The Pakt backpack is now available and is very similar to the duffel but with shoulder straps, a removable hip belt that doubles as either a sling or belt bag, a large waterproof pocket on top, and some other cool features.
I am a new subscriber. And i must say Matt you are amazing! Usually such videos never gets my interest for more than 5-10 min, but i watched most of your videos in just 2 days! Its real! Its just what i need in my life. Thank you!
I'm not even what I'd call a minimalist, but this is about 3X more stuff than I've ever taken on a week long trip. I usually carry a lightweight backpack (a bookbag, really) and fill it about halfway... 3 shirts, 3 pair of underwear and socks, an extra pair of pants, and cargo-type shorts, phone charger, toiletries. I wash in the sink if there's no laundry service.
@@annie-tu1oy You're right, and I agree with everything you said. I was just expecting to find a few tips on how to pack even lighter than I already do, and I was amused by how much stuff this guy crammed into that bag, lol... Also, I do always pack swim trunks and flip-flops, I forgot to mention those. I don't mind the washing in the sink, it only takes 10 minutes, but you're right about it being unnecessary since I have plenty of room in the bag for a few more changes.
I found your channel recently and I love your calm videos, they are really calm and nice to watch daily, you have a nice life. I love you video, editing styles and narration.
I love that you take a minimalist approach to word usage as well. Your narration is funny, the camera angles are great, and the information is great. Definitely subbed.
Ichi Dan I wouldn’t say so just if your going somewhere cold for a little bit check the weather for the near future and if it’s prodicted to be cold skip the short and pack a warmer coat if you have one And gloves are a must btw
haha i was playing dota and someone asked me that like 100 times cuz he was mad so i came on this and saw this comment and the first thing that came to mind was that.
kimonaNo1 Yeah, agreed. I travel/fly a ton for work and I could never have a bag without wheels. These types of bags always look so damn cool, I wish they worked for me, but I gotta have wheels.
God, I NEED THIS BAG! I am not a minimalist (well kinda, but not as much as you tho) BUT I like practicality, especially while traveling (I travel a bit, so I have to pack and unpack frequently, plus, I like to know quickly where every little thing is, in order to reach it easily, and not undo the whole suitcase to find what I need) Love your videos!
I feel the same way about wanting to be able to actually see where my stuff is! Pakt now has a backpack which I like even better than the duffel (both currently on sale as of 11/2022), but I'm torn between the more elegant style of the Pakt bags and the even greater visibility of the Cotopaxi Allpa, which has mesh on both sides and the laptop sleeve on the back. There's also the ebags Motherlode Jr., but I don't know if I can handle the orange interior! I really wish more bag makers would use the suitcase-style clamshell design!
Jack Reacher (the movie) taught me how to pack as a minimalist. Always wash your cloths especially tops and underwear overnight so you can keep wearing it on the next day. 2 or 3 tops/underwear/pair of socks is good enough to travel for a long period.
Another great video. 👍 Always a good policy to pack at least one extra pair of underwear and socks. One never knows. :) Any chance of convincing Natalie to do a Girl’s Version of the video? Guys have so much less to pack. Please help your sisters out, Natalie! Great bag! If there are plans for a 2.0 version, I’ll add a vote to the “wheels” column.
Check out professional tour guide Sarah Murdoch's packing videos! Top tip: literally weighing each item and packing what's lightest (she can fit 4 or 5 utlra-light light tops in the space of ONE t-shirt). Also mix-and-match capsule wardrobe, and cool product recommendations like ultralight yet comfortable shoes, and lightweight undies that dry quickly (On Gossamer, fruit of the loom mesh...). She has one video where she used a school size backpack with 15lbs. for two weeks and watching her unpack 7 (or more?) tops, 3 bottoms, a dress, jacket, toiletries, etc. AND a full-size down pillow was like a magic trick! Also like her Eileen Fisher video (no Eileen Fisher required).
For clarity, Button up refers to the type of shirt (a shirt with buttons), a buttondown refers to the collar of a shirt. if the shirt has buttons for the lapel, it is considered a buttondown because you can button down the lapel so they don't curl. the buttons on the collar were introduced years ago during polo tourneys to stop the colar from rolling and looking bad.
A button up is a shirt that closes with buttons on the center-front, a button down is a shirt with those little buttons that hold down the corners of the collar
Great video and I love the bag too. It seems the key to being a minimalist though is wearing Tshirts and shorts every day? No business suit, shirts, slacks, ties, or jiujitsu gi in that bag.
