This is a good, tough fight! But my favorites are Ali’s fights against Foreman and Frazier. He also had an incredible fight against Ken Norton which many think Norton won. Norton fought toe to toe with Ali. He was a great fighter but you have to knock down the Champion to win. Points aren’t enough. These Ali fights are still worth watching over and over because Ali had a great style of boxing. Also, the Leonord fights against Hagler and Hearns. Thanks to UA-cam for making these available again. I’m not into UFC fights and today’s Boxers are boring. I don’t even know who the Heavyweight Champ is. No one cares anymore about boxing because of the lack of personalities. Ali was a great entertainer and people loved to hear him talk and tell jokes, anecdotes and give out sound bites. He was a master at nicknames and sound bites that the Press at the time just ate up! The Thrilla in Manila! The Rumble in the Jungle! He will fall in round 5! And then he would back that up and do it! No one but Ali did that! He was one of a kind! I miss his personality and good sense of humor. Nobody in Boxing 🥊 like him anymore! RIP Ali-You are unforgettable!
@@highdefboxing8056 Yeah, Ok. Ali was popular around the world! He was an Icon! He was a great entertainer, not just a Boxer! RIP Ali I miss his personality and humor.
Ali's performance was on that day far below his best and this is not intended to play down Bonavena's display of great heart. He and Ali belonged to an era when heavyweight boxing was at it's best and no era before or after compares to that one. Those were greatest heavyweights with or without world titles.
my god this is gold you cant do it like this anymore : ali trolling howard while he´s on the telephone with joe! and then ali talks on the telephone with joe!! man what times
Three knockdowns in 24 seconds ... 58:5859:1059:22 ... that's literally three standing eight counts. Has anyone ever done it faster? I doubt it. Imagine how good he would have been in this fight if the government hadn't taken away the previous three and one-half years of his career.
Great match de Bonavena !!! the fight was balanced until the last round.
Ali wasn't a particularly thickly muscled or intimidating looking guy, but one thing I've noticed is that when he had to wrestle guys up close, he had no problems shoving them around. Perhaps he was little stronger than most people thought?
+Huxxy This. Watched all of his fights and noticed the same thing, finally someone thinking the same. When he wrestled with guys he was kinda strong and would always win lol, he had some power in his hands.
Ali was very strong. He always dosed his punches to last to the 15th round and most of the time he did it it served him good. He never liked to train by his own admission and lost some fights due to poor training and bad shape and condition. But when he had to fight for an important match he always won! If he was not so involved in other things he'd have been even greater!
+Huxxy Ali was surprisingly strong and heavy handed. He didn't knock people out with one-punch power because he rarely stepped into his punches with the proper leverage like other "rough and tumble" type fighters. Usually, Ali would be backpedaling, diminishing the power his 6' 3" 215lb body could produce.
i seem to remember that this happened after Ali's 4 yr lay off . his best years ! anyone that has an issue with GREAT needs to remove 4 years at their prime ! Ali was the greatest
Oscar Bonavena is one of my all-time favorite fighters, one of the first to grab my attention when I started learning the history of the sport. Was there ever a tougher heavyweight in boxing history? Oscar fought everyone of his era - except Jerry Quarry. Bonavena v Quarry would have been some fight.
Howard Cosell is masterful in that post-fight chaos and bedlam, managing the narration, interviews, replay, crowd, phone call … he may have been annoying but he knew his stuff.
Ali was intelligent and adapted his style to the conditions at hand. While he had lost some speed in 3 1/2 years, he offset that loss with increased power. And he wasn't exactly slow. Bonavena was a tough fighter. Normally someone that tough isn't used as a tune up bout, but Ali was anxious to fight Frazier and be undisputed champ again. I don't think Ali was the perfect fighter as some fans do, but he certainly was great and extremely courageous.
A south american Rocky Balboa, such a couratgeus guy . This Ali´s last punch was a luck. What a lucky man he´s been . He looked realy lost as Bonavena was getting bigger and bigger thru the fight. What a pity. I admire Bonavena!
Edward Chacon Maybe your luck in boxing is what you make of it. Both fighters exremely tired at the end. Oscar left himself open to the short left more than one time. He almost walked on the the finisher. Ali would have gotten up from the same punch, as he proved against the greatest left-hooker, Joe Frazier.
brother there is no luck in boxing, that punch was after Ali dodge the Bonavena responding inmediately, do you realize wath kind of reflex and speed is needed to do that? call luck to the preparation that is needed its almost an insult, that is called a counter punch it requires a lot of trainig and has nothing to do with luck.
Just watched the last round again and the ref didn’t give Oscar the standing 8 count either time. Ali was chasing the ref and Oscar instead of going to a neutral corner the ref couldn’t stop Ali.
Belburg Bonavena would destroy nowadays; the only reason he wasn't a champ was because he was fighting in the golden age of boxing, against some of the greatest fighters of all time like Ali and Frazier.
