    I just loved the authenticity- the lettering, everything. In about 1957, ( aged 10) I saw a Junior 60 hanging up in the model aircraft section ,at the back of the famous Hamleys'toyshop. I was amazed at the 'SHEER SIZE' of the model, and have loved the understated subtlety of the design ever since !.....

    Many years ago I saw a Junior 60 flown off Epsom Downs.The owner asked us to watch whilst he started up and released the model.
    Free flight it took off steadily,climbed and flew some beautiful circuits.The engine cut and the plane made a gentle landing."It does that every time" said the proud owner!

    Congratulations!!! And yes, the Junior 60 is a fantastic plane. To me, it has no equal. I've made more than 12 over a 30 year period. I just sold each one and build another, and another and another. Albert Hatful was a genius!!!!

    A real blast from the past watching this. As a kid back in the late 60’s RC gear was way too expensive for me so I flew free flight. Was always envious of the older guys who flew RC models. When I was in a position later to afford the gear I had a young family and no time. Just retired recently and your video has rekindled my interest. Your Junior 60 looks great and I like that you’ve kept everything in period. Cheers.

    From one Brian to another thanks for video. Takes me back to 1960 at the Basingstoke Model Aircraft Club in an old Anderson shelter on Basingstoke Station platform where I built a Jnr 60 and fitted a McGreggor single channel radio in it and an ED Racer the same as yours which I still have and still runs, those engines are bullit proof. I hope to use it again soon. Happy flying and all the best.

    Very nice. I have a Lanzo bomber scaled down to 60" with an Ohlsson 23 sideport on ignition, and a Playboy Sr, with a Super Cyclone on ignition. I also have quite a few control line planes with Super Cyclones, Orwick 64, and Anderson Spitfires. All of my planes are either silkspan or silk, finished with dope.
    I have a Brit Taurus with a 68" span and 850 square inches with an Orwick 64. Great flying control line plane. It won the Vintage Stunt Champs in Arizona three years in a row. I love old ignition engines and have restored many to better than new condition. I have one diesel, a Tornado 15, but have never run it.
    Anyway. That Junior 60 looks like a great flying plane. I may have to build one this winter. I enjoy all your engine running videos. I do a lot of that myself. Old engines and old plane designs are to much fun.

      Hi Jim, Thanks for your comments. Apologies for taking so long to reply. I’ve had a lot of work over the last couple of months.
      I’m familiar with your Taurus, I’ve seen photos. When I was very young (forties), we lived close to the Aeromodeller offices (at Eaton Bray airfield), and most of the Aeromodeller staff lived close to us (in Leighton Buzzard). John Coasby, who was the Aeromodeller draftsman and who designed your Taurus and several other super planes, lived close to me (less than half a mile).
      As you can see, I love playing with spark engines, but I’ve never actually flown one. I hope to do it one day, but it’s getting a bit late and I have so many things to do!
      Above all, Thanks for your interest!

      Thanks Ed. Don't be surprised by the Racer. My plane was built from the first Junior 60 plan (1946), which was for free flight of course. But when the second version of the J60 was published, in 1955, the ED Racer engine was actually shown on the plan, so the Racer really is (or should be) THE standard engine for a Junior 60. • @TestECull
      @TestECull 4 роки тому

      @@briancox3691 yeah I run my glow mills a bit rich on the ground too. They all lean out a bit when they take flight. I usually find peak then richen until I hear an audible drop in revs.
      If I could get a diesel with a proper airbleed or TN carb on it, and if I could readily acquire fuel, I'd probably get and fly one. I just cannot get ether of sufficient purity in my area(Starting fluid is usually mixed with a bunch of other volatiles because people were abusing purer blends as an intoxicant), nor can I easily get a ready-mixed fuel. Kerosene and castor are no big deal to acquire but ether is.

    Hi Brian, lovely J60 which flies great, lovely to see. Could I please ask a question about the J60 drawing on your knowledge of spark ignition engines? I have a Forster 29 which I would like to put in a J60 I am building, do you think that it would have sufficient power? I know the original KK engine was bigger than this. I am building from Ben Buckle plans. Really appreciate your thoughts please.

