You know how Nintendo is letting Illumination take a crack at a Mario movie? And you know how a lot of folks are really apprehensive about this because the "original" Mario movie that came out over here in the '90s was kind of a dumpster fire? Well, in 1986, there was an animated Mario movie, and it nearly became a piece of lost media! Today on Stuff We Play, let's look at Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!

Fun fact: There were a few other - albeit way shorter - Mario animations that never left Japan! One of them that a traffic safety film that, as far as I can tell, has still never been found!
Another fun fact: money me, money now, here's my Patreon: www.patreon.com/stuffweplay

The fact that they just straight up eat their own promotional ramen in the middle of the movie is fucking hilarious.

this movie feels like the biggest drug induced fever dream that i watched with my friends, it was so hilarious at points that we couldn't stop laughing, and it's so obscure that the opening song became an inside joke in my friends group, it's so good

Fun Fact: Incase you didn't know, in the anime, Princess Peach was actually called "ピーチ姫 (pīchi hime)" which shares a huge resemblance to "Princess Peach," and that was in *1986 JAPAN.* It wasn't until *SUPER MARIO 64* that us Americans got used to *PRINCESS PEACH.* Wow.. my mind would've been blown..

I really enjoyed this wacky video about this fun Mario movie. I like how some of your content, "Stuff we play" is "Stuff we watch". Once again is nice to see different retro video game related content

I saw the English dub of this film on UA-cam for free. My favorite part of the film was when Mario ate the star to beat up Browser. The film taught me to never give up on your dreams. I never knew Mario was in an anime film in the 80's until now.

This movie is decent in my opinion. I like the VAs, the animation still holds up, and the plot and material is fully based on the series. I would always prefer this over DIC’s adaptation and Amada Anime Series SMB

It's hard because the new movie is more fundementally based on the American super mario, based on the plot of super show world. And It looks very fortnite in astethics. Despite having the Japanese Nintendo support and legal recognition

I remember finding this on UA-cam like, Waaaaay back in the ancient times known as the mid-to-late 2000s, totally untranslated, rubbish quality, and I like... I was a huge Mario fangirl as a kid, but I honestly couldn't sit through it lol
At least in part because I was still on dial up at the time so videos took for-bloody-ever to load...
That said, all these years later, while this movie has always been somewhere at the back of my mind, I never really felt the need to go back to it and watch it? And I still kinda don't? lol
It sure is an interesting curiosity though!

I'm surprised nothing from it ended up in any one school UA-cam Poops haha

The Sonic OVA was dubbed into english, and is a really good dub at that. Even the mouth movements were changed to fit the dub, like mouths saying "Dr. Robotnik" and "Tails," as in japan at the time those characters are called "Dr. Eggman" and "Miles" respectively. #SONICCONFIRMEDBETTERTHANMARIO

never heard of this movie. Now I want to watch it. I still think this upcoming movie should have used Charles Martinet. I met him at a comic-con. He is Mario. I got his autograph on my SM64 cartridge.
and ooh A Mario vinyl record? I have the Japanese cd "The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music". I wish they would have put it on vinyl
    Happy Pride month.