Weeell, gotta sat it's just amazing. I've watched lots of your videos so far (maybe not all of them, but lots) and I must say the way you film and the way the result looks and "feels" is completely outstanding. Although I'm not a filmmaker and not connected with that field in any kind, so I probably can't fully appreciate the work you do, I still think it's more than fantastic. I really really love it just as all your works I've watched so far. And yeah, The Ground Up Show is one of the best podcast I've ever found (and I've had found quite many different). I suppose I should also watch it on UA-cam... Well, sorry for a long one, I'm so thankful that there's you here on UA-cam! Thank you very much for what you're doing. Good luck in everything!
sweetdreams334766 judging by the specs on the bag, absolutely. But then again i can pack 2-4 days worth of stuff toiletries included into my swissgear travel backpack so I am looking forward to this one as a i got a week of stuff and snow gear bag 😁

I would not get this bag instead I would get a backpack so I also can carry it when I go hiking. Keep up the good work :)
A button DOWN actually refers to buttons on the front of a shirt collar in order to keep the points of the collar laying flat on the shirt (which serves a similar function as collar stays). A button UP more popularly refers to a shirt that requires you to button it closed in the front.
how lovely it must be to be a man! I have to think of things like makeup, shoes that work well with a "night out outfit", gym gear, layers for unexpected weather changes, and of course us bosomed ladies have these salad-bowlesque bras that take up too much room. Very clever, although not having a camera case/strap makes me cringe a little!
It's easy to pack as a woman too, I traveled with my 18 L Kånken bag in Japan for three weeks without any issues. For essentials you don't really need all those extra clothes and shoes, that goes for makeup too, just keep it basic for the face, a small bottle of foundation, mascara and a browpen or something, what more could you possibly need if you're travelling minimalistic? I guess the packing differs from what kind of traveling you're doing but I personally think less is more. Way less carrying and haggling with all the extra weight. You can just roam around freely. It also feels safer carrying everything on you rather than worrying about missing luggage :)
hide your socks or cables etc between your bra when you fold it in half to save space, thats how i pack. you dont need makeup, i never travel without make up as its not an essential. i just wear a pair of sneakers and jeans or dress pants if im going out but its really not that hard to pack as a girl than if youre a guy so idm what youre complaining about 🤷♀️
You don't have to do any of these things, you choose to. You want to look good with make up and play dressing games while traveling, it's not a requirement.
It's really sad that you think you need all these things. I thought people who travel a lot were supposed to be free of these modern arbitrary trappings. I'm a girl, I don't wear makeup. And you can wear you standard sandals with a 'night outfit'. You don't 'have' to do any of that 'girl' stuff, it's a choice, and lots of those choices won't apply once you're somewhere culturally different...
Ever just get addicted to one specific UA-cam video and just watch it over and over again for no reason? well this is one of those videos for me idk why lol
Amazing video Matt! Just wondering how do you take your camera equipment out with you each day on your trip? Do you take it handheld or do you empty your main travel bag and just used that?
Great question. I usually carry my camera handheld. If I'm planning on doing a lot of hiking I will bring a small backpack with me (or use my partners). That way I can take my drone & batteries with me. It'd be great to find a small bag that could roll up into this one for those situations. After carrying my camera handheld for years I actually just dropped it for the first time in Maui. On the pavement. It tumbled five times down hill until I grabbed it. Lens was okay but my ego was shattered 😭
Thank you for taking the time to reply to this. Ah man I can't believe you dropped it. That is always a heart break moment :( Adleast the lens was okay though...
Matt D'Avella just happened to see your comment - if you're still looking, check out the outlander pack! It can fold into a little flat square, is super durable, and is like $15! For hikes, I just stuff my fragile items into a padded ape case (also collapsible) then into the bag. Together, the pack + case is just under 1lb!
That's a cool foldable bag right there. When you aren't using it you could easily stuff it into a drawer/wardrobe at home. Looks more comfy to carry that a basic drawstring bag that you get when you join gyms etc.
Where have you been all this time?? I’m so glad you started producing this kind of videos! I watched The Minimalist last year. Great work! But I like this series better! 😂
francesca francesca francesca francesca yeah I know, it was just a goofy joke. One of the things I like about Matt & The Minimalists is their emphasis on how it's a personal journey and not about arbitrary rules. I have different priorities, so when I travel I fit everything into a small backpack even if it means I spend time doing laundry when I'm away - I want to travel light and have fewer things to worry about - but I sacrifice a small amount of time and money to do so.
Pete Burrows Dude what's your problem? Going to every comment thread and saying he's not a minimalist. If you don't like his mindset or don't believe he's a minimalist just don't watch the videos and before saying that he's not a minimalist, at least know what minimalism is.
NicoBarbaros well technically minimalism is bringing only what u need. If he's going for 5 days then minimalism would be brining just 5 shirts if he doesn't want to wash them
@@backdraftmagnet when the issue is such a serious problem i think everyone should be sensitive about it.. what else is worth the joke to you, rape? cancer? you're in a channel where mindfulness is encouraged. that also come to words. be mindful of the words you put out in the world.
I just subscribed to your channel. Totally love the way you putting your contents with straight to the point message and humor. Keep up with the great work Matt :)
You pack more than I do and I pack a folding bike in my suitcase, but interesting nonetheless. I put all my clothes in a dry bag since I switch out my bike I rode to the airport or bus stop and use it as a carry on. The suitcase doubles as a fold out bike trailer. as well as a permanent storage space for my bike when I don't want to look at it at my home. The dry bag is a permanent storage space for my clothes, three sets per season and are usually stored in the floor storage space when I don't need them and each dry bag doubles as wash bag to clean the clothes and a shower for when I'm on a cycling tour around the world.
