This is always an important thing to teach. To family, friends, or anyone else. (In the U.S., we call them rail crossings.) You can't win, the physics will kill you and your passengers. Kudos for the double hardhat and jacket. Double kudos for rail safety awareness.
Nicholas Woodyat Yep, and you'll have to thing that the buffers went pretty much all the way through the car.........on head-height! Only a tank can withstand the forces on impact, and still be somewhat intact, as an accident in Forst Zinna, east Germany showed. Though the crew had bailed earlier, so while the tank can withstand the force of impact and still be somewhat intact, tracks and roadwheels torn off, I wouldn't bet on the crew surviving it. That accident was caused when a Soviet Tank crew got stuck on the tracks because they had misnavigated on a night driving exercise. They then bailed and left the tank on the track, without notifying anyone that the tank was there. Due to the bilateral "agreement" with the Soviet union about the occupational forces they were never punished for their misdeeds.
I thought it was agreat clip and highlights just what can happen, if anyone had been in that car they wouldnt have stood a chance as the buffers went straight through the windows
That is a class 31 locomotive, it weighs over 100 tonnes and the parts that come into contact with the 1.5 tonne car are built like a tank. If it had a heavy TRAIN behind it and no brake application it would have pushed the car for miles on stored momentum alone.
Incase anyone is wondering, if you noticed a second diesel locomotive at 3:00, that was another one of Network Rail's Class 31 diesels, number 31233, which was used to propel 31107 (the loco which hit the Renault Espace) to a high speed of around 80mph, before slowing down to come to a stop and allowing the other loco to smash into the car.
Just a couple of things to clear up: 1. Sir Robert Markson isn't related to Jeremy Clarkson in any way. He just looks like he is. 2. The snail was on the other track, so it was perfectly safe, despite the lack of a high vis jacket.
Probably the better (and definatly more watched) level crossing safety videos I have watched. And more informative. Also network rail usually consists of a few CCTV clips and a note at the end. Top Gear on the other hand...well they went all out.
In Germany, level crossing aren't allowed on tracks with a maximum speed of more than 160 kmph, and the gov. is removing them even on tracks slower than that. In 2008, Deutsche Bahn had more than 20,000, in 2020 that number dropped to 13,000.

I know, right? I had a good laugh, I know there is nothing to worry about. Besides, Ive got my own high-visibility jacket. Several in fact :D you can never be too careful...
Its probably the most serious and informative video Top Gear have ever done. The message and point of the video was don't run the lights. The statistics at the front are taken from government statistics-though Jeremy didn't say that it is all old people nor did he say young people aren't a problem. Presented in his style, Top Gears Budget, and on NR's request I think it was very good. Its not like he said "yeah run the lights." Oh and for anyone getting confused about the high vis vest comment-you don't have to wear a high vis vest to cross a level crossing.
The high visibility jacket bit is actually a dig at the French (one of Clarkson's favorite groups to poke fun at). Since 2008, France has had a law in place requiring all drivers to have one for use in their cars at all times. www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187070-c98919/France:High.Visibility.Jackets.html Jeremy first mentioned this law when Top Gear did the economy run from Basel to Blackpool - he actually wore the jacket while driving across France.

The train collision with road vehicle is no joke. It is a major safety hazard not just to road users but also to trains. In 2004, a HST derailed after hitting a road vehicle on a level crossing in West Berkshire, 7 people killed in the crash including one in the car.
The driver of the car in this case deliberately made that crossing with the intent to kill himself. Why? Because he thought he was diagnosed with AIDS. No seriously, the Ufton Nervet Derailment of November 2004 was the result of 48-year-old chef Brian Drysdale mistakenly thinking that he contracted AIDS in the 1990s after a test from the NHS had pending results. He even phoned them a week before his suicide about his declining mental health.
Incredible footage.. In the super slowmo you can clearly see that the bumpers on the front of the train are almost coming out of the left hand side of the car before it's pushed away. Imagine how dead you'd be....
Shouldn't be on the road after a certain age. Sounds harsh but its not at all. If the elderly person in question is capable of driving and needs to be on the road he/she should have to be re-tested after the age of 75 or around that point. No idea why this is still overlooked when its clearly a major issue. A lot of elderly people simply do not know the current rules of the road due to when they passed their tests. The roads are also much faster and more aggressive than they used to be. So what many see as experience is actually huge inexperience...and side that with a slow, hesitant, worried and over cautious driving style and it can easily end in disaster and does so daily for elderly drivers.