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mark,
      Firstly, all Forsters are good engines, and the early rear-disc 29 is superb, fast and powerful.
      You won’t have a power problem!
      As you’re just starting with sparkers, it will be important to get the operation thoroughly sorted on the bench, before installing the engine in a plane. If you need any help, just shout. Like most things in life, it’s difficult when you don’t know and dead easy when you do know!
      The only real difference between bench operation and flying is that, in the plane, the ignition on/off switch has to be replaced by a servo-operated switch (dead easy with a micro-switch), so that you can switch off in flight. This is needed as there is a risk of destroying the coil and battery if you have a long glide with the points closed.
      Finally, you’re building the original 1946 J60. As you probably know, there is also an original 1955 version, still by Albert Hatfull of course, and which was also the Flair kit. I’ve built several of both and, in my opinion, there’s no doubt whatsoever that the 1955 version is far better structurally. I hope to build another J60 and it will be a 1955 plan, but using the 1946 wood sizes aft of the wing.
      I look forward to your spark ignition adventures. Be warned, you’re more or less bound to get harmless but uncomfortable electric shocks in your fingers at some stage. It’s happened to all of us!

    • @MarkRobinson555
      @MarkRobinson555 2 роки тому

      Thank you Brian for such a helpful and friendly response, its really appreciated. Great to hear that they are good engines and will have sufficient power, the one I have is a rear disc, one of the slightly later ones with the ball bearing, from around 1948 I believe. Its also got twin points which was an optional extra, so you could switch from idle to full speed, be interesting to see how this works - do you have any experience with these, I have also seen them on O&R in MAN adverts? Good advice regarding the coil switch, thank you. I wasn't aware of the 1945 and 1955 difference, so I will be looking at the plans, I think the 55 are on OuterZone, thanks for the tip. Hahah electric shocks, all part of the fun! Thanks again, I really appreciate your reply.

    Its beautiful, and enjoyable to watch Brian, Thanks very much. How did you get that beautiful 'patina' on the wings ? is it stained dope or has it oxidized over the years. Thanks

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691  7 років тому +5

      Thanks for your kind comments. The "patina" is due to the fact that, doping the tissue in around 2010/2012, I used a couple of tins of dope from the early seventies! The British dope (HMG) was still perfect, but the French dope had turned a dark treacle colour. Anyway, I mixed them up with a lot of thinners (the dope had thickened a bit with age) and a few drops of castor oil, and the result is what you see. In the future, I shall be trying to get a similar result, but intentionally! No one seems to realise that with synthetics, everyone has exactly the same red, the same yellow, the same "antique", etc. and, for me, it's awful. This synthetic uniformity is totally non-vintage and makes model finishes boring to look at. For me, it just "doesn't look right"!

      This engine is the most produced version of all the Racers, and it's also one of the best. All the original company Racers (pre 1970) were great engines. And the plane is very easy to build, but I prefer the later (1955) version.

    You have a new fan Brian.
    I had a J60 decades ago with an 0S20 four stroker.
    Flew beautifully.
    I will build another one when I have finished black magic.
    Both will have ED Racers!
    Question...if I may Sir?
    On the black magic plan it has the ED racer inverted.
    Clearly it looks nicer all cowled in but a bit dangerous to lift up and adjust compression?
    I will be in view of other club members who might have something to say.
    So should for safety I keep it upright?
    J60s are the best model EVER.
    Peter

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691  2 роки тому

      Hi Peter, Personally I don't have anything against inverted running, providing the engines are side-port or rear disc (Mills, Comp Special, Racer, Hunter, etc.). With normal front rotary you have the problem of fuel running out of the carburettor, so I apply that rule, but it's only my opinion.
      However, I always feel that if you're using a nice old engine, then you want to see it!
      There's not much point in using a super old engine that you want to drool over, and then hiding it inverted inside a cowling. So I always mount my favourite old engines upright for that reason, and it obviously applies to your Black Magic.
      My next build will be the Halfax Spartan, which I think inspired Albert Hatfull for the J60. The Spartan originally used a fully cowled inverted O&R sparker. Mine will have an early ED 3.46 proudly sitting upright in the breeze and fully visible!

