My main strategy is to pack ahead of time. I've found packing last minute leads to pressured I-might-need-it thinking which makes me bring too much, so I strive to pack at least the day before. Another strategy is to place all the clothes I think I need to bring on the bed, review and review, switch out things so I can opt to create a few outfits from a minimum number of pieces, and bring only the results. Great video, Matt, and very helpful.

This has made me see there’s only that little that’s really essential in life. Choosing for an intentional life made it so much lighter. Thank Matt, for sharing, inspiring and being! This made, and still makes, all the difference.
I'm not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination but I did learn a lot (from youtube) about minimizing when I traveled halfway around the world last year. I traveled for 3 months with only a carry-on bag (an Osprey backpack) and a big purse. I had about a week's worth of clothes that were mix-and-match items to make it look like I had more clothes. After a couple of weeks I was getting tired of my clothes but after the first month I was like, yeah, I kinda like not having to worry about if my clothes look good - I already know they do whichever one I happen to pull out of the backpack that day. I love what you said here about - "I don't care what you think, this is what works for me". I had to remind myself of that for 2 different things - when I packed something that the youtubers were saying not to pack, and when my family insisted I'm going to regret getting a backpack instead of a roller, and not availing of checked-in suitcases. Anyway, there are a few things I would change - I'm still a bit wishy-washy on the backpack vs roller thing because it was really awesome being able to carry my bag everywhere even in non-roller-friendly terrain and not have to worry about the bag getting snatched when I'm not looking. But yeah, after a while it does get to be a hassle to strap in and out of the bag and there are days when I just didn't want to carry the thing. I can also relate to your "extra undies" thing. Especially being a woman who does sometimes get caught with "the flow" unprepared. It's just better to just throw the thing out instead of carrying the thing around until I get a chance to do laundry. Eeek.
Actually, learning to pack carry on only is what got me interested in minimalism! I used to be a chronic just-in-case overpacker but now I encourage everyone to only carry on. I try to do this on road trips as well. My wardrobe is pretty simple and is comprised if mostly black and white, so that makes it easy to make decisions about what to wear, though I am intrigued by the idea of a uniform, like you wear. (PS I love it that you mentioned your six siblings - I’ve got 7 kids myself and with 2 - almost 3 - grown up, and the best times are when we are all home together!) Also, two bags are hardly excessive, especially given the amount of camera gear you are able to fit in such a small, orderly space. Like you said, minimalism has to work for you and I’m learning to apply it to my life incrementally, though not every aspect of my life has been affected by it. I’m not sure if it ever will.
Packed with one bag while in Europe last year and it completely changed my trip. Didn't have to worry about lugging my stuff around, and focused more on the trip. Great vid Matt.
While I'm not a minimalist, I try to get as close as I can. Packing for travel has become a very enjoyable experience for me :) I remember when I was a kid, my parents would always tell me to get stuff "just in case"... and we ended up carrying around huge, heavy luggages for a 10 days trip. And I MAYBE used 40% of what I brought. 30 years later, I'm happy to bring ONLY what I use, and a carry-on luggage + a backpack is all I need too! It feels SO good :D Light on the shoulders, light in the mind. Cheers!
Great content as always Mat. I just came back from a 2 week trip to Japan. Brought with me The Solo New York - Backpack duffel and packed inside that is what i think to be the best pack-able backpack for me EVER: the Revelar E-pack. I definitely over-packed. I did bring my A6300 as well as my Surface. Was very minimal overall with my clothing but the point of this comment is this: The Revelar E-pack....that bag is dope! (no they did not pay me to say that)
You're amazing! The way you packed your stuffs, clearly shows, how well disciplined you are! Always learn so many things from your videos! Stay Blessed Sir! Love from India!
Your video has become an inspiration for me to hv less things in my life.I might be not yet minimalist yet.but I love how u show that minimalism doesnt really scary to follow for. Thanks Matt!!
I have the exact same suitcase and absolutely love it! I always travel carry on- last summer I went to Europe for three weeks and it worked perfectly. Just a tip- the bag is designed to put the clothing and soft stuff in the side that you can cinch down, while the mesh zipped part is for more fragile/ hard items because it has a more protective shell.
You need to know that I love your channel and it is helping me to learn english and train my ears with the language. Great videos, great ideas and great person!
