  • If the given numbers have different exponent of 10, re-write the number with the larger exponent to get the same exponent. Once the exponents are the same, add or subtract the coefficients. If the sum or difference has a zero before the decimal point or has more than one digit before the decimal point, re-write the number to get a single non-zero digit before the decimal point.

    I'm really sorry, it's been a while since I checked for comments. Since scientific notation requires only a single digit before the decimal point, 99.78 has to be written as 9.98 (round off the last digit) by moving the decimal point one place to the left and adding 1 to the exponent of 10.
