If I had been a passenger on that Bus I would've had something to say. Not to mention I would've called the police to let them know I was on a railway junction half on the tracks with an approaching train who had to stop..and thankfully could. I would've demanded they charge the bus driver with dangerous driving and reckless endangerment, because had no thought as to what could've happened to his passengers should the train have been bombing along. absolutely disgusting. At the very least this man should've lost his job because he could've potentially caused a disaster.

If I were the judge he'd be getting one year of imprisonment suspended for two years, absolute minimum, plus a disqualification from driving (with a requirement for an extended retest before he drives again) for the next 10 years, concurrent to his sentence. Too bad most judges would just give him 100 hours community service and 6 points (if that!). The judicial system is way too soft at times, and way too hard at others.

Yes clearly poor driving the box junction at the crossing means do not proceed unless you can see your exit is clear bryond and it certainly was not with the double decker in front .... total idiot driving and it is this kind of thing which can become fatal. Wake up people out there.

The proper thing would've been to emergency release the doors / break the glass, leave the bus and hit the crossing's emergency button or telephone. The fact that the train was moving so slow this time was pure luck!

But the bus driver should still be held accountable, this is just stupid, these trains cross about twice per hour and a train hitting you with this speed might not be fatal but it still wouldn't be nice either!

This is a very common problem. From time to time I work a signal panel that is responsible for two CCTV level crossings. In a single shift I counted 60 drivers jumping the red lights.
That bus mover [I won't call him/her a Driver] should be sacked, nicked, and banned for years. There's just no possible excuse. As a Signalman and Crossing Keeper for 10 yrs, I saw many idiots but the worst/best, was the funeral I cut in half at Carleton (Nr Blackpool). Traffic was backed-up from nearby T-junction. Just before I pressed the barriers button, the hearse creeped over the X-ing, ignoring me and stopped with back end inside the painted line. The Limos [with mourners], stopped with front-end over X-ing. Continuing to ignore my shouts etc. the hearse mover [All dressed up], stuck his nose up at me. So I pointed down the track to show him the tiny patch of yellow on the loco's front, just appearing around a bend. THAT soon changed his attitude. Then he panicked and squeezed a couple of feet ahead; and the limos were desperately honking each other to shove back from the X-ing. Obviously, the train-driver got the Distant Signal against him, which would slow him down; in rear of the [red] Home signal. protecting the X-ing. I didn't get chance to collect details. as I was trying to keep things going; but I would have. Dead stupid, but they wouldn't do that again. No consideration for train drivers etc.
This is why level crossing gates have to be down for ages. If people obeyed signs they would only need to be closed for 30s or so, but they have to make extra safety measures for impatient people.
That was terrible driving from the bus driver, utterly terrible from him, he should be sacked, he did nothing, he a shouldn't have gone in there, (and b) as this idiot did go in there, he should have got himself out of it, Lucky the train stopped for it, the train driver must of been alerted to it, from God for that.
It looks like they could have backed up and pulled to the left towards the camera operator easily enough too. It wasn't even a difficult situation to fix had they somehow got there by accident to begin with.

i find it interesting that level crossing signals have an amber light on them in adition to the two red lights, here is aus we only have two lights on them
At my local level crossing, the barriers come down a full 4 minutes before the train arrives, so you can sort of understand the frustration of drivers and particularly pedestrians when it's raining. One minute would be more than adequate

