Same here! While a hobbyist, I'm having a blast working with extreme limitations of past consoles. I'm currently working on the very first gameboy. The dev cycle loop is so much fun! For Mode 7 style pseudo 3D effect racing games on Game Boy Advance, I recommend Sega Arcade Gallery. It has great versions of OutRun and Super Hang-On. Though not racing, the game also contains After Burner & a very fun version of Space Harrier.
The Crash Bandicoot racer sounds like it has similar boost mechanics to Diddy Kong Racing, letting go of the gas just before you hit a zipper. This was an amazing video can’t wait to try out some of these games! Super circuit is one of my favorite Mario kart games, I don’t have any nostalgia for it, I only first played it a year or two ago but I love playing it even though I’m not great at it. @@Ncajb2aa thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the video. Let me know which games you end up checking out. Someone else commented and gave a great explanation for the controls in Super Circuit. I'm going to give it another shot. I'm probably just so used to 8 that I expect SC to feel like that. Especially since Nicktoons Racing on the GBA controls nearly IDENTICAL to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is really wild.
Dude, what a treat! I loved this video. Can't wait to watch the rest of this series. Thanks for letting me know about Nicktoons Racing. I'll have to boot that one up on my Wii's GBA emulator.
This was a fantastic video. I love how it went in alphabetical order and we got to see everything. My only gripe is that, obviously you had to use an emulator and I'm not sure if this is prevalent in all of them, but I noticed that in all of the games with 3D environments, you can see the opponent cars through the track/environment. As in the cars in front of you that already went over a hill or around a bend that should obscure them from your view are still visible. I remember seeing this a lot on early PS1 emulators and I swear I've played a few of these games on an emulator that didn't have this issue. It's just been so long that I couldn't tell you which one or whether it was on a PSP, original Xbox or PC. Definitely one of those 3 platforms though. Anyway, awesome reviews! Subscribed!
@@l11l1venom1l11l thanks so much! Yeah, I noticed that problem too. I tried messing around with the settings but it was really give and take so that felt like the best issue to leave in. I get that you organized the games alphabetically, but I think for series, best example being NFS, you could have gone chronologically in that little section. You can save some time by excluding Mode 7 games as they are not 3D, because they have no height, i.e the road doesn't go up and down. It's like Wolfenstein 3D. You are on a plane moving along 2 planes: forward/backward and right/left.
That is totally true, but I LOVE Mode 7, haha. I couldn't leave those out. Have you seen the hills in Simpsons Road Rage? Those are some wild Mode 7 shenanigans.
@@GameDreamery Yeah, it is crazy what talented developers can pull off. There are inofficial projects for the GBA like getting classic DOOM or Tomb Raider and Mario 64 to work on it too. I don't know if you include those when the genre comes up.
@atdynax I'm going to have a "Bonus" video at the end that will include all of the playable unreleased/prototype games I can get a hold of (Tomb Raider, Quake, Turok, etc.). I am dying to play the Mario 64 game but the dev said he won't ever be able to release it unfortunately. It looks incredible!

I’m shocked in the difference in quality between moto gp and moto racer advance, advance looks way more fun to play imo moto gp looks bland in comparison and surprisingly both games came out the same year
To me it looks way better than Mario kart super circuit which I didn’t think I would say I really like the character animations and pretty impressive graphics - to me it looks so good for a gba game it looks closer to psp graphics - while to me super circuit clearly looks like a gba game, will definitely give nicktoons racing a play at some point as I enjoyed the surprisingly good Nickelodeon ds racing game on ds
Konami Crazy Racers is one of the best GBA games full stop, and the fact no sequel came along boggles my mind. Brilliant roster, imaginative courses, and such catchy music!

F1 games require you know the track and braking points. Braking before the corner is crucial to make it through it and create a good exit out off said corners. It therefore requires a more measured approach than other racing disciplines.
I would give an honorable mention to the early voxel-based prototype of Banjo Pilots. I honestly think that it looked a lot more interesting than the final product we actually ended up getting
Came here mainly to see if Nicktoons Racing would show up and I'm glad it did, and I'm also really glad to see that some else likes it! I had the game since I was young and always liked it better than Super Circuit because I felt like Nicktoons Racing just controlled better. It's a surprisingly solid kart racer that deserves more attention.
Agree completely! Nicktoons Racing was easily my favorite game I found while making this list. Honestly, it's the only game I've continued to play even after making the video.

