Is the 2021 I-Pace good enough to lead Jaguar to 'EV only' by 2025 ?! [Road Test]

  • Car manufacturers often make bold claims and bold statements, but saying you will only make electric vehicles from 2025 when you currently only make one is pretty bold. Thanks to Harwoods Jaguar Chichester, I spent a couple of days with the latest Jaguar I-Pace. The simple question is...is it good enough to take Jaguar on that journey ?

    I agree with your overall enthusiasm for the iPace. I’ve had mine fir two years and absolutely love it. My previous cars have been a Porsche Boxster, a Porsche 911 (997) C4S and a Porsche 911 (996) Turbo . The iPace is just as much fun to drive as the Porsche sports cars and it’s far easier to get in and out of and far more practical as a daily driver. I get 420 km range only needing to charge it once a week on my 7kw home charger that takes about 8 hours. For a long trip there is absolutely nothing wrong with stopping for half an hour for coffee & lunch whilst getting a 40 to 80% charge in half an hour on a 50kw public charger. Do yourself a favor and buy that iPace you love, it’s a fantastic car, you won’t regret it!! Cheers Martin Rees New Zealand

      Thanks much for this comment. I know it's from three years ago, but we are looking to purchase a 2019 or 2020 I-Pace and live in the Pacific Northwest in the USA where there are quite a lot of places to charge if we set out on a road trip. Our current EV, an older Nissan Leaf has a much smaller range and it's more than adequate for in the city (Seattle), with a 5-6 times greater range, the I-Pace should be more than enough for us.
      We will not even consider a Tesla because Elon Musk is such a menace, interfering in elections to help Donald Trump. Driving a Tesla these days where we live is super embarrassing. People are putting stickers on their cars to explain that they didn't know how bad Elon Musk was when they bought their cars.

      @@StrifeNinja I sold the car 2 months ago, not because of any major problems, but every 5 years I get the urge to change the wife or car and it is cheaper to change the car. The car cost £70k and I sold it for just under £19k and I did have a concern that it would have zero value when the manufactures' battery warranty runs out. One thing to look out for is the front windscreen bonding becomes loose and can let in water. Jaguar originally claimed the car was out of warranty but when I pointed out this was a regular problem that was not wear and tear but an underlying fault, they agreed to change it free of charge. One big problem is that if the batteries do fail, you can, I am told wait ages for replacement cells
      Overall great car to drive, but it depends on your risk profile

This car looked really nice and convenient and I was looking to buy a second hand used one however the issues you mentioned has me a little worried as I am looking for something reliable. I absolutely love the Jaguar I-Pace and it is defiantly my favorite EV on the market today. I've test driven a lot of EV over the last few years including the Ford Mach-e and the Tesla X and none of them give me the joy of driving a "Performance inspired" EV like the I-pace. When we can start hosting Supercar Experience days again, I couldn’t use the Jag, as it would add 2hrs to my drive home from some events.

    A good video Ped. I’d like to address the range thing from my perspective as a driver trainer.
    The journey from Chichester to Cornwall is a long one with few fast roads and a lot of tourist traffic at times. As a Portsmouth resident I’ve done the journey to Devon a few times in an EV. Any driver doing this journey should take a short break. The Highway Code rule 91 says 15 minutes every two hours. If I was doing a fleet assessment on a driver who said they were doing 4 to 6 hour plus journeys without stopping my report would reflect discussions we’d have around it and if they said their boss made them do it the report would be worded to make their boss realise how irresponsible they’re being.
    OK you might say I’m being pedantic but this is how roads should safely be used. On your journey to Cornwall you wouldn’t run the iPace almost flat then look for a charger to fill it right up again. You just need to stop somewhere on the way for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the charger, to add another 50 to 80 miles. If you did this when the battery was about half full you’d get a lot of charge quickly. There must be times you need a quick loo break, or am I thinking like the middle aged man I am. You’d also pass dozens of rapid chargers on the way. Do you have a charger at your house in Cornwall as well?
    If you love the iPace and all that stops you getting one is having to stop for 15 minutes on occasional journeys you are missing out on ownership of a very nice car. We saw the smile on your face along the B road.
    Another thought on fuel tax. Have a look at the costs to the NHS of the affects of traffic pollution. There are various reports. One found about £9billion a year. One put the cost per car in London at £8,000 in its lifetime. Plus the costs to the taxpayer of decommission the North Sea infrastructure which the oil companies made the money using. The £27 billion a year fuel duty would not be missed if we didn’t have these costs. But it’s great for the government to have everyone thinking how will they replace fuel tax. It means we easily accept new taxes like road pricing.

