Thanks for the video. I wish this was easier. I'm buying a used JK as a daily driver / part time hunting rig. We hunt hogs at night with thermals. Having the windshield down makes it possible to drive ranch roads in complete darkness using thermal monoculars.
Great video - 8 years old and still the best walkthrough I've been able to find. Curious, once you remove the exterior corner brackets and windshield wipers, is there anything else on the exterior (stock) that would get in the way? I have an '07 JK. Haven't attempted this, but from the looks of it the hood panel just below the windshield looks like it would need to be remove to fold the windshield down. But I could be wrong!
It is NOT illegal at all, anymore than it would be to ride a motorcycle without a windshield. I know for a fact it is not illegal in NY State. However, you must have two side view mirrors. I drive my '91 with the windshield down all the time around town but you sure do still need a helmet with face shield or professional "Red Baron" type Snoopy googles. I've got a set of those too. The 1991 Wrangler does not require removing the windshield wipers and the windshield can be taken down in < 10 minutes after removing the windshield to roll bar connector piece (one bolt for each side) and one bolt on each side of the windshield.
The original Willys had a actual hinges didn't they? So did the Toyota FJ Landcruisers, I seen it in a 1970 FJ. I've seen that the 2018 Jeeps have those hinges now, which is awesome. Cool vid, but a lot of work lol
2:31 The windshield is folded down why do you have to remove the support beams? if I were to fold down the windshield, would it work if I could have the support beams up and have a mesh top covering the front seats for shade? Or would it collapse
It's not required however you will have two sharp beams that could impale someone if you were to get into an accident. I just prefer not to get someone else killed due to my negligence.
Im not sure who would want to do this all the time. I was curious on how to do it when I first folded the windshield down but there were no videos on how it was done. So that's when I started pulling stuff apart. I at least wanted to give people the chance to see how it was done and how much work was involved before they got their hands dirty as well.
If you like riding around with the top and the doors off is awesome, then dropping the windshield is the next logical step for a jeep owner. It makes you feel out in the open. Obviously not for the highway, but great for country driving. I love my Jeep, and its versatility.
Its really an amazing machine. Mine is obviously newer but the old school CJ5s are amazing for that. Way more versatile then my 2012 JK. But never the less, it is still soooo freeing.
Useful information for when you inevitably strip one of those windshield bolts or the crappy bracket that holds the square nut on behind the windshield bolt. Thanks, now to take it down so I can unfeck the aforementioned problem.
"PTYWGN" ~~> Potty Wagon? Yeah, okay, I know - pretty lame, but I couldn't pass it up. Anyway, informative video, and thanks for taking the time to make & post.
I personally had no issues with leaks. I only ever broke the windshield down a handful of times. I could see how you could experience leaks after doing this a bunch of times but it never happened to me
What a joke. Way too involved, no wonder Jeep doesn't have this in their manual or DVD. Thanks for posting this. I guess I'll never do this because I can't see myself bitching and griping in the middle of nowhere for an hour. Oh, and MTFBWY!
I've taken mine off once since I got my JK a month ago. It was fun cruising around the foothills outside Golden. But I wouldn't keep them off as a rule. Plus I wondered the whole time if I was going to get pulled over for not having mirrors. Not sure if that's technically street legal.
Yeah, don’t forget about the retaining clips for the visors. Don’t forget about removing the grommets that hold the wiring there’s a whole lot more than what you’re portraying in your video all in all it’s quite a pain in the ass just saying.
I don’t recommend it unless you absolutely have to because you have to replace the nut that holds the mount on the outside that would be the only reason to lay this windshield down other than that don’t do it

NOT ILLEGAL,
Just have to wear ewye protection, falls under the same rules as a motorcycle....
It's either not illegal, or not unforced in Texas. I've been running with the shield down on highway in 79 cj5 for 25 years.
Never gotten shit from cops in MD either, but knowing them, it's just a matter of time.
got 25 years worth of bug juice on the lips huh? hehe...jk

Hey I’m having trouble removing the two bolts that hold the mount for the pod lights.. any suggestions?? All it does is spins but won’t come out
Great video!

Cool vid, but a lot of work lol
I had a Willys they had 2 latches on the dash and that was it, it was down. Wipers came from the top so they didn't need to be removed.
to remove the frame there should be 4 bolts holding the hinge down just remove those bolts and it should come right off.. or am i wrong
Why do you have to remove the support beams?
Because they are connected to the front windshield. If you do not remove them then the windshield will not fold down.

What kind of hard top hoist do you have in your garage?
It is just a custom lift I made with a hand crank wench, some pullies, and some rope.
HI! Are you interested in testing new LED tail lights for JK?
I appreciate the offer but I no longer own the JK
@@rollercoasterfreak92 oh! thanks.
Was this video made in Pasadena?
This was filmed in Omaha, Nebraska
i was enjoying the video until i noticed all the hawks gear.... damn Blackhawks man... lol
Hello that piece that you drilled of what’s it called looking to buy 2 new ones since mine are rusted 😂
I believe you are referring to the "A pillar mount"
My American Dream yes thank you

pity wagon
Thanks man!
Hey dude a question when reassembling it did u have issues of water leaks or all back to normal ??
I personally had no issues with leaks. I only ever broke the windshield down a handful of times. I could see how you could experience leaks after doing this a bunch of times but it never happened to me
Broke ??? Hahaha
How ?
He means took it down when he says broke it down
Not illegal in Florida but, just like riding a motorcycle, you have to wear eye protection to be legal.
What a joke. Way too involved, no wonder Jeep doesn't have this in their manual or DVD. Thanks for posting this. I guess I'll never do this because I can't see myself bitching and griping in the middle of nowhere for an hour. Oh, and MTFBWY!
FYI - this guy didn’t just lay the window down, he took off way too much. This is dangerous - rolling on the trail like this would be certain death.
Man my yj is alot easier 😂. Super fun dropping it honestly
Yep... no way that im gonna do that
I think i will keep mine on i don't like having bugs in my eyes
or my mouth..
thanks!
I took the doors off and I still feel unsafe, and funny. Put them back on I feel More safe. Although the top is alot of fun.
Ive heard a decent bit of people say they don't like taking the doors off, I've personally never had a issue with them off

I know it looks better, but those 'support beams' you took off are also the roll bars. I hope you don't flip it over.
Turn the lights on...
HOUR AND A HALF? BOY you're either slackin or jokin.
Loose the music!!!!!!
Tin Man Bbq GREGORYTINMAN What can I say....its royalty free
Glad you spent all the time to find the most annoying music possible to make your video unwatchable.
I did it just for you! Always knew you would show up here complaining about things that don't really matter in life. Congratulations!
Hey, does anybody know how to completely remove the windshield frame? Any help would be highly appreciated