That's so funny. I love your skits man. You're awesome. By the way, I'm also a minimalist. I happen to start being a minimalist since I learned Lean Management and joined Nursing Quality in our hospital.

It also feels safer carrying everything on you rather than worrying about missing luggage :)
A girl doesnt need makeup they just wear it for some odd reason
hide your socks or cables etc between your bra when you fold it in half to save space, thats how i pack. you dont need makeup, i never travel without make up as its not an essential. i just wear a pair of sneakers and jeans or dress pants if im going out but its really not that hard to pack as a girl than if youre a guy so idm what youre complaining about 🤷♀️
You don't have to do any of these things, you choose to.
Bruh, I've never seen something that satisfying
>minimalist
>8 pairs of underwear
Pack some soap and an stretchy washing line for your room and you can half your clothing load
3:03 That ending was too good! Great vid.
enjoyed this :)
Man! I can't stress how awesome your color correction is. You should soooooo make a "how I edit my videos" video.
Where do you buy your tshirts from?
J Crew Factory.
thanks!
Love your sense of humor, man
Lmao the ending tho
Where have you been all this time?? I’m so glad you started producing this kind of videos! I watched The Minimalist last year. Great work! But I like this series better! 😂
Thank you!! 😆
In Australia the bag is 456$ it looks like a great bag but it's honestly not worth it
Matt, I love it!! This and the other minimalist video are my faves on your channel. Can't wait to see more! And now I have to check out your bag!
Man, that's a lot of stuff for a minimalist.
Kai Thompson right?!
My thoughts exactly
Well, minimalist can be about just have the absolutely necesaries for you. So, the number can be different.
francesca francesca francesca francesca yeah I know, it was just a goofy joke.
Far too much stuff and only suitable for summer! I really thought this whole video was a joke. Maybe it is?
Another great to the point video well filmed. I always enjoy watching your youtubes.. They are like watching short movies, always really well done.
Should have brought a second pair of pants
That's a cool bag, and I love your sense of humour and content
Gosh if that is a minimalist then what am I?! I pack even fewer things for a one week trip!
Poor people
I like how you packed that bag full without showing how heavy it is if you carried it brief case style.
That's like double the stuff I pack for a week
"Packing like a minimalist that doesn't want to smell" ;)
Pete Burrows Dude what's your problem? Going to every comment thread and saying he's not a minimalist. If you don't like his mindset or don't believe he's a minimalist just don't watch the videos and before saying that he's not a minimalist, at least know what minimalism is.
@Pete Burrows still you don't realise what minimalism is.
@Pete Burrows cool cool, but I think there's a difference between minimalism art and minimalism lifestyle
Well now Brent, look at how you've been increasing his watch time and commenting on everything for the algorithm. I guess you really like Matt.
that bag looked very functional n simple. i am falling in love with that design 😍
What about pants/jeans? lol
I wear my jeans.
Live in a hostel and a jeans ll serve you all montu
I always pack an extra pair of pants/jeans and two light knit sweaters, it's good to have a change of clothes
Are you... by any chance... A minimalist?
I love the wit, humour and sarcasm in your videos ;)
Wow u pack that much then Iam an ultra minimalist
The king of minimalism 🙌
Still toooo much for a minimalist ))
NicoBarbaros well technically minimalism is bringing only what u need. If he's going for 5 days then minimalism would be brining just 5 shirts if he doesn't want to wash them
Just watched this and minimalist apartment, you good sir have +1 new subscribers.
No socks? Pants? Phone and laptop chargers?
award-winning documentary, everywhere
Please don’t say OCD as a joke.
heheHhe
OCD as a joke
Deshiz Z sjw again ...
@@backdraftmagnet when the issue is such a serious problem i think everyone should be sensitive about it.. what else is worth the joke to you, rape? cancer? you're in a channel where mindfulness is encouraged. that also come to words. be mindful of the words you put out in the world.
YoYo mio you clearly no idea about that illness. How cruel and evil are you man 😐
I love your sense of humor! Very cool bag.
Lol so cute
I have looped the Minimalists podcasts and heard about you and your podcast through them.
I like your style and humour 💪🔥

This channel is awesome.I am binge watching.Subscribed!
Hey dude I'm from Philippines. Love your videos 😊😍
Not sure why I'm watching but the film shots are really satisfying
I just subscribed to your channel. Totally love the way you putting your contents with straight to the point message and humor. Keep up with the great work Matt :)
Your videos are always surprisingly funny and very enjoyable
this is weirdly the best video i have ever watched
Love your work. Dont understand why you don't have more subscribers :(
I just found your channel and it gave me the giggles! Your humor is on point as well as the content. Where can I get a bunch of those grey T-shirts?!
