Translator's Notes:
-the line in the first chorus about the good fortune to those who smile is an abbreviation of the Japanese expression 笑う門には福来る which means "good fortune and happiness will come to the home of those who smile"
-the line about the heart mechanized by chance, written as 機会仕掛け, is a play on words with the phrase 機械仕掛け meaning mechanical. They are both read as 'kikai jikake' but in the former's case, the 'kikai' means 'chance' rather than 'machine'.
-those are the two big ones I can remember, but if I recall any more I'll come back and write them down.

I love vocaloid songs; they're always so original and creative and weird and bizarre and unlike anything ordinary I can always expect something strange, insane, deep, sad, etc some other story told!! I'm just saying this abt vocaloid songs in general not necessarily this one
I know, right?! It's why I'm obsessed! also, there's the fact that none of them sound the same at all! If you were to listen to two American songs, they would sound quite alike. But if you were to listen to two vocaloid songs, the chances are that they would sound very different musically from one another!

Or something that follows a formula guaranteed to make at least its cost back if not more. You could probably find something just as unique and good that are american, but you would have to do some digging. Also, cultural differences...
+Claudia Blair plenty of Americans make deep songs, just because they aren't mainstream, doesn't mean they aren't there. If vocaloid was as easily accessible and was targeted/appealed to a western audience, you can bet just as much as creativity would have sprouted up.

Yay another Rin song I don't have and really need to get. She almost sounds like she did in Mairisudame. She sounds great, I love her lower register. And the song really hits home for me too
I think this song is about a girl, who's parents raised her as a boy, and thats how everyone saw her. The parents wanted a perfect boy with perfect grades who everyone loved, so that's how she acted. In the end, when everyone began leaving her, she just gave up and revealed herself as a girl.

Yay for subs :3 These are some pretty thought-provoking lyrics.
As I interpret this song, it's about a student who is kind to everyone and good at studies, but whose real self is getting more and more sick of those around him, gradually growing miserable. The reason he's pushing himself so hard is because of the adults around him. 0:21 is sarcastic, where he is basically saying that his parents, who should've loved him unconditionally, don't like him when he isn't perfect. He is constantly stressade about his marks. 0:57 is also sarcastic, and a part of his act. At 1:53 "someone" is a parent, who thinks pushing him will be good for him in the long run (good grades=a good future). At 2:19 the "angry roars" are referring to the adults' lecturing. Though he consider the other students his annoying competition, he doesn't actually hate them, because they, too, are victims of their respective parents. Furthermore, even though he thought that he had more or less become unable to feel love, he still doesn't want to be left alone, because that isn't who he is at heart. The fact that they're all being pitted against each other (in a war of who will get the best grades) is the "calculated tradgedy" he mentions.
But that's only what I think, personally.

Okay, here's my stupid interpretation:
It's about a perfect student; or so everyone thinks. This PS(Perfect Student) looks like a person who has perfect grades, a perfect life, and everything they have ever wanted. But in reality, all the PS wants is love but the Adults keep saying " no, love is stupid. Good grades are smart" so the kid is just trying to follow the Adults rules. But the PS is getting sick of being the perfect kid, and their "Mask" of perfection is getting so keening to the PS. The PS tries to explain to the Adults, her lecture and Scold the PS for thinking that. So the PS follows the rules again, never minding the pain. But soon someone comes into the PS' life that the PS loves. This person that they love unintentionally inspires them to drop the perfection and force the Adults to understand and feel their pain; basicaly getting revenge for the,selves. They make the Adults follow their rules, making the Adults feel the pain. Which is why it says " How do you like it?" Because they made the Adults feel the same pain. And then the person that the PS loves, loves them back and the PS' mask is finally officialy broken, revealing their tired, sad, depressed and deranged self, that the person still loves. And again, that's why it says " How do you like it?" Because they get revenge and force their "Prisoners" so to speak, to smile and fake happiness, causing them extreme pain. The end. I think this song somehow relates to " Personality Complex" if you think about it.
Oh, and the "Marks" are his grades, which explains to me why it says " Oh, a failing Mark!" As if saying that the PS got a bad grade

The lyrics seem like some mixture of Indulging Idol Syndrome and Lost One's Weeping to me....
I think this song is about a guy who puts up a fake face for everyone, always happy, the forced smile being a mask. He loves everyone, but he'll forget how to love one day probably meaning he would forget the difference between the two different kinds of love. Then he "calculates" marks in his head, which is the "falling part" meaning he soon breaks down. "It's thrilling to be on the brink of collapse." He then forgets how to rest, and it feels like crunching/rattling which probably means he's over thinking. He hears everyone's complaints/gossip but he doesn't want to be left alone. A villain desires love but heroes don't since they got all the love they need. He doesn't believe in good fortune or miracles because of well, whatever the hell happened to him pfft. (Probably something about adults and their ways of controlling.)
Yeah I really don't know. That's just my interpretation though.