Plenty of comments regarding removing the amber light. Be like removing it from regular traffic signals. People ignore those the same way... amber means be prepare to stop... not sneak through. Perhaps the issue is the fact that these offences are not enforced. Bus driver has obviously entered the yellow hatchings when he is not able to proceed... never mind fact its on a level crossing. Enforce the law properly and then people might obey the rules. Or course there will still be idiots who ignore rules.... these will be twatted by a train, removing the problem permantly.
The amber warning light is an indication that the crossing is about to go in to use, you are supposed to prepare to stop as the red aspect will kick in roughly 3-5 seconds later. The bus driver in that case made a huge error of judgment as they should have known that entering the box junction was a criminal offence if the exit out of it was unavailable and that is punishable by means of a prosecution or a FPN in lower cases. The aggravating factor in this case is that the box junction is actually a non barrier level crossing which is worked by flagmen as well as the warning lights in conjunction with the signalling system. I do like how the driver of the BD Schenker class66 just pulled up and sat there at the edge of the crossing as it was a very public reminder that the bus driver had been a complete and utter twat.
There days things can go wrong as crossing may be miles away from where they are being controlled from. I saw what could have been a nasty situation at North Camp station. Luckily the main road now crosses the line on a bridge. I was waiting for a train to Gatwick and there was a Virgin Cross country running ahead of it. The alarm for the crossing started and the Virgin train came through at about 60-70 mph before barriers had even started closing. The barriers closed after the train had gone. A minute or so later there was an announcement “The next train is not stopping at this station. Keep back from the platform edge.” The next train was stopping because it was the one I was getting.
I recognise one of those crossings, Brockenhurst in New Forest, I used to watch the trains there, clearly some morons who don't understand what a red light means.. A relative of mine was a train driver for Southern trains, worse feeling he said was seeing a car stuck between the gates on the crossing and hitting the emergency break and knowing it takes about 20 football pitches to stop at 70mph and knowing he couldn't swerve to avoid..
I think some of them weren't in the wrong tbh. For example, when it's flashing red but you're already in the danger zone then stopping before the white line is impossible so maybe you would have to speed through before the barriers close in
It probably doesn't help that it's 15 seconds from when the yellow light comes on to when the gates start coming down. It just encourages people to go through. If the timing were similar to traffic lights, people would be more inclined to stop when the yellow light comes on.

I don't think you can charge them with "attempted manslaughter" but I'm sure there's a charge of endangering life that the bus driver could be charged with. Even then though, due to the way open crossings operate it's not too difficult to provide an argument against such a charge
I have an idea to prevent cars skipping crossings: Raising bollards/ramps on the left-hand side, and directional tyre spikes on the right, allowing traffic to exit but not enter the crossing. Obviously done far enough ahead to allow the vehicle to stop clear of the track(s).
Russia already has an idea like that - a ramp raises either side of the crossing when the crossing activates. However I have seen videos of cars crashing into it!

You’d think a professional driver would know that you do not enter a box junction / hatched area unless the exit is clear! I’m guessing there were at least a couple of complaints about the driver of the bus after this!
To be fair the first car at 0:25 was probably too close to stop safely, you can't expect people to slam on the breaks and risk the car behind ploughing into them. The car behind though should've stopped.
As others have pointed out, the warning starts _so_ early and goes on for _so_ long, the bus driver probably assumed traffic would clear long before the train would show up. In the northeast US, the first indication is 5-6 seconds of red lights & bells/sounds, and the gates start descending. The train usually comes through within 15 seconds. Aggressive drivers might try to beat the gates, but once they're down *nobody* tries to get through, because everybody knows you're more likely than not to be hit. So, I suspect that making the warning signals more brief--and eliminating the delay between the light turning red and the gates descending, as I mentioned earlier--would result in people respecting them more.
Bet the driver of that freight train wasn't happy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the last clip isn't that in Southampton? I think that's a branch line that goes to the docks, so thankfully the trains are at low speed. I hope that driver is no longer driving buses.
I honestly believe that if normal traffic lights were installed at crossings, which showed red when the train came (as well as the lights currently used and gates closed) it would solve 95% of the problem. Sure, people do jump red traffic lights but not as often as crossings.