Just want to say, I asbolutely love your videos Matt. I already lived my life just like yours before I started watching your videos but it's encouraging and reassuring to see someone else who is successful doing the same.
I moved to Spain about a year and a half ago and since then, I've been using the eBags Weekender to get around. It's big enough to carry my crap and I can sometimes get around checking it on airlines like Ryanair where they're super stingy with space. An extra pair of shoes, a couple pants and a few shirts will usually do it for me. I have the same philosophy on underwear in that I'll always pack one extra. If it's a bike trip, I have an Orucase, which is amazing for if you're a cyclist. Check your bike like a normal bag and generally all of my cycling clothing fits in there as well. Excellent video, Matt. Keep it up!
I'm just leaving for a 49 day long trip to South-Korea and Japan and my luggage setup look pretty similar to yours. One Carry-on roller bag and a medium size camera bag. I hope this setup is good because I have done some packing mistakes on past trips.
Random person here, but don't skip Jeju at this time of year. Its great! You might not know that you can also take a Busan to Fukuoka ferry. If you're gonna be in the city, you can get a cheap mask at any pharmacy but you might want to buy a higher quality one before you go. Its yellow dust season. Oh and don't miss the Korean east coast!
I have to say this: you’re my favourite person on youtube. Besides the exceptional quality, the colours, the edit, your appereance and the way you speak...I simply believe you are the best! Keep up with the good work, Matt! Lots of hugs from Romania
I am about to head home from a week long trip and just wanted to say that I found your channel while packing before I left. You inspired me to try to minimize the amount of belongings I travel with, and as I repack my bag I have discovered that I can definitely get away with bringing less on my next adventure.
After much trial and error I've finally reached the stage (since the past 4 years) where I can travel with just a carry on and my small handbag for 2 weeks. Toiletries, clothes, shoes etc! Sometimes I even walk with items I don't use (trying to work on that haha). Thanks for your awesome content. I'm a new sub (since January) and I think you're inspirational. Keep it up!
Is it weird that I find this oddly satisfying? Like I love Marie Kondo folding and organizing things into small spaces, so this is just makes me really happy
Moisture wicking cloths are a must for me. They can be washed out in the sink every night and worn the next day, depending how minimal you want to be. I have the same rule as you for underwear.
Planning the laundry, especially for longer trips, is quite useful too, if you want to travel light. I once did a 1-month trip around italy, with only a 40L backpack, and I planned the trip such that I would do laundry roughly at the end of each week. A lot of hostels have a laundry machine or service you can ask for, which makes this quite easy. This way, I only had to take clothes for 7 days, instead of for the whole month, which at least quite a lot of people I know do.
I use the Away Carry-On and a medium sized back-pack as well. Backpack is for essentials, suitcase is for the trip...I haven't checked a bag in years. Great video!
Packing is definitely a mini exercise in minimalism, I’ve moved and lived in a different city/country four times already, and with each time I had to pack all my belongings into two suitcases and one carry on + backpack. I’m moving again by the end of this year so I’m going to get to challenge my hoarding tendencies again 😅
Marie Kondo is highly overrated. The way she packs and organizes stuff is how my mom told me how to pack and fold clothes when I was just a little shit, almost 50 years ago. In Germany we'd call the Kondo way of organizing just "logical" or "rational" or "generally good housekeeping". Nothing to it.
Great video Matt! You've taught that happiness is nos achieved by leading a superficial life. People always say it, but you put it into reality, by living a meaningful life.
As someone who just had salmonella recently...i know exactly what Matt means haha man is damn right! The throwbacks to this salmonella story do keep me laughing though - he mentioned it in his last packing minimalist video too!
Speaking of packing things up, I think the most efficient way of reducing the weight of the luggage is by simply choosing a smaller bag/package so that you can start limiting the stuff you are carrying around. That works for me lately. I used to carry a very big one (70cm x 40cm x 25cm/35cm) and now I carry a way smaller one (50cm x 30cm x 20cm) and still end up with a few things unused in a 2-3 days trip.