    Driving 3.5 hours non-stop isn’t recommended from a health point of view. Although I’m no doctor! If you stopped for 20 mins for a leg stretch, a wee and to reload on Yorkshire Tea, you could charge an I-Pace enough to get to your holiday home in beautiful Cornwall.

    - it has heads up display which can show everything except range left in battery
    - steering wheel adjustment still manual, but seats/mirrors ARE electric/memory based, so when a diff driver gets in (which is the main point of having memory based settings) they still have to adjust the steering wheel manually
    - heated steering wheel temp is fixed and almost scalds your hands after 5 mins
    - no visible indication your cars charging once you lock it
    - when you select drive mode you dont know what mode you're in since its not displayed anywhere
    - no wireless charging on my 'high spec' model

    I drive a BMW i3s and the most the GoM has ever stated as range is 226 miles on a warm day last summer, mostly it sits at about 160-170 miles. Mostly use it for journeys within 50ish miles from home. But we did travel down to Cornwall last summer with the mutt. Stopped twice, once for a bladder and coffee break and again for the mutt. Arrived with 30% charge. Both stops were about 30 mins. I do get the argument for 300+ miles but in reality, ~200 is liveable for most people most of the time and also keeps the purchase price down. iPace is a really bold Ian Callum design classic & would certainly fit our usage when the i3s is changed

    Excellent assessment of the 2021 model. I owned a 2019 HSA throughout 2020 and agree with all the points you make (except in relation to the infotainment system which was nowhere near as good as it is in the latest model).
    I sold the I-Pace because of the range limitations, as you rightly point out, and the dire public charging infrastructure which you have highlighted in previous reviews. Don’t even get me started on Ecotricity, although InstaVolt gets top marks. I sold the Jaguar and bought a Model 3 Long Range which addresses my two main problems, range and charging. Incidentally, as you know, the M3 is considerably more efficient than the I-Pace which is a real watt-guzzler. I was using 360 watt/hours per mile with the I-Pace while the M3 (on a smaller battery) gets its 300+ range because it do a mile on under 250 W/h. It is much cheaper to run, especially with my overnight Octopus rate of 5p per unit and the greater range (which means using less of the expensive public energy). Over the course of a year this is a significant saving, not that my primary consideration has ever been cost saving to that extent. It’s nice to have, though.
    The Model 3 is a very different car, of course, and belongs to a cheaper price range than the HSE. The Jaguar is probably better built and has more of an aura of luxury. But the Tesla is remarkably well equipped with driver aids (better than the Jaguar) and I do not feel short changed having made the swap. I am revelling in the minimalism compared with the compromise layout of the Jaguar’s controls. Incidentally, I considered all the other high-end EVs (including Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Polestar) but share the Jaguar’s major problem of not having access to a grown-up charger network. As an all rounder, I feel happier with the Tesla. We’ll have to see how I feel after a year...

    I have a 2020 iPace that I think is absolutely brilliant in most respects.
    The two key downsides are the range and charging infrastructure, which are both covered here. However, the Jaguar does have trouble charging at sites where others can charge without a problem, so it's not all down to the infrastructure. The charging infrastructure is rapidly being upgraded so I'm less concerned about that. The only real problem I have had was around the very North of Scotland where there's next to no functioning rapid chargers.
    The range on the iPace is poor when compared to other vehicles though. It appears to chew threw the electricity much faster than other cars with a similar sized battery, so needs to get more efficient. Getting more efficient means the range improves or the price drops, both good things.
    Hopefully by the time I come to get my next car, probably 2023, then there will be more options out there to choose from with a good range and price point.

