  • After a question by one of my subscribers, I decided to do an quick video looking at the Paasche H single action airbrush. I look at what comes in the kit version, talk about the the basics of the components, and do a quick spray with some Tamiya paint and a good cleanup.

      @@BrettG64 One more question as I'm about to put in my order. I can only find new sets of the Paasche H that come with 2 plastic bottles, not glass. So I'm planning to buy that set along with six to eight Paasche 1oz glass bottles with gasket & lid and one 1oz glass bottle with cover assembly (with tube attachment and little metal knob at the top). I was thinking of storing mixed paint in the jars with the covers long term, is that a bad idea? Do paints go bad if stored too long in jars, even with lids with gaskets?

    Thanks so much for doing this video. I want to get into making custom fishing lures. I bought a Paasche H Single Action Airbrush way back about30 years ago to do plastic models. I could not figure it out. So it has sat in a closet. I thought of it the other day when i was looking at some. I figured on buying a top feed double action. Last time I used the Paasche, I did not clean it well and it was with oil paints like you use. I thought it has been to long. its shot. And besides its junk. But since I'm living on disability, money is tight. So I thought, maybe for now just try and use the one I have until I can buy a new one. I then just need a air compressor to get started learning to paint with it. But seeing your video I have a better understanding on how it works, and that it is a pretty good airbrush. So thank you for saving me money. And that means I can start sooner.

    Brett, you can unscrew the air release valve. Use your tweezers to unscrew the inner spring assembly then pull out the pin with the tiny O ring and clean things up. I just had to do the same with my HP-CS Eclipse. Just remember the order and field strip like a pistol. Mine does what is happening to yours and most of the time I use an extra small tamiya cotton swab with Lac. thinner and ream the hole out and place a touch of super lube. Thank for the fun video, I have the same Paasche LOL

    I have a Iwata NEO and the button gets stuck too. I suspect it has to do with the O ring or paint getting stuck in there. I've heard of replacing the O rings with a wax but I've never tried it. I have a Bartsharp and a Badger and it works for me. Maybe I'll fiddle with the other one day. This was a really great overview of this airbrush. I've never even thought to get a single action, but I can see where it would come in handy. Also there is something about an airbrush being made in the USA, they feel different to me.. In a good way, like heavier or more unique somehow. Thanks Brett.

    To clean the paint pipe from the paint cup to the Pasche H I use a piece of plastic weed trimmer line and run it down through the idiotic curved tube they use. It is difficult to get a pipe cleaner to go down the tube. The trimmer line also will go through the pain nozzle to the opening in the paint, nozzle, which can be brushed out of the opening with a paint brush to remove paint. To deep clean the brush, I used MEK. My Primer will not come out with ordinary solvents such as lacquer thinner shown in this video but MEK will clean it out. I really clean it out every 3 or 4 uses when painting a model train or I begin to get paint chunks from the paint bottle spraying onto the model. I get beautiful paint jobs this way with craft acrylics and 123 Zinser Bullseye Primer which will NOT come off except with MEK. Windex and Pledge Floor Shine makes a great thinner for top notch paint jobs. The floor shine give a semigloss shine to the finish and is acrylic. Everything is water or alcohol soluble.

    I have been using a generic double action bottle airbrush for my base paints, being double action it’s prone to dry paint on the needle and inside the nozzle causing spraying issues, so you need to spray a bottle of cleaner through, every half bottle of paint, doable but a PITA.
    In comes the Single Action Paasche H, since the paint is atomized outside the Airbrush, you can paint much, much longer, and it’s very easy to clean, my only issue is, it doesn’t atomize the paint as fine as a double action does.

