Jaguar I-Pace - Does this electric cat still have claws?

  • This is not a new car. In fact, the Jaguar I-Pace is really getting on a bit in terms of electric cars, now being five years old. But Jaguar are planning on an all-electric future from 2025 onwards, despite still only having the I-Pace in its ageing range. The question is, however, does the I-Pace still cut it in it's market place, or is it a bit of a "has-been". In this week's episode, Bryan takes one on a proper road trip to Scotland to deliver the only verdict that matters to actual EV buyers - the AutoEV one.
AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

I have a 2019 SE I-Pace and it recently went pop due to a known problem. It will show up with a message "gearbox fault detected". It will eventually fail. It's a massive job to repair and I was very worried. However there is a recall for this which Jaguar will repair under warranty due to the safety aspect. The fault is caused by the wiring to the park brake actuator cabling becoming detached due to movement of the forward motor. Any owners or potential owners should be aware of this. It affects 2019-2020 cars. Apart from that it is a stunning car.

Thanks once again for a great review. I've owned my se black edition for just shy of a year now. Having watched your first review I test drove the Ipace at my local Jaguar dealer in Sidcup ,they were just about to change their demonstration Jaguar and offered it to me .They gave me £3,500 off the car plus a free podpoint home charger and a years free subscription to BP pulse. Driving the Ipace is like riding on a magic carpet, I haven't had this much fun since I gave up riding my superbike. The car just eats corners up at speed and is very safe.Mostley though I drive it in eco mode with full regen.

I bought a 2019 I-Pace after watching your EV6 comparison and a load of other reviews. Used prices are fantastic at the moment! For less than £30k I've got a beautiful, well-equipped and comfortable car, which is indistinguishable from a new one.

I’ve owned my I-Pace HSE, for just 6 months now having waited almost a year for delivery and it still makes me smile every time I climb in and drive it. A beautiful looking car, really well equipped with amazing performance that doesn’t disappoint. Sure, charging could be better which hopefully will be addressed in the facelift but for me that’s a minor issue as I’ve a home charger which covers my needs fully. I hope that Jaguar build on the foundations of the I-Pace for their move to 100% EV and don’t miss out on it’s greatness. I’m sad that there aren’t as many on the roads as there should be but it does then mean you’re part of a relatively exclusive group. Thanks for the review, you said it all.

I purchased an I-Pace HSE in late 2018 and kept the car for almost 4 years. Agree that the car looks great and it drives really well. The build quality also feels very solid. The functional let downs are the slow charging speed and the first generation infotainment system. The real issue is that Jaguar is not providing continuous updates to the car. Other EV brands are improving the cars on an ongoing basis.
I have moved on to a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo which is absolutely fantastic, albeit at almost twice the price of the I-Pace.
The I-Pace is great used EV, particularly since the prices are very low, at least here in Norway.

Thanks for this very comprehensive review about the I-PACE vis a vis its competitors that have emerged since. Well done!
I bought my HSE in January, 2019 and like a few others here consider it perhaps the best car I have ever owned. Simply outstanding in all respects! Not the least of which is something that may be taken for granted by viewers of your channel: There is simply no comparison between the performance characteristics of an EV to an ICE vehicle. Straight up. Flat out. And I have had my share of outstanding examples of the latter in multiple cars from Lotus, Alfa Romeo and BMW. I will never go back.
The one thing I did got hooked on from those performance ICE cars was their phenomenal handing, in particular with (you guessed it!) cars made by Lotus. So I really appreciated your comments about the unsung geniuses who design the systems that enable a real driver’s experience. Among other things, this is why I haven’t considered a car from Tesla. The ones I test drove seemed like shopping carts with very powerful electric motors attached.
All this said, I must register a minor disagreement about you comment on the best wheel size. I purposefully got my car with 20” rather than 22” wheels because of both bad experiences on other cars with 22” wheels and repair/replacement costs after I hit a pothole, and lack of perceived benefit to performance vs. too-bumpy a ride with the 22s. My 20s work just fine!