If you haven't checked out Ironfall, it's worth a look. It just dropped on Switch last week. Originally it came out for 3DS but the Switch version is the one to grab. It's a fun Gear of War-like shooter, but keep your expectations in check as it's pretty simple overall. I really liked Rise too actually! But yeah, I'm the same, I'll support VD Dev forever!
F-ZERO MENTIONED WOOOOOO heres some driving tips to help you improve should you choose to play f-zero again: - blast turning: on all 3 GBA games (as well as the original and 99) you can mash the accelerator through corners to grip to the road better (this helps especially in maximum velocity) - side attacking: in gp legend and climax, you can side attack (double press a shoulder button) to side attack, which is handy when taking turns, but dont spam it in climax or you'll slow down too much jumps: hold down on the dpad to go higher while jumping, and to smoothly land to keep your speed (you can also hold up to fall faster which helps in certain situations) some climax exclusive ones: - boost fire: by spin attacking (L+R) then boosting you get a really powerful boost - sharp turns: by holding down on the dpad then turning you turn sharper than usual, which helps significantly with hairpins (if you use the shoulder buttons you turn even tighter too!) happy racing!
@@uncooked_ham that's an unreleased game called Haunted Mansion, which tied into the mid-2000s movie. You can find the Rom online. It's a weired one, but totally playable.

Imagine how decent a gran turismo style game on the gba would have been with fully loaded’s graphics I’m really impressed by the graphics in that game 😳
I remember Nintendo Official Magazine UK's original incarnation (NOM) giving _Crazy Frog Racer_ their lowest-ever score (5%) in their last-ever issue, which is the main thing I remember that particular gem of a game for! Or as they put it? _"Worst Ringtone Ever becomes Worst Game Ever. Not crazy, just crap"._
I don’t remember if this applies to the GBA NFS games but in the original 3DO release, the diagonals changed your steering sensitivity, where diagonal up gave you gentle steering and diagonal down gave you aggressive steering. Try that in Porsche Unleashed
Surprised you didn't put Driver 2 Advance on here, but I imagine that'll appear somewhere else down the line. Looking forward to the FPS list. I know another UA-camr has done a similar video, but it'll be nice to see here someone else's take on some of the games. Hopefully, you suffered through Serious Sam long enough to get the weapon that drops grand pianos on enemies. Top Gear Rally is probably my favorite GBA racing game. I don't mind the blindness of the sides of thetracks. They get the job done and allow the framerate to be stable. It also doesn't really look bad from my POV, but I can totally see where you're coming from. Nice to know that there are more NFS games on the GBA. I only have NFSU, I'll have to look out for Carbon.
I've actually got Driver 2 and 3 in the next video about Action games. I had a hard time deciding whether to put in in racing games or action games, but since there are on-foot sections, I decided on Action. I actually didn't get to the piano gun, but I might have to go back and try it again just to see that haha. I think the Top Gear Rally graphic issues are probably because I didn't play it on an original-size screen. On the tiny GBA screen, I bet it's hardly not a problem at all.
I have to disagree about the controls of Mario Kart Super Circuit, which are the prime reason why I love that game and find it to be one of the best ones to this day. You definitely have to embrace the drift mechanic though (learn when to jump into and out of a drift; try to find spots to do sufficiently long drifts to earn a boost after completion). Basically, if you're ever touching the breaks, you're doing it "wrong". Strategically releasing the A-Button can help you keep/regain control, but even that is ultimately unnecessary. The main flaw of the game is that the fun mechanics are 'hidden' beyond an (albeit relatively mild) skill hurdle. All subsequent games are more fun for noobs and first time players, which is why Super Circuit is criminally underrated. Maybe something as simple as a short drifting tutorial would have drastically altered the game's perception and enabled more people to enjoy it as the great game it truely is. I for one immensely prefer the challenge of having to commit to a drift and get the timing right in order for it to work out - while my effort is valued by the game and I can actually finish the track in half the time. ...as opposed to Mario Kart 8 where every input feels somewhat inconsequential by comparison. (Anybody else here who finds themself enraged by how bumping into stuff is handled in 8 particularly? - especially the slowing down where Karts would have fallen off the track earlier in the series?? That just feels wrong. I want the game to give me more feedback if I drive poorly. A change which seems to have been implemented to thwart frustration with casual players has the EXACT reverse effect on me.)
@@Pottmitdeckel I really appreciate this comment! It's super helpful to hear an explanation for the controls/design of Super Circuit. I'm going to go back and try it out with this in mind and see if I can wrap my head around it. Maybe I'm just too used to the controls from 8. My favorite way to play 8 is at 200cc, with the weapons turned off. Drifting around corners that fast makes the game feel like a roller coaster, and holding a tight turn when half your kart is teatering off the track is exhilarating in a way I've never found in any other racer. I hear you though about the collisions, I agree. Thanks again for your comment. I look forward to giving SC another shot!
The depth of the driving was 100% the reason I adored super circuit as a kid. It was super mario kart snes style but perfected and tighter. This game was so satisfying to race fast because of how much skill it required. The game didn't feel as great when I went back to try and play it as an adult but it was mostly due to becoming accustomed to the newer style MK games.
@drew6166 I think that's what happened to me too. I remember loving it as a kid, but when I came back to it for this review I really struggled with it.
Bro that atv game looks better than the mx vx atv game on DS and it came out so much later on. That's sorta crazy how they used to really utilize the engines of whatever platform they developed for. Ports for gameboy that were optimized FOR gameboy look amazing and compete with the native games like mario.
I never liked 3d games on the GBA. I was probably around 13 when I got one and always preferred the optimised sprite animation games like advanced wars, fire emblem etc. the system just wasn’t powerful enough to play 3d games well and as we were at the GameCube era it felt like what was the point.
i got that game just called "Monster Trucks" as a kid... safe to say that was one of my least played ones. at least i got NFS Underground 2 on GBA at the same time
I’m shocked that the game monster truck madness looks and plays way better than a monster truck game made a year later madness actually looks amazing for a gba racing game imo

