A good way to think about it is that. If you flip a coin enough times the amount of heads to tails will not be equal. But the ratio of heads/tails will approach 1:1

      The point wasn't about 50/50
It's the point that due to a statistical phenomenon called "regression to the mean", increasing the sample size will almost always bring you closer to the true odds
For example if you flip 8 heads and 12 tails, you might think it's rigged
But say after 1000 flips, it will be shockingly close to 500 tails 500 heada

    • @grifter84
      @grifter84 Рік тому

A better way to think about it is that , if you flip the coin enough times, you'll probably wind up with a streak of 10 heads or tails in a row at some point. It doesn't mean the game is rigged, it's just a flukey streak that will happen from time to time with a large enough sample size. Over the long run, the streaks will cancel out and the 50/50 ratio will emerge.

If you play long enough, get enough hands in, you will be earning money from the casino, no matter how bad your variance is. Roulette is unbeatable. No matter what, the house will always have an edge because of the green double/triple zeros. You WILL lose money playing enough roulette. If you don't even understand this concept, you should not be gambling.

This is what I noticed and I could be absolutely wrong but when the True Count was +5 and higher playing triple hands was more advantageous than double hands which was more advantageous than just 1 hand till it drops back below +5. Again I understand it's difficult to switch to triple hands without being noticed or finding such less crowded tables these days if you are on a minimum betting table but could be one of the ways to maximize those big positive running counts!

It's why I gave up trying to do it for a living honestly. The swings ruined my mental health. I've had some sessions that seemed like impossibilities occur. My best session I made nearly $5k in one shoe at 2 x 150. Next day I went back and lost $3k in the same amount of time it too to win $5k. Lol The backoffs were also a huge factor. I dumped hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into it and came out a financial loser. No regrets learning how to count or joining BJA but the game for a living is not something for someone who is A.) mentally unstable or incapable of controlling their emotions 24/7 at 110%
B.) Someone who is poor/working class/barely makes living wages and can't stretch the losing streaks that can occur
C.) Hasn't perfected their game to a T and cannot play through multiple shoes without skipping or missing a beat
I couldn't always do those things. Some people can. I still play but I don't think I will ever give it the same level of attention I did the past two years. Still, it's been a wild ride. I had a blast getting a rise out of people's reactions at the tables. I think it was worth it but if I could go back to the beginning I would have put more emphasis on learning good bankroll management. Good stuff as always Colin, thanks.

Spot on Chris. I think the key is to not only be focused on proper play, but somehow also be emotionally and financially detached from your bankroll(even though you want to keep it intact and try to grow it!).
For me, blackjack is a part-time hobby/side hustle. I don't even live too close to a lot of casinos. But I've found that keeping "blackjack life" separate from "regular life" is important.

I can't imagine how many other young aspiring pro card counters just got absolutely wrecked because they watched a few of his videos and read a few books like me, took their money and went into the casino thinking they'd be rich in a couple of years time if they just perfected their counting, learning deviations, deck estimation, True Count conversions, etc. Without learning how to vary their bets according to their overall bankroll and cash on hand, their goals, how to mitigate their risk.
I can't blame the guy for wanting to make card counting palletable for average people so he can keep his business going, grow it, and foster community and generate income for himself, but I know I'm not the only one who got wrecked because he fell for the marketing. @richdouglas2311 2 роки тому +15

Basic strategy played perfectly results in a slight edge to the house. (It varies based on the rules in play.) You will lose more hands than you will win.
If you count cards, you will STILL lose more hands than you will win. The difference is that counting cards gives you some information that can swing your odds on some individual hands in your direction, at which you increase your bets. But, as Colin notes, you can have a hefty losing streak even when the count is in your favor.
Each session you play is an independent event. But within each session, it is not because you are allowed to see (and count) the hands that have been played. No longer random; the hands are dependent events, depending on the previous cards played. This all goes away with the shuffle, which is why the count reverts to zero. You're starting over.
I play near-perfect basic strategy, somewhere around 99%. I'm not a card counter. I should only lose a few hands more than I win in any session, right? Wrong. Because of variance, I once lost 11 hands in a row. Why? Because it happens. It is the long run, when you can move the odds in your favor by changing your bets based on the count is the only way to shift the long run towards your favor.

I have just been going through a bit of a losing streak. After going through a winning streak. Two sessions in a row, the dealer just kept getting unbelievable hands. So many blackjacks and 21s it was insane. It didn't matter how well I kept count. The "luck" was just all with the dealer. But two weeks ago, the luck was all with me. No matter how I played, I just kept winning hand after hand. So it equalled out this month. But, it was all a valuable learning experience. It taught me that variance is a bi*ch. All you can do is play your best and try to minimize your losses when the cards just aren't going your way. And remember that variance goes both ways. You just have to protect your bankroll as you ride through a downturn, secure in the knowledge that eventually it will swing in your favor - and when it does, don't be afraid to put the bets out there.