    Hi Bryan,
I owned an I-Pace HSE for just over three years, and apart from the 'relaxed response' from the infotainment system on occasion, I never had a single problem with mine.
Unfortunately, due to being effed-over by my bank when I was buying a property, I had to sell it to raise money - something I still regret over six months later.
However, seeing what's happening with Jaguar since Bolloré was put in charge, I've been reticent to buy another. Yes the I-Pace is a stunning-looking vehicle and has all the desirable qualities you mention in your video (Grace, Space & Pace abound), but it's the direction JLR is taking Jaguar which stopped me buying another. Cancelling the XJ-E when it was production-ready rang alarm bells, and the current management is seemingly focussed solely on Land Rover, to the detriment of Jaguar.
The problem is exactly as you identified; the only other option to the I-Pace is the Taycan cross-tourismo, but that's sadly out of my budget.
I toyed with the idea of buying a cheap Chinese EV to 'tide me over', but the significant problems BYD owners are having (and many, many broken promises) and the utter lack of response from MG Australia, and it's dealers, turned me off. Add to that the parlous relationship with China in general and I soon drooped the idea.
The Polestar 2 was looking very promising for a while, but while it has an attractive entry-price, by the time you add the two-pack-minimum upgrades (the car's no good without both), it quickly becomes overpriced for what is nothing more than a badge-engineered Geely. Similar situation with the Volvo XC-60.
Following your excellent review, I pursued a Mercedes EQ-A, but my local dealer was thoroughly uninterested in selling me an EV, and MB Australia just referred me back to the same Dealer, so they didn't get my money.
I do love the BMW i4, but nine months on I'm still waiting for a test drive... And there's no stock.
After that, there's not much to choose from.
So really, it once again comes back to the I-pace, but it's obvious JLR have no interest in the car; while the interior is lovely, the centre-stack is ugly AF - too much polished aluminium, which borders on being tacky, and personally I don't like the gap between the drive and mode select buttons, it would be better as a 'floating' stack - far better if if was all toned-down and simplified.
Almost all the other vehicles in JLR's stable received an interior refresh - the I-Pace should have received one too, along the lines of the F-Pace or one of the Range Rover models.
Ultimately it's the lack of investment / interest in Jaguar from JLR that had kept me from buying another I-Pace; I think Bolloré has got it wrong, and I fear Jaguar as a brand won't be around in ten year, or it will have been sold off...
...oh, and the post-sales support from Jaguar Australia is abysmal.
    Cheers.

    • @AutoEV
      @AutoEV  Рік тому +2

Good to hear from you again, and obviously, thank you for continuing to watch and support the channel.
Absolutely agree with you on the JLR situation. It's what I alluded to in the video (and was actually one of the ideas that I had for a video - "What is going at Jaguar???") and we have mentioned before how disappointed we were at AutoEV that the new XJ - E was canned. That could have had such an advantage over the EQS and new i7, but sadly it wasn't to be. I think you have a point about the emphasis being on the LR part of JLR as that is making money, so its easier to concentrate on that and hope the Jaguar problem sorts itself out, which of course it won't without serious investment and some big, bold decisions (like the I-Pace was!).
Australia does seem to be a very difficult market for EVs with few manufacturers taking an interest in them down there, which is a real shame as there are some fabulous cars. I have a friend who works in the industry down there and he imported a Honda e for himself as he loved the car so much, but it's not brought in by Honda officially for some reason.
Anyway, hopefully you get yourself sorted with something soon, and again, great to hear from you and that you still enjoy the channel!
      Bryan