He does have a point about old people causing lots of accidents. I think that after a certain age, elderly drivers should have to retake the driving test again and be examined physically fit enough to drive in order for their license to remain valid. They should take the test regularly like every 12 months just like an airline pilot needs to renew their license each year.
They used the 2nd Class 31 to push the first one to speed and then broke away to let the first 31 hit the car. That's why the ballast is flying everywhere, the wreckage of the Espace was used as a drag break with extra ballast piled up on either side of the rails. Makes for dramatic visuals and better safety.
John Mcalexander: yep, I think you'll find the locomotive at the rear was used to push (uncoupled) the loco at the front, getting it up to speed before stopping, thus letting the loco at the front continue. I'm sure the loco which crashed into the car probably didn't have a driver due to the safety implications. And after hitting the car, without power, the loco would naturally come to a stop anyway.
Well, if you have around 80 tonnes of steel hitting you with 70+ mph then the end results are not going to be pretty. As my Train driver friends told me: "If it is not sticking out of the corn there is no real need to emergency brake. And even if I do I will not be able to stop in less than half a mile..."
Agrotred Budderton : Did you see the train (which was only a single locomotive/engine without any cars after it) slow down by any noticeable amount FROM the impact? :D
h2835 Usually when train drivers crash into cars or vehicles on a level crossing they tend to slow down. Whether or not someone was controlling it (manually or remotely) or it just used physics (1 train+1 vehicle = increase in friction+decrease in speed+excellent ballast fountain) to slow down I do not know.
Trains are interesting things. The way they work is the following: If the brake cable breaks it starts breaking. So: put it in idle, get it up to speed, put the rear engine in full reverse and enjoy the show :D

I think that after a certain age, elderly drivers should have to retake the driving test again and be examined physically fit enough to drive in order for their license to remain valid. They should take the test regularly like every 12 months just like an airline pilot needs to renew their license each year.
Keith Appanah I think that should be a thing for everyone, albeit on a less frequent interval.
"He wasn't even wearing a high visibility jacket!"
this is why i love the original top gear
DiamondHawk74 the original top gear started in 1977.
What happened to the snail?
This video is the sole reason my dad calls Jeremy “The man with double helmets”
3:11 “THAT’S TOAST!”
3:06 that's one way to plow snow..
you telling me that the train driver hasn't see a color changing reliant robin before!?!?
That's because the security officers used a potato as a CCTV camera.
No, they just glitched the camera a little so it's not copyright. The original colour was red.
"Thats TOAST! Thats BAD!" lmfaoooo he's such a child.
they're called safety vests for a reason, they protect you from everything, including trains.
Got it! High visibilty jacket n double helmet! Cheers Jezza!
Pretty scary stuff, the way the buffers lined up would have killed everyone instantly
I love how the car gets completely mangled and made unrecognisable and the train gets a moustache
to sum up - 3:17
They used the 2nd Class 31 to push the first one to speed and then broke away to let the first 31 hit the car. That's why the ballast is flying everywhere, the wreckage of the Espace was used as a drag break with extra ballast piled up on either side of the rails. Makes for dramatic visuals and better safety.
0:23 Why does it Sir Robert Markson his name is Jeremy Clarkson
*it's a joke*
The fourth-gen Espace (steel) which followed the third-gen one (fibreglass) in the film was the model which scored a 5-star Euro NCAP rating
Who else saw a train behind the first one
John Mcalexander: yep, I think you'll find the locomotive at the rear was used to push (uncoupled) the loco at the front, getting it up to speed before stopping, thus letting the loco at the front continue. I'm sure the loco which crashed into the car probably didn't have a driver due to the safety implications. And after hitting the car, without power, the loco would naturally come to a stop anyway.
the locomotive in front (crash loco) was remotely controlled from an operator situated in the locomotive behind.
Andrew Kollasch i wonder why............hmm
UKWMO but usually the breaks engage when decoupled
Yeah I saw the other train.
That skyline R34 at the beginning tho MMMMMH love it
BY THE POWER OF CLASS 31'S I SMITE THINE CAR!!!!!!
Uuuuuuuh what?
Agrotred Budderton : Did you see the train (which was only a single locomotive/engine without any cars after it) slow down by any noticeable amount FROM the impact? :D
h2835 Usually when train drivers crash into cars or vehicles on a level crossing they tend to slow down. Whether or not someone was controlling it (manually or remotely) or it just used physics (1 train+1 vehicle = increase in friction+decrease in speed+excellent ballast fountain) to slow down I do not know.
Trains are interesting things. The way they work is the following: If the brake cable breaks it starts breaking. So: put it in idle, get it up to speed, put the rear engine in full reverse and enjoy the show :D
oh my god... that was insane
What Level Crossing was it filmed on? Very interesting Clip to see. A class 31 crashing in to a Renault Espace. Very Good clip. A lesson to everyone wear High-visibility clothing near vlevel crossings.
Filmed on the B1206 at Hibaldstow AHB Crossing (Automatic Half Barriers)
Located between Kirton Lime Sidings & Brigg signal boxes on the line from Gainsborough to Wrawby Junction.
Hope this helps
The hard hat on hard hat had me rolling.
where can I get a car that changes colour like that reliant robin
Nowhere. That footage was recorded with a toaster.
@@MrSupercar55 yeah, a 5467834 year old one
This was also a demonstration of how to use a Renault van as a ballast regulator.