    The 1/4 inch NPT quick-release you said goes on airbrush, I think you meant to say compressor or, more specifically the female quick-release fitting of the air hose coming from the compressor or water trap. It is the common fitting most found on larger compressors and not so much on smaller hobby compressors. With that said, thank you for the video. The instruction manual lacks your great explanation of the lines on the parts to indicate sizes. I had just received my air brush and searched out a video and found yours. Thanks again

    • @BrettG64
      @BrettG64  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comments! In my case the 1/4” fittings are connecting the air hose to a CO2 cylinder via the regulator. And I’m glad you like the description of the lined parts. I don’t know if I’ve ever found an actual measurement on those nozzles. Which is weird because that’s the way most people like to know what size they are

I mostly do tanks & some aircraft.. getting sick of rattle cans. Amazon has a "Master 1/5 hp Cool Runner II" (model # MAS TC-320) with a Passche H set like you have for under $180. Is this worth it for starting out or should I look elsewhere for a compressor separately? I noticed you said a moisture trap is important which it has.. Thank you for such a comprehensive, great review👍😊✌️
    Can I ask; what sort of pressures do you work at with acrylics please, is it 12-15psi (under 20psi)?🤔🤞👍😊
    I'm tired of variable quality rattle cans ruining my work. I've four nice DA airbrushes, but due to health and coordination issues (a work in progress - Im hopeful of rehabilitation), I'm looking for an easy to use, SA, airbrush for quick paint jobs (model making is mostly therapeutic and I want to keep it that way). I've been looking at the; Badger 200, Paasche SI, Paasche F and Paasche H for this kind of work. I have Sparmax Flyer, it's hoopy, works well, but is only good at - relatively - higher pressures, so indoor, small work, priming, base coats with my small desk top diaphragm compressor is a no, no.
    On your H the clean up was very easy, that's a big consideration for me too.
    Some love and some hate the H, but it's a horse's for courses airbrush, of ancient, but reliable, design and really does what it says on the tin, I think if one bears that in mind then all is well in the world?🤔🤔🤞👍✌️😉😊
    I'm glad that you're enjoying it👍😊✌️

      Thanks for the comments. As for pressure, I usually spray about that range... 12-15 psi. I actually haven't used it in awhile, but I am probably going to get it out again for heavier stuff like primers and such. I have recently retired the last of my water based acrylics for lacquers, so more of my work is on the finer side now.

Only question I have now, Paasch had two models of this gun, H and HS. The H (like you have) uses a push on bottle and the HS has a nut that tightens to keep it from falling off. Do you see a need for it? Thanks.

I'll mainly be using the little paint cup because I'm painting tiny models, and since I'm lefthanded I wonder if the cup will make it awkward to hold? I just checked and it shouldn't be a problem as far as grip goes. I am right-handed, so I held the brush like I do when I spray. I switched to left hand and used the same hold. No interference at all. You might have to tilt the brush ever so slightly toward you to check your paint level in the cup, but other than that, it should be easy to use.

      Sorry for the delay in answering. The fitting on the end of the hose that screws onto the bottom of the airbrush has a rubber seal inside to give an airtight connection. I can't remember what I show in the video, but the airbrush has a quick connector attached to it now, so I can change airbrushes quickly if I need to. The quick release adapter has a seal inside that is similar to the fitting on the hose.

    • @BrettG64

      Yes. The one end fo the hose is threaded to work with a hose to compressor fitting. I think its a 1/4" pipe thread. So you can use a regular quick release type fitting for the compressor end.

      @@jhoodfysh No problem John!
      As for cleaning, I use Medea brand acrylic cleaner quite a bit now, especially on water based acrylics. It seems to work pretty well on Tamiya acrylics as well, so far. It can be purchased at Hobby Lobby if you have one near you. A decent sized spray type bottle lasts for quite awhile. I have also used UMP brand cleaner and it works really well, but I have to get that online. Usually if you get a certain brand of paint their cleaner is usually available as well, but not as cost effective as something like the ones I mentioned.

      My hose has the small fitting to attach to the airbrush itself, and the larger (1/4" female NPT, National Pipe Thread) on the end that connects to the quick release fitting for the compressor.