I own a First Edition HSE. I bought it used in late 2021 and it now has around 35k miles. It’’s not perfect but I would concur that of all the cars I’ve owned it’s my favorite. I wanted a vehicle that was attractive, sporty and fun to drive, had AWD, and could carry stuff like skis or a surfboard. This fits the bill perfectly.
It’s curious to me that it gets largely ignored by the motoring press in the US, because I think it’s still competitive. Objections typically center on appearance, range, charging speed and reliability. Here is my take:
Appearance is subjective. I agree with you that this Ian Callum design is stunning and ageless. To me it resembles a kind of hatchback sedan variant of the C-X75. It makes me happy every time I see one. But others disagree and actually prefer more trucklike two-box SUVs with higher rooflines. Perhaps the fact that as you allude to it’s neither fish nor fowl, not really an SUV nor a sedan, is what makes it polarizing.
Range is clearly limited but the delta is not as significant as we hear. While it’s true that it ‘ have the range of certain other cars, notably Tesla or Lucid, it’s really not far off from many newer cars such as the Mach E, e-tron, or Ioniq 5/EV6 offerings. After four years my estimated range is still around 240mi, which really means a practical real world range of around 200. As with any EV it’s affected by speed and temperature, but I did read somewhere that cold weather impact on range varies by car and the iPace is among the least affected. My experience seems to back this up, although that is anecdotal.
Charging speed is definitely on the low end, particularly in the case of an early model like mine. But for me, and this is purely subjective, unless I can refuel in 5 minutes, the difference between a 20 min stop and a 30-35 min one isn’t really meaningful. I stop, get out, walk around, grab a snack, and have gone from 20% to 80% quite quickly. And the charging curve seems fairly linear; on those times when I’ve needed to go to almost a full charge I haven’t observed a big drop-off in speed for that last 15-20%.
As for reliability, a quick check of the owner forums will reveal a lot of people who love this car, but some who have had unfortunate experiences. I gather this is the case with other cars as well. Seems lemons do exist. And there are some known issues with the 12 volt battery (or batteries in pre-20 models). For me, knock on wood, other than a headlight bulb the car has been bulletproof. I park it for a week, come back from a trip and even if it’s covered in snow, it fires right up.
My only concern is longevity. I like this thing so much I’d really be happy to hold onto it for many years and lots of miles. Given what others have pointed out is a lack of emphasis by JLR, I worry that it’ll be orphaned. My hope is that they’ll stay in business, continue to support it with parts availability, and someday someone will produce an aftermarket traction battery that bumps range up to 400 miles. Then it’d be perfect!

My friend struggles to get over 2 miles per kwh out of his ipace. My bigger, heavier BMW iX is averaging 3.1 miles per kwh in the 10k miles since new!
The ix also charges faster and actually has a better spec at a slightly lower price when I compared prior to purchase.
Admittedly the ipace looks amazing still though.

You've made me re-evaluate the I-pace. The only thing I thought when it was mentioned in passing, was how horrendously inefficient it is. This is important, nay, very important, to me, but so is driving quality, and with so few cars where they ought to be on that score, perhaps I should forgive it for dropping electrons down the drain (or whatever happens to them) and give one a go. Thanks, you really test cars thoroughly and completely and get important points across that are missed by others.

Its had over the air updates in the 3 months I've owned my '22, and now has a 262 range (which is fine for 99% of my drives), but the '24 now has 292 miles on the same battery unit, so I expect this to be basically a 300 mi range car when my next update is sent. This is unsurpassed by any Tesla as far as function & form, and the build quality is way better than any Korean EV on the market. 90Kw battery pack will eventually be tweaked to 350 range. Again, most people don't need 100 miles a day, let alone 300. And when you consider all the advantages over maintenance and gas stations for a gas car, its fantastic. I wake up every day with a charged car and whiz past gas stations and repair shops. Peace.

I was seriously looking at the Ipace back in mid 2020 but they wanted to sell me a 2019. I ended up purchasing a 2020 Tesla Y performance. I still find the exterior design pristine. The other issue was the under seats bump that interfered with my legs. I wonder how the software evolved since. It seemed to me this was one of its shortcomings besides the slow DC charging. Looking forward to the 2024 refresh.

I was one of the first ppl to buy one in 2018 in the USA. I had HSE First Edition. the I pace SUV was amazing and I loved the car when it worked. noticed I say when it worked. Mine was Lemon. In the first 3 years I owned the car was in dealership garage for 9 months in total in several visits. the battery was changed twice, the car left me stranded several times far away from home. Jaguar always paid to have the car brought home free of charge, but the issue, they Jaguar did not know how to fix it and I had it fixed at 3 different dealerships. On the 3rd year I had enough and sold the car and got a Tesla. My Tesla is 2.5 years old, never once had an issue or had to take car to the dealer. I'm not sure will ever buy an Ipace after experience with a Tesla.

Great review, I'm considering the I-Pace here in Holland, it has a lot going for it. I can understand why the Brits (such as Jaguar) are considering going up market. Over here Jaguar is already considered a luxury Brand. The level of subsidies supporting Chinese and US EV builders is allowing them to keep prices artificially low. Germany is already feeling the impact of this and companies here that supply them are too. Parts and component costs will continue to be an issue in this sector. However for British Brands they are better able to appeal to those looking for something different, special or aspirational.