The incase EO travel backpack has been an important part of my short trips, especially how tough regulations with airlines has gotten lately. Only pack what you need if needed buy something on holidays and donate when back. Works for me for a couple of years now and really enjoy travelling light. And the extra pair is a must
Another great one. Thanks for acknowledging that you can practice minimalism without being forced into “one bag travel” for every trip! Recently hooked on your channel - keep up the great work!
Yesterday I went to a picnic with my girlfriend, ex roommate and his wife. not including the food and their chihuahua, my ex roommate and his wife brought more stuff than you did for the weekend. also I would like to see what and how does your gf packs her luggage.
I went on a backpacking trip with my older brother in Nicaragua. I didn't know how to pack for a trip like that so I brought a small suit case. When my brother handed me a camping backpack that was when I learned to pack minimally. I had to last for 10 days in a foreign country with nothing but what I could fit on my back. It was a great learning experience and now I never travel with anything but carry-on. This saved me when I went to a wedding and the flight company lost my family's luggage I was the only person who showed up to the wedding in a formal outfit!😂
Two bags: one roller with all my clothes and toiletries and shoes and whatnot (I very very rarely travel for less than a week at a time) and then the Tenba 15 DNA Camera bag as my walk around bag. Fantastic camera bag, incredible quality, really really love it.
The North Face Base Camp Duffel is my best friend for travel. They got sizes from 20 litres up to 150 litres. I use the Medium size which is 70 litres, and it is one of the best buys I have ever made. I can fit everything in it easily no matter how long the trip is, if it is shorter, I can always throw in an extra pair of shoes or a sleeping bag if that is the case. Also, it is waterproof and extremely durable.

(no they did not pay me to say that)
I can't believe people judge others for being "more or less minimalist than them" - you want to take two bags? GO FOR IT :) love this video!
You're amazing! The way you packed your stuffs, clearly shows, how well disciplined you are! Always learn so many things from your videos! Stay Blessed Sir! Love from India!
Your backpack is the most innovative and useful backpack I've seen!! Love the secret compartments and how it can be assessed from multiple sides!😆
matt you have really changed my life and it's kinda crazy how your videos coincide with my day to day life. thank you so much !
5:19 "I don't know where I'm going... I'm..." 🤣🤣🤣
Your video has become an inspiration for me to hv less things in my life.I might be not yet minimalist yet.but I love how u show that minimalism doesnt really scary to follow for. Thanks Matt!!
bro we're traveling in a few days, perfect timing!
Enjoy the trip!
I pack my toiletries in a clear bag and in my carry bag/purse so I don't have to dig for it for the TSA security screens. Great video!
You need to know that I love your channel and it is helping me to learn english and train my ears with the language.
Great videos, great ideas and great person!
00:36 - 90% space taken up by Matt D'Avella dark green/charcoal t-shirts! Haha!
Just want to say, I asbolutely love your videos Matt.
I already lived my life just like yours before I started watching your videos but it's encouraging and reassuring to see someone else who is successful doing the same.
This bag is calling my name.
Calling my wallet
Calling me nothing !
“My glasses. I need those to see.”
I am about to head home from a week long trip and just wanted to say that I found your channel while packing before I left. You inspired me to try to minimize the amount of belongings I travel with, and as I repack my bag I have discovered that I can definitely get away with bringing less on my next adventure.
As a true minimalist, I'm using mushroom in the wild to 'travel'
After much trial and error I've finally reached the stage (since the past 4 years) where I can travel with just a carry on and my small handbag for 2 weeks. Toiletries, clothes, shoes etc! Sometimes I even walk with items I don't use (trying to work on that haha). Thanks for your awesome content. I'm a new sub (since January) and I think you're inspirational. Keep it up!
Pack and you will discover who you are the most.
I'm packing and leaving this Tuesday for a couple months and can only bring a few bags. This was FANTASTIC, so timely and useful. Thank you!
Waiting for the "I woke up at 5 AM-30 day challenge video" !!
Omgggg Matt like my response 😍😍 I can die now.
I meant this figuratively just like the top reply but what's the difference haha
@@ishachoudhury7719 I feel sad for you.
"I did not use my emergency pair"
Quote of the day right there
It is so brilliant that you make such amazing quality videos and are willing to give them out for no cost at all. Thank you
THIS is the perfect backpack! YES! So smart. How do you find these inventive pieces?
EDIT: 250 dollars? Ouch...
