made Black Canary as a legacy, from mother to daughter.

The Adventures of Captain Marvel movie serial is the only depiction of the Big Red Cheese that uses the name "Captain Marvel." After the debut of Marvel Comics, all "Captain Marvel" projects - and that is STILL his name! - must use the term Shazam!

@@james-russellgause4735 Yeah, no TV show can bear the name of "Captain Marvel" unless Marvel Comics is behind it. Only the serial, which predated when they first became Marvel Comics.

He was still called Captain Marvel for a while in DC Comics even though Marvel created Captain Mar-Vell in 1967.
The first 14 issues of Shazam! had the tagline "The Original Captain Marvel" on the cover before they changed it to "The World's Mightiest Mortal" but they still called him Captain Mavel inside the comic pages.
Freddy Freeman was still called Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Batson was still called Mary Marvel on the inside, but on the covers they were called "The World's Mightiest Boy" and "The World's Mightiest Girl" or just "Junior" and " Mary"
They also had Tall Billy, Fat Billy and Hill Billy also known as The Three Lieutenant Marvels who were also named Billy Batson and also had Captain Marvel's powers.
Jackson Bostwick and John Davey were both credited as "Captain Marvel" on Shazam!
Billy Batson, Mary Batson, Freddy Freeman and Uncle Dudley were called Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr. and Uncle Marvel or The Marvel Family on The Kid Super Power Hour With Shazam! In 1981.
DC was reprinting Captain Marvel stories from Fawcett Comics but had to switch the title to Shazam! to link it to the TV show but the Captain Marvel Jr., Mary Marvel, Marvel Family and Hoppy The Marvel Bunny logos were not changed.
Tom Tyler played Captain Marvel in The Adventures Of Captain Marvel in 1941.
Garrett Craig played Captain Marvel in the two Legends Of The Superheroes specials in 1979.
Jackson Bostwick and John Davey played Captain Marvel from 1974 to 1977
(John Davey also played Cap in The Secrets Of Isis in 1975).
John Valdetero played Captain Marvel in an episode of The Drew Carey Show in 2001.
Captain Marvel has been voiced by Burr Middleton in The Kid Super Power Hour With Shazam!
Rob and Chad Lowe on Young Justice
And Jerry O'Connell on Justice League Unlimited
There also was another Captain Marvel from another Comics company (Magazine Enterprises) who had the power to shoot his limbs off his body in 1966.
The UK's Marvelman is also a rip-off of Captain Marvel who says the word "Kimota!" (Atomik spelled backwards) to change into Marvelman.
His publishers were also forced to change his name to Miracleman and his sidekicks Young Marvelman, Kid Marvelman to Young Miracleman and Kid Miracleman because of Marvel's copyright which was not that strict in the 70s.
Zachary Levi is the only one that they are trying to force everyone to call Shazam when that is the wizard's name that grants him his powers, even though the Billy Batson of the 70s (Michael Gray), actually calls him Captain Marvel in Fury Of The Gods.
Captain Marvel was often referenced on M*A*S*H set in a time when he was owned by Fawcett Comics.
And to make matters worse, they are presenting Carol Danvers (Brie Larsen) as Captain Mar-Vell who was originally the original Ms. Marvel while Captain Mar-Vell who was originally a male character who became trapped in The Negative Zone used to switch places with Rick Jones when they would slam the Nega Bands on their wrists together.
Brie Larson isn't even the first actress to play Ms. Marvel (later Captain Marvel) either.
An unknown actress first portrayed Ms. Marvel in a 1977 commercial for Six Flags Great Adventure.
Fawcett Comics originally wanted to call him Captain Thunder.
Maybe they should have went with that.