I prefer the ding-ding bell that we use in the United States. That siren is just annoying. I think they should have spikes that come up out of the ground after about 5 seconds, and at lest 5 seconds before the barrier lowers (for the ones that have barriers). In the US, a bus driver would be fired after 1 documented complaint for this. Our school buses have to come to a complete stop and check both ways before EVER crossing a rail track, signal or not. They don't care if the track has been out of service for 10 years, you check.
Thing I find most alarming about it... The bus passengers just sat there... it's like they've just chosen to accept their fates... I would have been shoving that door open and jumping the hell off of that bus... You all saw how long that train took to stop, even moving that slowly... They don't stop as fast as cars can, especially freight trains... What's the matter with people?
why didn't the bus driver go to the other lane...even if he was technically not allowed, it would have been better to move out of the way than to just block the train? Also, aren't there barriers that come down at this crossing? If not, there should at least have them.
How it works now: 1) Drivers see an amber light. 2) After a time, the light turns red. 3) After a time, the gates descend. 4) After a time, the train comes through. If you don't want drivers to feel safe running through the red light, why wait after the light turns red to lower the gates? If the gates start descending as soon as the lights go from amber to red, people will stop assuming they are safe to cross if they run the red light early enough. Yes, it may take the public a while to get used to the idea that the gates start to descend the moment the light turns red. Nevertheless, it's preferable to be surprised by gates lowering earlier than usual, then to feel safe going through the red light and then be surprised by a train coming through earlier than usual.
I think the reason why the gates don't come down immediately is because the crossing needs to be cleared of pedestrians who may not be able to clear the crossing as quick. It would be good if the crossings has shorter waiting times though.
The amber light could be long enough for pedestrians to clear the crossing, and serve as the only warning to drivers and pedestrians alike that the gates will descend very soon.
Bus driver did not bother to reverse to be out of the way of train. He was in the front of the bus and safe if his bus gets hit by train and those at rear were some other people. If they were his children, he would have done a reverse.

Although a quite few of these people were pushing it a bit the bus driver was by far the stupidest. However, i dont think people should be so worked up about it. The 66 was barely going 15mph and had been forewarned by the signalman / crossing operator / CCTV- whatever it is these days- so they werent in any *serious* risk. Kudos to the 66 driver going right up to him. Could of blown the horn a lot, that would of put the point even further across. Lastly, i suggest you improve your filming, i felt like i was watching an earthquake. Interesting video :)

Yeah here in Australia well in Melbourne the authorits have put up cameras now at hot spots.
There days things can go wrong as crossing may be miles away from where they are being controlled from. I saw what could have been a nasty situation at North Camp station. Luckily the main road now crosses the line on a bridge. I was waiting for a train to Gatwick and there was a Virgin Cross country running ahead of it. The alarm for the crossing started and the Virgin train came through at about 60-70 mph before barriers had even started closing. The barriers closed after the train had gone. A minute or so later there was an announcement “The next train is not stopping at this station. Keep back from the platform edge.” The next train was stopping because it was the one I was getting.
I pass over one every day at a quiet village, sometimes traffic can cause a tail back and often I see people stopped on the tracks!
I recognise one of those crossings, Brockenhurst in New Forest, I used to watch the trains there, clearly some morons who don't understand what a red light means.. A relative of mine was a train driver for Southern trains, worse feeling he said was seeing a car stuck between the gates on the crossing and hitting the emergency break and knowing it takes about 20 football pitches to stop at 70mph and knowing he couldn't swerve to avoid..
I think some of them weren't in the wrong tbh. For example, when it's flashing red but you're already in the danger zone then stopping before the white line is impossible so maybe you would have to speed through before the barriers close in
It probably doesn't help that it's 15 seconds from when the yellow light comes on to when the gates start coming down. It just encourages people to go through. If the timing were similar to traffic lights, people would be more inclined to stop when the yellow light comes on.
If I was the driver of that 66, I would be out to shout at the bus driver in SECONDS
The bus driver of the city-red/First bus at 2:41 was finned 300£ and was put in jail.
I think he was removed from his job too!

if you don't see the lights start flashing, it's ok. it's only stupid if you go across while the red lights are flashing. SLOW DOWN NEAR RAILROAD CROSSINGS.

I don't think you can charge them with "attempted manslaughter" but I'm sure there's a charge of endangering life that the bus driver could be charged with. Even then though, due to the way open crossings operate it's not too difficult to provide an argument against such a charge

I have an idea to prevent cars skipping crossings: Raising bollards/ramps on the left-hand side, and directional tyre spikes on the right, allowing traffic to exit but not enter the crossing. Obviously done far enough ahead to allow the vehicle to stop clear of the track(s).
Russia already has an idea like that - a ramp raises either side of the crossing when the crossing activates. However I have seen videos of cars crashing into it!