    The reason internal combustion took over from electric cars at the start, was because the business model of replacement parts was greater than electric and a monopoly was created - there is a larger industry at risk of electric cars and that’s the local garage

    • @wadehampton4499
      @wadehampton4499 3 роки тому +2

      Absolutely ! I haven't seen much comment about this very important aspect of the "dash for electric" At a stroke, pure EV's do away with much of the attendant complications of ICE vehicles (gearboxes/clutches/cooling systems/radiators) plus many more which have traditionally kept many local garages in business. It will be manageable as long as we wean ourselves off the ICE slowly, this will give businesses time to re-focus, re-train staff etc. Mad talk about "banning" this and that will cause massive uncertainty and give rise to significant unemployment.

    • @DaveBarnes1
      @DaveBarnes1 3 роки тому +4

      I understand the concern, but there's no putting the cat back in the bag once it's out.
      The simplicity of the electric drive train means a much simpler vehicle to maintain, though tyres, suspension and to some extent the brakes are still the same. But the mechanics element has gone. Smart thinking garages will change soon to electric servicing, but the volume will be considerably less than the current model.
      The other thing to consider is the sales model with Tesla in particular and a number of other big manufacturers sidestepping the dealerships and selling direct to the public. We are likely to end up in a different place than we are in today, probably with a different model of ownership than we have today too.

      I’ve had a couple of Leafs now. My last service on a one year old car cost £159 at the Nissan dealer. The only part needed was a pollen filter. The rest was visual inspection. At £159 that’s an expensive service for what’s done. As it’s probably only going to need a pollen filter every year and brake fluid change every other year that’s a lot of revenue lost by garages. The first major thing Leafs tend to need is a good brake service at 100,000 miles. Not because the brakes are worn but because they corrode due to the regenerative braking doing all the stopping.

      My car is my driving school car as well as personal transport. To be fair to Nissan the service includes a year of free recovery service. Because the car has a dual control for business use recovery companies say it has to have business recovery service, they costs a lot more. Nissan say the car is covered for recovery.
      In reality I don’t mind the service costs. They’re so much less than fossil cars were, with the vehicle recovery, stamp in the service book and maintaining the warranty it’s good value for a business relying on the car for income and reputation. This is very relaxing and now part of the journey as I can break the journey to check out the shops and cafe's (for lunch) which i now call part of the journey. As an ipace real world owner I can attest that the range is not a problem. A 230 mile trip will involve some motorway but also some other motoring to and from. You are looking at 4+ hours of driving. A comfort break will add the range needed. A meal break will give a fill up. Unlike a petrol stop, you dońt need to stay with the pump. Just plug in and go do whatever. How often do we check our phones these days? Spend 10 minutes to stretch legs, etc and 10 minutes catching up on the phone and you’re off. There are wonderful apps to map routes and keep informed about charging availability, amenities, etc. You have to experience it to understand EV driving.

    • @j.williamkay2771
      @j.williamkay2771 2 роки тому

      Very true! We have to stop to stretch both our, and our dogs’, legs before the battery is empty; and a coffee break is plenty to top up the range for the next leg. We’ve driven further and further since getting the car autumn 2019, and have a 5000km European road trip lined up this summer.

    When they get the range to 300 miles people will complain its not 400 miles, then 500 miles & so on, really, in day to day driving how often do most people drive 200 miles in one hit without having access to a power supply either at work or home. I think cost is more of an obstacle than range for the average household.

