But nowhere does anything say the merger ensures I am given creative control of the Trek franchise. Dang.
Bummer dude
I'm pulling for you man
I was supposed to get creative control of Star Trek. They offered that to you too?
We have to have a duel to determine who gets creative control, first with the lirpa, then with the ahn'woon.
If your an executive, you can literally fail for years and get hired by a competitor immediately. Like this dude oversaw peacock and the downfall of universal in the theatres. And thats before you talk about him being fired for sexual harassment last year. Insane the thought processes of people far beyond our means.
You see it in every big industry - finance, entertainment, sports. Once you're in 'the club,' you're in. Sometimes people are able to do better. Sometimes not.
It's a mediocre boys club. Those types always protect each other so they always remain in charge
Oh no!!!! Water damage sucks. I hope it was all taken care of quickly.
Luckily it was pretty isolated
@@DanMurrellMoviesI had a whole kitchen cieling fall out. After the water cut off, it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought. Fixed in a 2 days.
In Germany the insurance company pays for it very quickly
Throughout all these negotiations, my first question is always "What happens to Star Trek?"
Now it's time for the most important question. What does this mean for the Star Trek franchise?
My thoughts exactly
This is probably best case scenario for a lot of people involved. Anyone else would come in and strip it for parts and layoff even more people.
I agree - unfortunately, job losses were inevitable. I think this was the best scenario you could probably hope for given the other options (buyout and stripped for part or no merger/buyout and potentially catastrophic losses).
Paramount will be dismantled because the melting cable bundle is making the business uneconomic. It will be not be alone.
The entire industry will be smaller and less profitable.
Bad news: Lots of you will be fired.
Good news: The new owners can’t do anything until 2025.
They should call it the Central Access Bundle for Listing Entertainment, or, ya know, CABLE.
Kept away from the news just to hear your breakdown
With the merger, you'll now have John Lassiter working for Paramount Animation. With his storytelling and the TMNT animators, Paramount could give Disney/Pixar a run for their money, especially with Brad Bird on board.
Very happy to hear this news, and that Paramount won't be stripped for parts. And unusual in our supercapitalist world that a business decision is made with consideration for any other factor other than the biggest pile of money in the shortest amount of time, and screw the long-term consequences. Props to Shari Redstone for standing her ground and David Ellison for making it happen.
Skydance will be selling loads of Paramount off to think otherwise is delusional.
Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
Lay offs suck but this is the best case scenario for one of the Hollywood's oldest institutions
I'm glad it's not another Disney/Fox situation where 20th Century Fox only exists in name only, but they could still make Paramount a little less mega. Like sell off some of the cable channels since more and more people are cutting the cord.
they fired him for sexual harassment and then a competitor hires him and promote him... the system is broken
That thing about the dude that was fired now being back at the top of a leadership role for a huge company made me so angry.
Why? he wasn't fired for sexual harassment it was because of a decade long affair with an employee.
@@Ushio01stfu, stop spreading lies for no reason. Literally google the guys name and you’ll find articles about what happened and him openly admitting to it. An affair can also involve sexual harassment, it’s not one or the other.
Greetings from Houston... Hilariously it sounds like you got it worse from Tropical Storm Beryl that my house did 1 mile away away from the Gulf with Hurricane Beryl... Hopefully everything is okay! Love the videos!
How soon until i can pay $150 a month for all streaming services combined?
Dan; saving me from thinking while wearing plaid & a nice cap, always a treat❤
Seems like the best solution for everyone involved. Job losses were bound to happen anyway.
Network TV > Cable > Streaming > Cable again
The circle of life
Don't be silly. Someone will just devise a plan that, for a singly monthly fee, you will be able to watch content from a number of sources. ....... wait a minute.......
Only now, everyone but the executives make significantly less money and show renewals are based on an algorithm
You forgot the most important part. Cable again *except now they don't have to pay residuals to the writers who give a backbone to the content they rake in the dough from.
It's very different.
The cable bundle worked because to get what you wanted you had to pay for everything.
Streaming bundles are discount bins you pay for what you want but if what you want is available in a cheaper bundle you get a discount.
@@Ushio01re: "The cable bundle worked because to get what you wanted you had to pay for everything...."
Not really. There were typically several tiers of pricing with cable TV that allowed pretty much the same thing.
An earlier commenter made a good point about the lack of a residuals system for older shows and movies on streaming services, though.
Does anyone know if there was a residuals system for the old physical media rental systems (other than the fee attached to the original purchase of the media)? I suspect not.
I do wonder what this means for (lets say) "international assets" like C5 (in the UK) and TEN (in Aus)
Paramount and Disney are the only 2 streaming channels I keep enrolled in. There's always something new to watch. The others I might watch for a month to catch up and then cancel again. I don't understand why paramount is struggling.