***** Indeed, he would take out todays heavys, as well as most of the 80's and the late 70's.Could see him beating Ken Norton and Leon Spinks, Foreman should've given him and Quarry a shot, even though Bonavena wasn't the same by the time George got the belt.
Thanks v much for this upload - but I have to say that as much as I love Ali (and loved him then too) Oscar wasn't given much protection in that last round by the ref....Ali wasn't made to go to a neutral corner at any point, he was charging Oscar down on both the first 2 knockdowns. Maybe there was no 8 count then but as far as I know you always had to go to a neutral corner. I wish Ali had had at least ONE more fight before going in against Joe Frazier, maybe even two. I think then he would have preserved his unbeaten record. Still that's all in the past, as Jose Torres pointed out in "Sting like a Bee" (really good book about Ali) Ali grew by the defeat to Frazier. People saw him in a different light, having to deal with a defeat - staying dignified, meeting the public very soon after, etc etc. So glad I saw this man in his great days
Back in 1970, Frazier was sitting back in the cut watching this fight. He had already fought Oscar twice and he watched as Ali was getting hit by Oscar left hook. The left hook would be the punch that Frazier was none best for, as well as, the constantly, forward attack. This would be the formula that he would use to beat Ali in the first Ali-Frazier fight. Frazier could execute his punches a lot better than Oscar could. Frazier's left hook would give Ali problems in all of their fights. However, Ali, as the master boxer, changed his style a bit in each of the next two Frazier fights until finally in A/F III, he pulled his elbows in tighter in order to be more efficient and powerful with his punches, the net result was that he increased the punishment on Frazier until at length, he could not answer the bell in A/F III.......that strategy worked.
@@citizenscapital2458 Great analysis cit cap....stuff there that I didn't know at all...I like the way you point out that Ali grew in his handling over Frazier over fights 2 and 3...yes this seems very logical and is borne out by Ali's approach, maybe less ego, is fights 2 and 3. By 75 Ali seemed (to me) to be less worried by his reputation, winning the title again seemed to take the edge off him, he was (if poss) even more flexible and less stiff. Look at him in the intro to the 3rd fight, he looks as if he's off on holiday. I also notice in the 3rd Norton fight, there's less ego, he's just going for it, he's more relaxed. Wish though that he had retired after 3rd Norton fight.
@@johntate5722 ,@By '75 Ali seemed less worried about his reputation: Also one must consider and appreciate that by 1975, Ali had already been fighting professionally for 15 yrs after he won the gold in the 1960 Olympics and had become a master boxer. As a supreme master boxer, Ali could also fight as a puncher if this was necessary to beat a particular opponent. In training for Foreman, Ali spent more time with the heavy bag. As a result, he really out physical Foreman in that fight and brought a heavier punch into the fight , as well as, constant, repetitive punches which eventually wore Foreman down. Also, its pretty astonishing to consider the number and quality of fights Ali had after he beat Foreman in 1974. In some instances, he fought several of the top contenders 2 & 3 times.......and he fought ALLL comers. Even more astonishing is to consider all those fights Ali had in 1975 & 1976, then to be outboxed just 2 years later in 1978 by a very unimpressive, light heavy weight in Leon Spinks.
@@citizenscapital2458 Yes this would make lots of sense, but it also might feed into the possibility that he didn't want to dance and move as much, maybe stand a bit more and trade. He would have to take some punishment for this however. Also the right hand leads confused (and probably hurt) Foreman - also this was true in the Ron Lyle fight I think. This is just my opinion but also he was even more a world figure at this point and this would have derailed a bit of his time energy and emotion from the ring. I never wanted to see a sub standard Ali in the ring, I just couldn't cope with it - even had nightmares about it years later. It was great when he got "up" for the very big ones like Norton and Frazier where he saw a real threat but other bouts like the one v Jimmy Young (and a couple of others) he maybe tried to coast through, and didn't look good. Your example (Spinks) is a good one. I think he felt that Spinks couldn't do 15 rounds, but fair play to Ali he got it right in their second bout. You make an excellent point about it being 15 years (by 75) since he had started his pro career, amazing that he could still do the training, and put all the effort in.
@UCvTk2sbxSXlaX_X1xttT92Q @Ali/Slinks. Yes, Ali got it right at 2nd fight. He say from 1st fight, brought constant pressure, so he open 2nd fight with much more active hands, better shape and he aimed to punish Spinks more and he did. Made Spinks look like an amateur. @Jimmy Young, he was a counter puncher. He gave a lot of fighters a difficult fight.
Bonavena was really tough. Frazier collapsed after fighting him, completely exhausted. Problem was this was Ali's second fight after his 31/2 years layoff. He was not really fit and still wasn't 100 percent when he took on the champ Frazier. Who the hell takes on one of the best heavyweights of all time in only his third fight after such a long layoff? Joe Louis said Ali will never be champion again 'cause even if he had been off for 1 year it would be too much ring rust but for over 3 years it was impossible. As we all know the great Louis was dead wrong and Ali recaptured the crown and made fools of the best of us.
Im from Argentina, Oscar was the only one down here that can say that step up in a ring with such a Boxer as Ali... and for 45 minute oh my sweet jesus! Again I confess I tear up when Ali said to Oscar "Thank you Oscar I love you too"... Ali is the best boxer in all of the history of Box by far. I´m so proud that even in the defeat Oscar mustard his awful english and congratulate Ali... I mean my God what a gentleman... So proud of Oscar Bonavena as I´am of Diego Maradona
We notice quickly that Ali is not the same as before and his best period is over.He suffers many more punches than before. He no longer has the amazing speed and agility of movements and exceptional footwork that made him uncatchable. Three years of inactivity is an eternity for every boxer, for even the greatest boxer of all time.