    In my mind the I-Pace will be perfect for a trip to Cornwall, wish i could afford one. I usually leave London about 4am and drive until I find a place for breakfast and toilet break (my bladder is not cast iron like yours as you can do the trip without stopping), ideal time to charge to make it with plenty of range. Now, if I was doing a 125 mile round trip in one day then I'd also want a car with more range as i wouldn't want to charge on this kind of trip (but it won't stop me getting an I-Pace if i could afford it)

  • @Hitstirrer

    A 230 miles trip to Cornwall is a 4 hours minimum journey and most people quite like a comfort stop halfway for a coffee and loo visit. A 15 minute charge there will be enough to allow an i-pace to complete that trip with ease and not cause any overall journey delay. People don't need a longer EV range once they realise that they already do a mid journey stop in their ICE cars. And the car re-fuels as you drink coffee and eat a muffin.

Also it's let me down on an almost weekly basis which is simply. not good enough for a car of this price point (mine lists at £77k but is through a salary sacrifice scheme) and if I was paying anywhere near the £1000 or so a month finance figures you'd pay to walk into a dealer and buy one I'd have returned the car months ago. The psychology at work here interests me. Running a petrol-powered car in the winter, I think nothing of running two heated seats and heated steering wheel all the time. The power comes from a source which is replenished by the same unit which moves it down the road. But with EVs, would I be trying to go without, to compromise on heat in order to get max range. Possibly. And £80k or whatever to then have to compromise?
    I fully expect the UK Gov in the next couple of years to announce that they’re moving the goalposts (witness the Tesla owners with older houses who are already reporting issues with their house wiring) when it becomes clear (and it will) that 2030 isn’t achievable and it risks becoming a political issue. And where that leaves Jaguar if they commit fully, I don’t know...
    Bear in mind that if the Gov DON’T sort the infrastructure, then critical mass won’t be achieved because people won’t buy EVs. And the whole thing will unravel.

      Thanks I enjoy your videos. This is a superb car, only hope they bring out a baby Ipace.
      Would it be much of a problem to stop en-route to Cornwall for maybe a pee and or a cuppa and simply do a splash and dash, a 15minute charge would put in about 30miles which would be more than enough to complete your journey.
      This is from somebody who has a MGZs Ev with around 130mile range. However I agree with a 90kwh battery it ought to do more range.

    How many people actually drive long distances on a regular basis? We have trains and planes. I haven't remote charged my EV in over a year.

    Good review and your view on range would be warranted if it was an issue everyday for work, but for occasional trips a bit further then it is not. If it is a morning start leave without breakfast and stop a few hours to recharge yourself and the car. Also my misses said Mrs PP will soon be wanting more regular stops rather than door to door journey as she gets older 🤫. We moved from a 500mile range Ghibli to the I-Pace, nice not to be smelling of fuel on your shoes from a dirty forecourt.

    For the vast majority of people, the range should not be an issue, because they would be charging it every few days at home from their own charging port. Realistically, apart from a couple of UK holidays a year, this would be easy to live with for me. The UK charging infrastructure is improving daily, so the range anxiety issue should cease to exist over the next couple of years.

    We love our i-Pace which is all the car we need 95% of the time. Despite what some people say about EV's the i-Pace is really good fun to drive. More range will come over time as technology advances but major improvements are required to get multiple rapid charging stations built on all the main arterial routes. We can make it from north of Glasgow to London with two charge stops (as long as we then get a full overnight charge) but due to faulty (take a bow Ecotricity) or busy chargers we have had to stop up to 5 times and that just becomes a pain. It also eats up 4 hours or more which is not good enough.

    I was very much going doing the Tesla route to replace a range rover had reservations around build quality and finding an affordable replacement with comparable features to a RR L405 SE. The I-Pace seems to be a more closer match. The range may be an issue living in Cornwall it's a long way to visit family up in the lakes. I will be wandering over to the local dealers this weekend. Brilliant and useful review.

    Nice spec and love that you didn’t edit out the child lock part! That was funny and oh so easy to do. 👍🏻🍻🇨🇦