A lack of understanding of variance--and random, independent events, is why some people think they can develop a "system" to beat games like craps, roulette, and slot machines. You can't. Variance can cause you to come out ahead sometimes, just as it can cause your losses to be greater than expected.
The same goes for "hot" and "cold" tables/machines/wheels/etc. No such thing, except in hindsight. What has happened before has no bearing on what it going to happen. We humans have evolved to seek out patterns in information. It makes us more predictively accurate, which means we're more likely to succeed at something. It's the basis for hunting, agriculture, and science.
But sometimes random events form in ways that look like patterns. They're not, but we construct them anyway. (There is a whole school of thought around us forming these "paradigms.") Casinos take advantage of this. For example, if you approach a roulette table, you'll likely see a sign posted with the most recent numbers produced by the wheel. This is put there to encourage you to see a pattern (that doesn't exist) and cause you to bet accordingly. (The casino really doesn't care what you bet ON, only that you bet.) "Hey, 6 hasn't been hit yet, I'll bet on 6," they want you to think. But because each spin of the wheel--assuming the wheel is true--is a random event, that 6 is no more or less likely to come up than any other number. (And the switch the wheels often enough to that even if one had a proclivity to produce a particular outcome more frequently, it would be gone before anyone had a chance to calculate it.)
No hunches, no feelings, no sense of a hot table/machine/wheel/etc., not even a well-calculated chi-square analysis is going to help you discern the future.

I play mostly 6 deck shoes, because single or double deck tables have either too many other players or too high minimums. I decided to play heads up with the dealer on 6 deck shoes whenever possible. So far, heads up just means I lose more, faster. The emotional beating during heads up is even worse lol.

It is ideal to start fresh from the top of a shoe of course. But if you miss a few early rounds, you can still jump in, especially if the penetration of the game is very good. You just have to pretend the unseen cards in the disposal tray aren't there and are instead behind the cut card in the shoe for your remaining deck estimations.
It's usually not worth it if there is more than a full deck gone though. Typically, if I come to a table with a few cards in the tray (like a half deck perhaps), I'll watch a couple rounds. And if the running count becomes a bit positive, I'll go ahead and sit down.

@@jameshewitt247 Interesting. I get what you're saying. I've only played blackjack where there is a traditional hole card check after an insurance offer from the dealer. Even so, and 11 vs. Ace is a very close descision to hit or double. Often enough, you would just hit under certain rule variations or negative counts. You definitely wouldn't double without the hole card check.
There should be strategy charts on the U.K. game. If the rules you describe allow a player to push a dealer blackjack if they were to get to 21, I'd still be inclined to only hit on that hand you describe(though I could be wrong). But I thought that in European rules, a dealer blackjack would be an automatic win for them (or a push if the player were dealt a 2 card blackjack).
In any case, the no-hole card doesn't sound like an exploitable game for the player.

@@stevenhelgason8190 this is why the simple plus minus strategy isn’t good enough anymore. You need a strategy that can uncover more advantage situations and help prevent you from raising your bets when you actually have a disadvantage. You need a strategy that will help you play all of the hands more accurately. You simply have to keep a separate count of Aces for this. The player advantage is based on the total possible combinations of converting stiff hands into pat hands. Fewer possible combinations help the player. Removing a 5 from the deck eliminates 5 combinations. But removing a 2 from the deck eliminates only 2 combinations. Drawing a 2 can’t ever produce a 19,20, or 21. Drawing a 2 can only produce a 19 when the dealer hits a soft 17 only. When playing a 6 deck shoe game, you can have many more 5vs gone than 2s. At these times, you can have an advantage even if your simple plus minus count is negative. You will also be hitting 16 vs a 10 when you should be standing. You need a 5 and only a 5 to beat a 20. The reverse is also true. You can have a plus count , but because more 2s are out than 5vs, you will have a disadvantage when you think you have an advantage. You will stand on 16 vs a ten when you should be hitting. Look at basic strategy for single deck. You stand on 77 vs a 10 even though it’s just 14, yet you hit 15 and 16. This makes sense because your odds of getting a 3rd 7 is not very good. Only a 7 will beat a 20. Of course you would surrender if you could. But playing a 6 deck shoe game, you will hit. I played primarily against a single deck and could remember the some exact cards that had been played. When my count was even or close to even, I stood on 15 vs a ten when 6s had been played. This helped me reduce my losses on these bad hands that come up often. This concept also occurs when the dealer shows a 9, but to a lesser extent because it takes 2 cards to beat a 19.