as a fan of the genre who played most of these as well, I think you were a bit too harsh on Tokyo Xtreme. What you called "lack of tension" plays to me as the same nice slower pace that you enjoyed on Ford Racing, for example. Looking forward to the next ones.
@@voltcorp I can totally see that, maybe I was a little harsh haha. The big difference I thought between TXRA and Ford 3 was that the levels were interesting in Ford. As bad as it sounds, i imagine the reason the mini map in that F-1 game is so large is because they expect you to glance at it to see upcoming turns.
That makes a lot of sense. If they had just fixed the draw distance, it might have worked without it. Maybe if I'm really, really bored some day I'll try it out again and see if watching the map helps haha.

This was an amazing video can’t wait to try out some of these games! Super circuit is one of my favorite Mario kart games, I don’t have any nostalgia for it, I only first played it a year or two ago but I love playing it even though I’m not great at it. The drifting is difficult and kinda weird but it feels so rewarding when you finally get a boost from it. I can’t wait for the next gba videos! Keep up the great work!
Especially since Nicktoons Racing on the GBA controls nearly IDENTICAL to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which is really wild.

thanks so much!! Glad you liked it! Lots more on the way!
You can save some time by excluding Mode 7 games as they are not 3D, because they have no height, i.e the road doesn't go up and down. It's like Wolfenstein 3D. You are on a plane moving along 2 planes: forward/backward and right/left.

F1 games require you know the track and braking points. Braking before the corner is crucial to make it through it and create a good exit out off said corners. It therefore requires a more measured approach than other racing disciplines.

F-ZERO MENTIONED WOOOOOO
heres some driving tips to help you improve should you choose to play f-zero again:
- blast turning: on all 3 GBA games (as well as the original and 99) you can mash the accelerator through corners to grip to the road better (this helps especially in maximum velocity)
- side attacking: in gp legend and climax, you can side attack (double press a shoulder button) to side attack, which is handy when taking turns, but dont spam it in climax or you'll slow down too much
jumps: hold down on the dpad to go higher while jumping, and to smoothly land to keep your speed (you can also hold up to fall faster which helps in certain situations)
some climax exclusive ones:
- boost fire: by spin attacking (L+R) then boosting you get a really powerful boost
- sharp turns: by holding down on the dpad then turning you turn sharper than usual, which helps significantly with hairpins (if you use the shoulder buttons you turn even tighter too!)
happy racing!
Heck yeah! This is super helpful. I took a screenshot of your comment so I can reference it next time I play. Thanks!

Or as they put it? _"Worst Ringtone Ever becomes Worst Game Ever. Not crazy, just crap"._
haha yup, that's a perfect description for it!
Ports for gameboy that were optimized FOR gameboy look amazing and compete with the native games like mario.

as a fan of the genre who played most of these as well, I think you were a bit too harsh on Tokyo Xtreme.