Torque vectoring only really applies when under hard acceleration, as it’s a way of dealing with the distribution of torque between the wheels. It amazes me that you are comparing a car i paid 35k for to cars north of 100K and whilst it may not beat them, it can given them a decent fight. The EV6 is a nice looking car... but my logic is price for price, you are comparing an almost new car, with a car which has already lost 50% of its value if looking at a 2-3 year old ipace... and with that in mind i think the jag may now hold its value better than an almost brand new EV6. .... The Ford Mach E was another car similar practicality and price for a few years old model... but the looks of them do nothing for me at all.....

I could spend the £30k on a Range Rover or similar and know I'd have a car which would easily last 10 years and still have some value (assuming fuel is still around) Oh for a crystal ball and a glimpse into the future.

Ah yes, Mr Coren. I did wonder when someone would mention him. And it’s no reflection on you for doing so, as many friends and indeed family did bring this article up to me. Let me address this as tactfully as I can. I empathise with his situation completely. To break down in a car in the middle of nowhere with your wife and children in the car is an awful experience. Completely agree.
But let me ask this; if it was a gearbox failure in his F-Pace that caused this situation, would he have been so vocal about it? It suited his rhetoric to criticise an EV as the climate was right for it, especially just as those photos of queuing Tesla’s was there, and the price increase of energy was also in people’s minds. It was the failure of a singular product that caused his issue. If his Samsung TV had failed, would we stop buying Samsung TVs? No.
The charging network takes a bit of getting used to, I admit. And not all of it is great. I had issues with my Scotland trip. But not enough that had made me wish I’d brought my Jeep Grand Cherokee instead, as lovely as it is. You just have to adapt and plan. for me there are some major shortcomings with the ipace, the old issue of not enough range still rings true its epa and wltp are just not achievable in the real world, but when you can get newer evs for less yet more range jaguar tata have been standing still for too long, charging should be a minimum of 22kw ac and now more arrive able to charge at 200kwh constantly in the price bracket, the drive is excellent, but its styling puts it off a number of people, the lack of sun shade is also a big bug for many american and britain, the lack of rear wiper is also a big problem in the land of constant rain, you can't clear a window with areo at 5 mph , americans also complain of lack of rear room for 6ft family members. for me the big bonnet scoop is the deal breaker, it just looks ugly., inside the infotainment is a little lacking and needs a performance boost as well as a better route planner for charging built in, right now its not other european brands but the far east manufactures, such as polestar (who have also recently updated there model with more range and charging) and more and more individuals are turning to korea instead due to the package, jaguar needs more than a tweek it needs a major redesign or it will still be a slow seller

This was enough to put me off as I did not have the same issue with BMW or Mercedes and I decided then that Jaguar is likely to be doomed!

2019 I-Pace prices in the U.S. are fairly reasonable now. I've hear a lot of negative things (just like other European cars) that they all have problems and are expensive to maintain. I don't know why there are those in the U.S. who like to perpetuate such foolishness because an average of annual upkeep of US$750-US$950 is not bad for a vehicle of this class. Of course, there are those here in the U.S. who are still citing the issues the vehicle had when it first came out, totally ignoring the software updates and other minor fixes Jaguar put into the early models that are no longer a concern in the newer models sold here in the U.S. I hate to say it but I think the negative review in the U.S. are originating from Americans who think they're better than everyone else and think they can trash anything made outside the U.S. (I know what I said - I'm American, too - and yet I hate what many of my fellow Americans do. So, I just wanted to say that after seeing your review (the 5 years on), I'm leaning toward buying a 2019 I-Pace with just under 14k miles - it was a leased vehicle for 3 years and then a resale owned vehicle for 2 years by the second owner. I've seen the maintenance records and the two owners did take it to the local dealer for warranty/recall work as needed. So, I'm feeling pretty confident in my decision to buy the one I've seen - and it's about equivalent to the price in the UK coming in at the equivalent of £33k given it's options and the taxes/registration fees over here.

Still the best looking car externally but the dash is mess, a lot of design movement here in the last five years.

iPace prices are seriously cheap used, perhaps that is for a reason. Need to be a brave person to buy one and run it out of warranty.

Great used car, and Jaguar were doing some great deals on pre-owned cars last year with their warranties. Don’t write them off!

@@AutoEV Great review but… Given the pros/ cons and high price, I would like to see you do a full video solely on the Ipace as a used buy. Any chance of that in future?

@@jdavison8551 We looked at it as a used car against the Kia EV6 last year, although it wasn't a full-on used car review like we have done with others focusing solely on the Jaguar. It might be worth a watch though. But thank you for watching this one and taking the time to comment.