      Hi Brian.
      I totally agree with mounting a vintage engine upright!
      Why hide what I love and have polished up!
      There is a PAW that I like even more than the 60.
      It is the PAW 40 TBR RC.
      I like this more so because it has what seems to be a longer finned area than the 60.
      If you get what I mean?
      It is an engine that really I must have.
      What do you think about putting it in a Ben Shereshaw Cumulus at 96" wing span?
      I have built and flown the mini version with a tiny PAW.
      It flew beautifully and reluctantly came down!
      The bigger version should fly beautifully.
      Thanks for your stats on on PAW 60 engine running time and tank sizes.
      I would like to swap email addresses with you as I feel we have a lot in common.
      I am an old timer ( 71) hanging out in Australia.
      Diesel fuel unobtainable here so we have to make it.
      Balsa wood...hard to get.
      Quarter grain?...impossible.
      We have to do with what we can get.
      If the balsa is inferior I have to thicken it up when stripping it from the plank.
      I was never in the war but vintage modelling now must be very similar to those days of work with what you can get.
      Dope ...no probs.
      Heavy weight tissue...…whats that?
      I think you know what I mean.
      So whats your take on the glorious looking POW!!!! 40 TBR RC?

      Thank you for taking the time to reply too me, the reason I asked this question was that my late father had told me, when I was a child, that he was a good model builder, always balsa and you didn't want too be around when somebody commented that they had just purchased a ready built aeroplane to fly and it was PLASTIC ha ha , honest hand on heart my dad respected all forms of model making but aeroplanes were where is heart was, he purchased a KK Ladybird model and so began the hours of intense studying of width, length and that was just about where he intended too build the aeroplane, but over the coming months I watched as my father regained and found the old art of balsa model making, so once again thank you kind sir for your reply and may you find kind zephyrs .

      Hi Charles, it's 2.46cc (a .15). It wasn't gliding as well as it can. It was the first flight, I was nervous and I kept full down trim on, to get it back down quickly! Otherwise, they float around very well.

      My old timers fly more or less like the original free flight, just with a minimum of RC, to keep the plane close to me, and I try to use an original engine.
      I fly "modern RC" as well, but with modern planes.

      That sure seams a lot more dangerous that the nonsense about batteries posted earlier, and unless you at an actual flying field most places frown on glow power planes. I have a SIG Kadet 78" wing, running 6s that will will take off quicker than glow and doesn't bother anyone. FYI that's one of the best looking planes ive seen, ever put it in a contest?

    • @briancox3691
      @briancox3691  7 років тому +2

      It might "seem dangerous" to you, but I've been flying toy planes since 1948 and I've never had a serious accident...
      Stay with your supersonic Kadet, and I'll just keep flying my old planes, with old engines, and we'll all be happy...

      What point did I miss?
      I just thought some people might like to see my old plane, that's all.
      I'm not interested in discussing modern electric stuff, or sterile safety/danger discussions. There are other places for that. This is just my Junior 60.
      All my other planes have throttles, but this J60 is simply what I wanted it to be.

      Hi, Thank you for you kind comments.
      The white covering is English "Modelspan" tissue and the orange and black are Japanese tissue as you suggest...
      The dope is nitro cellulose (40 years old!) and the fuel is English commercial diesel fuel, as shown in some of my other diesel running videos.
      Thank you again for your interest!!!

      Thanks Cliff, I liked your little Guillows project and I'm looking forward to the continuation. Just to make you smile, I didn't realise that your A cert video was a simulator. I thought the plane looked nice, and I wondered why the engine operated like electric but sounded like IC... Anyway, I looked down the comments, in the hope of identifying the plane... In mitigation, I've never used or even seen a simulator...

      "If our reliable, ultra-light RC systems had been available 70 or 80 years ago, none of these planes would ever have been flown free flight".

      OK, if you're satisfied with electric that's fine.
      Some people, like Eduardo and myself, want an "old timer" to be the way it really was... Not a modernized version that just vaguely looks like an old design...

    • @Edubarca46
      @Edubarca46 8 років тому

      I agree with Brian, you got my idea immediately. I dislike electrics because they have, in my opinion, some disadvantages which I find unacceptable: First of all, there is no noise!! One of the nicest things about glow or diesel engines is noise, even with traditional muffler. Second, electrics are dangerous, well, I mean the batteries. I've seen several models catching fire due to battery problems, third, diesel or glow keeps the model as it was originally designed. Is like restoring a 1955 Cadillac and install an MP3 or similar modern sound equipment!! Also, electrics are more cumbersome and expensive. Those batteries are heavy and expensive and one must have several for a days flying. And before you comment, although the original J60 was free flight, when we are no longer young, the small sin of installing RC must be committed in order not to chase the model all over the countryside when we can no longer move as we used to!!!