Brilliant video Dan! It was so wet on Monday, torrential, I was in Arkansas on holiday and saw it! I hope your house repairs go smoothly and quickly.
Thank you, Dan!!
I really like this kind of news. Greetings from Germany
This is the video I have been waiting for. Great analysis.
Dan, dehunidifiers and fans to make certain that dry air is circulating in any area that got wet (I've been there). Good Luck!
Good morning, Sir Murrell
Thanks Dan!
Skydance only has 250 non-animation employees and produce 12 projects a year, Paramount has 21,000 employees and produces 450+. I don't think the layoffs will be that horrendous.
Some crazy succession shenanigans going on in the background. Bonkers
I wonder if the anti-trust agreement will be changed so that studios can own theaters again.
The Paramount Accords were revoked in 2020, so it's already legal for studios to own theaters again.
Also, with the recent Supreme Court decision, EXPECT more monopolies in the coming years.
@@AlexP-dz7ewand the downfall of the American empire… gotta love it
woah, I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since you started this channel. Feels like just yesterday 😵💫
Another win for TOM CRUISE 😂
Nice lighting
Bundle... Cable all over again.
So your saying that their should be a single source on the Net where we can see all the Flix, and then maybe we will all chill on all the multiple streaming sources? What a crazy idea.
Hope this merge will for the best of Paramount and specially films!
Best outcome of a bad situation. Happy to see Paramount bought out by another studio rather than a private equity firm. As for the job losses, it's always sad, but...people will find new jobs lol.
I really didn't understand the reasonings behind the Class B shareholder "revolt"... all any buyer needed to do was to buy National Amusements which automatically gives you control of the majority of Class A shares. There is nothing the Class B shareholders could do about it, if you don't like the set-up, you shouldn't have bought the shares.
I think it was how much was being paid to Class A versus Class B - to me, it wasn't so much not being in control, but that the voting shares were being compensated so much more than the non-voting shares. Part of what got the deal done was Skydance offering to pay more for Class B.
@@DanMurrellMovies That's the reason you don't buy out the Class B shares... Just purchase National Amusements, then you control 70% of the voting stock... Have Paramount Global merge with Skydance to pay yourself back... nobody can stop that once you buy National Amusements... there is no need to pay a premium to buy other Class A or Class B stock, you already control the company. Same thing happened with Porsche and VW, the parent company of Porsche bought the parent company of VW and then had VW buy the Porsche assets to to pay off the merger.
The more major studios making films and show is better. It gives more creators a chance.
I mean I hate to say it but with the performance of paramount the last couple years all the options were going to come with job losses no matter what deal happened
I think it wouldn't matter what deal Paramount took. People -will- lose jobs regardless.
ah yeah, corporate drama is what I'm here for
Can’t help but think of the ending of Succession …
Listen, I’m sure this is good and all for both companies but at the end of the day, Paramount needs to get with the times and stop sending their movies straight to digital and streaming if they wanna make money and not be put in a position like this again, where they have to sell.
I'm a Paramount Plus subscriber as well as owing several shares And a Star Trek fan as well as several other Paramount films and TV shows
Sounds like a win/win
Except for the Job loss
Hopefully they get an excellent severance
As a Star Trek fan, I'm hopeful. Hope all is well with the house, Dan.
Re: Jeff shell,
Crazy how many disingenuous ppl will say accusing a man of sa is worse than a woman experiencing sa, yet here are the actual consequences of coming forward, a promotion!
They had an affair, didn't they?
It was an affair not sexual harassment.
@@kevikiru To the crazy it's the same thing as woman never feel safe to say no to white men.
@@Ushio01An affair can also involve harassment. He admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with an employee and there was evidence to back up the harassment allegations.
4bn to shareholders, 2.5bn in "efficiency" savings..... yeah.... good luck with that
All the companies WANT to create a streaming magabundle that costs, exactly the same as cable does today + they want ad revenue + they want to sell all your data.
Good luck with that. I want just one simple service without any ads and not willing to pay more than $20.
Also Skydance deal is a shame: Paramax would have been a great name :(
Back on top is crazy 😂
water damage is kind of the worst, hope you and mara are all good.
Dan, how do you see the ongoing industry crisis affecting UA-camrs, potcasters etc.?
Honestly, as long as they keep producing movies and shows, I feel like it will be minimal going forward. I can say, though, that when production has slowed due to COVID and the strikes, I saw a big impact due to lack of compelling things to review, or at least lack of the larger movies and shows that are tentpoles for this channel.
Hey Dan! I hope you see this, do you live in Arkansas? That's where I am! Any tips on how to start being a critic?
Work on developing your own unique voice, don't be afraid to share your opinion even if it doesn't match 'the consensus,' and never lose your love of movies. Those three things have been hugely helpful to me over the years.
