Ford Bronco Raptor Problems - Experiencing Issues on the Trail!

  • We take our Ford Bronco Raptor to a relatively easy trail known as Hackett Gulch in Colorado for a chill day of off roading...or so we thought! This is a trail we've taken both our Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser on, as well as our Jeep Wrangler JLUR. With perfect weather and almost no obstacles, we definitely weren't expecting to continue experiencing problems with our Bronco...as it continues to put itself into limp mode, among other things.

Where I would look first (but I'm not Chris by a long shot) is for a ground point that's loose or broken, particularly on the underside or a connector that's loose or a connector pin that is loose anywhere. The fact that the wrench seems to come on when going downhill plus the turn-off-on (aka "Power on Reset") tends to mean that something is just loose enough that an infinitesimal change in any force causes it to separate - and those error conditions may be a sense once, and it's set, rather than an ongoing condition like an inop fan. The PoR causes the electricity to jump the spark gap just enough to reset it. Good luck!

Ran Longwater and Hackett to the water years ago and there Awesome !!
Without the water there not all that.
To bad they can't let Off-Roaders use that area like they should be able to. There are several lawsuits pending to open it back up. I hope and pray they win !!

in case they havent figured it out yet, that popping noise on the jeep is most likely the chain slipping in the transfer case. had that identical sound in a rig before and it got gradually worse until the chain broke and split the transfer case in half.

Take it to a dealer, they can pull the error codes that are in memory to get a clue as to what the problem is. You can also add an OBD II reader to your "kit". You should be able to get the codes that way as it's happening. As they say, such is life with computer everything. Keep up the great videos!

Years ago my stock JKU rubicon had issues where the rear locker wouldn’t disengage. I took it to the dealer for a warranty repair and was told by the dealer that Jeep wouldn’t warranty it because it looks as if I took it off-road. I told them I definitely took it off-road but I’d like Jeep to put that as the reason why they were denying my warranty claim. They told me to call Jeep. Come to find out that was just a dealer claim or some misunderstanding. Regardless Jeep ended up fixing the issue, provided me a rental, threw in 3 years of oil changes and tire rotations. All this to say, electrical problems exist. They are the worst. Hopefully Ford will find out what’s causing your issues and do you guys right. For over 100K that beast should be treating you much better. Awesome video as always.

And perhaps Chris can configure that body/bumper in such a fashion as to not have the body of the Raptor come in contact with that new front bumper with integrated winch? Hope. Hope.

Hackett and Longwater are some of my old local 4-wheeling trails. I remember spending several weekends 20+ years ago going in with a 4-wheeling group and doing lots of trail maintenance (both manual and with my own tractor with a loader and rear blade) on Hackett and Longwater. We actually did a LOT of work on Hackett down to the river from where it is now closed to vehicular traffic. Same thing on Longwater. 'Course, the whole Hayman fire from a few years back torching the entire area didn't help matters either.

We took our BRaptor up Engineer Pass and had some strange glitch as well. Coming off a small ledge I bumped the bottom skid somewhere near the midline of the Bronco and bells went off telling me the cross traffic avoidance system had faulted. It cleared itself but in addition while aired down it only showed one wheel to be low even though all of them were set to the same pressure. Covered 3400 miles in a week and was impressed with how comfortable it is but the glitches are somewhat annoying and worrisome. Awesome video.

The same thing happened on my BRaptor during Bronco Safari. While going downhill in 4L the wrench light came on and it went into limp mode. Turned it of, restarted and everything was back to normal (for a little while. ) Did this several times always while going downhill. The common scenario I found was it was doing the service wrench/limp mode while I was in 4-Low and using manual shifting (downshifting from 2nd to 1st). One time, when it was happening, I took it out of manual shifting, put it into 4-low automatic and it worked just fine. Put it back into 4-low manual and while going downhill the wrench light came back on.
When I got back home had my local dealer look at it, but they couldn't find any modules showing codes. One item they did ask about was my fuel level as a low fuel pressure was noted. I would fill up each morning before hitting the trails so I don't think that was it. 😮

If you open the FordPass app on your phone and select "Account" (top right corner) then "Message Center" you will see an entry for each occurrence of this. Mine shows "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power" and the date/time for each incident. I'm pretty sure that the dealer could pull out these codes from the truck even far after the event and tell you what triggered the wrench/limp. I've got a service call coming up and will be asking the dealer to check this and tell me what's going on. I'll report back here once I find out and maybe save some folks some time. An OBD-II scanner would tell you the faults that have tripped in the past. Like what Scotty Kilmer uses. Not even that expensive. :)

I’m not a jeep or Ford fan yet cause overland or rock crawling is something I aspire to do. However did the 1st model of the jeep have issues? I think most newly developed vehicles designed to rock crawl would have issues. It’ll hopefully improve as engineers learn what works and what sacrifice for margin was not worth it.

Hey guys, I've been watching your channel now for over a year. Love the insights and suggestions. I'm reaching out for the 1st time as my truck has gone into Limp Mode as well. My cause at the moment is an exhaust heat exchange sensor. I'm somewhat documenting my issues on my channel to hopefully make people aware of this issue. Please reach out and let me know what you guys find out about your issue and if it's the same thing or not. Good luck.

Its the 74weld rack and however they coded it...its not stock with a $5k experimental steering rack.

    • @LiteBrite
      @LiteBrite  Рік тому +2

The billet rack is not the issue. 😊 For starters, this issue only ever happens in 4L (has never occurred in 4H or 2H). Doesn’t happen on the highway, Baja, high speed off road. Second, the electronic internals are all still the same, factory internals. Third, there’s nothing experimental about the 74weld rack. It’s just a stronger housing (again, it still uses all of the factory internals). Fourth, there are zero issues with the steering of the Braptor (both in general, and when these faults & limp mode occurs). 🙃 Gotta understand mechanics better before trying to randomly point fingers at inaccurate diagnoses.

I came down hard on the stock steel bumper on our JLU Rubicon, to the point the tailgate was hard to open. All it took to fix it was a couple of whacks with a big hammer. Now you can’t even tell it happened. If you gave me one of those Broncos for free, I would just sell it to pay for a Jeep.

  • @psychology2217

I hate how the newer vehicles won’t hold onto fault codes. The code happens stays on for either a few minutes or until you shut off the vehicle, then you go to scan the vehicle and it’s like nothing happened. Super frustrating, I had it happen to my new Chevy ZR2 several times. I sold it and am extremely happy with my 16 year old 5.9 Cummins

@@vtec350 Wrench light and check engine light are different symptoms, The wrench light has to do with throttle control not emissions. There are cases where a wrench light will not set a DTC in the PCM but could set DTC's in other modules, Which in a lot of cases you may need the Ford IDS software to see those DTC's. But we must remember, The DTC's do NOT tell us what is wrong, It just gets us in a direction. We have a way to pull up when the DTCs are set on Ford connected vehicles (with Ford Pass all set up)