ChocobitzXD Accomplice (Conspirators) is really good, yes, and has better lyrics in my opinion, but...argh, now that you mention it, it's kinda hard to choose between them. Well, whatever, Rin sounds great here, that much I know. ^^

I have been listening to this song for years now, but I never realized how good the tuning is.
Am I the only one who feels like he's a really bad student? It really seems to be saying that, rather than him being a good student... And the mask is that he's a happy, friendly person and doesn't care that he fails no matter how hard he tries.("great efforts aren't rewarded by anything"). Idk about, like, the plot in general but I don't understand why everybody seems to be saying he's the best in the class. And his classmates look down on him because of his bad grades. Also, I seem to be the only one who thinks that it kinda seems like he /wants/ to stop feeling, as well. The bits about forgetting how to smile and love, they seem to be saying that that's what he's hoping will happen. Possibly because then he won't be hurt anymore.
It seems like he may be having bad grades because of his emotional turmoil, but keeping up the act, and he refuses to stop because showing emotion doesn't bring much good as far as the public goes. He seems to be faking emotion while suppressing it all, and he's actually forgetting what it all feels like as it's driving him toward the edge... which is why the song talks about how being at your limit is thrilling.. stuff like that.
It seems to me:
Its about a boy that as a kid probably wanted to be the top of his class or the most popular. He starts to fall into depression, but because he didn't want to bother anyone he put on a "mask" to cover it up. There are times when he worries that covering up his emotions will make him lose them "I'll forget how to smile along the way". He covers up these doubts with studying "An equation on the abacus, connections rattle and clatter." (He loses the connection between faking a smile and losing a smile because he is focused on his studies) From that point he tried to get top "marks" and be a teacher's pet. The line "and how about you?" I feel like it was a class conversation where students were talking about their grades and when they asked his he had a high grade. That's when the other students made fun of him, because he was getting favored in class "Laugh and sneer you prisoners, at the good fortune that came to those who smiled, and its messengers too." He is referring to how they are just jealous that he is getting benefits.
I think it is then that his personality really began to get twisted. Thinking things like "I won't need anyone else. Just leave me alone." he kept faking a smile but internally he became very VERY antisocial and people hating.
"the verge of your limits" refers to how close he really is to insanity/ suicide despite appearing to always smile and be fine. (It's like the thrill of knowing something someone else doesn't know. It's his own private little joke.) The question "How do you like it?" is (to me) asking how others/ audience likes his personality (The fake smiling one).
At the second verse he has become very popular. He was probably always surrounded by people, but that's when he realized that everyone else was wearing a mask too. Seeing everyone faking smiles made him notice that it wasn't right. His emotions started coming back. He meets a girl that doesn't wear a mask, he falls for her and fears he will lose his ability to love. He sees himself as dark and distorted while he see's her as a far away light (Scene at 1:20 where the dark hands are reaching for a girl that's holding a mask). He tries to not think about his feeling again "An equation on the abacus, I calculate it in my head, click clack" He tries to be more robotic.
He tries to forget it but he can't. He keeps questioning the mask and that's why his hair color changes. "Someone requested I play house and trust them" This is his parents, he is seeing that his parents only care about a perfect family and not about him. They just want to "Play house". I think there may be fighting in his house due to the phrase "dissonance" (meaning lack of harmony). Because he has family troubles he can't relax at home. He finally realizes that he hasn't relaxed in probably years and gets an overwhelming feeling of tiredness.
When he goes to school he can see behind people's masks: he see's how sad and angry they are. He starts to say that they don't need to wear their masks to please the adults, but everyone stays away from him. They don't want to get into trouble. They make fun of him for acting out and being childish, but he only sees the masks and that they are prisoners. He feels sorry for them. He verifies his belief that the students are being controlled by the adults.
He leaves them and finds the girl. He no longer is wearing his mask (and looks really tired yet relieved) and asks her "how do you like it?" referring to his true personality.
The solution was that they ran away together.

In all honesty, I think it's pretty straight forward. The one unloved by anyone is the one who wants love most. So, the boy pretends to be happy to obtain love, but forgets what it used to mean to him as he struggles under the weight of perfection.

I love how you can really easily tell who made this just by listening to it. A lot of collabs end up kinda unremarkable to the point they might as well have been done by one person, but here it's a really distinct blend of their really distinct styles and it's awesome. They should totally work together more.

My theory is it's actually Kaito transitioning into Rin. The ending with Rin tearing off clothes to reveal girl clothes, the mask, the putting on a mask for the "role he yearned for"... it might be Len, too, the hair and scarf just got me. Slowly, you notice Rin dyes her hair, puts on pink, "great efforts aren't rewarded with anything", the sudden barrets when the mask is taken off, and I think the marks are reasons or examples of being misgendered.