Best quality I've seen of this fight, Thank you 😊
Nothing but respect for Oscar. He fought one hell of a fight against Ali. He has honor and heart. And was a gentleman after the fight.
If Oscar Bonavena had only 'just one more round'... what a fight...
Well, he would still be knocked out in the 16th round if there was one. Ali didn't want to hurt him soon so he could guarantee a fight with Joe Frazier.
welll, he could have had one less round, but ali was simply better. incredible fight tho'

Bonavena was a tough guy, but he just happened to be fighting the greatest heavyweight champion to ever live.
From Argentina. Yes.
Says who?
@@yankee2666 Frazier 1/2 (15 rounds) Ali (15 rounds)
Sonny Liston would have stopped Bonavena in 3 or 4 rounds.

Yes, I really enjoyed watching this fight great fight.
It's a boxing match wait and see past the second round .
Tremenda pelea grande Ringo !!🇦🇷🇦🇷
Well said👍 People said he had a good chin but l called it a tough nut head (to crack) both physically & mentally.

Ali was popular around the world! He was an Icon! He used to say he could go anywhere in the world 🌎 and be welcomed and invited to dinner 🥘 at peoples homes and even to stay for a while.
I think he was right! People idolized him and loved him!
Ali at the end: “I love you, Oscar.” Most Ali opponents loved Ali.
Un
my god this is gold you cant do it like this anymore : ali trolling howard while he´s on the telephone with joe! and then ali talks on the telephone with joe!! man what times
Three knockdowns in 24 seconds ... 58:58 59:10 59:22 ... that's literally three standing eight counts. Has anyone ever done it faster? I doubt it. Imagine how good he would have been in this fight if the government hadn't taken away the previous three and one-half years of his career.
Yeah well, you hide behind a fake belief to avoid having to serve and maybe you have to expect consequences
Great match de Bonavena !!! the fight was balanced until the last round.
I was a kid when seeing this boxing, Mohammed Ali is no question was, has been and will be the greatest boxer ever in this planet
+Huxxy
Yes, he was really strong.
Angelo Dundee once said that Ali was physically the strongest fighter he ever worked with.
***** Agree totally, especially with your remark about Foreman.
Ali was such a gentle man I never for get the day I met him
Oscar Bonavena is one of my all-time favorite fighters, one of the first to grab my attention when I started learning the history of the sport. Was there ever a tougher heavyweight in boxing history? Oscar fought everyone of his era - except Jerry Quarry. Bonavena v Quarry would have been some fight.
Me rr.
lol, the interview after the fight tells it all...
Edward Chacon no luck good punch Sirry

Ali was a head hunter, watch closely how Ali sinks that jab in ringo's eye each time. Wearing him down each time.
Without the Great legendary Mohamed Ali there’s no Boxing
Just watched the last round again and the ref didn’t give Oscar the standing 8 count either time. Ali was chasing the ref and Oscar instead of going to a neutral corner the ref couldn’t stop Ali.
Hahaa!
Your point is?
Abdulhamid hassen the ref lost control of the fight.

Bonavena was very tough, Ali never fought him again
Ever wonder what would have happened if Foreman had taken on Bonavena, say about 1970-72?
Vincent Fisher Indeed, might have been an upset.
Vincent Fisher 'Vena was a tough dude, in the right circumstances, would've been champion.

Richard Johnson Joe was talking about normal fighters .Not Ali