      @@BrettG64 Good to know. My air hose has a quick connect on it and im buying a adapter to screw on the airbrush then screw on a inline water trap then the air hose screws on to the water trap. I will be mainly using this airbrush for lacquer paints. Look up MCW finishes on youtube he shows that he sprayed the back of a plastic spoon with no sanding or primer and after 15 minutes or so it was dry and he took very tacky duck tape lol to mask it and spray yellow on the top part of the spoon and when i was watching i said most of that black paint will come right off when he takes it off and to my shock NO paint came off that spoon at all and he put the duck tape back on the black 2 more times and still NO paint came off. MCW Lacquer is now my main paints. No sanding your plastic model no more primer just paint your plastic model car PLUS you know how if you put Tamiya glue on that paint and the paint comes right off well he put that glue on that paint and NO paint came off. Best paint i have found AND its already thinned ready for the airbrush. It don't get better than that.

    • @BrettG64
      @BrettG64  4 роки тому

      Hello, Aashik. I'm not sure what kind to recommend since I don't use one. I use a compressed CO2 cylinder for my airbrush. However, the least expensive compressors as far as I know, are the tankless type. They are pretty small, but depending on the brand they can be kind of noisy. And if you have the Paasche airbrush like I show in the video, pretty much all compressors will cost more, unfortunately.

    You seem to be missing the air control screw that controls air volume? Mine has one. For better balance, I filled the handle with lead pallets. I replaced the set screw with a thumb screw. Much easier to use when changing the sizes. No pesky Allen wrench to mess with.

    • @BrettG64
      @BrettG64  Рік тому

      Good tip on the replacement of the Allen screw. As for the air control screw... not familiar with that. I actually haven't used this airbrush in awhile, but have considered getting it out again.

    • @davidlang4442
      @davidlang4442 Рік тому

      @@BrettG64 That air control screw is adjustable up or down to aid in how much air that can be put through the brush. It is adjacent to the air button and partly under it so you can only add as much air through the brush as needed by controlling how far down you can push the air valve, full open or somewhere in its travel.. Gives better control of the amount of air rather then with just adjusting the regulator at the air tank. You get the same pressure but less of it at the tip. Does that make sense? Not sure why yours doesn't have one. My gun is 40 years old. Maybe the maker decided it was redundant and dropped it on later additions. As for me, I find it very useful. It effects atomization of the paint. By the way, what do you do with all those finished models?

      Actually, there is. I've seen them online, but don't remember where. I have two outlets on my CO2 rig so I can just have two plugged in at the same time, so I haven't really looked again. When I do some refining in my hobby room, I am going to be rethinking that though and will most likely locate an adapter, so I can neaten things up a bit.

      Would acetone work to clean it, or is it too harsh? Would something like rubbing alcohol be better?

    • @BrettG64
      @BrettG64  3 роки тому

      I am not necessarily making a recommendation, but personally I prefer Tamiya paints. They spray really well, they are easy to thin and the odor/fumes aren't too bad if their acrylic thinner is used. It is very easy to clean up and very forgiving. For cleaning up the airnrush after using Tamiya paint, I use inexpensive hardware store lacquer thinner. I have a video showing how I do a tear down and cleanup of my Iwata airbrush. Different airbrush, but I use the same methods and cleaner for my Paasche H.

      I have found it to be safe. The place I take mine to do exchanges when its empty have to do periodic inspections and tests to ensure the tanks are safe. As far as cost, I already had the tank. To exchange for a full tank coss around $20.00 US. The regulator was $80.00 US then the fittings/adapters to connect to the airbrush hose are another approx $20.00.

      I've seen that one myself. Although the main body is plastic, compared to the metal body of the one I reviewed, the nozzle/tip part (which is the part that really matters) is exactly the same, so a person would get the same results. The one you show, Phantom, would be a great set to get started with since it comes with all of those extras.