Likely got it sent to him for free
@@777arc2 he's pretty well off, coulda bought it
Yeah, I was really excited but dang that’s a lot
@abel it's linked in the pinned comment ;) Everyday Backpack by Peak Design
Quality video Matt! I use travel cubes for packing, and also I bring my trusty travel coffee mug to minimise usage of plastic/paper cups.
Matt should do, "30 videos of pinning random comments"
I use the Away Carry-On and a medium sized back-pack as well. Backpack is for essentials, suitcase is for the trip...I haven't checked a bag in years. Great video!
Perfect timing, I just got my timeframe for going to Israel and Turkey today🙇🏽♂️🙏🏽
They Love Kahan enjoy Palestine!x
Palestine*
I really love the comedy you add into your videos while still creating super meaningful content
"Allergy pills" yeah sure Matt, allergy pills, keep telling you that
This helped a lot. I’m traveling to Nashville and I normally dont do a lot of traveling requiring a plane ride or luggage so it for sure helped!
My name is Matt and the most important thing I'm packing are THESE GUNS BABY 💪💪
Packing is definitely a mini exercise in minimalism, I’ve moved and lived in a different city/country four times already, and with each time I had to pack all my belongings into two suitcases and one carry on + backpack. I’m moving again by the end of this year so I’m going to get to challenge my hoarding tendencies again 😅
Marie Kondo has nothing on you Matt 👌🤣💪
Marie Kondo is highly overrated. The way she packs and organizes stuff is how my mom told me how to pack and fold clothes when I was just a little shit, almost 50 years ago. In Germany we'd call the Kondo way of organizing just "logical" or "rational" or "generally good housekeeping". Nothing to it.
Great video Matt! You've taught that happiness is nos achieved by leading a superficial life. People always say it, but you put it into reality, by living a meaningful life.
I am abt to go on a trip this is so helpful
This video, in fact, provides decent and compact knowledge, acquired by dozens of travels and pain.
Had to learn it the hard way though.
Kudos mate.

When someone tells me you're ugly
This is the most satisfying video I have ever seen.
"2018... salmonella..." would love to hear that story.
Minimalism bags that you uploaded were coveted. It's too hard to get it in Korea..😇
The incase EO travel backpack has been an important part of my short trips, especially how tough regulations with airlines has gotten lately. Only pack what you need if needed buy something on holidays and donate when back. Works for me for a couple of years now and really enjoy travelling light. And the extra pair is a must
Looking around, “did I forget anything?”
Realizes doesn’t have almost anything.
"how does your gf packs her luggage."
Let me guess: Open bag - put shit in bag - close bag - off to airport - et voila. =^.^=
This saved me when I went to a wedding and the flight company lost my family's luggage I was the only person who showed up to the wedding in a formal outfit!😂
what do you mean posted 30 seconds ago
Two bags: one roller with all my clothes and toiletries and shoes and whatnot (I very very rarely travel for less than a week at a time) and then the Tenba 15 DNA Camera bag as my walk around bag. Fantastic camera bag, incredible quality, really really love it.
"I don't know where I'm going" lol
The North Face Base Camp Duffel is my best friend for travel. They got sizes from 20 litres up to 150 litres. I use the Medium size which is 70 litres, and it is one of the best buys I have ever made. I can fit everything in it easily no matter how long the trip is, if it is shorter, I can always throw in an extra pair of shoes or a sleeping bag if that is the case. Also, it is waterproof and extremely durable.
Where do you get your shirts at
I too would like to know...
Seeing all the pockets and compartments of that backpack is sooo satisfying hahaha
Shoes and a coat two of the most irritating/bulky must haves you missed 🤷♂️
I didn't bring a coat & I wore my shoes.
Matt D'Avella Matt D'Avella 😂wearing sweats would lead me to believe you only took trainers....you must have very versatile trainers? If my memory serves me correctly it was snowing at your family’s home which would suggest only a mad man would take just one hoodie!!?? Forgive my freakish observations, I really did enjoy this video 👍
How about him only taking a pair of boots as I didn't see him showing what kind of shoes he would pack/wear
I would use that
Wow! I think Matt is just reading my mind. I’m traveling in a few weeks to NY and I was starting doing some research about packing today. Thanks, Matt!