Many do have enforcement cameras, both for the lights and the box junctions (where present), alongside some banned turns in relation to crossings.
Don't know where Canute Road level crossing is in London, but very surprised at a busy place it has no barriers.
HJP1 HJP2: Southampton in Hampshire - track leads to docks and is generally freight only with occasional special passenger workings.
I'd have jumped off that bus immediately had I been on it. The guy sitting at the back looks to be too engrossed in his phone to realize what's happening.
You’d think a professional driver would know that you do not enter a box junction / hatched area unless the exit is clear! I’m guessing there were at least a couple of complaints about the driver of the bus after this!
To be fair the first car at 0:25 was probably too close to stop safely, you can't expect people to slam on the breaks and risk the car behind ploughing into them. The car behind though should've stopped.
Why didn't the bus at the end think to reverse to the side of the queued cars to let the train pass?
As others have pointed out, the warning starts _so_ early and goes on for _so_ long, the bus driver probably assumed traffic would clear long before the train would show up.
In the northeast US, the first indication is 5-6 seconds of red lights & bells/sounds, and the gates start descending. The train usually comes through within 15 seconds. Aggressive drivers might try to beat the gates, but once they're down *nobody* tries to get through, because everybody knows you're more likely than not to be hit.
So, I suspect that making the warning signals more brief--and eliminating the delay between the light turning red and the gates descending, as I mentioned earlier--would result in people respecting them more.
I was thinking that when I watched the video back. I have no idea why - maybe the driver didn't even know he was on the tracks.
...or at least, the motorman would have kept on the horn until the bus driver decided to take the situation seriously.

Bet the driver of that freight train wasn't happy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the last clip isn't that in Southampton? I think that's a branch line that goes to the docks, so thankfully the trains are at low speed. I hope that driver is no longer driving buses.
Maybe they should change the warning light system to basic traffic lights where people would then hopefully stop when instructed to do so.

I honestly believe that if normal traffic lights were installed at crossings, which showed red when the train came (as well as the lights currently used and gates closed) it would solve 95% of the problem. Sure, people do jump red traffic lights but not as often as crossings.
I would have a chat with the class 66 driver to congratulate him or her about how he/she handled the situation with professionalism. If you are the class 66 driver and are watching this video, you have my respect!

I prefer the ding-ding bell that we use in the United States. That siren is just annoying. I think they should have spikes that come up out of the ground after about 5 seconds, and at lest 5 seconds before the barrier lowers (for the ones that have barriers). In the US, a bus driver would be fired after 1 documented complaint for this. Our school buses have to come to a complete stop and check both ways before EVER crossing a rail track, signal or not. They don't care if the track has been out of service for 10 years, you check.

why didn't the bus driver go to the other lane...even if he was technically not allowed, it would have been better to move out of the way than to just block the train? Also, aren't there barriers that come down at this crossing? If not, there should at least have them.
How it works now:
1) Drivers see an amber light.
2) After a time, the light turns red.
3) After a time, the gates descend.
4) After a time, the train comes through.
If you don't want drivers to feel safe running through the red light, why wait after the light turns red to lower the gates? If the gates start descending as soon as the lights go from amber to red, people will stop assuming they are safe to cross if they run the red light early enough.
Yes, it may take the public a while to get used to the idea that the gates start to descend the moment the light turns red. Nevertheless, it's preferable to be surprised by gates lowering earlier than usual, then to feel safe going through the red light and then be surprised by a train coming through earlier than usual.
I think the reason why the gates don't come down immediately is because the crossing needs to be cleared of pedestrians who may not be able to clear the crossing as quick. It would be good if the crossings has shorter waiting times though.
The amber light could be long enough for pedestrians to clear the crossing, and serve as the only warning to drivers and pedestrians alike that the gates will descend very soon.

Bus driver did not bother to reverse to be out of the way of train. He was in the front of the bus and safe if his bus gets hit by train and those at rear were some other people. If they were his children, he would have done a reverse.
Shan Shanmugapalan any bus with passenger are not allow to reverse and it against rule apply unless it empty.

Although a quite few of these people were pushing it a bit the bus driver was by far the stupidest. However, i dont think people should be so worked up about it. The 66 was barely going 15mph and had been forewarned by the signalman / crossing operator / CCTV- whatever it is these days- so they werent in any *serious* risk. Kudos to the 66 driver going right up to him. Could of blown the horn a lot, that would of put the point even further across. Lastly, i suggest you improve your filming, i felt like i was watching an earthquake. Interesting video :)