I hope the new Paramount will join in with Movies Anywhere. I would love to add their titles to my digital collection
I would hope they could spare a few hundred million for some good redundancy packages.
I cannot wait to see how Kendall, Roman and Shiv screw this up...
"Hey Paramount, it's David Ellison. So...I just wanted to get the gang together early in my tenure to say...yo!"
So does this mean Spyglass now works under Skydance?
oh goodie, another company rebranding itself as a tech company. We're not making movies! We're making a multi sense consumable tech product!
So Star Trek 4 is going to get delayed even more. Fantastic! (this is sarcasm)
I think the need for merged streaming services is important. Apple+ can be independent because Apple. Netflix because Netflix and Disney is big enough and is already merging in stuff. But especially the smaller rest need to be merged to be attractive.
The lost jobs are sad, but inevitable - even without a merger.
Hope you are ok with the water!
Just awful news :( more job losses and consolidation...
Thought this dude lived in LA. He’s been in Arkansas this entire time?
Since October of 2020.
Shari's Shares? It doesn't seem real.
Calling the merger a bad thing because people will lose their jobs is not right in this case.
If nothing will be done Paramount in it's total will stop to exist and many more people will lose their job.
Was Skydance a trillion dollar company like say MS I would agree but this is the best that can happen even tough it's unfortunate if some people will be losing their jobs.
Oh for f***** sake. Stay the hell away from Oracle. Stay far away from Oracle. Oracle is the kiss of death for a lot of things.
So... is this good or bad if i want deep space 9 season 8?
A. Don't go woke or this is a complete waste of time
B. Figure out how to compete w Netflix's model and then supplement with unique tent pole projects and content
Pretty disugsting that skydance not only hired Jeff Shell but are keeping John Lasseter as the head of the animation department. I hate that there seems to be no acountbilty in the indusrty, and how if your rich and famous enough you will be "forgiven". I can't tell why for even just just PR stand ponit you have two pepole who have been fired for Sexual harassment in major postions at this new company.
Both were fired from their old positions. It’s not like zero punishment was handed.
Can I make a request? Maybe this can be on contextual basis, but if you're going to use screenshots of articles in the video, can you maybe crop out the side bar? I'd personally appreciate it. That first article headline over there is a bit on the spoilery side if you haven't watched the most recent House of the Dragon, and I'd rather not see that in a video that's not even about that.
I can’t because then the headline would be cut off. I guess I assumed people wouldn’t be paying attention to the sidebar on the screenshot of an article.
@@DanMurrellMovies Most probably aren't. It's just something that immediately jumped out to me.
Back on top might not be the best way to phrase that indeed ahahahhahahahahhahahahahhaha
Paradance?
Skymount?
Parasky?
MountDance?
No "New Paramount" bro 😳
There’s no scenario where a bundled streaming service results in customers paying less.
Hope this doesn’t affect future projects like the Transformers/GI Joe crossover movie, the Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, the next SpongeBob movie and more.
The fact that Byron Allen offered $14 Billion and was refused only for Paramount to accept an $8 Billion offer from the Ellisons is very telling…
Those were not the same kind of offer. Byron Allen was offering $14 billion to buy the company outright and take it private. The deal also reportedly would have involved selling off several assets, including the movie studio. Skydance is investing $8 billion to merge and keep it public, and keep the company intact. I don't think race (which I believe is what you're implying) was a factor here.
@@DanMurrellMovies ahhh okay cool, that makes a lot more sense. I heard he initially wanted BET and they didn’t want to break off bits and pieces of the company so he made the $14 billion offer. Thanks for clearing that up for me Dan 🙏🏾 (gonna keep my comment up in case anyone else had the same initial thought I did)
Byron Allen definitely did show interest in buying BET as a standalone asset, as did Tyler Perry. A lot of people (including me) think that not selling at that time was a big tactical mistake by Bob Bakish, the former Paramount CEO. He also turned down a deal for Showtime that I think he should have taken.
@@DanMurrellMovies same here! I feel like BET is a shell of what it used to be when I grew up and Allen may have been able to turn it around rather than being another dead asset. As much as I respect Tyler Perry’s business acumen I fear he may have just wanted to turn it into the Tyler Perry Channel creatively
Maybe if Comcast ever decide to sell NBCUniversal Byron Allen could buy Universal studio that could be another major change in Hollywood
I get the impression the Redstone's never built anything from scratch and just bought Paramount/Viacom. So I don't care what any of them think.
If I had a nickel for every time John Lasseter is in charge of another major movie motion picture studio following a merger, I'd have two nickels. And a ton of frustrated female animators.
Thank God Paramount remains in American hands!!!
Are you sure you know how to build houses over there at the states?
It was related to some defective work that had been done earlier in the day.
@@DanMurrellMovies Not a good day to install a Skydance... errr, skylight?
